"Romeo" gouache, signed and dated 1952 lower right. Titled lower left. 32 x 27cm, $250 - $300 Specialised in theatre painting. NGV School 1920's. Well known in the 30's for his decor and costume designs for the Borovansky ballets. Lived in London and Australia. Represented in NGV, AGNSW and MOMA, NY. COUNIHAN, Noel (1913-86) Aborigines in a camp Ink and wash; signed and dated '63 lower right. 28 x 36cm $1,200 - $1,800 CZERMANSKI, Zdzislaw (Polish/American. 1896-1970) A very rare and complete set of 13 limited edition prints after drawings by this important Polish artist. In their original folio (49x34cm), entitled "Josef Pilsudski". Published in Warsaw in 1935. They depict the great Polish General Josef Pilsudski in various poses from 1914 to 1935. $500 - $1,000 Czermanski was born in Cracow, spent some time in France and Brazil before settling in the USA in 1943. He was, of course, driven out of Europe by the Nazis. He was a much loved caricaturist both in Poland and the USA. The emigre was well-received by artists and celebrities in the USA. The Ransom Collection at the University of Texas at Austin has a substantial collection, including caricatures of Frank Lloyd Wright, Gertrude Stein, Sibelius, Marc Chagall, Evelyn Waugh, Joyce and Dylan Thomas.
CZERMANSKI, Zdzislaw (Polish/American. 1896-1970). A very rare and important folio of coloured etchings: Eight of the original thirteen are present in their glassine wrappings in the paper folio (53x42cm), two others were framed but are now included loose and three others are framed. (13 in total) $2,000 - $3,000 Published in Paris in 1938 by Librarie France-Polonaise, they are an evocative reminder of independent Poland, which was of course about to be invaded and dismembered. Three pages of text list the title of each etching with some commentary. Sizes vary very slightly around 38x28cm. All signed in plate. Subjects include General Pilsudski as a knight in armour with the Russian bear as a rug at his feet, General Pilsudski emerging from a picture frame (see photo), General Pilsudski as an elderly gent rugged up in a chair, receiving a bemedalled and tiny general. Mixed condition, but mainly fine.

GREGORY, George Frederick (Australian/British, 1815-1885). "His paintings of Port Phillip Bay have historic interest, to which is often added a fine sense of composition and atmosphere achieved without compromise of accuracy." (S. JOHNSTONE, Henry James (Australian/British, 1835-1907). River Through the Bush Oil on board. Monogrammed and dated 1897 lower left. 35.5x45.5cm. $6,000 - $8,000 One of Australia's finest nineteenth century painters, Johnstone specialised in bush and river scenes. He was one of Melbourne's leading photographers in the 1860's, and his paintings reflect this in their precision. He left Australia in the 1880's and spent the rest of his life in England. This painting dates from 1897, when the artist was living in Wadhurst, Sussex. Johnstone continued painting Australian scenes long after he had left Australia, as his Australian customers remained loyal to him. The scene depicted is probably in Gippsland.

NAMATJIRA, Albert (1902-1959) "In the Macdonnell Ranges Near Standley Chasm" Watercolour, signed lower right. Painted c.1941/42. 27 x 38cm. $12,000 - $15,000 An important early work of Namatjira's that has been in the Stokes family collection since 1942/3. It was gifted to Lt. Col. H.E. Stokes by the well known Territorian, Bill Harney for services to the Aboriginal and local community. Stokes was CO of the Advanced Workshop unit of the 2nd AIF stationed at Mataranka, N.T., in 1942/43. Bill Harney was the Liaison Officer from the many indigenous people working for the Army. The picture has been exhibited once, between 1956 and 1961, at the National Gallery of Victoria. The NGV provided the current frame.

A long-term prisoner at Pentridge, he gifted it to a Koori visitor in 1970. Thence by descent to his daughter. The central figure is almost certainly taken from a movie poster for the film "Jedda"; the stylised animals relate to aboriginal art of the period which is reflected in Australian stamps of the 1950's. Each cover is a fine lithograph by Horrocks and Co, of Ashton-under-Lyne. Dog portraits predominate, in landscapes or interiors; also notable sportsmen. Condition generally fine.
