SanDisk CruzerLock 2.1 Quick Start Guide
Welcome to SanDisk CruzerLock, version 2.1. security software. The CruzerLock 2.1 product line provides a software security solution that enables you to encrypt sensitive information on your SanDisk Cruzer USB flash drive to protect it. Since the data is encrypted, you can prevent others from accessing confidential data, such as files for corporate projects or personal finances. If you misplace or lose your flash drive, you dont have to worry about your secure data falling into the wrong hands. If you aren't concerned about encrypting the files on your flash drive, instead of using the CruzerLock 2.1 software, you can directly add them to your flash drive much in the same way as you do to other forms of removable storage media, such as floppy disks. For instance, you can drag-and-drop files to the flash drive through Windows Explorer or save a file to the flash drive from software that you're using. This process is described below in Using the Flash Drive without CruzerLock 2.1. The CruzerLock 2.1 software is available in several versions. CruzerLock 2.1 Free and CruzerLock 2.1 Basic are already packaged with the flash drive. To access the CruzerLock 2.1 Basic functionality, you will need to purchase the upgrade. CruzerLock 2.1 is supported on Microsoft Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP Home, and XP Pro. With CruzerLock 2.1 Free and CruzerLock 2.1 Basic, you can encrypt folders and files on the flash drive. You can also decrypt and browse the encrypted contents. The CruzerLock 2.1 Basic upgrade enables you to also encrypt files on your hard drive, share your flash drive archive to your hard drive, and to improve the file compression settings. For additional powerful features, you can upgrade to the Premium and Professional versions of the software from the encryptX Corporation. These features include protecting email and removable storage media (i.e., CD and DVD discs and other removable storage media) content, user rights management, and auditing. For more information about the Premium and Professional products, after you create a new encryption archive or open an existing one, click the Upgrade button in the CruzerLock 2.1 Archive window. You can refer to the Starting CruzerLock 2.1, Accessing an Existing Archive, and Upgrading your Software sections of this guide for instructions on how to create and open an archive as well as how to upgrade. An explanation of the CruzerLock 2.1 software products feature sets is available from the CruzerLock 2.1 online Help system that is included with the application. You can find more detailed information about the features for the Premium and Professional versions of the software on the encryptX Web site. For more detailed information regarding CruzerLock 2.1 Basic and Free version use, please refer to the CruzerLock 2.1 online Help system. User tutorials provide a rapid and easy way to learn about CruzerLock 2.1 functionality. You can access the tutorials by selecting the flash drive letter in Windows Explorer and double-clicking the Tutorials link to open the tutorials Web page.
Using the Flash Drive without CruzerLock 2.1 The CruzerLock 2.1 software included on your Cruzer USB flash drive enables you to encrypt your files, so that only authorized users can access your data on the flash drive. This can be especially helpful if you lose or misplace your flash drive.

However, if you decide you do not need to protect your files, you can also use your flash drive without using the CruzerLock 2.1 software. 1. Insert your flash drive into a PC USB port. 2. If a Windows Explorer window that exclusively displays the flash drive contents opens, close the window. 3. To view the drive-letter that your computer uses for your flash drive, double-click the My Computer desktop shortcut and note the drive-letter associated with it (for instance, "D:", "E:", or "F:"). 4. Through Windows Explorer, drag-and-drop files from your local or network drive to the drive-letter for your flash drive. - orFor an open file on your PC, save the file directly to the flash drive location on your computer. 5. When you have finished putting files and/or folders onto the flash drive, double-click the icon for the flash drive at the bottom right corner of your screen. 6. In the Safely Remove Hardware dialog box, click Stop. 7. In the Stop a hardware device dialog box, select the entry for your flash drive and click OK. 8. In the Safely Remove Hardware dialog box, click Close. 9. Remove your flash drive from the PC USB port.
Starting CruzerLock 2.1 Your flash drive already contains a CruzerLock 2.1 encryption archive (software that enables you to protect and manage sensitive files). When you start the CruzerLock 2.1 Free software for the first time, you set up the archive by encrypting data and entering your login and password recovery information. After you set up the archive, you can freely use it. With CruzerLock 2.1 Free, you can only work with the single archive on the flash drive. If you have upgraded to CruzerLock 2.1 Basic, you can create additional archives on hard and network drives. 1. Insert your Cruzer USB flash drive into a PC USB port. 2. If a Windows Explorer window that exclusively displays the flash drive contents fails to automatically display, in Windows Explorer, select the drive letter for the flash drive 3. Double-click the CruzerLock 2.1.exe file. 4. Review the license agreement in the End user license agreement dialog box. 5. To accept the license agreement, select I accept. (If you do not accept, you cannot use the software.) 6. Click Continue. 7. In the Save CruzerLock 2.1 Archive dialog box, enter a user name and password. 8. In the Verify box, re-enter the password. 9. In the Hint question box, enter or select a challenge question for password recovery if you forget your password. 10. In the Hint answer box, enter an answer to the challenge question that you can easily remember. (The answer must be eight characters or longer.) 11. Click Save. 12. If you are an administrative user of the PC with which you are using the flash drive, in the top panes of the Add Files to Your CruzerLock 2.1 Archive dialog box, select the files and/or folders that you want to encrypt and drag-and-drop them to a bottom pane. or If you are not an administrative user of the PC, select the files and/or folders that you want to encrypt in the Windows Explorer window that displays and drag-and-drop them to a pane in the Add Files to Your CruzerLock 2.1 Archive dialog box.

The Activity Log dialog box that logs the decryption process displays. Its disappearance indicates that a decrypted copy of the file or folder has been saved to the location you selected.
Modifying and Updating Archive Contents You can view or update archive files through the contents viewing dialog box, which presents a flat file view of the archive contents. When you open a file or group of associated files, after you open the file, modify, and save it, CruzerLock 2.1 adds the modified version of the file to the archive and hides the previous version. 1. 2. In the CruzerLock 2.1 Archive window, click the Contents button. In the contents dialog box, select a file that you want to update and click Open. As long as there is an application associated with the file type installed on your PC, the file immediately opens in the application. Update the file, save it, and close the application. The updated version of the file is automatically encrypted and saved to the archive. Click OK.
Deleting Files If you would like more space on your Cruzer USB flash drive and there are archive files that you no longer need, there are a few ways that you can delete archive files, each having different consequences. You can mark files for deletion so they no longer appear in the user interface but are still in the archive, permanently purge files, or permanently empty all files from the archive. A. Mark for deletion When you mark files for deletion, the archive size does not diminish. If you do not have time to permanently remove the files by purging them, you can mark them for deletion first and later purge them. With the Professional version, you can later retrieve these files. 1. 2. 3. 4. In the CruzerLock 2.1 Archive window, click the Contents button. In the contents dialog box, select one or more files that you want to delete. Click Delete. In the Delete Archive Options dialog box, select Hide Selections for Purging Later and click OK. The Activity Log dialog box that logs the file marking for deletion operation displays. Its disappearance indicates that the operation has completed.
B. Purge files To reclaim space, you can permanently purge files from the archive. When you purge files, all files marked for deletion are permanently removed from the archive as well as any previous versions of archive files. The archive size diminishes by the size of the purged files. Even with the Professional version, you will not be able to recover them. 1. In the CruzerLock 2.1 Archive window, on the Operations menu, click Purge. 2. In the Purge Archive dialog box, click Purge Now. The Activity Log dialog box that logs the file purging operation displays. Its disappearance indicates that the operation has completed.
C. Empty archive You can completely empty the archive by permanently deleting all files from it. If you empty the archive, you will not be able to recover the files. To retain copies of the files, decrypt them to another location before emptying the archive. 1. In the CruzerLock 2.1 Archive window, on the Operations menu, click Empty. 2. In the Empty Archive dialog box, click OK.
Accessing an Existing Archive The methods that you can use to access an encrypted archive vary depending on the version of CruzerLock 2.1 that you have. Access the CruzerLock 2.1 Free archive 1. In the window with the flash drive files that displays when you insert the flash drive into your PC, double-click the CruzerLock2. exe file. or If the window with the flash drive files does not display, in Windows Explorer, select the drive letter for your Cruzer USB flash drive and double-click the CruzerLock2.exe file. 2. General Error Messages Following is a list of general error messages that you might encounter when using CruzerLock 2. ENX1000: Cannot read from <filename>. This message indicates that there has been an error in accessing the file information. The file might be corrupt, or you might have ejected the disc from the drive. Check to be sure the disc has not been removed from the drive. ENX1010: Cannot write to <filename>. This error can occur while CruzerLock 2 is attempting to decrypt an archive file. Check to be sure that the destination drive is not full or writeprotected. ENX1020: Cannot find <filename> in the archive. This error can occur if the archive index has become corrupt so that the location of the file in the archive cannot be found. ENX1030: Cannot open archive file <filename>. This error can occur when CruzerLock 2 attempts to open an existing or missing archive file, or, if the archive is located on a file server, when another user is adding files to the archive. The file or archive might be in use. If you suspect that another user is adding files to the encrypted archive, wait before trying to access the archive again. ENX1040: Could not create directory named <path>.
Check to be sure that the specified piece of media or directory path is not full or write-protected, and that you have permission from your operating system to create a directory in the specified location. ENX1050: File <filename> not added to list because. This error can occur if a file or folder that you have selected to add to your encrypted files archive has been deleted. Check to be sure that the file exists. ENX1060: Destination drive doesn't seem to exist This error occurs if your system cannot find the drive for your piece of removable storage media. For example, this might occur if the drive power was turned off or you forcibly ejected the disc, while you were attempting to decrypt a file. ENX1070: Destination directory doesn't seem to exist This error can occur if CruzerLock 2 cannot find the destination directory for the files that you are decrypting. If the destination is a piece of removable storage media, check to make sure that it is properly inserted in the drive. ENX1090: The user name or password is not valid. Please try again. This error occurs if the user name or password is not correct. Both user name and password is case sensitive. Check your capitalization and spelling and re-enter. If you have forgotten the user name and password, contact the archive Administrator. If you are the Administrator, you will have to abandon this archive and create another. ENX1100: Archive extraction aborted by user while processing <filename>.
This message displays when the user selects Cancel in the Activity Log dialog box while performing a decryption operation. CruzerLock 2 displays this message after it completes decryption of the current file. ENX1110: Cannot create <filename>. This error can occur if CruzerLock 2 cannot create the encrypted files archive on a new CruzerLock 2 piece of media, or if it cannot create a decrypted copy of a file in the destination directory while decrypting from a current archive. Check to make sure all affected pieces of media and directories are not full or write-protected. ENX1120: Error writing data to <filename>. This error can occur if the location to which you are decrypting a file runs out of disk space. ENX1130: Error writing data to <filename>. The archive is incomplete. This error indicates that a serious error has occurred while adding a file to the archive. You have added files with another application to the same disk while performing the encryption operation, and the archive location no longer has enough disk space to accommodate the files. If this error occurs, the archive index is corrupt and you cannot add new files to it. You might be able to decrypt the files that are already in the archive to another location. If so, you can then easily recreate the archive. You can create a new archive with the same files on the present piece of media if it is re-writable. To do so, first delete the CruzerLock 2 files from the piece of media to remove the corrupt archive. Then, encrypt those files once again. If the piece of media that you used is not re-writable, insert a new piece of media with CruzerLock 2 before encrypting the files again.
Or, if your archive is on a hard drive, you can delete the archive files and use the same location for a new archive. ENX1160: Skipping directory <pathname>. There was an error opening a directory that you want to encrypt. The contents of the directory, if any, will be skipped, and the remaining files and directories will be encrypted, if possible. Check to be sure that the skipped directory still exists and that you have permission to access it. If so, retry the encryption operation. ENX1170: Cannot open <filename>. File not added. This error can occur if a file in the archive list cannot be opened. Check to make sure that the file still exists and that you have permission to open it. ENX1180: Cannot read <filename>. File not added. This error can occur if a file that you are trying to encrypt is corrupt, or becomes suddenly inaccessible (such as when you forcibly eject removable storage media that contains the file), so that it cannot be read and added to the archive. Check the file to make sure that it has not become corrupt and is still accessible. To do so, open the file in its native application. If the file opens, you can try to re-encrypt it.
ENX1230: Open applies only to a single selected item. Please select exactly one entry and try again. You can only select one file in the CruzerLock 2 Archive on Drive dialog box to view in read-only mode even though more than one file will automatically open in read-only mode if the selected file is associated with others in the same directory or in sub-directories of the main directory. Click OK and select the file that you want to view.
ENX1240: Cleanup operation failed. The file <filename> couldn't be removed. Make sure you have exited the external application before completing the operation. This error occurs if you try to close the Activity Log dialog box before exiting the application associated with the file you have opened. To close this dialog box, first close the application for the file that you have opened by exiting the application. ENX1241: Cleanup operation failed. The directory <directory name> couldn't be removed. Make sure the directory is empty before completing the operation or you can remove the directory yourself at a later time. This error occurs if you try to close the Activity Log dialog box and there is a file left in the temporary folder. Navigate to the temporary folder and examine its contents. Delete files as necessary and then delete the temporary folder.
ENX1260: Cannot read <permission file>. The permission file has an incomplete entry. Another user may be adding data to the archive, or the permission file may be corrupt. There are two possible reasons for this error. It might occur if you try to add or update permissions for an encrypted archive stored on a file server at the same time that another user is performing the same operation for the archive. To add or update permissions, repeat the operation later when no other user is adding or updating archive permissions. This error might also occur if the CruzerLock 2 application is unable to add a complete permission file entry. A permission file entry records permission information, such as the addition of a new user to the archive. An incomplete entry corrupts the permission file for the archive. All
permission file entries prior to the corrupted one are intact but new ones cannot be added. This effectively means that no further permissions can be added or altered for the archive. If you want a fully functional encrypted archive with the same contents, decrypt the contents to your hard drive, create a new archive, and then add the original files to it. ENX1270: <Archivename> does not have a valid extension. This error occurs if the CruzerLock 2 application is unable to open a file other than the <ArchiveName>.ncx file. You may be using the wrong archive file when you try to access the archive through the Windows Explorer methods, or through opening the archive from the Open item on the File menu of the CruzerLock 2 Archive Manager window. Open Windows Explorer, select the folder for your archive, and check if your archive has a <ArchiveName>.ncx file. If it does, try launching CruzerLock 2 again for the archive. If the archive doesn't have this file, it cannot be opened by name. ENX1280: There isn't enough disk space left to hold <filename>. This error occurs if you try to add a file to an encrypted archive on a piece of removable storage media and the media doesn't have enough space for the file. To add the file to the archive, you can copy the archive to your hard drive or file server, before adding the file. You can also create a new archive on another piece of media and add the file to it. ENX1300: You must specify the complete path for the new archive. This error occurs if you are trying to share an encrypted archive stored on a hard drive and have specified a hard drive location for the copied archive that is not valid. Type a valid path for the location, or use the Browse button to select the location.
This error occurs if you are trying to share an encrypted archive through email, but your email program did not send the message with the archive attachment. ENX4130: Unable to create the bundled archive email attachment. This error occurs if your email system could not create an email message that contains an attachment with the shared encrypted archive. Most likely, you don't have enough available space in your temporary directory. Make more space available in the directory, and try again. ENX4140: The capacity key you entered is not valid. Please correct the key text and try again. This error occurs if you entered an incorrect license key phrase. Check the license key phrase that you have received, enter it correctly, and try again. ENX4150: The product key you entered is not valid. Please correct the key text and try again. This error occurs if you entered an incorrect registration key code. Check the registration key code that you have received, enter correctly, and try again. ENX4160: You must add content to this archive before you can share it. This error occurs if you are trying to share an encrypted archive that does not contain any files. Add the files that you want to share to the archive before trying again. ENX4170: The maximum user name length is 255 characters. One of your user names <user name> is too long. Please shorten it and try again.
This error occurs if you are trying to add a user to an encrypted archive and have entered a user name that exceeds the maximum length for user names. Enter a shorter user name and try again. ENX4180: You must select a directory as the document root. This error occurs if you did not select a root folder that contains all of the folders and files for your Web content. Select the root folder that you want and try again. ENX4190: You must specify the name of the desired index file. This error occurs if you are trying to add encrypted Web content to removable storage media, and have not selected a file to function as the index file for your content. Select the name of the file that will function as the index file and try again. ENX4200: Failed to create temporary file (<filename>) for httpd.conf. This error occurs if you are trying to add encrypted Web content to removable storage media, and could not add your content because CruzerLock 2 could not create a temporary file for the configuration file needed for the Apache Web server software. Most likely, you don't have enough available space in your temporary directory. Make more space available in the directory, and try again. ENX4210: Failed to create web configuration file http.conf This error occurs if you could not add encrypted Web content to removable storage media because CruzerLock 2 could not create the configuration file needed for the Apache software to create the Web server on your removable storage media. Most likely, the piece of media that you are using does not contain enough available space for the content that you are adding to it. Create an archive
