Residential Home Cinema Installation Property: 5 Bedroom 1930's Executive Home, Edgbaston, Birmingham
The Brief Through consultation with the client we determined they very keen to have a professionally installed home cinema surround system but had been put off by what they thought this would entail. The main stumbling block was that they didn't want to actually see the speakers or wires. They also wanted a solution where they could pivot the screen so that it was viewable from a number of angles in the living room and not just fixed to the wall. The Solution Innovative Technology Solutions came up with a design encouraging the use of the QAV speaker system with the all in one wall bracket as this system is specifically designed to be used where the customer requires minimal equipment to be on show. This was connected to a Onkyo Surround Sound Audio Visual Processor and a Samsung Series 6 Full High Definition screen. With source equipment the customer already owned including a Sony Playstation, SkyHD box and Apple TV player. Installation The screen was to be mounted in the customers living room on the outside wall with a channel chased into the plaster for all cabling between the Onkyo AV Receiver and Samsung HD Screen. This included a triple run of speaker cable, a 5m QED Professional HDMI cable and Mains Power Cable. With cabling organised to minimise interference. With the channel subsequently re-plastered so the cabling was all hidden.

The QAV front left, right and centre speakers all mount onto the supplied bracket and this is then bolted to main wall bracket which also has the screen bolted to it. Once everything is in position we then connected all the cabling and tested for maximum extension distance to ensure freedom of movement before re-plastering. The rear surround speakers which are of very low profile nature were positioned on the opposite wall from the screen and speaker cable glued into a channel behind a small picture rail ensuring that no cabling was on show and firmly fixed in but able to be removed in the future if the customer so wished.

Calibration Once the equipment had been installed we went through the process of calibrating speaker levels and positioning the subwoofer. For this we use a spectrum analyser to first equalise the levels of all speakers and secondly to access the best positioning of the sub woofer for optimum bass response. Every room has unique acoustic properties so this is a very important task to carry out as the difference in performance can be huge even from moving the sub woofer a few inches. Once we were happy with the positioning we calibrated the LCD screen adjusting the contract and brightness levels and took the customer through how to operate the system including the optimum Dolby Surround Sound settings for each of his audio and video sources.

We wanted to have a home cinema system installed into our living room with no wires showing and baby (and wife!) friendly. The solution Ralph came up with not only looks fantastic but met all our strict criteria which included a tight budget. Ralph worked tirelessly both during the building work and then during the configuration of all the equipment with amazing attention to detail - even using using a sound level meter to optimally configure the levels and positions of all the speakers!
