Artie Almeida takes you behind the scenes in her classroom!
Artie Almeidas FUN FOUNDATIONS FOR RECORDER - Volume 1
Hands-on and Step-by-step, How Artie integrates recorders into her amazing Bear Lake music program. Music arranged by Paul Jennings Teachers who have spent time in Artie Almeidas many workshops know what a creative, natural teacher she is, and that she is wonderful at transferring her teaching ideas into words in the resources she has published. Thats why we were so pleased to feature her in each issue of RECORDER CLASSROOM magazine with a series of richly developed columns about how she integrates recorders into the fabric of her fabulous program at Bear Lake. In this kit, we combine these great resources for teachers everywhere. As a matter of fact, there is so much content here that we are breaking it into two jam-packed volumes, the first of which we are releasing this year. It stands on its own, as did each column, and is a must for teachers at any point in their careers. The Teachers Handbook is the heart of the kit, and its many sections take you step-by-step through Arties program as it has evolved in the more than 20 years she has been developing it. Beyond basic technique there are sections on air production and management, instrument selection and care, funding, ensembles, repertoire, and so much more. And this is not a dry, academic work. It is a successful teacher talking to friends about how she does it. More than text. In addition to the narrative, this kit features other specific resources, including games and other activities for teaching and retention, as well as the masters to let you print and produce cards, forms, and other things needed for the activities. And there is music! Artie has created teaching songs, warm-ups, and exercises, each arranged by Paul Jennings and recorded by the great musicians who you hear on all Plank Road Publishing products. You will find these on the CD (or MP3s on the downloadable edition) included with the kit. Some extras will also be found on the special web site we are developing for this project, FunFoundationsForRecorder.com This powerful product is available in three formats: Handbook/CD, Downloadable PDFs/MP3s, or the best of both worlds, our CONVENIENCE COMBO KIT. In summer 2011, visit our web site MusicK8.com to see full content description and to listen to excerpts of the music. B BAG AND BEYOND
Amazingly Cool Songs For Beginning Recorder by Paul Jennings, Teresa Jennings, John Riggio, and Karl Hitzemann Weve put together the first collection of fabulous recorder songs from our premier RECORDER CLASSROOM magazine. This versatile resource provides lots of flexibility for your classroom by giving you easier and harder versions of some of the songs, or faster and slower tempos, and plenty of teaching notes about the songs. Whatever the age or ability of your students, youll find this an invaluable addition to your curriculum. Fortify your recorder program with this wonderful recorder collection that includes: B Cool - This Latin jazz flavored tune is a fun way to work on the note B, but it also has a version using B, A, and G, so you can use it with beginning players or challenge others and even perform it as a duet! You may use it as a lesson on improv, a warm-up, or as a chance to cement posture and hand position its full of options. Find A Happy Place - An upbeat, breezy jazz tune, this is fun, easy-to-play, and gives you the option of using both soprano and alto recorders. Find A Happy Place uses the notes B, A, and G on soprano and E, D, and C on alto recorder. The feel-good groove with a rollicking piano motif and some great improvised alto sax lines will make your students smile! Hungarian Rhapso-B - Franz Liszt might be cringing, but we had a lot of fun adapting his Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 into a piece for recorder. While the wild and zany accompaniment clips along, all your recorder players have to do is play the note B. There is also an optional A towards the end of the tune. Sure to be a student favorite. Drifting Slowly - This is a nice exercise designed to teach the rhythm dotted quarter, eighth, quarter, quarter. Its a simple rhythm, but can sometimes be a bit of an obstacle. Set in a relaxed folk/rock style, the melody of this tune is distinctive, but limits the notes to just B, A, and G, so the players can concentrate on the rhythms. Cheesy Feet - Weve provided both a cool and mellow, swingin jazz arrangement of this tune and a sharp and crunchy, funky rock arrangement, so you can choose whatever flavor suits your mood. In both arrangements, the notes B, A, and G are used, with the option of adding E on the funky edition for your more advanced players. It is also a great chance to talk about and have your students try improvisation. Youll appreciate how useful this recorder collection is and your recorder students will really enjoy all of the fun songs. The downloadable version gives you the same pages and recordings as the print version, but in the form of PDFs and MP3s. The CONVENIENCE COMBO KIT includes both the printed Handbook and CD, as well as the downloadable files. In print and downloadable by August 31, 2011 BY-116 PERFORMANCE KIT with CD...... 24.95

1 New Recorder Collections
John Riggios exciting new Christmas collection for beginning recorder!
DREAMING OF A BAG CHRISTMAS A Collection For Beginning Recorders by John Riggio Through the years, John Riggio has acquired a special reputation for creating fresh, distinctive arrangements for recorder in MUSIC K-8, in RECORDER CLASSROOM, and in the many special collections we have published. More important, though, is the fact that his arrangements stay creative even when he is writing them for beginning players. He has a unique way of crafting the song to sound great even while the players are just using B, A, and G. Perhaps his best loved recorder settings are of Christmas music. In this, his fourth collection of Christmas songs for recorder, he is again taking favorite carols and putting them within the reach of your beginning players. This new collection features:
O Little Town Of Bethlehem Carol Of The Bells The Boars Head Carol Once In Royal Davids City Sussex Carol We Wish You A Merry Christmas
This kit is available in regular print form, and in electronic format for download. The CONVENIENCE COMBO KIT includes both the print Kit with CD and the Downloadable Kit. RHAPSODY ON A CIVIL WAR BALLAD
INTERMEZZO
SYMPHONIC PRELUDE ON A CHRISTMAS SPIRITUAL
VARIATIONS ON A TRAGIC BARNYARD AIR
arr. Paul Jennings That old American folk song, Go Tell Aunt Rhody is not exactly a happy tune, but we thought it would be a good tune to energize and to use in your recorder classes. It also struck us that it would be a good song for the study of the form theme and variations. Be sure to listen to our excellent recording and discuss what your students hear in each variation. Notes used: G, A, B, C, and D. (from RECORDER CLASSROOM Vol 1 No 3) Ready for download right now! SR-337 DOWNLOADABLE RECORDER SINGLE. 7.95 THE WATER IS WIDE arr. Paul Jennings This song has a long and wandering history that dates back as far as 1600. In our recorder arrangement, we have chosen a folk-style setting with a string orchestration behind it. Your students can warm up with the long, slow notes and strive for longer phrases and plenty of expression in this beautiful ballad. Notes used: low D, E, G, A, B, C. (from RECORDER CLASSROOM Vol 1 No 4) Ready for download right now! SR-347 DOWNLOADABLE RECORDER SINGLE.. 7.95 SECRET AGENT by Mike Wilson For the CIA operatives in your classroom, were offering Secret Agent. This high-energy piece, driven by drums, bass, guitars, and percussion, will help you keep the adrenaline up as your students become proficient playing the notes G, A, B, and C. (from RECORDER CLASSROOM Vol 1 No 2) Ready for download right now! SR-357 DOWNLOADABLE RECORDER SINGLE. 7.95
A RUSSIAN CHRISTMAS
by Paul Jennings We have combined two old Russian folk songs, Carol Of The Russian Children and Kaliada, to create a unique performance selection for your young players. We have arranged the work for two soprano recorders and one alto. However, it is very effective with just the easiest soprano part, which uses only the notes G and A. (from MUSIC K-8 Vol 21 No 2) Available by August 31, 2011 SR-717 DOWNLOADABLE RECORDER SINGLE. 7.95 ECHO CAROL arr. Paul Jennings This old carol, also known as While By My Sheep, is arranged for two soprano recorders and one optional alto recorder, but it can be played by just your beginning recorder students. The orchestral arrangement is full of contrasts which are fun for your students, too. Notes used: G, A, B, and C. (from RECORDER CLASSROOM Vol 1 No 2) Available by August 31, 2011 SR-737 DOWNLOADABLE RECORDER SINGLE. 7.95

RECORDER CLASSROOM
A unique magazine designed to bring recorders into a new era of media
Recorders are a special part of a well-rounded music education. They are wonderful instruments with a long and rich history, and they provide students with an ideal way to experience the joy of instrumental performance. Throughout the history of MUSIC K-8 magazine, we have tried to provide a wide variety of music, and through Plank Road Publishing we offer a number of other recorder resources. But we created our unique magazine to allow us to approach the material in a more dynamic fashion. So far, we have created two volumes of four issues each. Heres some of what you will find in each of them: Lots of Great Music & State-Of-The-Art Recordings! - As you would expect, we have included lots of music in a variety of styles from top composers and arrangers, including many of the writers you know from MUSIC K-8. (You can hear all of the carefully arranged music on the RecorderClassroom.com web site.) And the recordings are first class, with top musicians and the same excellence you have always gotten from Plank Road Publishing. Listen to the excerpts online and you will hear what we mean. With lots of variety. There have also been many types of recorder music including Orff arrangements by Norm Sands, exercises, warm-ups, technique builders, and lessons designed to encourage creativity. And we have kept the National Standards in mind to help you plan your lesson objectives. Recorders are such a great way for kids to experience music, we wanted to give you a large set of tools to help you share them. Our regular feature Recorder Method Energizer has presented intriguing new settings of tunes that are common to many methods, as well as techniques to enhance the learning experience. The requirements for your students have stayed the same, by and large, but the arrangements have helped you keep the students more interested, especially during early lessons. Surveys have told us that these are some of our most popular tunes. Special Contributors with Special Resources. We are especially excited about the regular column from master teacher Artie Almeida called Fun Foundations For Recorders. Her articles have that special flair that teachers have learned to love in her myriad of popular resources for music educators. Her articles begin with beliefs about the recorder as a teaching tool. Ask any current subscriber and they will tell you how much they gain from her thoughts, music, and activities. Just her pages in each issue are worth the price of the magazine! There are also articles and music by Norm Sands, humorous visits from Zippy Toad, and loads of amazing online resources that you wont find anywhere else.

BAG WARM-UPS & WORKOUTS FOR YOUNG PLAYERS
Building Strong Performers Bunches Of Ways by John Riggio and Paul Jennings The first lessons with students beginning to play the recorder can be trying. These can be times of frustration, boredom, and occasionally pandemonium. Thats why John Riggio and Paul Jennings produced this unique teaching resource. Drawing on their many years as writers and educators, they have created a collection of short, interesting warm-ups and technique builders that will make the journey through the first three notes used in most methods an enjoyable, rewarding one. Each warm-up and workout zeroes in on one note or concept, and comes with an exciting, contemporary recorded accompaniment that will make your students want to play them over and over as they learn. Each note gets a workout as do the various note combinations in a logical progression. Other workouts deal with additional important concepts for beginning players: breath control, tone production, and simple articulation. Included in this great resource are these new selections: Fright Of The Blunder B Planet Of The A B A Robot Blue Cloud Ener G Hee Bee G B Merrrillly We Rock Along Mexican Jumping Bean BAG BAGolithic Breakdown The Long And Short Of It (B) (A) (BA) (G) (GB) (BAG) (BAG) (BAG) (BAG)
These clever tunes help you reinforce the concepts you are teaching, adding spice and motivation for your first lessons with players who are learning to play a wind instrument for the first time. Each warm-up and workout comes with a reproducible part for your students and with special teaching notes on the concepts involved. BA-216 KIT with CD...... 24.95

These eight songs will give you tools for spicing up each step of the way, including cool new originals that feature first just B, then B and A. To avoid magnetic interference, do not position the front speakers too close to your TV. Allow adequate ventilation around the DVD receiver and subwoofer. Bass sounds produced by the subwoofer may be heard differently depending on the listening position and subwoofer location. To enjoy desired sounds, try to change the location of the subwoofer according to the listening position.

Placing the speakers
Placing the center speaker (NX-C300)
When placing the center speaker on the top of the TV, use the supplied fasteners to secure the speaker.
Attaching to a wall
You can attach the speakers to a wall using commercially available screws (Diameter: 3.5 to 4 mm (1/8 to 5/32), Length: 25 mm (1) or more). Each speaker requires two screws.
Screws (3.5 (1/8) to 4 (5/32) mm dia., commercially available)
PREPARATION
Fastener
20 mm (25/32) or more
5 mm (1/5)
Peel off the seal
79 mm (2-3/4) 151 mm (5-15/16)
1 Peel off the seals on one side of the fasteners and attach them to the bottom of the center speaker.
2 Peel off the seals on the other side of the fasteners and attach them to the top of the TV. Notes
Do not place the speaker on the TV if the top of the TV is uneven or narrower than the bottom surface of the speaker. Doing so may cause the speaker to fall. In this case, place the speaker inside a TV rack or on a level floor. Before attaching the fasteners to the TV, clean the surface with a dry cloth. A dirty or wet surface may weaken the adhesive force and cause the speaker to fall. Do not touch the bonding surfaces of the fasteners after peeling off the seals. Doing so may weaken the adhesive force and cause the speaker to fall.
1 Install two screws in the wall where you want to place the speaker. 2 Hang the speaker on the screws using the holes in the rear of the speaker. Notes
To attach a speaker to a wall using screws, the wall must be firm. Do not attach a speaker to a wall that is made of weak materials such as plaster or veneered woods. Doing so may cause the speaker to fall. After attaching each speaker, check that the speaker is fixed securely. YAMAHA will bear no responsibility for any accidents caused by improper installations.
Hanging on a wall (NX-F300, NX-S300)
You can hang the speakers on a wall using a commercially available bracket and screws (Diameter: 6 mm). Attach a bracket firmly to the rear of the speakers using screws. Then mount a screw on the wall where the speaker is to be hung and hook the speaker securely onto the mounted screws. Note
Before starting operation, press AUX repeatedly to select AUX FRONT to activate the input source.

Connecting the FM/AM antennas
TV IN AUX IN LINE OUT
Ground (GND terminal) For minimum interference, connect the antenna GND terminal to a good earth ground. A good earth ground is a metal stake driven into moist earth.
1 Connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM ANT terminal. Place the AM loop antenna on a shelf or attach it to a stand or wall. 2 Connect the supplied FM wire antenna to the FM ANT terminal. Extend the FM wire antenna and fix its ends to the wall. Notes
Adjust the position of the antennas for optimal reception. Place the antennas as far as possible from your TV, VCR or other sources of radiation to prevent unwanted interference. The AM loop antenna should be placed away from this DVD receiver. A properly installed outdoor antenna provides clearer reception than an indoor one. If you experience poor reception quality, an outdoor antenna may improve the quality. Consult the nearest authorized YAMAHA dealer or service center about outdoor antennas.
