Preparations and Operation Flow
In order to use the cameras communication and Internet functions, you need to make a number of settings.
Operation Flow Chart
The following four communication and Internet functions can be used on this camera. The setting operation flow differs depending on the function. Refer to the flow chart on the following page and follow the sequence for setting the desired function. QUICK SEND E-MAIL FTP UPLOAD : This function is for sending a single image by simple operation using e-mail. : This function is for sending and receiving mail. You can also attach an image to a message. : This function is for uploading (sending) an HTML file in which an image has been placed, and posts its original images to a server where Web pages are saved. : This function is for forwarding (sending) files directly to a computer.
DIRECT UPLOAD
Be sure to configure the communication settings when using the communication and Internet functions for the first time. However, provided that you do not change the settings, configuration is not required each time you use the communication function.
Note There is no need to set the dial-up account if the camera is on a LAN
(internal office or home network) when using the Internet function. Details of how to connect the camera to a LAN, refer to Connecting the Camera to a Network in the Connecting to a Personal Computer operation manual.

Have You Made a Contract With a Provider?
To use the Internet function (Quick Send, E-mail, FTP Upload), you must have a contract with a provider. If you do not already have one, make the contract first before making the communication settings.
To use Internet e-mail, you will need a mail account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that uses SMTP, POP protocols with DNS. Some ISPs such as America Online may not fully support the requirements and cannot be used with the RDC-i500.
Note A contract with a provider is not required in the following cases:
* If the company already has an Internet environment. * If you are only using the communication function to send images directly to a computer (Direct Upload).
Preparing Information before Setting
The following information is required from the provider or system administrator before you can make the settings. The explanations in this section use an imaginary provider, testnet, in the examples. Depending on the provider, the terms used may vary and certain information may not be supplied. Further details are given later. P.24 ~ q Dial-Up Information This information is required for accessing the Internet. Telephone number : (Refer to the access point list) PPP account : (Ex. testname) : (Ex. 1234ABCD) PPP password Primary name server : (Ex. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) xxx = numerals from 0 to 255 Secondary name server : (Ex. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) xxx = numerals from 0 to 255 q Mail Information This information is required for using e-mail. This section explains how to connect the camera to communication card.
Connecting the Camera to an Ordinary Telephone Line
This section explains how to connect the camera to an ordinary telephone line.
To be able to connect the camera to an ordinary telephone line, you need to purchase a CF type communication card from a computer dealer. For details of our recommended communication cards, refer to the separate list of Compatible Products. For the latest information, see the Ricoh Web site (http://www.ricoh.co.jp/r_dc). Do not touch the cable terminal of the communication card. For details of the communication card, refer to the instruction manual supplied with the communication card.
Modular jack
s Requirements
CF card for connecting the camera to an ordinary telephone line (modem card) Connection cable
Use of the communication card of CF card type occupies the card slot. Images recorded on the CF card cannot therefore be uploaded. In this case, record or copy the images onto the internal memory.
s Connecting Operation
Make sure that the camera is turned off before inserting the communication card in the camera. If the power is left on, it may result in failure of the communication card or malfunction of the camera.
A Remove the telephone connection cable (modular cable) from the modular jack on the wall.
Note If the connection jack for the telephone
is not a modular jack, it will need to be converted to a modular jack. Contact your telephone company for further details.
Modular cable
B Check that the camera is turned off. C Insert the communication card into the CF card slot in the camera.
Make sure that the communication card is face up and insert it firmly into the slot.
D Insert the connection cable into the communication card.
Note For details of connecting the
connection cable to the communication card, refer to the instruction manual supplied with the communication card.
E Insert the modular cable into the connector.
F Insert the end of the modular cable into the modular jack.
Insert the connector fully into the jack until it clicks into position.
G Check the modem settings.
P.60 Checking the Modem Settings Connecting operation is now completed.
Note When you have finished communicating, disconnect the camera
connection cable and the modular cable from the modular jack and replace the telephone connection cable to the modular jack.
Removing the Communication Card
When you have finished communicating, remove the communication card from the camera.
Make sure that the camera is turned off before removing the communication card from the camera. If the power is left on, it may result in failure of the card or malfunction of the camera.
A Check that the camera power is turned off. B Remove the connection cable from the communication card.
Note For details of how to remove the
cable, refer also to the instruction manual supplied with the communication card.
C Push the EJECT lever.
The EJECT lever will pop out.
D Push the EJECT lever straight.
The communication card will be pushed out a little way.
E Remove the communication card by pulling it straight out.
Note Push the EJECT lever to return it to
its original position.
Do not remove the communication card from the camera during communication as this may result in failure of the card.
Checking the Modem Settings
Normally, when you have connected the camera to the communication equipment, you can use the communication and Internet functions straightaway as the various items have already been set on the most commonly used settings at the time of shipping from the factory. However, depending on the type of communication card used, communication may not proceed smoothly with the settings as they are. You should therefore check the modem settings when inserting the communication card for the first time.
Provided that you do not change the type of communication card used, there is no need to check the settings each time you use the communication function.
s Modem Settings
Check the following 3 items. If the communication and Internet functions do not operate smoothly, change the settings to suit the type of communication card used. q Card Type The type of communication card inserted (manufacturer and type) is displayed. This field will be blank if a communication card is not inserted in position.
Note If a communication card of a type not recommended by Ricoh is used,
it will not work. Be sure to use a card of the type recommended by Ricoh. The separate list of Compatible Products q Tone Confirmation When using the dial-up function, you need to set whether or not to wait for the dialing tone. Select either [AFTER TONE] or [WITHOUT TONE]. The factory default setting is [WITHOUT TONE]. If you are using an ordinary telephone line (analog line), select [AFTER TONE], and if you are using an ISDN or mobile phone, select [WITHOUT TONE]. AFTER TONE: waits for the dial tone before dialing WITHOUT TONE: does not wait for the dial tone before dialing

Capture Images
Enjoy top resolution and f lexibility.
3.34-megapixel, 3X optical zoom performance
The 3.34-megapixel CCD delivers photo-quality resolution of up to 2048 x 1536 pixels. The 3x optical zoom lens is equivalent to 35105mm on a 35mm film camera. This gives you the flexibility you need in almost any shooting situation. And because it is optical, the zoom maintains sharp resolution across its range.
Text, motion, and voice memo modes
Ricohs document technology lets you crisply capture text in black and white. WAV-format voice memos and an AVI movie capturing capability add realism and impact. You can annotate stills with sound or use the Voice Memo feature to record thoughts on the run.
Share information fast.
E-mail stills, movies, texts, and voice memos. You can simplify e-mailing by setting up your dial-up account, address book, and preset memos on your PC. Quick Send makes light work of sending files to your company while on the road or E-mail operations to other addresses you commonly transmit to. This feature lets you send a still to a preregistered address just by pressing a few buttons. You can also input addresses and messages directly on the RDC-i500. You may send your high-resolution images, or to facilitate faster transfer, have the camera automatically create a lower resolution copy that is better suited for e-mail and photo sharing.
Network
The JOB Navi. HTML file creation function lets you select multiple images and post them directly to your website. Customizable templates control the links with selected files and thumbnail creation automatically. FTP uploading is perfect for updating websites quickly and directly, wherever you are.
