This version includes the contest of champion's module, fixed item ghosting issues, and fixed other assorted bugs. Bioware's website: http://www.bioware.com/ -----------------------------------------------------------C. Are you Ready for some Football? By {VGA}d1$1pL3 The second annual Clan VGA NFL.com Fantasy Football League is just getting underway as you read this, and the draft is currently in session. Twelve Assassins will battle it out and attempt to take their fantasy team all the way. Last year, many of us did not know what we were doing; this year we still (probably) do not know what we are doing, but it is fun none- the-less. Last year's winner was {VGA} Crypt9, and he walked away with a free copy of D ablo II. This year's winner will also win a free online-compatible game of his/her choice. Our league can be found on our 'In-Clan Tournaments' section of the site here: http://www.ClanVGA.com -------------------------------------------------------------
D. VGA vs Digital Mafia By {VGA} d1$1pL3 We are in the middle of setting up a clan war with Digital Mafia. There is not much participation from DM's side, but hopefully we can make this a successful event. The first game we will be battling in is Diablo II. For more info see our 'Clan Wars' section of our web site. ------------------------------------------------------------E. Xbox Breaking US Sales Records? By {VGA} d1$1pL3 I bet you are saying to yourself, "Yeah right, then how come all I hear about is how Sony is dominating this console war?" No, really, Microsoft is doing rather well here in the good 'ole U.S. of A. The Xbox is crushing sales records in the U.S., and the NPD Group credits this to a very strong launch line-up and the recent price drop of the Xbox from $299.99 to $199.99. A whopping $100 drop, and The amazing thing is that the console is not even a year old yet! Since the price drop here in the U.S., Xbox sales have skyrocketed by 131%. This is a larger sales increase than both of Microsoft's main competitors (Sony and Nintendo) whom also dropped the prices of their consoles recently. With an extremely high software attach rate, Xbox sales have become the first console sales in history to ever have three million-unit-selling software titles in just the first eight months of being released. The titles are Dead Or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing, and the now-legendary Halo: Combat Evolved. The NPD Group also reported that over ten million software units have been sold for the Xbox console, which is a record for U.S. sales for the same period of time after launch. Currently there are eighty-five titles available for Xbox, but Microsoft plans on having over 200 to choose from by the holiday season. Many will have Xbox Live features, and as I write this, a whopping 300 titles are actually in development. What is the moral of this story? No matter what Microsoft's rivals want you to think, the Xbox is here to stay for a very long time and will not go the route of most Sega consoles.

------------------------------------------------------------F. Xbox Has Its Eyes on Star Wars Fans By {VGA} d1$1pL3 If you are a Star Wars fanatic, you should love the Xbox by now. More Star Wars titles are coming out for Xbox then any other console out now, and I am not talking about corny titles ike Star Wars Racing and Demolition. I am talking about top-notch future classics. A small handful of Star Wars games are already available on Xbox, but none of them are must buy titles. That is about to change with the release of Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and the most anticipated, Star Wars Galaxies. Both JK II and Galaxies will support Xbox Live. Sony is extremely upset that Star Wars Galaxies is coming to the Xbox, because Verant (of EverQuest fame), now known as Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), is developing SW Galaxies for PC. It is also running on a modified EQ engine, and Sony wanted the game to be PC and PlayStation 2 only. Lucas Arts has the final say though (since they own the Star Wars name), and they have decided to bring it to Xbox as well. SOE refuses to develop this version, and they will not allow cross-platform support between the PC and Xbox versions. And for clarification, the PS2 version will not be compatible with the PC version either due to technical shortcomings of the PS2 console and licensing issues. ------------------------------------------------------------G. New Guilds Open We have opened up a slew of new guilds recently, they include a Ghost Recon guild, Rainbow Six guild, Jedi Knight II guild and, WarCraft III guild. ------------------------------------------------------------H. Playing to Win By Sirlin This article (written by gaming guru, Sirlin) will kick-off a series of awesome articles and help improve our gaming. Assassins must always be on our toes; we must be the best. There is no other option. Competitive gaming isn't just a hobby; it's a way of life, a religion if you will. - {VGA} d1$1pL3 Why an article on competitive gaming? One cannot hope to design a hugely successful competitive game if one is ignorant of how such games are played at the highest level. It is that simple. Multiplayer games are played for "fun," sure. Playing for "fun" and playing to win are wildly different pursuits. Edward Lasker begins the second half of his book Chess for Fun & Chess For Blood: "In the preceding pages, we have looked only at the pleasant side of chess; the kind played among amateurs for the excitement of a battle without bloodshed, in which the supreme command is in their hands, but the outcome of which is of no grave consequence to either player. There is another side to chess, however, which is quite different; tournament and match games played by masters or those striving to become masters, whose standing, if not livelihood, may be seriously affected by the outcome.

Such games are no fun, even for the winner. They are the hardest work imaginable. You play for blood! You avoid the lure of beautiful combinations unless you see clearly that they do not endanger your chance to draw the game at least, if you cannot win it. For it is not the beauty of a combination that wins a tournament, but the number of points you make; whole point for a win, a half a point for a draw, and an 'egg' for a loss." Well said. But surely most players of any hit competitive games do not play with the seriousness Lasker alludes to? They do not. And accordingly, the game must be fun at low levels of skill. Players who play for the momentary amusement must have an exciting experience. Every element (the sound effects, music, user interface, mood, theme, feel, everything) must contribute to that experience. But that is not enough. Actually, I suppose it is enough if you are not after making something really great, or if for other reasons beyond the scope of the game design the game is doomed from the start. It is also enough for a game like Ready 2 Rumble, where the game's success had to do with the marketing, characters, and being a launch title for a new system. Its gameplay (which suffered horribly, and worse, needlessly from slippery slope) was almost incidental and did not have to be solid. If those things are enough for you, then just get out of here now. Go on. This article isn't for you. Ok, those of you still here your game will need to attract the hardcore players who play at an insanely high level. They are your opinion leaders. If a game can stand up to the rigors of tournament play (which is orders of magnitude more rigorous than you might believe), then it will be able to hold their attention. As players get better, they will get more, instead of less, into your game. The hardcore players, as opinion leaders, influence a big part of the casual market. Just look at the examples: Street Fighter, Starcraft, and Quake. All three games have some problems at tournament level play, but on the whole, they hold together surprisingly well. They can withstand the harsh extremes of expert players trying to eke out every possible advantage; even after years of play. If these games could not do that, they certainly would not have been the hits they were. There would have been no tournament scenes, interest would have died away, and they would not be perceived as the standards of competition that they are. Many people are qualified to make a game fun for beginners. The real trick is making it still be a game at all once the ridiculously clever top players get a hold of it. That is the trick, as well as the brass ring, for that is what the market rewards via the bandwagon effect.

I think one (of many) reasons there are such few games that succeed on this level is that being a top player, and being articulate and logical enough to explain exactly why you are a top player, are skill sets that generally do not go hand in hand. As a result, there just are not that many people with both the knowledge and ability to design tournament games. All I can say is to jump in the pool and see how it really is, if you have not already. Play to win. Tune in to next months newsletter for Play To Win, Part One. -------------------------------------------------------------B. Halo Multi-player Strategy Guide Part One: UNSC Marine Weapons By {VGA}d1$1pL3 Welcome to the first installment of the Halo Strategy Guide. I will give you my thoughts and strategies so you will at least have a fighting chance when you meet me on Xbox Live (yeah right!). This first installment will cover the UNSC Marine weapons. A weapon is not just a tool, it is an extension of yourself, a part of you while it is in your hands, and the difference between life and death. As an Assassin, you must believe this if want to reach a higher level of killing. Let's get started. M6D Pistol This pistol is recoil-operated and magazine fed. The magazine holds twelve rounds, and you can carry a maximum of ten magazines (120 rounds). You can choose between semi-automatic and automatic fire with this pistol. For automatic use, press and hold the R Trigger button. The gun has a simple site that allows you to zoom in to 2X magnification. If used properly, this gun can kill with a single shot (shot placement is important). The shot must be placed directly on the center of your opponent's head. The M6D pistol is very versatile and can be used in almost every situation. It is a good distance weapon; if an opponent is armed with a Shotgun or rocket launcher and if you keep your distance you can have him dropped in a matter of moments. It is also a decent sniper weapon at a reasonable range. It has a range
of about 120 meters, but you will have to be relatively close for a good clean headshot (no farther than twenty-five meters). Up close it is small, easy to maneuver, and loads fast in the heat of a firefight. As with all weapons, a pistol whip in the back of head is an automatic kill. Excluding headshots, the pistol can kill a healthy opponent at extremely close range with only 4 shots. The farther you are from your opponent, the more shots it will take to drop him. Because it only holds twelve rounds before having to be reloaded, it will not do much damage to an opponent that is wearing a Covenant energy shield. Expect to put at least ten rounds into an enemy with an energy shield on. By that time, you will be dead. The pistol's weak points are as follows; it has limited range and will not reach an opponent that is quite a ways out on the battlefield (even if he is in visual range). Do not attempt to shoot at opponents that are too far away (the muzzle flash will give away your position). MA5B Assault Rifle This is a gas-operated and magazine-fed assault rifle, much like the AK-47 or M-16 assault rifles. It also fires a 7.62mm armor-piercing round. The magazine holds sixty rounds, and you can carry up to ten (600 rounds total). The rate of fire is so fast that it is limited by the marine's ability to aim, fire, and change magazines. Short controlled bursts are more accurate than fully automatic fire. The MA5B has an integrated computer display that shows the soldier how many rounds are left in the magazine, and the relative direction the soldier is facing (known as Threshold) for a point of reference. This allows the soldier to easily find his sense of direction when he gets turned around or disoriented. I used to hold down the trigger and fire away, and after I had emptied two full clips, I would always wonder why my enemy still stood. The reason was that most of those rounds missed my opponent. Now I circle strafe and use short, controlled bursts, and watch where I am aiming. I am now extremely deadly with the MA5B. Many of the people I play with have brushed off the MA5B as a piece of crap, but the fact of the matter is they do not follow the "#1 rule," (what I mentioned at the opening of this strategy guide). "A weapon is not just a tool, it is an extension of yourself, a part of you while it is in your hands, and the difference between life and death."

The MA5B is pretty much a close quarter weapon. It can hit an opponent from 100m out but is extremely inaccurate and very few rounds will actually hit your opponent. Get within 25m (or closer) of your opponent, and this is one of the deadliest weapons in the game and will kill an opponent in about three seconds. As with all weapons in Halo, shot placement is crucial. Do not aim for the arms and legs; aim for the torso, it will do more damage quicker. M90 Shotgun The shotgun is a pump-action magazine-fed (dual tubular non-detachable type) weapon. It fires eight gauge magnum (3.5") rounds and holds twelve at a time (you can carry up to 60 rounds). This is my weapon of choice, because it can kill multiple opponents at the same time (at close range), is extremely powerful, and is easy to maneuver. The M90 is the ultimate close range combat weapon. At an extremely close range, it will kill instantly with one shot (no matter where you hit the enemy at). It has a maximum range of about 85m, but is almost useless at this distance. Anywhere within 15-20m is effective, but not extremely deadly. If you want to devastate your opponent with two or three blasts, you must get within 10m of him. At this range your opponent will drop rather easily, but for guaranteed one-shot kills you must be within 2.5m of your enemy. Shot placement is also very important with the shotgun. If you shoot an opponent in the leg or arm from within 10-15m, it will do damage, but not as much as aiming for the torso or head will. Where you aim can be the difference between getting the kill and being killed. S2 AM Sniper Rifle The S2 AM sniper rifle is a gas-operated magazine-fed weapon. The magazine can hold four rounds, but you can only carry up to four magazines (twenty rounds total). It has a smart-linked scope with two levels of magnification (2X and 10X) attached. While using the scope, you have the option of night vision light amplification. It fires a 14.5mm x 114mm armor piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot round. These are tracer rounds, so make sure you have your target directly in site and can kill with a single headshot if possible, because once you fire you will give away your position. The 14.5 x 114mm APFSDS round is an anti-material munition and can easily over-penetrate several armored soldiers. Be sure to know what is on the other

side of your target, or you may hit one of your own men. This can be very handy when two or more enemies are close together. I have successfully shot and killed three targets with one shot on a few rare occasions. The S2 AM is pretty much a long-range firearm. It has a maximum range of 500m, but is very inaccurate at that distance. Get within 400m, and it only takes a maximum of two hits to kill an enemy. The ideal range is about 200m; any further than that is stretching the effectiveness of the scope and greatly reduces your chance of scoring a head shot. A head shot with the sniper rifle is an instant kill, no matter how far the distance. It can be used up close, but its limited magazine capacity and its large size limits its effectiveness. At a distance this is the most accurate and deadly firearm in the UNSC's arsenal. M 19 SSM Rocket Launcher The M 19 SSM is a portable and shoulder-fired rocket launcher. It is comprised of two major parts, the launcher and the magazine. The magazine is expendable and carriages two 102mm shaped-charged, high explosive rockets. A spare magazine can be carried for a total of 4 rounds (Although I think this may vary depending on mode being played). The rocket launcher is an excellent short and long-range weapon, but it has its drawbacks. It can easily hit a target that is 500+m away, but at far range, it can be easily dodged. The enemy can actually see the huge round coming at them and can dodge it accordingly. It is best at long range for anti-vehicle use and is especially effective against the Scorpion tank. It is also good for clearing out caves when enemy troops are holed up in them. The splash damage and shrapnel from the rocket launcher can be just as deadly as the round itself. When fighting outside at close range, this is a good substitute for the M90 shotgun (in properly trained hands). When fighting close quarters with the M 19 SSM, aim for the feet of your opponent, or he can dodge the round. But even when they are aimed at my feet, I have jumped over plenty of rockets in my combat experiences as the Master Chief. A well-placed shot towards the ground will blow your opponent sky high, or just splatter his body parts all over the ring world of Halo. Do not attempt to use the rocket launcher in small corridors or cramped caves, as the explosion will most likely damage or kill you. Also, do not attempt to rocket
jump like you can in Unreal Tournament or Quake III Arena. This is a realistic First Person Shooter, and a rocket at your own feet will bury you early. M9 HE-DP Grenade The M9 high explosive, dual-purpose grenade is a thrown fragmentation device. It can be used to disable vehicles (except Scorpion tanks, it will hurt the people driving or riding, but will not disable the tank) or as an anti-personnel weapon. It can be thrown, rolled, or ricocheted into places where direct fire cannot reach. By increasing the angle of the throw, you can throw them long distances. This is one of the most underused weapons in the game. Too many so-called Master Chiefs ignore this weapon, when in fact, it is one of the most valuable tools you have at your disposal. I use it for many purposes (including those mentioned above). I use it to clear out bases and caves, narrow hallways, nooks and crannies, etc. If I know I am going to, die I throw all of my grenades and blow everyone up with me. Sometimes this even stops my opponent from getting the kill, as I commit suicide. A suicide takes away a kill, but if you take at least one person with you, you have your kill back, and your opponent leaves empty handed without a kill for himself. You can even use grenades in non-standard ways, such as using them to blow weapons and items (camouflage and alien shield) away from your opponents so they cannot get to them. I use this tactic quite a bit; throw a grenade on a ledge holding a weapon. The weapon will be blown of the ledge, and you can pick it up for your own use. M41 LAAG This is the Warthog's light-aircraft gun and will be fully explored in the future when we cover Vehicles. That is it for this month. In the next issue of the Clan VGA newsletter, we will have Part 2: Covenant Weapons.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------[V. Reviews]----------------------+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A. Warcraft 3 By {VGA}Johngamer There are a lot of improvements upon the basic Real Time Strategy structure too. For instance, when you want to place a building where several of your troops are standing, you used to have to move them out of the way first. Now they automatically move when you place the building. This minor improvement can save you the precious seconds needed when your base is under siege. 10/10 Sound: The music and sound effects manage to bring you right into the game. The units still have their one-liners when you click them, and many are actually funny. The dialog in the single player campaigns is voiced out by your characters, and it is actually done well. 9/10 Replay: This game has so much replay value in it, that you could feasibly be hooked forever (figuratively speaking of course). Now that there are four races to master (each with their own playing style) you will get a lot of playing time out of this game. Not only that, but the single player campaigns are actually a very fun part of the game. And get this. they actually have a storyline, and it's good! A RTS with a good storyline. What will they think of next? 10/10 Now that you have read this review, there is only one thing left for you to do. Buy the game! Honestly, it is definitely worth the $60 asking price. -----------------------------------------------------------
B. Neverwinter Nights Reported by: {VGA} Ghosty Review by : {VGA} Macrogamer There really has never been a game that has successfully simulated Dungeons and Dragons on the computer (editor's note: Baldur's Gate did to a minor extent rules wise), but a new title comes very close. Today we will take a look at Neverwinter Nights, a role-playing game that delivers unlimited adventuring and unprecedented control. Neverwinter Nights will not become a persistent massively multiplayer roleplaying game like Everquest, and it does not offer a cool new fantasy world to explore like Ultima (a more traditional RPG). What Neverwinter Nights does have to offer are adventures powered by an advanced graphics engine, loyalty to the spirit and details of Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules, and all the power of as many imaginations as possible. Neverwinter Nights is a lot of game, even if it may only be potential. The potential to do anything is there. Neverwinter Nights does not look like Baldur's Gate; that is for certain. BioWare went with a completely new 3D engine for the graphics, and the result is fantastic. When zoomed in, the monsters and environments look detailed. No small feat considering that the environments consist of interchangeable tiles. The artwork from the character portraits to the cut scenes is uniform and consistent, and the spell effects are fabulous. It is thrilling to see some of these familiar D&D creatures come to life. From lowly orcs and ogres, to little-used creatures like pixies and ghosts. Massive and grotesque trolls, towering giants, and of course the show-stopping dragons add to the greatness of the game. A dragon breathing fire in this game is an amazing sight. The quality voice acting, sharp writing, and typically epic music all add up to a substantial package. It gets even better when you take control over it all and use it to make something that is yours. The best and most powerful feature in NWN is the tool set. It is a very powerful and surprisingly easy to use editor that only gets harder when you try something great. Just choose and drop objects to form your own design. You can design simple arenas, build your own adventure, or just recreate your favorite D&D module. It is all up to you, and that is what is great about NWN. Also included in the game is a DM client that allows the user to take control and change the adventure dynamically. The DM client can conduct conversations with third party software or fast typing, add monsters at a moments desire, and rescue players from death, almost anything a REAL DM can do. The DM client is a pow-

erful tool but still requires the DM to pay close attention to the game and prepare before hand, again much like tabletop D&D. The only caveat here is that; like D&D, the game is only as strong (or weak) as the DM. But a well-crafted module doesn't need one. You can also jump into games being run by DMs already. But multi-player isn't what some people expect, and is not at all what it is cracked up to be. For the most part, partly due to lack of experience and the immaturity of random 'net players, it is pretty unsatisfying to just jump in. Thankfully there is a single-player campaign to keep you busy during those down times. The 60-hour campaign included with NWN isn't superfluous. It is long, bold, and features the kind of slick storytelling BioWare is known for. You can create any character race and class you like and immediately you are immersed in the story line. A plague and a cult lie at the heart of the story, and it is way too tailored toward specific classes. Wizards will have a tougher time, and thieves will find they have very little to do but fight and deal with traps. The game seems to borrow a whole ream of pages from Blizzard's Diablo. The quests are full of pointless chests and barrels filled with junk. The game does showcase D&D monsters extremely well, and the combat system is a true sight to see. The side quests are also memorable and are perhaps among BioWare's best. Aside from the shortcomings of NWN, it is a great achievement in RPGs, and a game that the fans of the genre should enjoy. Ignoring the Adventures you can create or share with friends, the mod community surrounding this game is growing by leaps and bounds. Soon the very best RPG content will be free and downloadable by anyone with the game. The potential is all there, just waiting to be seized. Most critics give this game 4 out of 5. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------[VI. Full description

Sega's fast-paced taxicab series continues with the Xbox-exclusive release of Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller. As in the previous two installments, the basic premise is the same: pick up pedestrians and take them to their destinations as quickly as possible while avoiding oncoming traffic and other potential hazards. The setting for this version takes place in a fictional city called Glitter Oasis. Patterned after Las Vegas, the city's colorful passengers range from boxers and musicians to exotic dancers and body builders.
