DVD/amp system

Sony AVD-S10
Sonys super-stylish new DVD player/receiver combi promises home cinema heaven in a box. Just add speakers.
uilding a home cinema system should be an uncomplicated process that doesnt have to mean stacks of separate components clogging up your living room. We all have different requirements when it comes to home cinema and, fortunately, there are plenty of components out there aimed at our needs, offering straightforward solutions with the minimum of fuss. So, if youre after a home cinema setup with the functionality of a one-box packaged system, but want the flexibility of selecting your own surround sound speaker system, then the Sony AVD-S10 is for you. Sony has always had an eye for futuristic and stylish-looking products and the AVD-S10 fits the bill perfectly. Its a neat one-box home cinema system that combines a DVD player with a surround sound receiver/amplifier. Simply add a set of surround sound speakers and you have a complete home cinema system. Its slimline front panel is no bigger than a regular-sized separate DVD player and theres

little on the front panel to identify it as the home cinema powerhouse that it is. The only thing that gives the game away is that it is slightly deeper than most DVD players, housing the built-in amplification, but will easily nestle under the TV without looking out of place.

Tomb with a view

Pictures have the kind of depth that brings out subtle details and you can almost make out the hieroglyphics on the dusty walls of the newly discovered tomb

Most illuminating

The front panel contains basic function buttons only and the AVD-S10 has Sonys usual high-quality build and feel; even the largish volume control (for the size of the unit) has a smooth operation and the disc-loading draw glides very effortlessly into action. The remote control has been given a style makeover, too. Its overpopulated with buttons but is slim and silver, and the basic controls are illuminated so that they can be seen in the dark. Onscreen menus are fairly comprehensive and setting the parameters for your specific type of TV and speaker system is a relatively fuss-free process. There are two Scart outputs at the back for hooking up your TV and VCR, but there is no S-video connection whatsoever. To get the best picture quality from the AVD-S10, your TV must be equipped to handle RGB picture signals or youll simply get the relatively poorer quality composite video signal.

Recommended Speakers Another noticeable omission is the lack of Dolby Pro-Logic II (DPL II) surround processing, and may be a bit of disappointment for anyone who wants a system with all the latest gadgets. Despite the lack of DPL II, it does incorporate SACD (Super Audio CD) playback. Sony is a key developer of the format and its inclusion in the AVD-S10 will appeal to anyone who is serious about music with better-than-CD sound quality. The Sony may not look much like a powerful home cinema system, but, as the saying goes, looks can be misleading. Its performance lives up to the companys much-respected reputation and delivers the kind of picture and sound quality you would expect from a larger unit costing considerably more.

Ultimately, this DVD/amp system is one product short of a one-box solution the speakers. Sonys very own Pascals will really look the part, and sound great, too

Linn Classik system
Tested last issue, the Linn Classik is sold on the same principles as this Sony just add speakers. However, its four times as expensive and is also available with Linns own speaker package
Onscreen pictures have the kind of depth that brings out the subtle details of the Egyptian pyramids in The Mummy Returns, and you can almost make out the hieroglyphics on the dusty walls of the newly discovered tomb. Colours are excellent and are as rich as the Egyptian pharaohs palace but with a hint of murkiness in darker areas of the picture. Surround sound performance is also of a high standard but not without some minor compromises. The compact unit manages to power five speakers with relative ease and can easily fill a large room with sound, despite its
compact size. Surround effects are well placed around the room but tend to become hard-edged and trebly as the intensity of the onscreen action increases, particularly when the pyramid starts to come crashing down around your ears. However, this kind of detailed characteristic is particularly good for focusing dialogue and manages to bring onscreen voices to the fore with a crisp, clean detail. With music, the Sony is no slouch either and is, once again, crisp and supremely detailed. Groove Armadas Vertigo album has plenty of rhythm and drive, but its detail can be a bit forced and clinical-sounding at times. The Sony AVD-S10 may be missing out on a couple of niceties, like Dolby Pro-Logic II and S-video picture output, but it makes for a flexible home cinema system. Its functionality, picture and sound performance live up to expectations of the big brand name and makes a truly great buy for anyone wanting to take their first steps into the exciting world of DVD and surround sound. Simply add speakers. Further Info

Good Points

Simplistic DVD/receiver combi that has good picture and sound performance and comes from a trusted brand name

Bad Points

Lacks some key features for anyone looking for the most up-to-date system. Detailed sound can be difficult to tame; choose speakers wisely

Overall

A clever package for those who want an almost-separates solution or those who already own their own speakers. Not the most highly-specified solution available, though

C:13:00

Glossary
Bit rate Value indicating the amount of video data compressed in a DVD per second. The unit is Mbps (Mega bit per second). 1 Mbps indicates that the data per second is 1,000,000 bits. The higher the bit rate is, the larger the amount of data. However, this does not always mean that you can get higher quality pictures. Chapter Sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number enabling you to locate the chapter you want. Digital Cinema Sound (DCS) This is the generic name of the surround sound produced by digital signal processing technology developed by Sony. Unlike previous surround sound fields mainly directed at the reproduction of music, Digital Cinema Sound is designed specifically for the enjoyment of movies. Dolby Digital This sound format for movie theaters is more advanced than Dolby Pro Logic Surround. In this format, the rear speakers output stereo sound with an expanded frequency range and a subwoofer channel for deep bass is independently provided. This format is also called 5.1 because the subwoofer channel is counted as 0.1 channel (since it functions only when a deep bass effect is needed). All six channels in this format are recorded separately to realize superior channel separation. Furthermore, since all the signals are processed digitally, less signal degradation occurs.

The disc is dirty. , Clean the disc with a soft cloth (page 8). The disc is not inserted correctly. , Re-insert the disc correctly. To prevent a malfunction, the receiver has performed the self-diagnosis function. , Contact your nearest Sony dealer or local authorized Sony service facility and give the 5-character service number. Example: E 61 10
Dolby Pro Logic Surround As one method of decoding Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic Surround produces four channels from two-channel sound. Compared with the former Dolby Surround system, Dolby Pro Logic Surround reproduces left-to-right panning more naturally and localizes sounds more precisely. To take full advantage of Dolby Pro Logic Surround, you should have one pair of rear speakers and a centre speaker. The rear speakers output monaural sound. DTS Digital audio compression technology that the Digital Theater Systems, Inc. developed. This technology conforms to 5.1-channel surround. The rear channel is stereo and there is discrete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio. The good channel separation is realized because all the channel data is recorded discrete and processed in digital. DVD A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictures even though its diameter is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single-layer and single-sided DVD, at 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), is 7 times that of a CD. Furthermore, the data capacity of a dual-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and doublesided DVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer and double-sided DVD 17 GB. The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of digital compression technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 of its original size. The DVD also uses the variable rate coding technology that changes the data to be allocated according to the status of the picture.
