14.1 Megapixel Sensor A 14.1 Megapixel 1/2.3 type CCD sensor provides high resolution image capture and allows the printing of very large shots (A2+). It also means that an image can be cropped to achieve the desired composition, allowing users to capture their subject in crisp detail. 24mm ultra wide-angle, 35x optical zoom lens Drawing on more than 70 years of optical engineering expertise, this genuine Canon lens features an extensive 35x optical zoom the largest on any Canon digital compact camera providing a versatile zoom range for users to exploit when taking their shots. From wide-angle landscapes to indoor shots and long-range close ups, the focal range extends from an ultra-wide 24mm to an impressive 840mm (35mm equivalent), providing users with the flexibility to shoot a wide variety of subjects quickly, easily and in high quality. Featuring the same technologies and processes developed for Canons professional range of EF lenses, this lens integrates both Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements and Hi-UD elements also found in Canons professional broadcast lenses, to reduce chromatic aberration whilst maintaining a lightweight design. Zoom Framing Assist When shooting at the telephoto end of the 35x zoom, it is possible to lose track of a small or distant moving subject. The PowerShot SX30 IS features Zoom Framing Assist in both movie and still image shooting, making it easier for photographers to reacquire the subject with minimal disruption. If a subject is lost, photographers can push the dedicated Zoom Framing Assist button, which instantly zooms out to one of three preset levels established by the photographer, with the original frame marked by a rectangle. Once the subject has been re-framed in the rectangle, the original frame can be resumed instantly by releasing the button. Optical Image Stabilizer (4.5-stops) The PowerShot SX30 IS features Canons most effective optical Image Stabilizer technology in a compact digital camera, preventing image blur by dramatically
reducing the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops. In situations where image blur due to camera shake is more likely such as in darker conditions or when shooting with the zoom fully extended the optical Image Stabilizer can help images remain sharp through minute vibration gyros which detect camera movement caused by hand shake. These signals are processed by a single-chip IS controller, which discriminates between hand shake and intentional camera movements. Signals are then sent to the IS unit, which moves one of the lens elements (lens-shift system) accordingly to re-align the light rays and cancel out the effects of camera shake.
PureColor II VA LCD screen
The 6.8cm (2.7) vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD provides excellent visibility to aid the capture and playback of images and video. This 4:3 aspect ratio screen features 230k dot resolution and, thanks to its PureColor II design, displays images with brilliant colour rendition and high contrast. The screen can be flipped out and rotated making it possible to shoot from awkward angles for close-up shots or behind crowds. A Quick-bright function instantly maximises the brightness of the screen, making it easier to see in conditions like bright sunlight. DIGIC 4 Processor Canons DIGIC 4 (Digital Imaging Core) processor manages all of the cameras primary functions to optimise operating efficiency. Advanced image processing algorithms deliver superb image detail and colour reproduction with accurate white balance and minimal noise. High-speed processing results in outstanding responsiveness and rapid auto focus. 720p HD Video with Stereo Sound The PowerShot SX30 IS supports 1280x720p HD video with stereo sound, allowing users to immediately switch from photos to high-quality video and back at the touch of a dedicated Movie Record button. An ultrasonic zoom motor (USM) allows users to zoom silently whilst recording, and continuous autofocus ensures that subjects remain sharp. HD movies are recorded with the advanced H.264 codec, providing high compression without compromise on quality. A mini HDMI socket also allows users to share high quality stills and movies with friends and family by connecting the camera to an HDMI compatible HD television.

Dynamic Image Stabilizer Originally designed for Canons camcorder range, Dynamic IS mode uses the optical Image Stabilizer to counteract the effects of camera-shake caused by the photographers movement. This feature allows active users to achieve smoother footage, whether walking, climbing or just trying to follow the action. Smart Auto with Scene Detection Technology Smart Auto mode uses Scene Detection Technology to determine the shooting scene by analysing subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue. The camera then selects a scene type from 28 variables and applies the best settings for optimum output. In Smart Auto mode, a colour icon indicating the type of scene detected and the lighting conditions of the scene is shown on the LCD monitor. Smart Auto is also available in Movie mode, with support for 21 different shooting scenes. Smart Flash Exposure Smart Flash Exposure intelligently controls the power and usage of the onboard flash to ensure natural results in a variety of conditions. By using focusing distance as well as shooting scene information, an optimum balance between the ambient light of the scene and flash power is achieved. When shooting in very bright conditions, shadows which can appear on a subjects face are detected by the camera and flash can be used to eliminate them. When shooting at close distances, overexposure is avoided by sensing how reflective the subject is, as well as by reducing the flash power to compensate for the close shooting distance. Servo AF/AE When a subject is moving towards or away from the camera and the shutter is halfpressed, Servo AF/AE will track it continuously adjusting focus and exposure settings to ensure that the subject remains sharp and well-exposed when the shutter is finally pressed. Smart Shutter with Face Detection Technology Smart Shutter mode uses Face Detection Technology to allow users to take both group shots and self-portraits easily and in a more relaxed way. The shutter can be triggered remotely in three different ways: Smile Detection: Triggers the shutter when the camera detects a smiling face within the frame
Wink Self-Timer: Triggers the shutter two seconds after the subject in the frame has winked, removing the need for a remote control FaceSelf-Timer: Allows perfect group shots or self portraits by automatically triggering the shutter two seconds after a new face has entered the frame Creative Modes The PowerShot SX30 IS includes a range of creative modes to add a new dimension to photos without requiring additional post-production. Miniature Effect is available in both movie and still image capture, mimicking the effects of a tilt-shift lens to give subjects a model-like profile. Fish-eye Effect replicates the effect of a fish-eye lens with three different levels of distortion (weak, medium and strong), adding a new perspective to portrait and landscape shots. Super Vivid boosts colour saturation, while Poster Effect creates a more retro feel to images, allowing users to make their photos really stand out from the crowd. SDXC card support The PowerShot SX30 IS supports the latest SDXC memory cards, providing compatibility with removable storage media up to 2TB in size. With SDXC memory cards, more content can be stored on a single card than ever before, and movies and images can be shot repeatedly without having to change cards. Eye-Fi connected functions For users who want to transfer content wirelessly, the PowerShot SX30 IS includes EyeFi connected functions. The PowerShot SX30 IS features a dedicated Eye-Fi section in the User Interface, on-screen icons, and it disables the automatic power-down function when an Eye-Fi card is detected - allowing users to transfer content easily and without interruption1. Accessories Compatible Canon Speedlite EX flash units can be attached on the hot shoe adaptor providing additional illumination for various subjects. An optional lens filter adapter ring is also available for the PowerShot SX30 IS, which permits 67mm lens filters from Canons EOS range, such as the Canon Circular Polarizing filter PL-C B 67mm, to be fitted for improved or more creative results. This adapter is also compatible with the PowerShot SX1 IS, the PowerShot SX10 IS and the PowerShot SX20 IS.
