Questionnaire and Worksheet is given to vendors before the porting begins to help vendors
determine the most appropriate set-top box model for the MHP standard and any potential challenges with the porting process. This step shortens the API mapping phase because it identifies set-top box capabilities and challenges before the porting process begins.

Porting Services Package

Alticast offers unparalleled knowledge in the development and porting of MHP middleware for digital set-top boxes. It is one of the first companies to develop MHP middleware, AltiCaptor, and the first middleware provider to pass MHP 1.0.2 conformance tests on multiple set-top boxes from leading manufacturers. To extend this expertise to the industry, Alticast offers a Porting Services Package designed to expedite the middleware integration process and minimize the costs required to develop an MHP set-top box. Alticast provides the manufacturer with the with the instructions and integration support needed to create demonstrable MHP applications in just weeks.
Portability Test Suite evaluates the Portability glue code created by the vendor to help isolate
obvious defects within the glue code. It also invokes each of the Portability APIs with acceptable parameters and checks that the response is appropriate.
Portability Layer provides a set of APIs from AltiCaptor that were abstracted for the set-top box
RTOS and hardware. Those who implement the Portability Layer glue code will map the Portability Layer APIs directly to the appropriate set-top box operating system functions and hardware resources. Portability Layer APIs encompass expected categories, including threading, graphics, device control, MPEG section filtering, file I/O, memory management, and networking (TCP/IP). Alticast can provide a sample Portability Layer glue code for most RTOS/MPEG chipset combinations upon request.

The Porting Process:

For a Standard Port, the manufacturer receives all of the documentation, including the Questionnaire and Worksheet, glue code, Portability Test Suite, and engineering support necessary to build the Portability Layer. Alticast completes the Standard Port by integrating the middleware and any Optional Services within the Portability Layer (provided by the manufacturer) to the set-top box. An added feature to the porting services, manufacturers can take advantage of Alticasts conformance testing experience and request Alticast to complete the necessary tests before submitting results to ETSI for review.
Standard Port provides the functionalities that enable the set-top box to receive DVB-MHP applications from a DSM-CC carousel, and run the applications in a basic free-to-air deployment.
Optional Services, such as conditional access and return path integration, can be performed in
addition to, or subsequent to, the Standard Port. EPG and PVR integration services are examples of Optional Services.
