Repair or refund?
Would you please act as an arbitrator in a dispute between me and the dealer who seven months ago sold me a new TV projector which has now gone on the blink? I want to claim all my money back, but he will only offer me a free-of-charge repair. Surely these things should not fail in such a short time? I will accept whatever you say in regard to this.
Problems getting this Hitachi to come out of standby are usually to do with a minor fault in the AVC/tuner module
Plasma woes
I have a Hitachi plasma screen, 42PD3200, which has served well for some years now, but the last few weeks it has been difcult to make it come out of standby mode: the red light goes out, but theres no picture or sound. Continual thrashing of the zapper key used to get the set up and running. Now no amount of that has any effect. Have you come across this fault?
AF Bailey, Newton Abbot
Charlie Dowling, Crewe
Its reasonable to expect a cash refund if failure occurs in the rst month after purchase. Thereafter you should accept a repair so long as its carried out reasonably quickly and completely cures the problem. If needed, you can get further advice from the Trading Standards/ Consumer Direct ofces.

Theres no inherent problem with digital terrestrial TV transmissions, but there are many practical and physical reasons why glitches occur. The commercial channels (ITV, Four etc) are more vulnerable to trouble because they use the relatively fragile 64-QAM modulation system. The most common cause of the hassle you describe are random bursts of interference, for instance from fridge, water-heater or heatingsystem thermostats, nearby electrical machinery and vehicle ignition systems. Clearly, theres no question of equipment faults here if the pictures from both receiver boxes are getting snagged up.

Pesky pixellation
My own experience with Freeview reception suggests that even under perfect conditions there can be glitches. I have two digiboxes connected to a 32element Galaxy aerial. Although the signals from Crystal Palace register at full strength here, the digital images (especially ITV and Four) are prone to spasmodic pixellation. I doubt that this is a transmitter issue. Can you throw any light on this?
Derek Webb, via email Other high power devices in a caravan can affect the performance of a TV
The root cause of this not uncommon fault is not normally with the display assembly at all, but in the AVC/tuner module. This has its own power supply section, the heart of which is a regulator/control IC, type STR-F6668B, and thats the usual culprit. Youll need an appointed technician to replace it and to nd contact details for one in your area ring 01628 643000.
Lightning Reactions
A few days ago there was a violent thunderstorm here and when it passed overhead a strong bolt took out my dish system, even burning the wire coming down the wall. I had to have a new dish, LNB and receiver. How can I prevent that happening again please?
JK Wilson, via email
A direct strike on a TV aerial or satellite dish can be very destructive. The cable
funnels the discharge down to the equipment in the living room, violently destroying the delicate little electronic bits and pieces there. The best defence is a stout conductor from the exposed metalwork of the dish or aerial straight down the wall and into the ground. Commercial installations use a heavy copper strap, ground stake and buried plate. Talk to your aerial contractor.

Irate about ratios
I have just discovered that almost every 19in widescreen TV on the market is giving a distorted picture. I just bought the LG 19LS4D for my bedroom: the actual picture is very good, but I noticed that it was slightly laterally squashed particularly noticeable on circles, but peoples faces also look a bit thin. The quoted resolution is 1,440 x 900 pixels, which is 16:10, not the 16:9 youd expect for TV pictures. Obviously, theyve just used a screen intended for a computer monitor, and not bothered to adjust the TV aspect ratio. I checked with LG and was told there is no adjustment to alter this. Almost all other makes of 19in widescreen TVs have the same 16:10 aspect ratio. Larger sizes are usually okay. Sony TVs are correct but they start at 20in, which is too big for me. I am fairly abbergasted to nd that supposedly respectable TV manufacturers are palming off distorted pictures in these sets.
Roger Wilmut, via email
Yes. All these things are powered from the car battery, sometimes supplemented by an auxiliary one. If the supply voltage drops below a certain level, generally about 11V, electronic (audio and video) equipment cuts out. High power devices such as your water pump or bright lights can load down the 12V supply to this level if theres excessive resistance in the common supply line. This can arise from a bad contact in a plug/socket link or from the use of a power cable which is too thin. At 12V you need 20 times the current to do the same job as with 230V mains supplies. Just one 10th of an Ohm in series resistance will drop one volt with a load of 120W.
SD y in the ointment
I have a 24in professional hi-def PC monitor made by Hyundai, model number N240WD. It works ne with the PC, but I wonder if theres any way I can use it with my DVD player and Sky box, neither of which are high denition?

Whats the buzz?
I save all my copies of What Video & Hi-Def TV and, looking back through them, theres never been any mention of JVC atscreen problems, so I hope you can help with mine. Its an LT42 type, and its fault (present since new) is minor, but irritating nevertheless. Any setting of the brightness control below the maximum level causes a buzz from both speakers, which is most intrusive during quiet sound passages.
Nick A, via email
This excellent widescreen monitor with 1,920 x 1,200 pixels cannot display standard-denition TV pictures directly. Its input ports can handle VGA Hi-D (15-way socket), component, DVI-D and HDMI signals, but its not kitted up for the standard TV scanning rates of 50Hz and 15.625kHz. You could use an RGB to VGA convertor, available from CPC on 08701 202530, but its three-gure cost may not be justied by the results.
Simple parts failure
Our Toshiba SD-43HK home cinema system has stopped working. It started to shut down soon after we switched it on, showing the caption protection. At the suggestion of a Currys salesman Ive checked the loudspeakers, but the fault continues even with them disconnected. Can you help?
Brian Whiteld, via email
Toshiba home-cinema and audio equipment does seem to suffer with faulty capacitors! In this case the usual suspects are electrolytics C27 (100F 16V) and C31, 470F 25V. Their replacement is a simple job which can be done by any repair shop. Hand in a copy of this reply with the unit for repair. Paul Richards
The annoying buzz on this JVC TV can be xed easily by an engineer
Where the actual screen shape differs from the standard 16:9 TV aspect ratio, the picture will be slightly distorted in displaying a widescreen image. Even so, the distortion is less than is present on widescreen TVs showing a wide or panoramic display of a 4:3 or 14:9 image. Large atscreen models offer various picture-zoom modes to give viewers a choice of compromises. Although your LG may not, most LCD screens have picture height and width settings in their factory/service menus, and with judicious tweaking the squash distortion can be traded off against scan amplitude, though it needs a technician to access and reset these parameters. This is not covered by guarantee. Even where the actual screen dimensions correspond exactly to 16:9, many people are puzzled when the pixel count does not conform to this width/height ratio, for instance in the extreme case of plasma panels with 1,024 x 1,024 matrix. Here the pixels are made rectangular rather than square.
Jim Findlay
The backlight in your LCD model is regulated by a device called a PWM, Pulse Width Modulator. Working at any level below atout the hash it generates can , break through into the audio circuits, with the effect you describe. Even though you need a

More aspect ratio rage
Thank you for the HDMI cable which I won for a previous letter to Forum. It performs very well, but why do Blu-ray discs claim to resolve 1,080 lines when the lms are in fact only 75 per cent of the screen height? This, by my reckoning, equates to 830 lines.
Chris Corey, via email
We get lots of queries regarding aspect ratios, letterboxing and the like, and the thing which seems to annoy people most is the display of a widescreen (eg 2.35:1) lm on a 16:9 (equals 1.78:1) screen. To be free of side-cutting and geometric distortion it must be letterboxed, with a loss of about a quarter of screen real-estate. Its a pity that all the 1,080 lines of an HD system could not be concentrated on the visible picture, but its not possible for compatibility reasons.
Be prepared for the letterboxing effect on wide aspect ratio Blu-ray discs
Sky bound
Even though my existing internet service provider is satisfactory, Im tempted by Skys broadband offer at no additional charge or just 5 a month on top of my existing TV subscription. This is about a third of what I currently pay. Is there a catch?
Scott Turner, via email
The TV is at present set to Auto in its factory menu thats inaccessible to users. You will need a technician to go into the factory/service settings and reset this aspect to manual. Staying on the subject of Samsung LCD TVs, another query comes from Tom Styles from Plymouth. His 40in screen suffers from sparkly borders around onscreen logos and text. The problem is due to a faulty video processing chip (SVP type) on the main PC board and is yet another job for a qualied technician.
have to be at the masthead? Will it still be needed after switchover?
Tim Lavender, via email
Getting in shape
My Sony KV-32FX60U TV has a Smart setting, in which it automatically adjusts the image shape to match the transmitted picture. Now and again, on certain programmes, the picture jumps between zoom and wide modes by itself, depending on the cameras angle and shot. On other programmes the set is ne and remains locked on Smart. I dont understand why this keeps on randomly happening.
Brian Knight, Nottingham
Sky broadband works well for most people, even though theres some criticism of it in the various forums on the net. Ive found it to work okay with programs such as Outlook Express and Windows Mail so long as its carefully set up. The broadband offer is conditional on keeping your Sky TV subscription, and binds you to its service in the face of competition from Freeview, the cable companies and now Freesat. I believe Sky is seriously worried about the latter; events have proved that many viewers are seeking an alternative TV platform.
In areas of very weak terrestrial TV reception the signal is so fragile that the losses in the downlead become signicant. They can be overcome by boosting in a low-noise amplier at the aerial itself, which is energised by a small mains-operated power supply behind the TV. At digital switchover the Freeview signals strength will be raised at the transmitters and this may render the outside amplier redundant. Masthead ampliers are best avoided if possible because they are vulnerable to TETRA interference from police communications transmitters, for example, and to damage by lightning.
Lost Teletext
My Samsung TV (LE32R86WD) has a problem with the reception of analogue TV channels, which I need because sometimes the Freeview ones drop out. When the analogue channels disappear I can only get them back by switching the screen off and on again at the wall socket. Why?
Colin Boorman, via email
In this mode two factors govern the picture shape: the transmitted WSS (wide screen switching) ag conveyed in the teletext data; and the black levels at screen top and bottom as sampled live by the TVs detector circuit. Its likely that the latter function is causing your trouble. You can turn off this autoformatting by going into the features menu and de-selecting it.
Life before the mast
A local specialist has solved my Freeview reception problems with a masthead amplier, and though it cost a pretty penny, I can now get all the programs reliably. Why does this thing
A masthead amplier can be used to give weak Freeview reception a helping hand
