Outstanding value. I have no reason to turn my $10000 home system on. The ear buds fit perfectly, the noise isolation is outstanding. I know I marked both comfortable AND uncomfortable... let me explain. I got theses as a birthday present for my wife. I use these to listen to multimedia on my laptop. Small size and portability are important, and on these points, these phones are quite good.

INFRA-RED TECHNOLOGY

The SZI 1029 is a high power infra-red radiator. In a cordless infra-red sound transmission system it transforms the electrical signal delivered by an infra-red modulator or by an audio source into invisible infra-red light and radiates this IR light into a room. In contrast to radio transmission infra-red transmission is limited to the room, thus other systems can be operated in neighbouring rooms without interference.
PROPAGATION OF INFRA-RED LIGHt
The propagation of the infra-red signal radiated by the SZI 1029 can be compared to the propagation of normal daylight or artifical (lamp) light. Thus it is subject to similar conditions when it falls onto different materials:

The high-power radiator SZI 1029 is switched on by the IR carrier signal that is produced by the modulator. Commercially available 50 coaxial cables with BNC connectors are used for feeding sig nals from the modulator to the SZI 1029 radiator.

IR light

IR light IR-Licht
The infra-red radiator diodes in the high power radiator respond to the received signals and radiate modulated infra-red light. Depending on the model the radiator delivers a radiating power of 5 or 10 W (see AVAILABLE MODELS).

Reflection Reflexion

WIDEBAND
Infra-red wideband transmission systems are chiefly used for transmitting audio signals in hi-fi quality. The two available wideband channels (2.3 MHz and 2.8 MHz) are internationally standardized and are either used for two mono channels or for stereo transmission.

NARROW-BAND

Infra-red narrow-band transmission systems allow the transmission of up to 32 mono channels with a slightly reduced audio frequency response. They are ideal for multi-channel interpretation systems and multilingual information systems.
IMPACT OF CURTAINS, CARPETS, AND PAINTS
Dark and heavy materials, curtains, carpets, panellings, and wall
coverings tend to absorb the light, a good reception can only be achieved in direct line of sight of the infra-red radiator.
Roughcast and strongly structured wallpapers (such as woodchip,
embossed or fabric papers) reflect the light unevenly but allow a more uniform propagation of the infra-red signal.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

Conference and simultaneous interpretation systems High quality cordless sound transmission in recording studios or for hi-fi systems
Smooth and bright walls, smooth tiled floors and windows are
highly reflective and are thus favourable for the propagation of in fra-red light.
Different wall paints may reflect infra-red light differently although
they have the same colour. This is due to the type and thecomposition of the paint pigmentation. The power which is necessary to irradiate a room varies accordingly.
IMPACT OF EXTRANEOUS LIGHT Daylight and artificial light in a room also have an impact on the IR reception. Since the spectrum of this light also contains infra-red portions it can interfere with the useful signal radiated by the SZI 1029. At worst, the reception is disturbed by hissing noise.

COMPUTING THE RADIATING POWER
During single channel operation (switch set to MONO ), every SZI 1029 radiator will supply an area of about 1000 sq.m. The SZI 1029-10 radiators are able to supply approximately double this area. When switched to narrow-band multi-channel operation (switch set to MULTI ) power output and thus irradiated area are reduced by approximately 35 % (see RADIATING POWER DURING MULTICHANNEL OPERATION).
Extraneous light Fremdlicht
A simple formula facilitates the calculation of the number of radiators necessary to irradiate a given room: RULE OF THUMB
Grundflchein sq. m.x Anzahl of channels surface area in m2 x number der Kanle 650

IR-Licht IR light

Number of radiators (SZI 1029) =
Number of radiators (SZI 1029-10) =
surface area in sq. m. x number of channels 1300
Fremdlicht Extraneous light
PROPAGATION OF INFRA-RED LIGHT
The high power radiator SZI 1029 radiates the infra-red light in a lobar shape. With increasing distance the intensity becomes weaker. When a receiver leaves the irradiated area the transmission is interrupted. Recei vers without squelch will produce a hissing noise, receivers with squelch will mute.

RADIATING POWER

Number of channels Example: 12
RADIATING POWER DURING MULTI-CHANNEL OPERATION
(Not for SZI 1029-T models) The number of transmitted channels has an impact on the radiated power of the infra-red radiator SZI 1029. The power is uniformly divided in such a way that, for instance, in a system with 12 narrow-band channels only 1/12 of the desired radiating power is available for each audio channel.
PUTTING THE RADIATOR INTO OPERATION MAINS CONNECTION
Insert the mains connector and secure it with the steel clamp.
CONNECTING AN IR RADIATOR
After having connected the radiator to the mains, the IR input of the SZI 1029 has to be connected to the IR output of the modulator. Several co-axial cables are available for this purpose (see ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES). The cables can be connected to one another using a BNC coupler GZV 1019 A.

Install the SZI 1029 high power radiator in a vertical (or almost vertical) position. The cables are guided downwards. The vertical position ensures sufficient cooling of the radiator - air can circulate through the cooling fins that are integrated into the sides of the radiator.

IR input BNC

IR output BNC for extension radiators
For permanently installed systems you should use commercially available 50 coaxial cables, such as RG 58 (75 cables can be used if 50 cables are unavailable). If you want to use several SZI 1029 radiators you have to connect them in series. This is done by connecting the output BNC socket of the first radiator with the IR input BNC socket of the second radiator. A maximum of 100 radiators can be connected in series. The maximum total length of the cable should not exceed 1500 m. After having connected the last radiator you can put the transmission system into operation by switching on the modulator. It transmits a carrier signal which automatically switches on the radiators. When the carrier signal stops, the radiators switch off automatically. N.B.: In order to avoid standing waves a terminating impedance of 50 should be connected to the last radiator (or 75 terminating impedance if 75 cable was used).
SINGLE-CHANNEL/MULTICHANNEL OPERATION Selector switch singlechannel (Mono)/multichannel (Multi) The SZI 1029 high power radiator is provided with an interchangeable thread for mounting it to stands with 3/8" or 1/2 threads using an adaptor (included in the scope of delivery).
CANCELLATION WITH GREATER CABLE LENGTHS
The length of the cable between two neighbouring radiators should not exceed 75 m, otherwise signal cancellation can occur when the radiation is not in phase! Do not forget the terminating impedance!

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR

If one power block fails, transmission quality is not considerably affected. Only if more than one third of all the blocks fail to operate, the red LED will light up in addition to the green one, thus indicating that the device will have to be repaired.

RISK OF CANCELLATION!

OPERATION INDICATOR The indicators work as follows: Red Indicator Only: The radiator is connected to the mains but there is no IR signal present. Green Indicator Only: IR signal is present, the radiator is working normally. Red & Green Indicator:FAULT CONDITION! 30 % or more of the diodes are not working and the radiator should be returned to your local Sennheiser agent for repair.

Green LED, operation

red LED, mains supply indicator and warning light for reduced IR radiating-power (malfunction indicator)
MALE TWO CHAINS! DISTANCE BETWEEN RADIATORS AND RECEIVERS Please observe a minimum distance of 2 m between radiators and receivers as otherwise the receiver input stage could be overloaded. This would result in a very poor transmission quality.

The SZI 1029 high power radiator is provided with 12 independent output stages, each stage amplifies the received signal for a power block of 12 infra-red LEDs. The SZI 1029-10 models with 24 independent output stages have double the power.
If possible the radiators should be installed in such a way that they are directly orientated towards the infra-red receivers. For best reception the radiators should be installed as high as possible with a slight downward inclination. For uniform irradiation of a given room the radiators should be installed decentralised, usually in the corners of the room.

SZI 1029 The SZI 1029 is a high-power radiator for wideband or narrow-band signals from any modulator. Its mains unit automatically adapts to mains voltages of V and mains frequencies between 50 and 60 Hz, the individual product variants only differing in the type of mains cable supplied. The only exception is the SZI 1029-24 which operates on 24 V DC. For 24-V equipment, mains voltage regulations are no longer applicable, thus making installations by audio-visual companies much easier. All controls and connectors of the SZI 1029 are on the base. A 5/8 thread with an adaptor for conversion to 3/8 and 1/2 threads makes for versatile mounting. If the radiator is to be stand-mounted, its cables are guided unobtrusively down the stand. For ceiling mounting, the SZI 1029 is simply turned upside down (the bottom faces the ceiling) and the cables are guided along the ceiling. SZI 1029 radiator The 132 IR diodes of the SZI 1029 are arranged in independent groups of eleven. The operational status of the diodes and the radiator is indicated by a green and a red LED at the front. If only the red LED is lit, the radiator is in stand-by mode and a mains voltage is present, but there is no RF carrier. If only the green LED is lit, the radiator is operating and transmitting an IR signal. The radiator switches on automatically as soon as it receives an RF signal of at least 50 mV. When the RF signal is no longer present, the radiator switches back to stand-by. If both the red and the green LED are lit, the radiator indicates a malfunction: more than four diode groups fail to operate. The radiator will continue to operate at a reduced radiating power but it should be repaired as soon as possible. The sockets and controls are on the base of the SZI 1029 (see diagram on the left). On each side, the radiator is tted with a heat sink. When installing the radiator, care should be taken that these sinks are not covered and that the radiator is not mounted horizontally. The optimum position is vertical or almost vertical so that air can circulate freely through the cooling ns and heat is dissipated quickly. The modulator signal is fed to the BNC RF input. An automatic modulation control compensates for cable losses and ensures an optimum modulation level for the IR diodes. At the RF output socket (BNC) the signal can be daisy-chained to additional radiators. The mono/multi switch increases the radiating power by 3 dB when set to mono. Thus, the coverage area is approx. 50 % larger, but at the same time, the THD becomes greater, which would lead to interference with higher channels in multichannel operation. For this reason, you should only switch to mono for singlechannel applications and use the multi position for multi-channel operation. The SZI 1029 radiator has a 5/8 thread and is supplied with an adaptor for conversion to 3/8 or 1/2 threads. You will nd suitable attachments such as mounting plates or table stands in the chapter Accessories. The radiators IEC mains connector can be secured by a steel clamp. The SZI 1029-24 variant is equipped with an XLR-4 connector as power supply socket.

When planning and installing an IR system you have to pay attention to use the correct terminating impedance for the radiator chains. Sennheiser IR modulators have an output impedance of approx. 50 , whereas the radiators have a much higher input impedance of > 5 k. This headroom allows you to connect many radiators without any problems. In RF transmission, the output impedance has to be terminated with approximately the same input impedance. If this is not done, reections may occur at the end of the RF chain and disturb the transmission. So, for reasons of reliability, the end of an RF chain should always be provided with a 50- terminating impedance. Please note that you should not use T adaptors in your RF chain as this would halve the terminating impedance. 50 For large installations you should use both RF outputs of the modulator and create two RF chains. This not only increases reliability but also avoids cancelling out between radiators due to time delay. Please refer to the chapter Planning Theory for more information on time delay and cancellations. 50 SZI 1029-10 The SZI 1029-10 is Sennheisers most powerful radiator. 264 diodes in 24 independent groups provide an average radiating power of 10 W. The SZI 1029-10 is connected and operated like the smaller SZI 1029. The radiators higher power is a special asset when it comes to covering large halls or auditoria with high ceilings, especially when a large number of channels are used. The SZI 1029-10 is also interesting for rental companies: due to the higher radiating power less radiators are required and IR systems can be set up and taken down again more quickly. Sennheiser high-power radiators are convection cooled so no cooling fans are used which could cause disturbing noises.

Coverage Area and Polar Diagrams The coverage area of the SZI 1029 and SZI 1029-10 high-power radiators depends on the number of channels transmitted (see also Multi-Channel Operation). For single-channel applications, the coverage area is up to approx. 800 m2 for the SZI 1029 and up to 1,600 m2 for the -10 variant. The chapter Practical Planning has already given you some basic information on the recommended number and position of radiators. Please bear in mind that the devices radiate directionally, i.e. reception outside the radiation angle is only possible if the signal is reflected by walls and ceilings. The polar diagram on the left is that of the SZI 1029. You can see that the signalto-noise ratio decreases the further you go away from the radiator. Eventually, the noise becomes so loud in relation to the useful signal that the squelch in the IR receiver mutes the audio output. A signal-to-noise ratio of 26 dB (the outer characteristic in the polar diagrams) gives an intelligible but noisy signal. A signal-to-noise ratio of > 40 dB, on the other hand, ensures a clear audio signal without the annoying noise. To cover a room more evenly, you can mount your radiators at one point and align them at an angle to one another. In the polar diagram on the left, two SZI 1029 have been mounted at an angle of 40 to each other. For more information on how to work with polar diagrams, please refer to the chapter on Planning Theory.

Multi-Channel Operation All SZI 1029 models are suitable for multi-channel transmissions provided that a suitable modulator is used. The radiator coverage area, however, decreases proportionally with the number of channels the radiator is transmitting. If, for example, your system transmits eight narrow-band channels, the radiating power is uniformly divided between all eight channels. The coverage area is reduced to 1/8th of the area achieved in single-channel operation and a 5-W radiator, for example, will cover 100 m2 instead of the 800 m2 in single-channel operation.
