APPENDIX ONE TRANSCRIPTION CONVENTIONS
The following transcription conventions are used in the data fragments presented in this thesis (following Atkinson & Heritage 1984).1

APPENDIX TWO DETAILS OF CORPORA
The following corpora comprise the data investigated in this thesis.
The Holt Corpus: this corpus was recorded in a family home in the 1980s and contains around 8 hours of naturally-occurring telephone talk-in-interaction, mostly between friends and family members. Most of the interactants are male and female BritishEnglish speakers and comprise a range of regional accents and ages (the ages range from between roughly between 13 to 80 years old).
The Heritage Corpus: this corpus was also recorded in a family home in the 1980s and contains around 2.5 hours of naturally occurring telephone talk-in-interaction. The male and female interactants have a variety of British-English regional accents and an array of ages spanning from between about 16 to 80. Most of the conversations are between friends and family members.
The Rahman Corpus: this corpus was recorded in a family home in the 1970s and is composed of around 1.5 hours of conversation. It comprises male and female interactants with a range of ages (from around roughly 8 to 60 years old) and accents. Again most of the calls are between friends and family members.
The NB Corpus: this corpus was recorded in the 1960s in a family home in America. It comprises around 2.5 hours of telephone talk-in-interaction between male and female
American-English speaking friends and family members. The interactants ages range from between 10 and 65.
The SBL Corpus: this corpus was recorded in the 1960s. The calls are between male and female American-English speakers and comprise around 2.5 hours.
The Pline Corpus: this corpus was recorded in June 2001 from a radio problem line phone-in programme which broadcast local to the York area, in North Yorkshire. The recordings comprise around 2 hours of naturally occurring telephone interactions and were made onto an audio tape using a Sony CFD-E55L audio tape recorder and then digitised using the software package SoundEdit 16. In each call there were three interactants: two radio presenters(/agony aunts) and a caller from the public. The conversationalists comprise males and females with a variety of accents, and ages ranging from around 30 to 60.

Tips Adjusting the volume or the audio emphasis (see page 28) will not affect the recording level. If the MW/LW program makes a whistling sound after you've pressed z in step 3, press PLAY MODE MONO/ST ISS (Interference Suppress switch) repeatedly until the noise is at a minimum. For the best results, use the AC power as a power source. To erase a recording, proceed as follows: 1 Insert the tape whose recording you want to erase. 2 Press X. 3 Press N. 4 Press z. 5 Press X.
