S P D-S How Do I Assign a Sound to a Pad?
You can assign different sounds, or waves, to each of the pads. In this example, well start with Factory Patch 012:Bongo. Press the PATCH button so its lit. Press the + or - buttons to select 012:Bongo. Press EDIT so its lit. Press ENTER. Strike Pad 7098>Bongo Hi appears in the display. Use + or - to select the desired wave for this pad. (IS THIS WAVE A WERE SELECTING? WHAT ABOUT WAVE B?
Tip: You can scroll through sounds in increments of 10 by holding SHIFT and pressing + or -. If youd like to, strike another pad and repeat Step 6. Press EXIT twice to save your new settings as a patch.
Note: If you select the wave you want in Step 6 and the pad still plays the original sound, the patch youve started with uses two wavesWave A and Wave Bfor the pad. See the Owners Manual to learn how to change Wave Bs sound in this kind of patch.

What Kind of Compact Flash Cards Can I Use?
S P D-S How Do I Sample?
On the SPD-S, you can record, or sample, CD-quality samples and play them back instantly from the pads. Heres how to sample: 5 Using the appropriate cables, connect the audio device to be sampled to the INPUT(s) on the back of the SPD-S. Press PATCH so its lit. Press SAMPLE so its litselect dest pad appears in the display. Strike the pad from which youd like to play the sample_ Stby is displayed. Play the audio to be sampled and set the SPD-Ss input level so the onscreen meter reaches the maximum value only occasionally. Adjust the input level as necessary using the INPUT LEVEL knob on the back of the SPD-S. Stop audio playback once youve set the input level. Press the START/STOP button once_Wait appears in the display. Play the sound you want to sample. Sampling starts automatically as _ REC is displayed. When the audios been sampled, press START/STOP again. Now processing appears in the display momentarily, followed by write?[Wave].
10 Press ENTER to store the new sample. 11 Strike the pad you selected in Step 3 to play back your new sample.

S P D-S What Do I Need to Know Before Importing.WAV Files?
Heres a checklist of things to know and do that can help ensure the successful importing of.WAV or AIFF files into the SPD-S. Before you attempt to transfer.WAV or AIFF files onto your Compact Flash (CF) card, make sure the card has been formatted in the SPD-S. Note: The SPD-S supports CF (type 1) cards up to 512MB. When you want to copy a.WAV or AIFF audio file onto the CF card, place the file at the rootthe uppermost levelof the card. The simplest way to place a file in the root directory of a CF card is to drag the WAV/AIFF file onto the CF card icon. Note for PC usersTo find the CF card icon on your computer, first put the card in the card reader. Click Start, and then click My Computer. Youll see the icon labeled ROLAND SPDS within the window. Note for MAC usersTo find the CF card icon on your computer, first put the card in your card reader. Wait a few seconds until the ROLAND SPDS icon appears on your desktop.

The phrase maker allows you to temporarily record a pad performance. 7 Press PATCH so its lit, and then select a patch youd like to play. Press and hold the PHRASE MAKER button so its lit. Use the + or - buttons to select the desired tempo. Press START/STOP. Play the pads. When youve finished your performance, press START/STOP. Press START/STOP again to hear your recorded phrase.
Now that a phrase has been created, you can save it permanently as a new wave. This process is referred to as resampling. Use the following procedure to resample the phrase you just recorded: 5 Press RESAMPLE. Press PAGE 4 to display resample, sure? Press ENTERnow processing. appears momentarily in the display, followed by write? Press ENTER. Press START/STOP to hear your newly sampled wave.

Play the audio to be sampled and set the SPD-Ss input level so it reaches the maximum value only occasionally in the onscreen meter. Adjust the input level using the INPUT LEVEL knob on the back of the SPD-S. 6. Stop the audio playback once youve set the input level. 7. Press START/STOP 4/ n once._Wait appears in the display. 8. Auditioning Patches
Use the following steps to try out some of the patches in the SPD-S. 1. Press PATCH so its lit. 2. Press + or to select a patch. 3. Play the pads to hear the selected patch. 4. Press + or to select Patch 001:Join Us! 5. Play Pad 9 hard and then softly to switch between open and closed hi-hat sounds. 6. Hit Pad 4 lightly to start playing a loop. Hit the pad harder to play a different loop. 7. Hit Pad 4 lightly again to stop the first loop and then hard to stop the second loop. Tip: You can scroll through sounds in increments of 10 by holding SHIFT and pressing + or -.
Pad Assignment

Sampling Pad Auditioning Effects
The SPD-S contains 28 multi-effects, any one of which can be used for a patch. Use the following steps to audition the effects within a patch. Well use factory patch 009:Eco-Echo. 1. Press PATCH so its lit. 2. Use + or to select patch 008:Eco-Echo. 3. If its not already lit, press EFFECTS to light it. 4. Press EDIT so its lit. 5. Press PAGE 4 three times to select EFFECTS. 6. Press ENTER. 7. Use + or to select the desired effect. 8. Strike the pads to hear their sounds with the newly selected effect. 9. Press EXIT twice to save your new effect selection into the patch. Note: You may also return to the original effect by pressing + or to select STEREODELAY, followed by EXIT twice.
Adjusting Sensitivity
You can adjust the sensitivity of the pads on the SPD-S. 1. Press SETUP so its lit. 2. Press PAGE 4to select PAD. 3. Press ENTER. 4. Strike the pad you want to adjust. Note: You can set the sensitivity for Pads 1-3 as a group or Pads 4-9 as a group. 5. Press the + or - buttons to select the desired sensitivity value (1-16).
Note: A value of 1 is the least sensitive. A value of 16 is the most sensitive. 6. Press EXIT twice when youre finished.
