This camera is expensive. But it is a proffesional bit of kit. This camera is being used all the time in the televsion industry. The Canon XL2 is the pro-sumer miniDV camcorder that is most often spotted on the sets of low budget and independent films.

The Professional Picture Quality You Demand

3CCD Camera System

The DSR-PD170 incorporates three 1/3-inch type CCDs, each with 380,000 pixels, and the DSR-PD170P incorporates three 1/3-inch type CCDs, each with 450,000 pixels. The 1/3-inch size CCDs contribute to the high sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio. These CCDs are capable of interlace scan to acquire moving images and progressive*2 scan to capture still images.
*2 Moving images cannot be acquired in the progressive scan mode.
Optical Super SteadyShot System
The DSR-PD170 employs the Super SteadyShot system, in which horizontal and vertical movements are detected independently by the sensors. The prism system located behind the lens adjusts and optically compensates for unsteady camera handling, while maintaining image quality.
Large 180,000-dot LCD Precision Black & White Viewfinder
The 0.44-inch*4 type black and white LCD viewfinder provides 500 lines of horizontal resolution. In addition, a large-sized eyecup is used, and the window size of the magnifier has also been enlarged. This allows easier focusing and more comfortable use of the viewfinder.
*4 Viewable area, measured diagonally

Advanced HAD Technology

Advanced HAD technology reduces fixed pattern noise and vertical smear, thus allowing the camera to achieve a high sensitivity and excellent signal to noise ratio.

Low Light Shooting

The minimum illumination has been improved from 2lx for the DSR-PD150/PD150P to 1lx thanks to the use of an enhanced noisereduction process.
16:9 Widescreen Acquisition Mode
The DSR-PD170 is capable of widescreen 16:9 acquisition image capturing (video only), producing true 16:9 images. This is different from the letterboxing view commonly used in many equivalent models.

Optical 12x Zoom Lens

The optical 12x zoom lens*3 allows the DSR-PD170 to maintain picture quality even at high zoom ratios.
*3 Digital zoom of 24x or 48x can also be achieved by the proper menu selection.

Recorder Features

High-Quality Digital Recording for Professionals
DVCAM/DV Selectable Recording
The DSR-PD170 adopts the DVCAM format, which uses 8-bit digital component recording with a 5:1 compression ratio and a sampling rate of 4:1:1 (for 525/60) or 4:2:0 (for 625/50). The unique compression algorithm provides excellent picture quality and superb multigeneration dubbing performance. An audio lock mode synchronizes the audio to the video for professional editing results. Should a longer record time be required, the DSR-PD170 is also capable of recording and playing back DV format signals (SP mode only)*5.
*5 The transition from cut to cut may not be smooth between scenes where the recording format is changed from DV to DVCAM, or vice versa. This is a normal and expected phenomenon. Audio Dub mode is NOT possible when recorded in DV (SP) format.
external audio source. The input level can be selected from Mic/Line/ Mic Attenuator positions. 48 V microphone power can be supplied. INPUT 1 audio can be recorded on CH1 only, or both CH1 and CH2 audio tracks (selected by switch). One directional microphone is supplied.
16-bit/12-bit PCM Digital Sound and Audio Dub Capability

The DSR-PD170 records two channels of audio with the 48 kHz/16-bit or 32 kHz/12-bit mode. On a pre-recorded tape with two channels recorded in the 32 kHz/12-bit mode, it can dub an additional two channels through the external microphone input (XLR connectors or RCA pin jacks, DVCAM recorded tape only).
2 Ch. XLR Audio Input and Supplied Directional Microphone
The DSR-PD170 provides two XLR audio input connectors for connecting professional microphones or for feeding an

Newly Developed Hybrid LCD Monitor with a High Resolution of more than 210,000 Pixels
The DSR-PD170 has a high-resolution color LCD monitor for viewing the recorded picture, or checking the playback picture on location. With its large screen, it is also helpful in setting menus or the audio recording level, as well as monitoring the camera and audio status while mounted on a tripod. The hybrid LCD monitor combines the characteristics of both transmissive and reflective LCD panels. The transmissive LCD panel is suited for dark conditions such as in the studio, while the reflective LCD panel provides clear viewing in bright conditions such as under strong sunlight.
On-handle Zoom Lever and Rec. Start/Stop Button
In order to facilitate zoom control and recording operation during low-angle shooting, an additional zoom lever and a rec. start/stop button have been added to the carrying handle. Zoom speed can be selected from H (faster), L (slower) or OFF via the three-position slide switch located on the side of the handle.

Using this manual Note on TV color systems
TV color systems differ from country to country. To view your recordings on a TV, you need an NTSC system-based TV.

Getting started

Copyright precautions
Television programs, films, video tapes, and other materials may be copyrighted. Unauthorized recording of such materials may be contrary to the provision of the copyright laws.
Precautions on camcorder care
The LCD screen and the viewfinder are manufactured using high-precision technology. However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (red, blue, green or white) that constantly appear on the LCD screen and in the viewfinder. These points occur normally in the manufacturing process and do not affect the recorded picture in any way. Effective ratio of pixels is 99.99% or more. Do not let your camcorder get wet. Keep your camcorder away from rain and sea water. Letting your camcorder get wet may cause your camcorder to malfunction. Sometimes this malfunction cannot be repaired [a]. Never leave your camcorder exposed to temperatures above 60 C (140 F), such as in a car parked in the sun or under direct sunlight [b]. Do not place your camcorder so as to point the viewfinder or the LCD screen or lens toward the sun. The inside of the viewfinder, LCD screen, or lens may be damaged [c]. [a] [b] [c]
Contents of the recording cannot be compensated if recording or playback is not made due to a malfunction of the camcorder, video tape, etc.

Additional Information

Compatibility of DVCAM and DV formats
DVCAM format is developed as a more reliable and higher end format than consumer DV format. Here explained are the differences, compatibility, and limitations on editing about DVCAM and DV formats.

Differences between DVCAM and DV formats
Item Track pitch Audio sampling frequency Audio recording mode 1) Time code DVCAM 15 m 12 bit: 32 kHz 16 bit: 48 kHz Lock mode Drop frame system or Non-drop frame system (SMPTE time code) DV 10 m 12 bit: 32 kHz 16 bit: 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz Unlock mode Drop frame system only
There are two modes for audio recording, lock mode and unlock mode. In lock mode, the sampling frequencies of audio and video are synchronized. In unlock mode, which consumer DV format adopts, the two sampling frequencies are independent. Therefore, lock mode is more effective than unlock mode in digital processing and smooth transition during audio editing.
Mini DVCAM and mini DV cassettes
Both mini DVCAM and mini DV cassettes can be used on mini DVCAM or mini DV video equipment. The recording format of picture is defined according to recorders format as described below. Recorders format Cassettes format DVCAM DVCAM DV DV DVCAM DV Recording format DVCAM DVCAM DV DV
This digital camcorder complies with DVCAM format. Though mini DV cassettes can be used for recording, we recommend you to use mini DVCAM cassettes to get the most out of high reliability of DVCAM format. The recording time of mini DV cassettes is 2/3 shorter than that indicated on the mini DV cassettes.
Compatibility on playback
Some tapes cannot be played back on mini DVCAM or mini DV video equipment. Tape DV-formatted On DV video equipment Can be played back On DVCAM video equipment Can be played back (only when recorded in SP mode) Can be played back

When using the mini DVCAM video equipment to carry out DV dubbing of a tape recorded in DV format, the tape produced will be in DVCAM format as follows: Audio recording mode will be unlock mode. The time code format will be partly maladjusted. (There will be no effect on the recorded picture except in certain case.) 2) If the tape is to be dubbed is DVCAM formatted tape as in 1), the tape produced will be in DVCAM format as follows: Audio recording mode will be unlock mode. The time code format will be partly maladjusted. 3) Depending on signal conditions of the source tape, you may not be able to edit the tape using the DV connectors. 4) Audio recording mode of the edited tape is lock mode. 5) Some mini DV video equipment may be able to play back a DVCAM-formatted tape. Even if the tape is played back, contents of the playback cannot be guaranteed. 6) DV-formatted tapes recorded in SP mode only can be used as source tapes. 7) Depending on model of video equipment, you may not be able to edit.

If the cassette memory function does not work
Reinsert a cassette a few times. The gold-plated connector of mini DVCAM/mini DV cassettes may be dirty or dusty.

Cleaning the connector

If the gold-plated connector of mini DVCAM/mini DV cassettes is dirty or dusty, you may not operate the function using cassette memory. Clean up the gold-plated connector with cotton-wool swab, about every 10 times ejection of a cassette. [b]

About i.LINK

Your camcorder is equipped with the DV input/output connector based on i.LINK (IEEE1394) standard. This section explains the specifications and features of i.LINK. What is i.LINK? i.LINK is a digital serial interface designed to integrate the devices equipped with i.LINK connector. By connecting i.LINK devices, i.LINK allows your device to: Transmit and receive data such as digital audio and digital video signals in two ways Control other i.LINK devices Easily connect with another device using just an i.LINK cable. Your i.LINK device is capable of connecting AV devices and perform various operations and data transfer. Further availability for connections with versatile equipment and operations will be planned in the future. Other advantages include the following feature. When connecting multiple i.LINK devices, your device cannot only perform operations and data transfer with the directly connected device but also perform them with any of the devices that are connected via other devices. Therefore, you will not need to concern the order of connecting devices. However, depending on the features and specifications of the connected devices, you may need to operate certain functions differently or may not be able to perform certain operations or data transfer. Note Your camcorder can be connected to one device with the i.LINK cable (DV cable). When you connect with a device that has two or more i.LINK connectors, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the connected device. Tips i.LINK, a nickname for IEEE 1394 that Sony proposed, is a trademark supported by a majority of companies worldwide. IEEE 1394 is an international standard defined by IEEE, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. About data transfer speed of i.LINK i.LINK defines a maximum data transfer speed of approximately 100, 200 and 400 Mbps* that are described as S100, S200 and S400 respectively. For i.LINK devices, a maximum data transfer speed that the device supports is identified on specifications page of the operating instructions supplied with the device or near its i.LINK connector. With a device that does not identify the data transfer speed, the maximum data transfer speed that the device supports is S100. When connecting with the device that support different data transfer speed, the actual data transfer speed may be different from those described on the i.LINK connectors. *What is Mbps? Mega bits per second. A measure of the rate at which data is transmitted per second. In case of 100 Mbps, 100 Mega bits of data can be transmitted per second. i. LINK operation with your camcorder For details on dubbing your camcorder to your VCR equipped with DV input/output connector , see pages 73, 83.
