iPod Connection
Direct connection of an iPOD is now possible with a supplied cable to the new CDXGT50UI head unit. This connection is located on the rear of the unit for seamless integration. While connected you can navigate track, album and artist name. This process is even easier with all the information on the head units display. Further more you can display track number and elapsed playing time. You dont need to worry about poor battery life because as long as the car is running or the ignition switch is set to ACC, the iPOD will also be charging. Sonys key objective is to deliver the best possible starting point for a great performing sound system. Thats why Sony continues with the DRIVE-S chassis in its 2007 CD head-unit range. DRIVE-S fuses a slim, robust mechanism and efficient electronic circuitry to deliver the best sound quality and durability from CD head-units. The result is greater shock protection, rapid response, and superior audio processing for an uninterrupted sonic experience.

Front Auxiliary Input

Sony has made it easier than ever to connect almost any portable audio device to your car system. One little cable is all it takes and you can listen to your Walkman, iPod, portable music player or portable DVD players through your Sony Xplod system. No need to mess around with FM modulators to listen to your MP3 player in the car. The auxiliary input is built right in to the face of the head unit. All you need to do is plug-n-play with the provided cable.
Responsive Laser Optical Pick-Up
The lightweight design of the DRIVE-S laser optical pick-up ensures greater efficiency, rapid response and accurate reading of music tracks from CDs providing further protection against skipping.
An underpowered amplifier can often result in distortion, which not only degrades audio quality but is the main contributor to blown speakers. In order to overcome this problem, every DRIVES head-unit features a high-powered S-MOSFET amplifier, capable of delivering a combined power of up to 208 Watts (max).

Slim-Design Mechanism

Only 24mm in height, the slim design of the DRIVE-S mechanism is much more responsive and energy efficient compared to conventional mechanisms. The result is a reduction in heat that significantly enhances durability, reliability, and performance from every CD head unit.

24BIT Digital to Analogue Converter
Selected Sony head-units feature a 24BIT Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC). The 24BIT conversion process ensures that music is accurately reproduced the way it was intended to be heard. Music tones will sound more natural and vibrant, providing an enriched listening experience.

Sony is committed to making it as easy as possible to enjoy your favourite music, no matter where you are or what youre doing. Thats why several models in the 2007 Xplod line up feature a direct USB input conveniently located on the front panel. This allows you to playback MP3 or WMA* files you may have on a typical USB storage device through your head unit. Sony supports most brands of MSC (Mass Storage Class) products but of course, offers even greater connectivity for Sony Walkman users. Simply plug in a compatible Walkman (e.g. NWE005FV) and playback your favourite songs complete with track info via your car entertainment system. It even charges your Walkman at the same time!

Drive-S Mechanism
Unlike conventional MOSFETs, S-MOSFET features a unique technology called SOI (silicon on insulator) and its primary function is to reduce interference that normally occurs between audio channels. In doing so, SOI ensures that the music signal is as clean as possible before it reaches your speakers for maximum sound quality.
High-Capacity Audio Capacitors
Front USB Conventional Mechanism
The DRIVE-S circuitry incorporates high-capacity audio capacitors. Audio capacitors interconnect audio stages to minimise signal distortion and enhance the overall frequency response.

The Stream series is Sonys premium range of car entertainment amplifiers. Each amplifier incorporates these key features.

Bluetooth

Bluetooths popularity is increasing with over 500 million Bluetooth devices sold in 2006. Sony has now included the technology into its Xplod series enabling convenient hands-free chatting via your mobile phone or even wireless music streaming (using the A2DP profile see page 40) Sony offers the ability to place and receive calls right from your car stereo. When you make or receive a call, it has a built-in microphone and mutes the music while channeling the phone conversation through one of the vehicles speakers.
Large Toroidal Power Transformer and Choke Coils
High-powered systems can often put a strain on an amplifiers power supply circuit. This is no problem for Sonys Stream amplifiers. Each Stream amplifier uses a large doublewound toroidal power transformer and choke coils to ensure stable operation. The heavy-duty double-wound construction ensures that they are capable of delivering high current when the system demands it. Each coil is isolated to supply power to different stages within the amplifier, resulting in greater stability and uninterrupted audio reproduction during peak current demands.

Aluminium Plate and On Board Heat Sink
Heat not only can affect stability, but also have an adverse effect on the long-term reliability of an amplifier. For this reason, each output transistor is mounted onto a specially constructed diecast aluminium heat sink. A layer of thermal compound grease is applied to each transistor before being secured in place with an aluminium plate. The diecast aluminium heat sink is designed with a large surface area to facilitate maximum heat dissipation.
Large Gauge, Gold-Plated Terminals
Large gauge terminals are featured on Stream amplifiers because of their low impedance characteristics and high electrical current handling capabilities. Each terminal is gold plated to eliminate oxidisation and enhance conductivity.

SPEAKERS HOP

Finding the perfect material for speaker cones is an ongoing quest in speaker design. Exclusive to Sonys speaker range are cones in a high-tech polymer called high oriented polyolefine, or HOP. What makes HOP remarkable is its ability to remain rigid and light. To properly perform its function, a speaker cone must balance three fundamental properties: (a) it must remain rigid throughout operation to avoid distortion caused by cone flex. (b) it must be well-damped, so it doesnt produce any sounds of its own, outside those sent to it from the amplifier for reproduction, and (c) it must be relatively light, so it can respond quickly enough to accurately reproduce sound waves and transients. Weight is particularly important when reproducing small, quick waveforms, such as mid-range and high frequencies. Unlike conventional materials such as polypropylene, the crystalline strands in HOP are aligned to an almost perfect parallel orientation. The parallel strands strengthen the cone surface to minimise any flexing. This breakthrough technology allows for many more benefits over conventional speaker cone materials, including superior overall efficiency, an ability to handle more power, greater bandwidth and smoother response.

Multiple MOSFETs

MOSFETs are the final output stage of the amplifier and are responsible for driving the speakers. Having multiple MOSFETs significantly increases current flow, which dramatically improves the power handling capabilities of the amplifier.

The marine range is the latest in mobile entertainment technology. The conditions on any boat can be harsh. Besides the obvious water threat, corrosion through sea salt and direct UV exposure are harmful to sensitive electronics. The Sony Marine range has been designed specifically for these harsh conditions. The CDXHR70MW CD head-unit features a water-resistant front panel that can handle severe splashing. You can fold up the front panel to seal out moisture completely, and the internal circuitry has also been treated with a protective coating. The speakers are often the most exposed in these environments, for this reason both the speakers and the sub have been designed to stand up to the harmful effects of direct UV rays, water and salt. This includes rust proof baskets and rubbercoated tinsel leads (the lead between the terminals and the speaker driver). If you prefer to mount your equipment in the protection of the cabin, you can use the optional wired remote control. It comes with an 18-foot (5.4m) cable. This allows for safe mounting of your equipment out of the elements while the remote weathers the storm. The remote has been extensively tested with UV, salt and is water resistant.
