| The last straw was that drivers seat heater that failed. After spending nearly $10,000 in repairs over 5 years ownership, I was just sick. The quality of the BMW 740i is total; engine, body, interior, transmission, breaks, suspension, steering, comfort, safety, control, style. | |

Introduction
exercise-4-life
The Silva Exercise-4-life concept is developed to: Help people improve their health and to measure their performance. The concept includes products, knowledge and know-how about exercise and physical health. The concept includes the simple pedometers that are placed on the hip, as well as pedometers with added functionality, wrist pedometers, poles, stopwatches etc.
EVERYDAY EXERCISE We move too little! Sedentary jobs, car travel and accessible public transport are helping to create new lifestyle diseases. The solution is called everyday exercise. Use your legs as transportation and you will avoid excess weight, joint problems as well as live a longer and healthier life. With 10.000 steps per day, everyone can lay the foundation of continued training and healthy life. Obesity, back problems, shoulder pain, head ache, depression etc are typical problems related to lack of exercise. Still, even for active persons everyday exercise makes good. No matter who you are or at what physical level, Silva hope to inspire you to get out there and nd that everyday exercise can be both enjoyable and fun. Remember: Every step counts. PEDOMETERS, STEP COUNTERS AND EXERCISE MONITORS There are several products to refer to as pedometers. Pedometers, step counters or exercise monitors can be worn and used in many ways: - Regular pedometers are worn on the hip and count every step by registering the movement of the hip. A very simple and convenient way to keep track of your exercise. - Pedometers worn on the wrist are referred to as exercise monitors. The unit will measure the arms movement which is equivalent to number of steps taken and is remarkably accurate. For everyday use the wrist pedometer can have a tendency to count to many steps despite they are equipped with a lter function to prevent registration of false steps. This is because the arms are frequently moved even during a day at work. - Pole exercise monitors are devises that works together with a walking or trekking pole. Either the monitor is built into the handle or it is attached to the pole. The pole exercise monitor registers pole movements and translates this into steps, distance and calories. MEASURING STEPS There are mainly three techniques to measure steps: Mechanical pendulum, Piezo electronic sensor and accelerometer sensors: - The Pendulum technology is a simple but very reliable and well proven way to get accurate measuring. The pendulum construction has to be carefully balanced in order to give accurate readings. A step is registered when the pendulum swings by the body movement and makes contact with a connector.
The Pendulum
- The Piezo sensor is a digital sensor that registers movements. These movements are interpreted by the electronics and displayed as steps. Piezo sensors are slightly more energy consuming than the pendulum sensor.
ADDITIONAL DATA Pedometers are mainly designed to count steps. If functions as stride length and a timer are added you can get more data from the pedometer. Stride length and steps gives travelled distance. Travelled distance during a certain time will give speed. Steps and time will give step frequency. Adding body weight the pedometer can also do an estimation of how many calories you consume. NORDIC WALKING, POLE WALKING OR TREKKING Nordic walking and pole walking is a form of exercise which has become popular among both the young and old. It is a fun and effective form of exercise. In comparison to ordinary walking, it increases the amount of calories burned by about 20 percent, provided that the poles are used actively and the muscles in the upper body are active
Piezo sensors
The Piezo sensor
- The accelerometer is a small sensor that is widely used to measure acceleration. It is for example used in laptop computers to protect the hard drive in case you drop it to the oor. Accelerometers can be used in pedometers to measure both steps and movement very accurately but are more expensive and technical that both pendulum and peizo sensors.
Trekking is another activity where poles are very helpful. Trekking is a common way of walking in into the backcountry. The poles will give extra support and make you more stable when trekking in tricky terrain. NORDIC WALKING TECHNIQUE 1. Hold the pole with a fairly relaxed grip. 2. Your arms should swing naturally along your sides, with your elbows slightly bent. Allow your arms to stretch out behind your back. 3. Make sure that you walk using opposing arms and legs, i.e. your left arm and right leg should move forward at the same time. 4. Place the pole next to the heel of your front foot and point the pole slightly backwards. 5. Take good strides and use the poles actively so that the muscles in your upper body have to work to push your body forwards. Avoid supporting yourself too heavily on the poles. 6. Hold up your upper body and make sure your back has a neutral posture. 7 In order to create a more natural rotation along your. spine you can imagine that you have a long pillar along it. As you walk, try to create movement in the form of small rotations around the pillar. POLE LENGTH It is important to select or adjust poles to match body height. You can work out the right pole length for you if you stand up and hold your upper arm close to your side. Bend your elbow 90 degrees you should be able to grasp the poles grip. For higher intensity training use poles 5 cm longer than normal and to ease the stress on neck and shoulder use poles 5 cm shorter than normal. Another way of nding the correct pole length is to use a pole that is 66% of the body height.

Introduction Compasses
Ever since Mr Gunnar Tillander invented the rst SILVA 1-2-3 SYSTEM compass in 1928, SILVA has been the standard in accurate and user-friendly personal navigation all over the world!
Trusted by expeditions, defence forces, boy scouts, professional users, leisure navigators and many others in the toughest of conditions we are proud to say that we know what it takes out there. This knowledge has been transformed into the technical construction of the products so that also future adventurers know who to trust! FACTS AND OTHER What is a compass? A compass is a navigational instrument for nding directions MAGNETISM The Earth Magnetic Field All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron lings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron lings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic eld lines. To simplify life we can think of Earth having a big bar magnet mounted in its centre. The magnetic eld created by a bar magnet is very similar to the Earth Magnetic Field. All magnetic objects (including a magnetised compass needle) is constantly trying to align themselves parallel with the magnetic eld lines and will therefore try to point towards North.
Two North poles There are two North Poles on Earth - both located in the Arctic region - a Geographic North Pole and a Magnetic North Pole. Geographic North Pole The northernmost point on the earths surface is the geographic North Pole, also known as true north. Its located at 90 North latitude and all lines of longitude converge at the pole. Magnetic North Pole Located hundred of miles south of the geographic North Pole lies the magnetic North Pole at approximately 82.7 North and 114.4 West (2005). However, this location is not xed and is continuously moving. The Magnetic North Pole is the focus of the planets magnetic eld and is the point that traditional magnetic compasses point toward.
2. Rotate the compass housing until N on the dial points North on the map. Check that the compass housing red/ black north/south lines are parallel with the maps meridians.
3. Hold the compass in your hand and turn yourself until the red end of the compass needle (North) coincides with the red arrow in the bottom of the compass housing. The front of the compass with the direction of travel arrow is now pointing towards your destination.
USING A COMPASS Using the SILVA 1-2-3 SYSTEM to take bearing from the map. The world famous SILVA 1-2-3 SYSTEM has been used by navigators since the early 1930s and is still the
NB! If using a mirror-sighting compass angle the mirror/lid approx. 45 degrees towards yourself and hold it with straight-arm in front of you. Now, at the same time looking in the mirror to see that the compass needle aligns with the red/black N/S arrow, sight above the mirror (using the sight) towards an object in the eld in line with the direction of travel.

Introduction Optics
A pair of binoculars is the perfect companion in the outdoors whether it is about bird watching, hunting or when watching your favourite athlete in track and eld. There are a number of important facts that a binocular customer should be aware of to be able to buy the perfect pair for the designated use.
Types of Binoculars There are two main types of binoculars Roof prism and Porro prism Roof Roof prism models are generally smaller in size than porro style binoculars and are typied by straight barrels. Roof prism models are lighter weight than porro prism binoculars yet maintain excellent image quality. Porro Porro prism models are a more traditional style binocular. Porro prism binoculars are easily identied by the shape of the barrels, which have the objective lens offset from the ocular lens. BINOCULAR SIZE Compact Compact binoculars offer the advantages of being smaller and lighter. They are perfect for those who are generally on foot for long periods of time and need to trim weight from their load. They usually t into pockets for easy accessibility and are quick to use. However, they offer limited light transmission and steadiness in the larger powers. Usually, objective lenses in these compacts are in the 20-30mm range. Mid Size Mid size is a type of binocular that offers mix of good light transmission and steadiness, but is also easy to handle and fairly lightweight. These binoculars are good for all-
round use in most conditions. Objective sizes in Mid Size binoculars typically range from 30-40mm. Full Size Full Size binoculars are the best for gathering light because of their larger objective lenses, which are usually over 40mm. They also offer broader elds of view and are easier to steady. The trade off is often in the size and weight. Larger and heavier, they are ideal for those who dont mind carrying a little extra to get a better view. Magnication, Objective Size & Field Of View Numbers: Power and Objective Size Optics are described by two numbers separated by an X. The rst number is the magnication (8X) or how many times larger an object will appear when viewed through the binocular. An 8X, or 8 power, binocular will make an object appear eight times closer that the same object viewed with the naked eye. The last number is the diameter of the objective lens in millimetres (X40). The objective lens is the lens nearest the object being viewed. When choosing a binocular, magnication is critical. Lower magnication binoculars, 8X or less, allow for excellent light gathering, wider eld of view and extremely steady images. Higher magnication binoculars, 10X or higher, bring objects much closer, but sacrice some of the other features found in low magnication pairs.
