Notes on using your camera
Types of Memory Stick that can be used (not supplied)
The IC recording medium used by this camera is a Memory Stick Duo. There are two types of Memory Stick.
If you do not intend to use the battery pack for a long time, use up the existing charge and remove it from your camera, then store it in a cool, dry place. This is to maintain the battery pack functions. For details on the usable battery pack, see page 115.
Memory Stick Duo: you can use a Memory Stick Duo with your camera.

Carl Zeiss lens

This camera is equipped with a Carl Zeiss lens which is capable of reproducing sharp images with excellent contrast. The lens for this camera has been produced under a quality assurance system certified by Carl Zeiss in accordance with the quality standards of Carl Zeiss in Germany.
Memory Stick: you cannot use a Memory Stick with your camera.
Notes on the LCD screen and lens
The LCD screen is manufactured using extremely high-precision technology so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use. However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (white, red, blue or green in color) that constantly appear on the LCD screen. These points are normal in the manufacturing process and do not affect the recording in any way.
Other memory cards cannot be used.
For details on Memory Stick Duo, see page 113.
When using a Memory Stick Duo with Memory Stick compatible equipment
You can use the Memory Stick Duo by inserting it into the Memory Stick Duo Adaptor (not supplied).
Black, white, red, blue or green points

Notes on the battery pack
Charge the battery pack (supplied) before using the camera for the first time. The battery pack can be charged even if it is not completely discharged. Also, even if the battery pack is not fully charged, you can use the partially charged capacity of the battery pack as is.
Exposing the LCD screen or the lens to direct sunlight for long periods may cause malfunctions. Be careful when placing the camera near a window or outdoors. Do not press against the LCD screen. The screen may be discolored and that may cause a malfunction. Images may trail across on the LCD screen in a cold location. This is not a malfunction. Be careful not to bump the movable lens, and be careful not to apply force to it.
The pictures used in this Handbook
The photographs used as examples of pictures in this Handbook are reproduced images, and are not actual images shot using this camera.

Exposure Adjusting the light intensity
You can create various images by adjusting the exposure and the ISO sensitivity. Exposure is the amount of light that the camera will receive when you release the shutter.

Exposure:

Shutter speed = Length of time the camera receives light Aperture = Size of the opening allowing light to pass through ISO sensitivity (Recommended Exposure Index) = Recording sensitivity
Overexposure = too much light Whitish image Correct exposure
The exposure is automatically set to the proper value in the auto adjustment mode. However, you can adjust it manually using the functions below. Adjusting EV: Allows you to adjust the exposure determined by the camera (pages 19, 41). Metering Mode: Allows you to change the part of the subject to be measured to determine the exposure (page 42).
Underexposure = too little light Darker image
Adjusting ISO Sensitivity (Recommended Exposure Index)
ISO sensitivity is a speed rating for recording media that incorporates an image sensor that receives light. Even when the exposure is the same, images differ depending on the ISO sensitivity. To adjust the ISO sensitivity, see page 41.
High ISO sensitivity Records a bright image even when shooting in a dark location. However, the image tends to become noisy. Low ISO sensitivity Records a smoother image. However, when the exposure is insufficient, the image may become darker.
On the effects of lighting
The apparent color of the subject is affected by the lighting conditions.
Example: The color of an image affected by light sources
Weather/lighting Characteristics of light
Daylight White (standard)

Cloudy Bluish

Fluorescent Green-tinged

Incandescent Reddish

The color tones are adjusted automatically in the auto adjustment mode. However, you can adjust color tones manually with [White Bal] (page 45).
On image quality and image size
A digital image is made up of a collection of small dots called pixels. If it contains a large number of pixels, the picture becomes large, it takes up more memory, and the image is displayed in fine detail. Image size is shown by the number of pixels. Although you cannot see the differences on the screen of the camera, the fine detail and data processing time differ when the image is printed or displayed on a computer screen.

Indicators on the screen

On the battery pack

On charging the battery pack
We recommend charging the battery pack in an ambient temperature of between 10C to 30C (50F to 86F). You may not be able to efficiently charge the battery pack outside of this temperature range. The battery life varies according to how it is stored and the operating conditions and environment in which each battery pack is used.
Effective use of the battery pack
Battery performance decreases in low temperature surroundings. So, the time that the battery pack can be used is shorter in cold places. We recommend the following to ensure longer battery pack use: Put the battery pack in a pocket close to your body to warm it up, and insert it in your camera immediately before you start shooting. The battery pack will run out quickly if you use the flash or zoom frequently. We recommend having spare battery packs handy for two or three times the expected shooting time, and making trial shots before taking the actual shots. Do not expose the battery pack to water. The battery pack is not water-resistant. Do not leave the battery pack in extremely hot places, such as in a car or under direct sunlight.
How to store the battery pack
If the battery pack is not to be used for a long time, fully charge it and then fully use it up once a year on your camera before storing the battery pack in a dry, cool place. Repeat this charging and using up once a year to maintain the battery packs function. To use the battery pack up, leave your camera in slide show (page 48) playback mode until the power goes off. To prevent staining the terminal, shortcircuiting, etc., be sure to use a supplied battery case when carrying and storing.

On battery life

The battery life is limited. Battery capacity decreases little by little as you use it more and more, and as time passes. If the battery operating time seems shortened considerably, a probable cause is that the battery pack has reached the end of its life. Buy a new battery pack.

On the battery charger

Do not charge any other battery pack other than the NP-BG type battery packs in the battery charger supplied with your camera. Batteries other than the specified kind may leak, overheat, or explode if you attempt to charge them, posing a risk of injury from electrocution and burns. Remove the charged battery pack from the battery charger. If you leave the charged battery pack in the charger, battery life may be shortened. When the CHARGE lamp flashes, this may indicate a battery error or that a battery pack other than the specified type have been inserted. Check that the battery pack is the specified type. If the battery pack is the specified type, remove the battery pack, replace it with new one or another one and check if the battery charger operates correctly. DSC-WX1/B

Cyber-shot Digital Still Camera
Sonys Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 camera features Exmor R CMOS sensor and 24mm bright f/2.4 G lens, letting you capture clear, crisp images, even in low-light. High speed burst 10fps helps you capture the precise moment and Sweep Panorama creates ultra-wide 224degree panoramic shots. Additionally, it features 720p movie recording9, Ultra-quick 0.3-sec. AF, and Intelligent Auto mode 10.2 Megapixel Back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS Image Sensor The DSC-WX1 features a 10.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS image sensor that brings out the full resolving power of the cameras G lens to deliver extremely fast speed, high resolution, and stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain - 2x better than traditional sensors of equivalent size and pixel count. In addition, the combined Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ imaging processor delivers extremely fast 10fps, Anti Motion Blur, Hand-held Twilight and 720p movie modes. Premium 24mm f/2.4 G Lens Designed and manufactured to the highest standards of optical performance, the Sony G Lens is optimized to perfectly complement the advanced image sensors and image processing technology in Sonys cameras. G lenses are used in top of the line digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and advanced pro-sumer HD Camcorders. Capture the whole picture with 24mm wide angle lens Capture more of the scene in landscape or group portraits with the 24mm wide angle. Wide angle is especially useful in small rooms, where you cant get far enough back from your subjects to capture them all. 5x Optical Zoom Capture the action up close with the 5x optical zoom. Zoom in on kids on a soccer field or a jet skier on the lake, to see their expressions as they enjoy their sport. Ultra bright f/2.4 G Lens This f/2.4 aperture lens gathers twice as much light as typical compact camera lenses, allowing you to shoot indoors or in low light without flash and with less noise. 2.7" Clear Photo LCD Plus Compose and show off your images on the large 2.7 Clear Photo LCD Plus display (230K pixels) Compact design Measuring at just 3 9/16" x 2 1/16" x 25/32, the DSC-WX1 is compact enough to slip into most any pocket or purse, so you can take it with you wherever you go. BIONZ image processor The BIONZ image processor delivers the high resolution and fast performance you expect from a Sony digital camera. Fast processing enables Sweep Panorama to create the image in camera in seconds, clear images in low light settings, and layering one image over another to create a photo that looks just like what you see with your eyes. Sweep Panorama mode Reach beyond the traditional wide angle lens, and capture more breathtaking shots with Sweep Panorama Mode. Simply press the shutter button and sweep the camera in the desired direction and the camera continuously shoots at a high speed, then seamlessly stitches the images together with automatic position adjustment to create one stunning panoramic image. Available in wide and ultra-wide options, the camera can take panoramic shots of up to 256 degrees, which goes well beyond the limits of peripheral vision, even capturing areas somewhat behind you. Now capturing wide landscapes is as easy as press and sweep. High speed shooting The DSC-WX1 can capture ten full 10.2 megapixel resolution images at up to 10fps, helping to ensure that you capture the decisive moment such as the bat hitting the game winning homerun. In addition, the DSC-WX1 employs a mechanical shutter that helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects.
Handheld Twilight Capture cleaner and sharper night shots without using a tripod. When set to Handheld Twilight Mode, the DSC-WX1 captures six images in a fraction of a second with one press of the shutter, and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise. With these modes, ADDITIONAL FEATURES you can capture images in low light, HD Movie (720p)9 without flash, beyond the capability of traditional cameras. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization Anti Motion Blur mode Capture cleaner and sharper images, even when your subject is moving. When set in Anti Motion Blur mode, the DSC-WX1 captures six images in a fraction of a second with higher shutter speed and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and eliminate subject blur, beyond the capability of traditional cameras.
