Weybridge, 12th October 2006
October 2006 - SONY announces the launch of the CDX-GT410U, the first Sony in-car audio system to offer direct plug and play capability for USB portable audio devices. This is one of a new generation of advanced Sony car audio systems, giving music lovers the option to listen to music in a number of ways whilst in the car, whether its on the radio, on CD, or stored on a digital music player. These days most people store their main music library on a PC, however the music they actually listen to day-to-day is stored on some kind of digital music player which can be difficult when trying to listen to your favourite tunes in the car, says Patrick Butler, Sony Europes Audio Marketing Director. Headphones are not an option for safety reasons, but many people find connecting their MP3 player into the cars stereo problematic. Sony offers new solutions enabling customers to Release their Music. One solution is Bluetooth, which we offer on our recently released high end car audio unit. Bluetooth is great for users of WALKMAN type music mobile phones whilst for other customers the cost effectiveness, simplicity and wide compatibility of USB is simply perfect, Patrick Butler said. Sony pioneered the launch of affordable, easy-to-use MP3 players featuring direct USB connection via a USB plug built into the WALKMAN itself. The Beans WALKMAN series, the hit model last Christmas has been succeeded by the Eseries which launched in summer 2006. Now other manufacturers have followed suit and also offer MP3 players with a USB built in.
Stored digital music can be played by simply connecting the WALKMAN or other compatible digital music player directly to the Sony CDX-GT410U car audio system via a USB port which is located on the front display. USB is affordable and simple but it offers genuine user benefits. For a start its digital, giving much better quality than other in-car adaptors. You get the ID3 Tag information, so you see all the track and album names from the WALKMAN of your car audio display. Because it carries control information you use the car units buttons or remote to control the music: no fiddling with the buttons on the WALKMAN itself. Last but not least, you can charge the WALKMAN at the same time, says Patrick Butler. As well as the USB feature, it offers great performance as a CD radio as it is based on Sonys renowned, highly stable Drive-S Chassis with a powerful 4 x 50watts output and a subwoofer switch. For added safety and ease of use it comes with a remote control which is smaller than a credit card and a clear 13 segment fluorescent display. The button/key illumination can also be switched from red to green depending on the users taste. The Sony CDX-GT410U is compatible with most commonly used digital music formats including MP3, ATRAC, WMA and AAC files. It will be available from November 2006. Similar USB connection is available too on two new home micro hifi systems, the CMTU1 and the CMTU1BT (a step up version which has Bluetooth connectivity as well as USB). Like the CDX-GT410U the USB micro systems are ultra-flexible. You can plug in the latest USB-equipped E-series WALKMANS for playback and charging. But there are a host of other USB devices you can connect up including competitors USB MP3 players, PCs and of course the widely used USB memory storage sticks such as the Sony Microvault.
Butler sums up the CDX-GT410U USB Car Audio system as: A very affordable model aimed at the mainstream consumer and destined to be one of the best sellers on the market this Christmas. To demonstrate the benefits of USB, selected dealers will offer this unit bundled with a reduced price E-series Network WALKMAN and ten free track downloads from the Sony Connect online music store. Customers who buy one of those promotional packages will be fully geared up to release digital music on the move or in the car. The CDXGT410U special package with WALKMAN and free downloads is available at selected electronics dealers and online at from November 2006. ENDS
