Installing the glass and the glass protector
1. Fix the glass protector to the top glass at each corner. Make sure the "TEMPERED" sticker on top of the glass is facing up. TOP VIEW Step 1

3. Place the bottom glass on top of the subwoofer box. Make sure the TEMPERED sticker on top of the glass is facing up. Notes: It is advisable for the top glass to be carried by 2 persons. Top glass with sticker on its surface, must face upwards. Metal frame must not be removed to ensure safety. The maximum load for the top glass on the unit is 100 kg. The glasses are made of reinforced glass, but dropping pointed objects on them or strongly hitting the surface may cause them to break. Top and bottom glass are not fastened to the unit. Always take care when transporting it, otherwise these parts may fall off and there is a risk of damage and injury.

Aerial connection
Supplied FM aerial: Connect the FM aerial wire to the FM 75 OHMS socket and position the FM aerial wire in the direction where the strongest signal can be received. Note: Placing the aerial on the unit or near the AC power lead may cause noise pickup. Place the aerial away from the unit for better reception.

Caution: Before moving the TV away, please ensure that the anti-slip cushions underneath it have been taken out. This is to prevent the top glass from falling as it might stick to the TV during shifting.
Placing the TV or other equipment
1. Please ensure that the equipment is positioned in a well-ventilated area and ensure that there is at least 10 cm (4") of free space along the sides and back of the equipment.

After checking all the connections have been made correctly, connect the AC power lead to the AC power input socket, then to the wall socket.

To turn the power on
Press the ON/STAND-BY button. If the power does not turn on, check whether the power lead is plugged in properly.
To COAXIAL input socket
Note: When connecting with an optical digital cable, set the digital output of the digital tuner to PCM. Refer to the operation manual of the digital tuner.
To set the unit to stand-by mode: Press the ON/STAND-BY button again. Note: After the unit enters the power stand-by mode, wait a few seconds to turn on again.
Notes: Never use a power lead other than the one supplied. Otherwise, a malfunction or an accident may occur. Unplug the AC power lead from the wall socket if the unit will not be in use for a prolonged period of time.
Battery installation
Open the battery cover. Insert the batteries according to the direction indicated in the battery compartment. When inserting or removing the batteries, push them towards the battery terminals. Close the cover. Notes concerning use: Replace the batteries if the operating distance is reduced or if the operation becomes erratic. Purchase 2 "AA" size batteries (UM/ SUM-3, R6, HP-7 or similar). Periodically clean the transmitter on the remote control and the sensor on the unit with a soft cloth. Exposing the sensor on the unit to strong light may interfere with operation. Change the lighting or the direction of the unit. Keep the remote control away from moisture, heat, shock, and vibrations.
Test of the remote control
Point the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the unit. Precautions for battery use: Replace all old batteries with new ones at the same time. Do not mix old and new batteries. Remove the batteries if the unit will not be used for long periods of time. This will prevent potential damage due to battery leakage. Caution: Do not use rechargeable batteries (nickel-cadmium battery, etc.). Installing the batteries incorrectly may cause the unit to malfunction. Batteries (battery pack or batteries installed) shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine, fire or the like. Battery removal: Open the battery cover and pull up the battery to take out. General control
Notes: Muting is also cancelled when either the volume, VS, Sound Mode or Audistry button is pressed. When the unit is turned off and back on again, muting is cancelled.
Subwoofer level control
The subwoofer level can be adjusted. To increase the level, hold down the SHIFT button and press the SUBWOOFER LEVEL + button. To decrease the level, hold down the SHIFT button and press the SUBWOOFER LEVEL - button.
Note: When sound from the subwoofer is distorted, decrease the subwoofer level.
To change the display brightness (2 levels)
You can switch the display brightness by pressing the DIMMER button.
Display control Volume control
Main unit operation: Press the VOL + button to increase the volume and the VOL - button for decreasing. Remote control operation: Press the VOL. + button to increase the volume and the VOL. - button for decreasing. Clock can be displayed during power On/ Off condition. Display clock: Press the DISPLAY button and the time display will appear for about 5 seconds. To cancel, press the DISPLAY button again. Note: If clock is not set previously, "ADJUST" will be displayed for a while.

Muting
The volume is muted temporarily when pressing the MUTE button on the remote control. Press again to restore the volume.
Setting the clock (Remote Control only)
By setting the unit to the correct time, you can use it not only as a clock but also for timer playback.
Press the TIMER ADJUST or button to adjust the hour and then press the MEMORY button. Press the TIMER ADJUST or button once to advance the time by 1 hour. Hold it down to advance continuously. When the 12-hour display is selected, "AM" will change automatically to "PM".
Press the TIMER ADJUST or button to adjust the minutes and then press the MEMORY button. Press the TIMER ADJUST or button once to advance the time by 1 minute. Hold it down to advance continuously. The hour will not advance even if minutes advance from "59" to "00". The clock starts from "0" second (seconds are not displayed). The time disappears after approx.5 seconds.
In this example, the clock is set for the 24-hour (0:00) display
Press the CLOCK / TIMER button. Within 5 seconds, press the TIMER ADJUST or button to select ADJUST and then press the MEMORY button.
Press the TIMER ADJUST or button to select the 24hour or 12-hour display and then press the MEMORY button.
The 24-hour display will appear. (0:00 - 23:59) AM 12:00 The 12-hour display will appear. (AM 12:00 - PM 11:59) AM 0:00 The 12-hour display will appear. (AM 0:00 - PM 11:59) Note that this can only be set when the unit is rst installed or it has been reset (see page 33).
To confirm the time display: Press the DISPLAY button. The time display will appear for about 5 seconds. Note: The "ADJUST" or time will flash at the push of the DISPLAY button when the AC power supply is restored after a power failure or unplugging the unit. To readjust the clock: Perform "Setting the clock" from step 1. If the "ADJUST" is not flashing in step 1, step 2 (for selecting the 24-hour or 12-hour display) will be skipped. To change the 24-hour or 12-hour display: 1 Clear all the programmed contents. [Refer to "Clearing all the memory (reset)" on page 33 for details]. 2 Perform "Setting the clock" from the beginning.
The Dolby Virtual Speaker is deactivated.
Notes: The DVS default setting is "ON". When setting the DVS mode to "ON", the preset sound mode and Audistry (SOUND SPACE mode, MONO TO STEREO mode) are cancelled. (The NATURAL BASS mode and the INTELLIGENT VOLUME mode are not cancelled.) Monaural signals do not generate surround effects. DVS sound effect may not be obtained depending on signal types (the Dolby Virtual Speaker indicator blinks). In this case, set the DVS mode to "OFF".
Audistry sound mode
Enjoy a variety of sounds by each or any combination of the 4 modes. Press the button for your desired mode. Press it again to cancel. SOUND SPACE (Sound stage expansion) The 4 speakers create spacious stereo sounds. NATURAL BASS (Bass sound expansion) The system's low-frequency characteristics realise the optimal bass sounds. INTELLIGENT VOLUME (Peak limiter and expander) Appropriate listener-friendly volumes realised; the volume is decreased during loud sounds, and increased during low sounds. MONO TO STEREO (Mono Stereo conversion) You can enjoy monaural sound sources with a stereo-like effect. (The MONO TO STEREO indicator lights up.) (The INTELLIGENT VOLUME indicator lights up.) (The NATURAL BASS indicator lights up.) (The SOUND SPACE indicator lights up.)

Notes: When setting each mode of Audistry to "ON", the preset sound mode setting is cancelled. When setting the SOUND SPACE or MONO TO STEREO mode to "ON", the DVS setting is also cancelled. (It is not cancelled even if the NATURAL BASS or INTELLIGENT VOLUME mode is set to "ON".) The SOUND SPACE or MONO TO STEREO mode may not be activated depending on the input signal type. If the SOUND SPACE or MONO TO STEREO indicator blinks, the effect of these modes cannot be obtained.
This product incorporates decoders supporting the Dolby Digital system and DTS system. DTS (Digital Theatre Systems) One of the digital audio systems for theatrical use. As the sound quality is emphasised, you can enjoy the realistic sound effect in the home theatre system. Lights up when detecting DTS signal.
Dolby Digital
One of the digital audio systems for theatrical use. You can also enjoy the stereophonic effect in the home theatre system. Lights up when detecting Dolby Digital signal.
You can enjoy various sounds using the preset sound mode, Dolby Virtual Speaker (DVS), Audistry, etc. (See pages 17 - 20.)
Dolby Pro Logic
System expanding 2ch stereo sound to more spacious sound. When setting Dolby Virtual speaker to "ON", Dolby Pro Logic is activated to enjoy the stereo sound effect. Lights up when Dolby Pro Logic is activated.
Listening to the radio
Press the (TUNING or ) button on the remote control to tune in to the desired station. Manual tuning: Press the (TUNING) button as many times as required to tune in to the desired station. Auto tuning: When the (TUNING) button is pressed for more than 0.5 seconds, scanning will start automatically and the tuner will stop at the first receivable broadcast station. Notes: When radio interference occurs, auto scan tuning may stop automatically at that point. Auto scan tuning will skip weak signal stations. To stop the auto tuning, press the TUNING button again. When an RDS (Radio Data System) station is tuned in, the frequency will be displayed first, and then the RDS indicator will light up. Finally, the station name will appear. Full auto tuning can be achieved for RDS stations "ASPM", see page 25. To receive an FM stereo transmission: Press the TUNER button to select stereo mode and ST indicator will be displayed. " " will appear when an FM broadcast is in stereo. If the FM reception is weak, press the TUNER button to extinguish the "ST" indicator. Memorising a station
You can store 40 FM stations in memory and recall them at the push of a button. (Preset tuning)
To recall a memorised station

To erase entire preset memory
Hold the CLEAR button down for 4 seconds or more. Whilst "CLEAR" is flashing, press the MEMORY button.
Within 5 seconds, press the PRESET ( select the preset channel number.

Store the stations in memory, in order, starting with preset channel 1.
Within 5 seconds, press the MEMORY button to store that station in memory.
Press the TUNER button to select the FM stereo band.
Press and hold down the RDS ASPM button for at least 3 seconds.
After "ASPM" has flashed for about 4 seconds, scanning will start (87.50 - 108.00 MHz).
When an RDS station is found, "RDS" will appear for a short time and station will be stored in memory.
After scanning, the number of stations stored in memory will be displayed for 4 seconds, and then "END" will appear for 4 seconds.
Notes for RDS operation
If any of the following events occur, it does not mean that the unit is faulty: "PS", "NO PS" and a station name appear alternately, and the unit does not operate properly. If a particular station is not broadcasting properly or a station is conducting tests, the RDS reception function may not work properly. When you receive an RDS station whose signal is too weak, information like the station name may not be displayed. "NO PS" or "NO PTY" will flash for about 5 seconds, and then the frequency will be displayed.
Whilst the selected programme type is flashing (within 6 seconds), press the RDS PTY button.
After the selected programme type has been lit for 2 seconds, "SEARCH" will appear, and the search operation will start. Notes: If the display has stopped flashing, start again from step 2. If the unit finds a desired programme type, the corresponding channel number will flash for about 4 seconds, and then the station name will flash for 7 seconds, which will remain lit. If you want to listen to the same programme type of another station, press the RDS PTY button whilst the channel number or station name is flashing. The unit will look for the next station. If no station can be found, "NOTFOUND" will appear for 4 seconds. If you select the traffic programme: If you select the traffic programme (TP) in step 3, "TP" will appear. (This does not mean that you can listen to the traffic information at that time.) When the traffic information is broadcast, "TA" will appear. To specify station names and select stations manually: You can select a station by specifying the name (BBC R1, BBC R2, etc.) from the stations stored in memory. Before starting this operation, you must store one or more station names in memory. 1 Press the TUNER button to select the FM band. 2 Press the PRESET ( or ) button to select a desired station. 3 The station name will be displayed for 6 seconds. Then the display will change.
To recall stations in memory
To specify programme types and select stations (PTY search): You can search a station by specifying the programme type (news, sports, traffic programme, etc. see page 27) from the stations in memory.
Press the TUNER button to select the FM stereo. Press the RDS PTY button.
"SELECT" and "PTY TI" will appear alternately for about 6 seconds.
Within 6 seconds, press the PRESET ( select the programme type.
Each time the button is pressed, the programme type will appear. If the button is held down for more than 0.5 seconds, the programme type will appear continuously.
Descriptions of the PTY (Programme Type) codes, TP (Traffic Programme) and TA (Traffic Announcement). You can search for and receive the following PTY, TP and TA signals.
NEWS AFFAIRS Short accounts of facts, events and publicly expressed views, reportage and actuality. Topical programme expanding or enlarging upon the news, generally in different presentation style or concept, including debate, or analysis. Programmes whose purpose is to impart advice in the widest sense. Programme concerned with any aspect of sport. Programme intended primarily to educate, of which the formal element is fundamental. All radio plays and serials. Programmes concerned with any aspect of national or regional culture, including language, theatre, etc. Programmes about the natural sciences and technology. Used for mainly speech-based programmes usually of lightentertainment nature, not covered by other categories. Examples include: quizzes, panel games, personality interviews. Commercial music, which would generally be considered to be of current popular appeal, often featuring in current or recent record sales charts. Contemporary modern music, usually written and performed by young musicians. Current contemporary music considered to be "easylistening", as opposed to Pop, Rock or Classical, or one of the specialised music styles, Jazz, Folk or Country. Music in this category is often but not always, vocal, and usually of short duration. Classical music for general, rather than specialist appreciation. Examples of music in this category are instrumental music, and vocal or choral works. Performances of major orchestral works, symphonies, chamber music, etc., and including Grand Opera. Musical styles not fitting into any of the other categories. Particularly used for specialist music of which Rhythm & Blues and Reggae are examples. Weather reports and forecasts and meteorological information. LEISURE Programmes concerned with recreational activities in which the listener might participate. Examples include, Gardening, Fishing, Antique collecting, Cooking, Food & Wine, etc. Polyphonic, syncopated music characterised by JAZZ improvisation. Songs which originate from, or continue the musical tradition COUNTRY of the American Southern States. Characterised by a straightforward melody and narrative story line. NATION M Current Popular Music of the Nation or Region in that country's language, as opposed to International 'Pop' which is usually US or UK inspired and in English. OLDIES Music from the so-called "golden age" of popular music. FOLK M Music which has its roots in the musical culture of a particular nation, usually played on acoustic instruments. The narrative or story may be based on historical events or people. DOCUMENT Programme concerned with factual matters, presented in an investigative style. TEST Broadcast when testing emergency broadcast equipment or receivers. ALARM Emergency announcement made under exceptional circumstances to give warning of events causing danger of a general nature. TP Broadcasts which carry traffic announcements. TA Traffic announcements are being broadcast.

Timer and sleep operation (Remote Control only)
You can use the unit as an alarm clock by setting the timer. Before setting timer: 1 Set the unit to the correct time (page 15). If it is not set, you cannot use the timer function. 2 Prepare the sound source for playback. 3 Store radio stations (page 23)
Press the TIMER ADJUST or button to adjust the minutes and then press the MEMORY button.
The start time is set and the finish time (1 hour later) will be displayed automatically.

Setting the timer
Turn the power on and press the CLOCK / TIMER button. Set the unit to the correct time if "STANDBY" does not appear.
Adjust the volume with the TIMER ADJUST or button and press the MEMORY button. Settings are displayed in order and the unit will enter the timer stand-by mode.
Within 10 seconds, press the TIMER ADJUST or button to select "TIMER SET", and press the MEMORY button.
Caution: This unit cannot set the timer of other equipment. To perform the timer playback using other equipment, you should also set the timer on the equipment separately.
Press the TIMER ADJUST or button to adjust the hour and then press the MEMORY button.
Set the time to finish as in steps 3 and 4 above. Switch input with the DIGITAL 1 TIMER ADJUST or button, and then press the TUNER MEMORY button. When you select the tuner, LINE3 select a station by pressing the TIMER ADJUST or PRESET or button, and then press the MEMORY button. If a station has not been programmed, "NO P SET" will be displayed.

Setting the sleep timer
You can set the unit to the power stand-by mode at the specified time. To confirm the remaining sleep time: 1 Whilst "SLEEP" is indicated, press the CLOCK / TIMER button. 2 Within 10 seconds, press the TIMER ADJUST or button to select "SLEEP".

Many potential problems can be resolved by the owner without calling a service technician. If something is wrong with this product, check the following before calling your authorised SHARP dealer or service centre.
Symptom No sound is heard. Possible cause Is input switching (selection) proper? Is muting activated? Is the volume level set to "0"? Is the speaker connection lead connected properly? Is the subwoofer sound level set to the minimum or maximum level? Move the unit away from any computers or mobile phones. Set this unit to the power stand-by mode and then turn it back on. If the unit still malfunctions, reset it. Is the unit unplugged? The protection circuit may be activated. Unplug and plug in the power lead again after 5 minutes or more. Is the display set to "OFF mode"? Change it to the ON mode.
Symptom The remote control does not operate properly. Possible cause Is the battery polarity respected? Are the batteries dead? Is the distance or angle incorrect? Are there any obstructions in front of the unit? Is the remote control sensor exposed to strong light (inverter fluorescent light, direct sunlight, etc.)? Is the remote control for another equipment used simultaneously? Is the AC power lead of the unit plugged in? Are the batteries inserted? Is the manufacturer number correct? Depending on the model, some or all functions may not be operable using the remote control of this unit. In this case, use the supplied remote control.
The sound from subwoofer is not well balanced. Noise is heard during playback. When a button is pressed, the unit does not respond. The power is not turned on.
The unit cannot be turned on with the remote control. The TV or DVD player cannot be operated with the remote control.
The information is not displayed even if the unit is turned on.
Troubleshooting chart (continued)
If problem occurs
When this product is subjected to strong external interference (mechanical shock, excessive static electricity, abnormal supply voltage due to lightning, etc.) or if it is operated incorrectly, it may malfunction. If such a problem occurs, do the following: 1 Set the unit to the stand-by mode and turn the power on again. 2 If the unit is not restored in the previous operation, unplug and plug in the unit, and then turn the power on. Note: If neither operation above restores the unit, clear all the memory by resetting it.
Error indicators and warnings
When you fail to perform operations properly, the following messages are displayed on the unit. Display Meaning The cooling fan at the rear of the unit does not run. Unplug the AC power lead and check if foreign objects get caught around the cooling fan. Malfunction of the surround circuit. Place the unit away from noise source and plug the AC power lead into another wall socket. (*) Malfunction of circuits other than the surround circuit. Place the unit away from noise source and plug the AC power lead into another wall socket. (*) When there is no input signal. Play back the connected equipment. Nonstandard signal. Cannot be recognised. Signals other than DOLBY DIGITAL, DTS, Linear PCM cannot be recognised. Poor connection of the digital audio input terminal. Turn off the unit and check if the cable is connected properly. When the protection circuit of the amplifier is activated. See left.
Clearing all the memory (reset)
1 Unplug the unit. 2 Whilst holding down the FUNCTION button, plug in the AC power lead. "RESET" is displayed on the display for about 1 second, the unit is turned off. 3 Press the ON/STAND-BY button again to turn the power on.
Caution: If the unit is reset, each setting returns to default. When the protection circuit is activated: If the speaker connection lead is short-circuited, the protection circuit will be activated. When the protection circuit functions, the unit is turned off automatically. At that time, the timer indicator blinks. Unplug the AC power lead and plug it in again after 5 minutes or more. Then check the operation. (*) Timer indicator
(*): Should the same message appear even if the unit is unplugged and plugged in or is set to the stand-by mode and on again, contact your local dealer where you purchased the unit.
Maintenance
Cleaning the cabinet
Periodically wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth. Do not use chemicals for cleaning (petrol, paint thinner, etc.). It may damage the cabinet finish. Do not apply oil to the inside of each component. It may cause malfunctions.
