Playing the Songs
There are 50 preset songs in the TD-9s built-in sequencer. Use the following steps to select and play them: 3 Press SONG so its lit. Turn the VALUE dial to select one of the songs. Press 4/ g.
Congratulations on your purchase of the Roland TD-9. This Turbo Start contains step-bystep instructions that will quickly introduce you to a few of the TD-9s major features. Note: This Turbo Start discusses the use of the TD-9 as part of the Roland TD-9S and TD-9SX kits.
Selecting and Auditioning Drum Kits
There are 50 drums kits in the TD-9, ready to go. Use the following steps to select and try out at few. Press KIT so its lit. Turn the VALUE dial or press the + or - buttons to select Compact 18 Kick. Play the pads and cymbals. Now turn the VALUE dial counterclockwise or press the - button to select Double BASS. In this kit, the hi-hat pedal triggers a kick instrument for a double bass setup.
Tip: Press the MUTE button to mute the drum part in the song. 6 To change the tempo, press and hold SHIFT, and then press CLICK/TEMPO. Turn the VALUE dial to select the desired tempo. When youre finished, press 4/ g.
Quick Record and Quick Play
This feature allows you to record your own drum performance while playing on the pads. Use the following steps to use Quick Record and Quick Play: 5 Press KIT so its lit. Press + or to select a desired kit. Press QUICK REC and then play the pads to the metronome. When youre finished, press QUICK PLAY. Your recorded drum performance will begin to play automatically. To stop the recording press QUICK PLAY again.
Selecting Instruments in a Kit
You can customize the instrument tuning, muffling, and cymbal size in any of the TD-9s kits. Start by choosing your own instruments for a kit, selecting different instruments for each of the pads within the kit. Heres how: 7 Press KIT so its lit. Turn the VALUE dial to select the kit youd like to edit. Press F1 (INST). Hit the snare pad. Turn the VALUE dial or press the + or - buttons to select the desired instrument. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for any remaining pads. When youre finished, press KITyour new settings are stored automatically.
Scope is a feature that lets you to see the notes of your performance while playing along with a metronome. The TD-9 shows if youre ahead or behind the beat, and makes for a great exercise in timing. Use the following steps to use Scope: 5 Press the KIT button so its lit. Press SCOPEthe metronome begins to play. Hold SHIFT and press CLICK(TEMPO). Press + or to adjust the tempo. Press SCOPE.

While watching the display, play the pads along with the metronome. If your timing is accurate, the dots appear evenly, either on or within the grid lines.
Tip: Press F3 to see a more detailed view. Press F2 to expand the view. 7 When youre finished, press SCOPE again.

Starting Over

If youd like to redo the TD-9s settings from scratch, you can use the following procedure to clear the TD-9s internal memory and reload its factory settings. Caution: When you perform the following steps, all of your settings are lost. Be sure to back up any information you wish to keep before reloading the TD-9s factory settings. 5 Press SETUP so its lit. Press F3 (UTIL). Press F3 (RESET). Press F3 (EXEC). Press F3 (OK).

To set up the TD-9 for the way you like to play, set the sensitivity for each of its pads. Use the following steps to adjust the sensitivity for a TD-9 pad: 7 Press the SETUP button. Press F1 (TRIG). Press F2 (BASIC). Strike the pad you want to set up. Press the + or - button to increase or reduce the pads sensitivity. Lower values require harder strikes to achieve full volume, while higher values allow you to reach full volume with softer strikes. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the other pads. Press the KIT button when youre finished.
