Quick Start Guide
INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing a Sony Ericsson PC Card. Important: Do not insert your PC Card until you have installed the software. Your PC Card can use GPRS/EDGE or CSD for communication. You also can send and receive SMS messages. Note: Your Sony Ericsson PC Card does not support GSM voice calls.
WIRELESS MANAGER STATUS ICON
The Wireless Manager status icon is displayed in the Windows notification area when Wireless Manager is active. The icon displays the status of your PC Card and allows you to enable and disable the GSM radio transmitter.

Your laptop PC must meet or exceed the minimum system requirements for the installed version of Windows 2000 (SP4), XP (SP2) or Vista plus the following: Minimum 300 MHz Pentium compatible CPU for Windows 2000 and XP; 800MHz for Windows Vista. 32 bit CardBus type II PC Card slot. 30 MB free diskspace. You also will need the following items and information: SIM card with an appropriate network subscription. Wireless Manager CD that is included with your PC Card. Alternatively, you can download the software from the Sony Ericsson support Web site: www.SonyEricsson.com/Support

INSTALLING
THE SOFTWARE
The appearance of the Wireless Manager status icon indicates the status of the GSM GPRS/ EDGE Radio. The following icons represent the different states of the Wireless Manager status icon. Wireless Manager is waiting for your PC Card to be inserted. GSM GPRS/EDGE Radio is set to Off. The GSM GPRS/EDGE radio is set to On, but there is no GSM or GPRS/EDGE service available. The PC Card has GSM and GPRS/EDGE service. GPRS/EDGE, SMS and CSD may be used, provided these are supported by your subscription. Your PC Card has GSM service and a signal strength of 3 out of 5 bars. SMS and CSD may be used, provided these are supported by your subscription.
1. Insert the Wireless Manager CD into your CD drive. If the CD does not start automatically, select Start Run, (Windows Vista: Start All Programs Accessories Run) and then type D:/setup.exe in the Open field (where D is your CD drive). The InstallShield Wizard for Wireless Manager opens. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Important: The installation process might pause for several minutes. During this time the drivers are saved to your hard drive. Do not cancel. 3. When installation is complete, click Finish. Important: Wireless Manager is installed in the same language as your Windows installation. If Wireless Manager does not support your language, English is installed.
ENABLING
AND DISABLING THE
To disable the GSM GPRS/EDGE radio, right-click and select Turn GSM GPRS/EDGE/ UMTS Radio Off. To enable the GSM GPRS/EDGE radio, right-click and select Turn GSM GPRS/EDGE/ UMTS Radio On. Alternatively, from the Wireless Manager window select File Turn GSM GPRS/EDGE/UMTS Radio On/Off.

PC CARD
1. Locate your Sony Ericsson PC Card and your SIM card. 2. Insert your SIM card into the slot on the back of your PC Card. Make sure the gold contacts on the SIM card are facing downwards and the angled corner of the SIM card is placed into the PC Card as shown. 3. Fully insert your PC Card into your laptop. After a few seconds, the New Hardware wizard opens and driver software installation takes place. 4. Your PC Card and Wireless Manager are now installed and ready for use.

The Sony Ericsson GC89 EDGE/Wireless LAN PC Card can connect to wireless networks using the popular IEEE 802.11b/g standards. You will find more information in the GC89 Wireless LAN Guide and the Wireless Manager User Guide.
STARTING WIRELESS MANAGER
1. Select Start All Programs Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager. 2. If requested, enter your SIM card PIN, and then click OK. Wireless Manager opens. After a short delay your signal strength and the name of your network operator are displayed in the Status window.

NETWORK SUBSCRIPTION
Contact your network operator and make sure that your subscription is enabled for the services that you want to use (GPRS/EDGE, CSD and SMS). Your subscription must support Internet access. WAP or MMS access is not suitable. For corporate users, a VPN connection or a dedicated APN may be required. Make a note of your IMEI Number for future reference: ________________________ The IMEI number is a unique 15 digit number located on the back of your PC Card that is used to identify your PC Card on a mobile network.
The following documents are included on the CD that is provided with your PC Card: Wireless Manager User Guide contains information about how to use Wireless Manager. PC Card User Guide containing a detailed description of your Sony Ericsson PC Card and the features that it supports. GC89 Wireless LAN Guide which provides information about the Wireless LAN feature of the GC89 PC Card and tips for installation and usage on Windows Vista. When you install Wireless Manager, these user guides are automatically saved to your PC. See Start All Programs Sony Ericsson. The latest information and updates for your PC Card and Wireless Manager are available from the Sony Ericsson Web site: www.SonyEricsson.com.

GPRS/EDGE
CONNECTION
1. From Wireless Manager, select File Connection Wizard. 2. Select Create a new connection, and enter a name for the new connection. For example, type "My Connection". 3. Click Next. 4. Select GPRS/EDGE/UMTS. 5. If your network operator is listed in the Choose Network drop-down list, complete the following steps: a. Select your network operator, and then click Next. The APN is displayed. b. Click Next. The user name and password are displayed. 6. If your network operator is NOT listed in the Choose Network drop-down list or you have a dedicated corporate APN, complete the following steps. a. Obtain the APN, user name, and password from your network operator or network administrator. b. Select <Other>, and then click Next. c. In the Primary APN field, enter the APN, and then click Next. d. On the User ID dialog box, enter the user ID and password. 7. If you are required to enter a one-time use password each time you log on, clear the Save Password checkbox. Note: Many network operators leave user ID and password blank. 8. Click Next. 9. Click Finish.

Note: You may still use your GC89 on Windows 98SE and Me by downloading Wireless Manager 3.4. You also will need the following items and information: Access rights to a Wireless LAN network. Wireless Manager CD that is included with your GC89. Alternatively, you can download the software from the Sony Ericsson support Web site: www.SonyEricsson.com/Support INSTALLING AND USING WIRELESS MANAGER ON WINDOWS VISTA Follow the instructions in the Quick Start Guide to install the Wireless Manager application. Note: Install Wireless Manager before you insert your GC89 into your laptop. When using Windows Vista, please note the following points: All Programs Accessories 1. If the CD does not start automatically, select Start Run and then type D:/setup.exe in the Open field (where D is your CD drive). 2. When you insert the GC89 following software installation, Vista will open a window called Driver Software Installation and install the device driver software for your GC89. You may click the Close button when all drivers are ready to use. 3. The Wireless Manager status window displays only GSM GPRS/EDGE information. Wireless LAN status is provided by Windows Vista. ACCESS TO A WIRELESS LAN A subscription or pre-payment is usually required to use a public Internet hotspot beyond the introductory log-in Web pages. To access a home or small office wireless LAN, you typically need a network key for WEP or WPA-Personal (WPA-PSK). To access a corporate wireless LAN, you need access rights and configuration information. Contact your network administrator to arrange access. CREATING A WIRELESS LAN CONNECTION If you are using Windows 2000, you must use the Sony Ericsson Wireless Utility. If you are using Windows XP, you can use the Windows XP user interface or you can use the Sony Ericsson Wireless Utility. For information about how to use the Windows XP user interface, see the Wireless Manager User Guide. Windows Vista has an advanced user interface for creating and managing Wireless LAN connections which you must use - see below. CREATING A WIRELESS LAN CONNECTION WITH SONY ERICSSON WIRELESS UTILITY (WINDOWS 2000/XP) To find and connect to Wireless networks: 1. In the Windows notification area, double-click on the Wireless Utility icon 2. Available networks are listed. Select the one you require. 3. Enter and confirm secure network key information or check the Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network even though it is not secure check box. 4. Click Connect. If the network you require is not listed but is in range, or you need to manually configure the settings: 1. On the Windows desktop, right-click on the Wireless Utility icon in the system tray and select Open Utility. 2. Click the Wireless Networks tab. 3. Make sure that the Let this tool manage your wireless settings check box is selected. 4. In the Preferred networks panel, click Add. 5. In the Network name (SSID) field, type the network name to which you want to connect. 6. If your wireless LAN service does not require network key information, in the Data Encryption drop-down list, select Disabled. 7. If your wireless LAN service requires WEP network key Information, complete the following steps: a. In the Data Encryption drop-down list, select WEP. b. If your Wireless LAN service requires WPA-PSK (WPA Personal) network key information, complete the following steps: a. In the Network Authentication drop-down list, select WPA-PSK. b. Click Apply. CREATING A WIRELESS LAN CONNECTION IN WINDOWS VISTA 1. Select Start Connect To. The Connect to a network window opens and available wireless LAN networks are listed. 2. Select the required network and click Connect. If the network is secure, enter the required information and click Connect again. 3. If the network you require is not listed but is in range, or you want to manually configure the settings, select Set up a connection or network then select Manually Connect to a Wireless Network and follow the on-screen instructions. Note: If the network name is hidden (non-broadcast SSID) you must select the Connect even if the network is not broadcasting check box. The automatic connection option should be disabled in this case.

SONY ERICSSON WIRELESS UTILITY ICON (WINDOWS 2000/XP ONLY) The wireless LAN radio is disabled. The wireless LAN radio is enabled, but there is no wireless LAN connection. Your GC89 is connected to a wireless LAN. The degree to which this icon is green indicates the signal strength. ENABLING AND DISABLING THE WIRELESS LAN RADIO (2000/XP ONLY) and select Disable Radio. To disable the wireless LAN radio, right-click To enable the wireless LAN radio, right-click and select Enable Radio. Disabling the radio enables you to disconnect from the Wireless LAN network. Alternatively, use the Disable/Enable button on the right side of the Wireless Manager Status window or select File Turn 802.11 Radio On/Off. WINDOWS VISTA NETWORK ICON No Wireless LAN connection. Click on the icon and select Connect to a network. To access network settings, click on the icon and select Network and Sharing Center. Connected to a wireless LAN. Click on the icon to see network name and signal strength. Right click, select Disconnect from and your network name to disconnect. ENABLING AND DISABLING THE WIRELESS LAN RADIO (WINDOWS VISTA) Control Panel and under Network and Internet select View Network 1. Select Start status and tasks. 2. Select Manage network connections and find the network connection with device name Sony Ericsson 802.11g Wireless LAN Adapter. 3. Right-click on this connection and select Disable to turn off the radio, Enable to turn it back on.
