Great design; very good black level performance; plenty of features; really vibrant colours. Definitely recommend www.thefreescene. Excellent value TV which more than delivers on picture quality. Cheap price and excellent value for money. This TV offers the highest quality and is the most feature packed for the best value from a top name. It also looks superb.

This review is for a LE32R87BDX. Picture is brilliant, sound not so brilliant. I bought this on 10.02.08. I find it unnecessarily complicated.

This TV is very elegant and sophisticated. Unlike most it has a curved bottom edge which makes it a less harsh than a straight rectangular TV.

ON TEST / 32IN LCD TV

Sharp LC32X20E

A full HD 32in set with three HDMIs and plenty more besides

SHARPS AQUOS RANGE has been making the headlines for the past 12 months. Its bigscreens have been selling for bargain prices and, despite not being the pinnacle of picture quality, theyve been consistently great value TVs. That reputation continues with the LC32X20E, which can be found for as little as 730 or so online. While that may not seem like a rock-bottom price for a 32in LCD TV, theres a good reason why its almost unbelievable. For this Sharp, along with Panasonic TX-32LZD85s (reviewed on page 28) and the slightly cheaper TX-32LZD80 that we saw last month, is one of only a handful of sets of this size that qualies for full HD status. Its massive resolution enables it to display every single dot in a 1080p picture. And this, of course, is great news for those of us desperate for a reasonably sized set to use with an ever-increasing range of full HD hardware including games consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Blu-ray players and personal computers.

squeeze 1,920 x 1,080 pixels into a 32in display, another reason for the lack of mid-sized full HD tellies is that the genuine, visible benet of that kind of resolving power is debatable on anything smaller than 42in. And, of course, youll need something capable of outputting 1080p in order to feel like you are getting your moneys worth from all those extra pixels. Fortunately, Sharp has been making top-drawer liquid crystal sets for as long as most people can remember, and theres plenty to recommend this set for anyone merely after a decent 32in TV. As well as that future-proof panel specication, the LC32X20E boasts a whopping contrast ratio of

Picture

On paper this is the ultimate gaming TV, so we put it to work with both a Xbox 360 and a Blu-ray player. A hi-def Jools Holland session on BBC HD, via a Virgin V+ box, reveals a pleasing lack of noise in backgrounds, coupled with a level of detail that suggests theres no need for 1080p the interlaced image is plenty. Get closer to the screen and there is a slight sheen visible when the camera pans around the studio and during close-ups. It proves the key difference between p and i, because if you switch to the sublimely detailed Earth on Blu-ray disc at 1080p, you can sit much closer without the picture breaking up. Peak whites are pure /// during the well-known sequence of polar bears emerging from their hibernation, while the colours from the Xbox 360s Pro Evolution Soccer look rich and well saturated. Pictures from the sets Freeview tuner look both well saturated and clean and the digital noise reduction circuits prove their worth. The lack of 100Hz processing isnt a major issue at this size. The picture enjoys smooth edges and suffers from only marginal blur during vertical and horizontal camera pans. There is a minor issue with black levels, but Earths coverage of a dawn-lit ocean isnt hugely affected and while the LC32X20Es pictures do lack depth, so do many competitor 32in LCD televisions. Sound quality is class-leading at this price. Precise and offering a virtual surround mode that effectively widens and lls-out the soundstage, there is plenty of bass. The sets Clear Voice mode is a letdown though, being both narrower and far too trebley. Its best avoided.

On the minus side, the LC32X20E lacks double-scan 100Hz processing a feature that helps smooth out fast-moving sequences on LCD TVs, but given this sets other credentials, we doubt this will be a deal breaker.

Ease of use

Activate the eco setting and the sets OPC mode immediately kicks in. The intelligent piece of technology constantly adjusts the brightness of the TV to suit the onscreen image and the amount of ambient light in the room, thereby saving electricity. The downside is that it constantly lets you know what its doing by ashing small green leaves on the screen, which can become irritating. The remote is relatively small and well designed, with a small ap hiding a set of controls that can be used to control any other Sharp kit linked to the 32X20E via HDMI. The sets logical onscreen menus are a lesson in simplicity and the TV automatically switches to whatever input if you hover over it for a second or more. While the advantages of placing a full HD panel in a screen smaller than 42in are debatable, theres no doubting the versatility of the LC32X20E. Whether or not its worth investing such a large amount of money, however, is another matter entirely Z

Precautions When Displaying a Still Image
A still image may cause permanent damage to the TV screen. WARNINGS:
Image retention, commonly known as screen burn-in, can occur on most types of television if the same image is displayed continuously. The most common causes of image retention are logos that remain stationary on the TV screen. These logos are common on many programmes received via a Setop Box. To reduce this risk, avoid displaying still images for long durations and lower the brightness or contrast settings to decrease the intensity of the picture. Extended viewing of movies and programs in aspect ratios that are different from the aspect ratio of the TV may cause image retention. Always endeavour to avoid black borders top or bottom by using the zoom function. This will help eliminate the black borders and fit the picture to the entire area of the screen. Using a video game console may cause image retention and is not recommended. When using a PC input, avoid displaying still images for long durations and reduce the brightness or contrast settings to decrease the intensity of the picture. IMPORTANT: Image retention issues are not covered by your Samsung warranty.
Do not display a still image on the LCD panel for more than 2 hours as it can cause screen image retention. This image retention is also known as "screen burn". To avoid such image retention, reduce the degree of brightness and contrast of the screen when displaying a still image. Watching the LCD TV in 4:3 format for a long period of time may leave traces of borders displayed on the left, right and center of the screen caused by the difference of light emission on the screen. Playing a DVD or a game console may cause a similar effect to the screen. Damages caused by the above effect are not covered by the Warranty. Displaying still images from Video games and PC for longer than a certain period of time may produce partial after-images. To prevent this effect, reduce the brightness and contrast when displaying still images. 2007 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. All rights reserved.

Wiring the Mains Power Supply Plug (UK Only)
IMPORTANT NOTICE The mains lead on this equipment is supplied with a moulded plug incorporating a fuse. The value of the fuse is indicated on the pin face of the plug and, if it requires replacing, a fuse approved to BSI1362 of the same rating must be used. Never use the plug with the fuse cover omitted if the cover is detachable. If a replacement fuse cover is required, it must be of the same colour as the pin face of the plug. Replacement covers are available from your dealer. If the fitted plug is not suitable for the power points in your house or the cable is not long enough to reach a power point, you should obtain a suitable safety approved extension lead or consult your dealer for assistance. However, if there is no alternative but to cut off the plug, remove the fuse and then safely dispose of the plug. Do NOT connect the plug to a mains socket as there is a risk of shock hazard from the bared flexible cord. IMPORTANT The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code: BLUE - NEUTRAL BROWN - LIVE As these colours may not correspond to the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows: The wire coloured BLUE must be connected to the terminal marked with the letter N or coloured BLUE or BLACK.
