| Wonderful cans that have a laid back but detailed sound. Music just flows right through and is delightful to listen to. These do the trick for quiet TV watching. The design traps heat around the ears; I need to give them a break after a full-length movie. | |

Day Two Keynotes
9:30 a.m. March 23
Yang Jie, executive director for China Telecom SanjivAhuja, chairman and CEO of LightSquared Hans Vestberg, president and CEO of Ericsson Patrick Soon-Shiong, M.D., chairman and CEO at the Institute for Advanced Health
himself carries around four or five devices, including tablets and eReaders, and while he may be atypical in that sense, he does see a day when more consumers certainly will be carrying more than one device if they arent already. Vestberg has his hands full steering Ericsson through a highly competitive industry; his challenge is to continue growing the business faster than the market. We need to be on our toes every second, he says, and that doesnt seem to be a problem for Vestberg.

4G Americas: HSPA+ Momentum Extraordinary
BY MAISIE RAMSAY TE may be hogging the limelight, but theres still a lot of action to be had with HSPA+. The industry saw it with T-Mobile USAs upgrade of its mobile broadband network boldly marketed as 4G and the industry will continue to see it from other carriers in North America and South America as well. So says Chris Pearson, president of 4G Americas. From what Pearson is seeing at 4G Americas, carriers are not in an either-or scenario when they consider upgrading to HSPA+ or rolling out LTE. Instead, theyre opting to do both. I think the momentum for
plan to roll out dual-carHSPA+ even in the past six rier HSPA+, effectively months has been extraordidoubling the speed of nary, Pearson says, speaktheir current network. 4G ing during an interview Americas estimates that at CTIA Wireless. That dual-carrier HSPA+ netmomentum isnt just the works currently comprise commercialization; its the nearly one-sixth of all curmomentum in standards. Pearson rent HSPA+ deployments. This technology has a future At the same time, LTE beyond 2011, 2012, 2013, is on a similar growth track. 4G 2014 HSPA+ has a great future. Americas says there are currently 19 4G Americas reports that there commercial LTE networks around are already 128 HSPA+ deploythe world, as well as 79 trial netments worldwide and expects the works, 173 networks in the process majority of all HSPA operators to of being builtand 52 commitments eventually upgrade to HSPA+. to deploy LTE. Many operators that have Pearson says many of 4G already upgraded their network Americas members are pursuing a to HSPA+, such as T-Mobile,
dual HSPA+/LTE strategy, which allows them to leverage their existing investment while cashing in on LTE. AT&T and T-Mobile are pursuing just such a strategy with their proposed merger, which will combine T-Mobiles considerable HSPA+ resources with AT&Ts spectrum assets and planned LTE network. Pearson is carrying his message about HSPA+ to CTIA Wireless, where he will moderate a panel on the 3GPP family of network technologies at the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) network summit. The panel runs from 1:40 to 2:25 p.m. today.
Alliance Certification Shoots for Wi-Fi Roaming
BY MAISIE RAMSAY nternational roaming, while expensive, is pretty seamless. If youre an AT&T customer traveling in France, your phone will connect Orange, Bouygues Telecom or SFR, and voila! Youre online. That level of seamless connectivity isnt quite there when it comes to Wi-Fi. If you try to connect to a locked Wi-Fi hot spot not covered by your carrier, chances are youll be directed to a tiny form on an equally infinitesimal web page, where youll struggle to type in your credit card information before finally finally getting connected to Wi-Fi. Its not exactly flawless. The Wi-Fi Alliance is tackling this problem with a new certification program aimed at making Wi-Fi connectivity more like current roaming agreements for cellular connectivity. Instead of going through the irksome process of connecting to a Wi-Fi network through an online form a tedious and exasperating task on a smartphones tiny screen users would be connected
automatically to Wi-Fi networks certified by the program. This program takes the methods for doing provisioning, authentication and network selection and defines a common methodology so that credentials can be recognized across providers, says Kelly DavisFelner, marketing director of the Wi-Fi Alliance. Mobile providers figured out how to do that so their customers could roam. Were essentially bringing that to Wi-Fi. The alliances hot spot program is still in its infancy and wont be open for business until the first half of next year. Davis-Felner says members of the Wi-Fi Alliance are currently working to decide on what requirements should be in place for provisioning, authentication and network selection. From there, the group will develop specifications that will form the basis for its certification program. The Wi-Fi Alliance says the devices certified by the program will use subscriber preferences, operator policies and network optimization
rights protection using HDCP; and the use of the most popular existing digital connections. The creators of the spec also kept in mind the user-friendliness angle as in, no configuration necessary. HDTV automatically recognizes whether it is connected to an HDMI cable or an MHL cable and will switch accordingly, and the mobile device automatically recognizes whether it is connected to a USB cable or MHL cable/ adapter and switches accordingly. For mobile network operators, MHL is a very easy sell because it enables new services for them to offer, Wong says. Once LTE gets more widely deployed, its also easy to see how file transfers will speed up, but Wong says the consortium is technology agnostic if consumers want to use Wi-Fi in their home and LTE elsewhere, itll work. Besides the five founding members, the consortium has attracted more than 20 licensees, ranging from Acer to HTC and others in between.
Reliable, Steady Wins Race with OTT Players
Who: Pardeep Kohli,
CEO of Mavenir Systems
Whats new and what are you hoping to accomplish at CTIA this week?
Mobile cloud services. First, let me say that contrary to all the hype, cloud based service delivery is not a new concept. Rather, what is new is the fact that there is a race going on between mobile operators and over-the-top players about offering communication services to the mobile user with the acceleration of LTE deployments. Cloud use today evolves around commerce; communications, entertainment and information, and LTE operators need to see how important it is to develop their own mobile cloud to offer voice, video and
multimedia services to stay relevant in the new ecosystem. The mobile cloud also exposes services APIs to allow them to capture the next set of innovations from the open developer commuKohli nity across device platforms. So, instead of the traditional race between mobile operators in terms of differentiating their services from each other, the race is really against over-the-top players. LTE operators can use their mobile cloud to compete with a branded communication service (e.g. voice and SMS over LTE, video calling, converged IP messaging) and collaborate with web communities to offer compelling value. We hope to spread the importance of that message to mobile operators at CTIA this week.
Whats the biggest challenge facing your segment of the industry these days? Attitude. The
race between the mobile operators and over the top players is quite similar to the legendary race of the tortoise and the hare. Everyone wants something thats new, shiny and attractive, much like the hare in the story (example Skype). Mobile operators are more like the tortoise reliable and steady. Everyone knows the technology exists, but it is the realization of the mobile cloud services approach that will help them make an enormous impact in the next generation of mobile communications. vironment is changing rapidly and the winner must prepare for what obstacles lay ahead. Mobile operators powered with a mobile cloud can provide new ways of delivering voice (voice notes replacing voice mail, one touch group calling, voice to text messaging), multi-device messaging (across a smartphone, tablet, PC and TV), social messaging, location sharing, mobile video calling and conferencing that truly leverage LTE speeds. They might have started off slow, but having the flexibility and reliability to utilize voice, video and messaging enablers as part of their cloud and evolve them with advancements in technology will help mobile operators, like the tortoise, win the race in the end.

Video Optimization Helps Operators Manage Traffic
Who: Marc Zionts, CEO, Ortiva Wireless Whats new? Everyone is recognizing the
monstrous growth in mobile data traffic and understanding that video optimization is one of the technologies that will be utilized to help address the challenges of cost effectively managing this traffic while providing the best quality of experience possible to the end users. content closer to the edge and call themselves an optimizer too. Ortiva believes that the real time processing of video to match up the current network condition with the content requirements and then continually making adjustments to save bandwidth and deliver excellent quality, all in real time, is what delivers the greatest value to the carrier and this is a profoundly different approach. So our greatest challenge is still helping carriers cut through the clutter and clarify how Ortivas very unique approaches provide them with the great value in their networks.
What are you hoping to accomplish at CTIA this week? Ortiva will be meeting
with numerous carriers and larger OEMs as we discuss our deployments and solutions to help operators address the unstoppable growth in video traffic. OEMs are starting to think about how video optimization, GGSNs, load balancing, policy control and enforcement all interrelate and will eventually be integrated in more end-to-end solutions for the carriers.

1984 1984:
Operators begin to experiment with the Telecom Industry Associations (TIA) digital TDMA standard as part of an effort to increase the capacity of their networks. The digital networks are cheaper to deploy, have better signal quality and are more secure than their analog predecessors. The rst commercial TDMA networks go live in 1993.
1994: AT&T completes its merger with McCaw
Cellular Communications, which was then the largest provider of cellular service in the United States. The combined companies are renamed AT&T Wireless.
July 1994:
The FCC conducts its rst auction, selling off a total of 11 nationwide narrowband PCS licenses for $617 million with six winning bidders in a 47-round bidding process. The agency goes on to auction 30 regional narrowband PCS licenses - six licenses in ve regions - in a 105-round auction that lasted from October to November and raised $396 million. The narrowband PCS spectrum, used for advanced paging services, gave the FCC a chance to test its new auction process before auctioning off its broadband PCS spectrum, which the wireless industry used to deploy cellular services.

Bell Atlantic launches its CDMA network, which later becomes part of Verizon Wireless network. Other big moves in the wireless industry include the founding of MetroPCS, which is established as General Wireless by Roger Linquist and Malcolm Lorang, both former executives from PageMart Wireless. The company is renamed MetroPCS in 1998 to reect its mission to provide affordable wireless services to urban customers traditionally underserved by existing wireless providers.
The FCC concludes its rst broadband PCS auction after 112 rounds of bidding, allowing a ood of new companies to enter the wireless market. Winners paid $7.7 billion for 99 licenses in the PCS A Block and B Block. The FCC sold off two 30 MHz licenses in each of 51 major trading areas. One license in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. were sold as a Pioneers Preference to companies that wanted to use the spectrum for new technologies. Big winners included AT&T Wireless and two large alliances: WirelessCo, a limited partnership between Sprint, TCI, Comcast and Cox, and PCS PrimeCo. The FCC proceeds to auction off 493 C Block broadband PCS licenses in regional markets to small businesses, raising $10 billion. The agency later had to re-auction 18 C Block PCS licensees after winners defaulted on their bids.
(now Vodafone Group) partner on a joint venture that combines the two companies wireless assets in the United States: Bell Atlantic Mobile, Air Touch Cellular, Prime Co Personal Communications and AirTouch Paging. The deal received regulatory approval in six months and the new Verizon brand launched in April 2000. Three months later, Bell Atlantics merger with GTE closed after two years of reviews by government regulators to form Verizon. After the Bell-GTE merger closed, Verizon becomes the majority shareholder of its Verizon Wireless joint venture with Vodafone. The addition of GTEs wireless assets makes Verizon Wireless the largest operator in the United States.
Cingular launches the rst commercial EDGE network in Indianapolis, Ind. The company later vows to deploy its EDGE network across most of its footprint by the end of 2004. The new EDGE technology improves data transmission rates.
Clearwire is founded Craig McCaw, a major player in the wireless industry whose McCaw Cellular became AT&T Wireless and who was a key investor in Nextel. The company began offering xed WiMAX services in August 2004 and manages to cover 40 markets in 13 states over the next three years. October 2003 also marked a pivotal moment for Verizon Wireless when it launched its EV-DO service in Washington, D.C.

Some carriers have tentatively embraced OTT players as a driver for their Mobile Internet package offerings, however they could actually benet further from the pioneering work of Internet services. By moving away from the bit-pipe-syndrome operators can introduce new revenue-generating products to fulll the customers desire for richer communication services. Ubiquity of service access and interconnectivity are key ingredients for a truly mass-market service. Otherwise all different IP communications will remain niche. The GSMAs Rich Communication Suite (RCS) initiative is specically designed to achieve this, by providing end-users with enhanced services and functionality, and at the same time make it easier for the industry to adapt and deploy expanded capabilities. In an exciting development for RCS, ve of the leading European operators, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefonica and Vodafone (the
G5 group), launched their common approach to RCS: RCS-e (e for enhanced). The vision for RCS-e is to allow subscribers to create their own personal community in which each member can interact with each other using their existing global user ID (i.e. their cell phone number). Subscribers will be able to use a wide range of media types (text, images, video) to function across multiple devices, independent access methods and network types. The key objective of the initiative is to deliver an enhanced communications experience which is even more relevant and personal to the individual subscriber. The core features of RCS-e are: Service capability discovery: provides the user with a clear view of a contacts status, indicating which RCS e services are available, to choose the preferred communications option. For example, a customer would see if their contact is in an area with 3G coverage and is able to receive video. Enhanced voice: provides the ability for subscribers to share video or images while on an active call, improving the traditional calling experience and allowing the participants to share real-time video experiences with one another. Enhanced messaging: evolves the messaging experience to increase social sharing and business collaboration. Examples include peer-to-peer and group messaging; threaded cross-platform conversational views; multi-media le transfers; and multi device communications, enabling the access of services from a range of devices. RCS-e also provides carriers with new monetization models, as traditional billing and charging models evolve to encompass many of the attributes found in other areas of the Web 2.0 world. Both the consumer and the messaging industry itself are evolving at a blistering pace. The RCS-e initiative provides the opportunity to address both areas and push the future of messaging to the next level. Its about capitalizing on the unique strengths of both the carrier, leveraging their brand and network to offer a compelling service, and the subscriber, bringing the power of their social community relationships. RCS-e makes it possible to change the communications landscape for good and puts operators rmly in the driving seat for future broadband communications. www.acision.com

The operators pay a per-megabyte charge to Verizon as part of the deal. Verizon offers operators participating in the program access to nationwide roaming on its LTE network. Rural operators Cross Wireless, Pioneer Cellular, Bluegrass Cellular, Cellcom and Thumb Cellular have signed up for the program. To date, Verizons agreements with rural operators through the program cover 1.7 million people across 50,000 square miles.

SkyCross Releases New Technology for 4G Embedded Antenna Solutions in MIMO Devices
SkyCross, a global developer and manufacturer of advanced antenna and RF solutions, announced the commercial availability of its StateTuned Isolated Mode Antenna Technology (ST-iMAT) for embedded antenna solutions in 4G MIMO devices. The new technology can conserve space inside 4G devices, providing device designers with more flexibility and enhancing device performance. The SkyCross patented, state-tuned antennas are an evolutionary extension to the companys iMAT technology, which permits a single radiating element to behave like multiple antennas. State tuning enables the MIMO performance of an iMAT single radiating element to be applied across multiple frequency bands while simultaneously increasing radiated efficiency without increasing the overall size of the antenna relative to conventional approaches.

The challenge for many is trying to adapt an existing business model to the new medium of mobile. The mobile channel offers an entirely new communications and interaction experience. Mobile lets brands connect in real time, directto-the-pocket, with engaged users. So the opportunity is also a challenge because developers are only just now starting to see the vast potential offered by new business models specific to mobile. Subscriptions are one great example. Our media clients developing magazine apps for the iPad want to offer subscriptions to readers. Its core to their business model. But doing so is a huge headache; publishers dont understand Apples terms of service, building the platform is extremely difficult and so on and so on. They were hung up on the 30 percent cut that Apple wanted to take for connecting the magazines to users. But in reality, the mobile channel is going to provide publishers with richer, more significant data about their readers than they could ever get through print, or the Web. And this applies across industries different features, different business models, different modes of engaging, but in many ways better.

BlackBerry, Android Platforms Most-Tested by Developers
BY ANDREW BERG ore developers are targeting BlackBerry and Android mobile platforms, while Symbian is on the decline, according to metrics released Tuesday by DeviceAnywhere at CTIA Wireless 2011. The report is based on over 350,000 combined hours of testing by more than 15,000 mobile application developers and QA testers. Research In Motion (RIM) maintains the pole position as most tested on manufacturer and operating system despite an overall decline of 13.6 percent over the past 12 months, according to the report. RIM continues to have the highest total share of smartphone testing time (45 percent), which is almost twice as much as Android, which holds the No. 2 spot.
RIM devices were among the most tested on all monitored networks, including AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile USA. As a result, RIM has 11 models in the top 20 most popular devices by manufacturer compared to four handsets for Apple, three for HTC and two for Motorola. As for Android, which also saw a slight decline in testing time share in the last quarter of 2010, Google saw a 1.7 percent rise in usage in January 2011, achieving the largest percentage increase (19.4 percent) in testing over the past 12 months. Overall, testing on HTC devices has steadily grown in popularity throughout the year, moving up from sixth to fourth position, while Motorola has maintained its leading place as the second most tested device manufacturer in the past 12 months.
Android OS devices are the most tested smartphone OS devices on the Verizon and T-Mobile networks, second most tested on Sprint, and third most tested on AT&T. Thats in part due to the popularity of the HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid and HTC Nexus One handsets, which were among the 20 most tested devices in January 2011. Symbian testing over the past 12 months fell from 4.9 percent in January 2010 to 3.1 percent in the beginning of 2011. Overall, smartphones are the most-tested devices on DeviceAnywheres network. Smartphone usage saw a 16.4 percent share increase over the past year, reaching 65.7 percent in January 2011. Moreover, all of the 20 most-used handsets in that same month were smartphones, with Apple iPhone 3G being the most tested device followed by the BlackBerry 8330 (Curve) and Apple iPhone. Faraz Syed, CEO of
DeviceAnywhere, concludes that the adoption of tablet devices and other connected deviceswill continue to drive growth in devices. With increasing pressure amongst handset and operating system companies to attract developers, 2011 looks to be another year of transformation for the mobile ecosystem, he said in a statement. DeviceAnywhere provides end-to-end solutions that help organizations successfully bring their applications and services to the mobile platform. The company also announced on Tuesday the creating of a Virtual Developer Lab (VDL) for Qualcomms Brew platform. AT&T recently announced that it will use Brew for all of its mid-range texting phones going forward. Through DeviceAnywhere Test Center, developers worldwide will have access to more than 125 live Brew and Brew Mobile Platform (Brew MP) devices for testing purposes.
