It has a good set of features but the design ...  mp3 encoding, radio tuner, voice recording, srs wow audio effects bulky, no rechargeable battery.

I bought this mp3 player based on my needs. Small and light, hours of music, great for working out Wish battery life was a bit longer. This is a great product for the money. Very compact and great sound quality.

I bought this several months before my 5th gen iPod (which i love) and believe it or not i still... I bought this several months before my 5th ge...  loaded with features, aluminum construction, great sound limited storage capacity It has a good set of features but the design is bulky and the custom cables are easy to lose.

The IPOD Hype This Samsung yepp player is the real deal so i just had to opine- if you have a pc - the ipod is not for you. bad finish... The sound is great, with the surround sound, but there are two things that really pisses me off.1. I bought this, just opened it.

Safety Instructions
Read and understand all the instructions to avoid injury to yourself and damage to the equipment.
Do not expose to extreme temperatures (above 95F or below 23F). Do not expose to moisture. Do not apply excessive pressure to the device. Do not let any foreign matter spill into the device.

Earphones

Follow Traffic Safety Instructions
q Do not use the earphones while driving an automobile or riding a bicycle. Its not only dangerous, but also against the law. q It may cause an accident if you turn up the volume of the earphones while walking down the street, especially crossing at intersections.

Protect your ears

Do not place heavy objects on top of the device. Do not expose to chemicals such as benzene and thinners. Remove batteries when the device is left unused for a long period of time. q Do not turn up the volume too high. Doctors warn against prolonged exposure to high volume. q Stop using the device or turn the volume down if you have ringing in your ears.

MP3 & WMA Playback

MP3 is an MPEG1 Layer3 audio format. WMA is a Microsoft Windows Media audio format.
Featuring an Encoding Function
You can make a MP3 file out of an source using the ENC jack on the main unit. You can also convert an FM radio program into an MP3 file in real time.

FM Reception

Listening to an FM program is made easy with Auto Search and Frequency Memory functions.

Upgradable

Manual Installation of USB Driver
Go to Downloading/Uploading files on page 20 if the USB driver is in place. Follow these steps if the USB driver is not in place :
Check the device manager.
Windows 98,ME: Control Panel System Device Manager Windows 2000: Control Panel System Hardware Device Manager Windows XP: Control Panel System Hardware Device Manager
After selecting the driver, click on [Update Driver].
Check if there is a device listed with an exclamation point or a question mark (displayed as unknown device or USB device). Double click on the device listed with an exclamation point or a question mark.
Select a compatible driver, click on [Next] to finish.
For Windows 98, refer to page 18.
q If you are using Windows 2000 and your version of Windows does not recognize the USB driver please download and install the latest service pack from windowsupdate.microsoft.com q The installation method may vary depending on the type of PC or operating system. Contact your PC dealer or service center for installation information. q If errors occur continuously when you install the USB driver, reconnect the USB cable after rebooting your system.

After completing the file transmission, you must disconnect the cable in the following way:
Turn on the yepp and connect yepp to PC. Open Windows Explorer on PC. Select the file to save and drag-and-drop it into the removable disk icon. (In numerical, alphabetical order) Notice :
q The WRITING/READING message will appear during file download or upload. Disconnecting the USB cable while WRITING/READING is displayed may cause malfunction of the unit. q Files within a user created folder can only be played in Music Mode. q The order of music files is not relative to the replay order when you select a Removable Disk in Windows Explorer.

Double-click on the green arrow in the taskbar on the bottom right of the window. Disconnect the USB cable.
Select the USB device, and then press the [Stop] button.
The green arrow is not displayed on the Task Bar in Windows 98 system. If READY message is shown in Display window, please disconnect the USB cable.

Connecting yepp to Macintosh
q 20MB of available hard disk space q System Memory 64MB or greater q CD-ROM drive (double speed or greater) q USB(1.1) port supported q Macintosh OS 9.X/10.2.6
Insert the Installation CD into CD-ROM drive. The picture shown below appears. Select [Samsung YP-55 Installer].
After installation is complete, click on the OK button.

q The driver can be recognized by Machintosh without installing an extra program. The appropriate program however must be installed to format and upgrade the firmware. q You cannot install softwares for YP-55 in Macintosh OS 10.0 - 10.2.5.
When you install a program in Macintosh OS X, it may check the user login information.

Connecting yepp to Macintosh with USB cable
Downloading/Uploading files
Plug one end of the USB cable into the USB port on the back of the Macintosh.
Connect the opposite end of the USB cable to the USB cable port on the bottom of the yepp.
q The yepp will automatically turn on. q A untitled or unlabelled portable disc is created. USB connect cable

MODE VOL

Turn on the yepp and connect yepp to Macintosh. A untitled or unlabelled portable disc will appear on the Macintosh screen. Select the file to save and drag-and-drop it into the removable disk icon. Notice :
q The WRITING/READING message will appear during file download or upload. Disconnecting the USB cable while WRITING/READING is displayed may cause malfunction of the unit. q Make sure to empty the trash after deleting a file from the portable disc in order to free up space to download additional files.

Click on Application Program and select [Samsung YP-55 Formatter].
Disconnect the USB cable.
q Disconnecting without deleting the portable disc may cause a malfunction.

Adjusting the Volume

Playing Music
(Power On) When you press the button, the yepp logo appears and a music/voice file is played.

Stopping Music

(Power Off) When you press the button while playing, the music stops. If no buttons are pressed within 10 seconds (changes depending on settings), the yepp automatically powers off. q You can also turn off the power by pressing and holding the button on the main body.

MP3 Encoding
Connect the Audio Output port on the external audio source (or the Line Out port) to the ENC port on the device with the Line cable.
Slide the switch to the REC position while recording to stop the encoding, and a new encoding file will be created.
q Recording will take place in the order of L001, L002, L003. When the recording is finished, the files will be saved as MP3 files.
q Bit Rates can be set within the range of 32Kbps~128Kbps. q To pause during Encoding, press the button. Press the button once again to recommence recording. q Volume can be adjusted from level 0 to 10 while monitoring the Encoding.

Notice : Slide the

switch to the ENC position begin MP3 encoding.
q Do not disconnect the Line cable during Encoding. q If the battery is not charged enough, encoding will not be done. q Adjust the volume of the external audio source to a suitable level and encode it. If the volume level is extremely high, the sound quality may not be good.

Searching for Music/Voice Files
q VBR(Variable Bit Rate) file: MP3 file whose compression rate changes when played. q With VBR files, Turning the lever to the direction within 5 seconds from the start of the track may not result in the previous track playing. q With VBR files, the actual running time may differ from that of the player display. q This player may not play back MPEG1 LAYER1 files.
Searching for Specific Parts in PLAY Mode
q To find a certain track, turn the lever to the up or down during play. q Release the lever and the lever will return to its original position. Playing will recommence in the normal way.
Searching for Music Files in PLAY Mode.
q The next track will play if you turn the lever to the direction during play. q To move to and play the previous track, turn the lever to the direction within 5 seconds of the beginning of play. To move to and play the current track from the beginning, turn the lever to the direction 5 seconds after the beginning of play.
Searching for Music Files in STOP Mode.
Turn the lever to the up or down while the player is stopped. It moves to the track and plays it.

Listening to FM Radio
While the player is stopped, select FM Mode by using the button.
Manual Search for a Frequency
Turn the lever briefly to find the frequency you want.
Automatic Search for a Frequency
Turn and hold the lever to automatically find and tune in to a transmitted frequency.
Searching Stored Frequencies
q Press the WOW button briefly while in FM Mode. q The stored frequencies are successively searched.

Manual Storage of a Frequency
Upon finding a frequency you want, press the button to store the frequency.
Automatic Storage of a Frequency
q Press and hold the WOW button while in FM Mode. q Frequencies within the range of 88MHz to 108MHz are automatically selected and stored. q Frequencies are automatically stored, starting from 1.

MUTE Function

q Press and hold the button while in FM Mode. q As soon as MUTE appears on the display no sound will be heard. q To cancel the MUTE function, adjust the volume with Switch. Note :
q To exit from FM Mode, press the button. q Mono (MO) or Stereo (ST) is automatically selected.

q You can store up to 20 frequencies. q You can replace an existing frequency with a new one but you cannot delete a stored frequency.

q PLAY MODE : To select track repeating mode. q EQUALIZER : To use equalizer function. q FILE : To delete or format music files. q DIRECT PLAY : It plays files encoded in Music, FM or Line. q SETTING : To change the basic setup options of the display. q EXIT : To exit MENU.
q In MENU mode, no input for 15 seconds will cancel the MENU mode. q Menu mode will be released if any button other than the MODE button is pressed.

Troubleshooting

yepp does not work and the LCD displays nothing. q Check the battery capacity q Check to see if the battery is inserted to the right poles ( The buttons do not work. q Check setting of Hold switch. q When the message "Please Reformat" is displayed, please format your YP-55 by installing the software using Windows Explorer. yepp keeps being turned off. q In Stop mode, the power is automatically turned off after ten seconds (changes depending on settings). q Check to see if there are files saved in it. Somethings wrong with play time displayed during Play mode. q VBR SONG message is displayed while VBR (Variable Bit Rate) file is playing.
In PLAY mode, music is not played after pressing the button q Check to see if MP3 or WMA files are saved in the built-in memory. q Check to see if the HOLD switch is locked. q Check if the REC button is on. q Check if the memory is full. Files cannot be downloaded. q Check to see if the driver is installed correctly in the computer. q Check the connection between yepp and computer. q Check and/or replace the battery, turn on the yepp's power. q The Windows98 operating system limits the number of files you can save. Please save your music files by creating a subfolder. Backlight does not work. q Check the backlight setup. q When the battery power is low, the backlight will go out.

Samsung warrants this product as free of defects in material, design and workmanship for the period of twelve(12) months from the original date of purchase.
