Introduction

The Bluetooth headset HBH-65 is a portable headset solution based on Bluetooth wireless technology. See Guidelines for safe and efficient use on page 14 and Limited Warranty on page 16 before using your headset. What is Bluetooth wireless technology? The Bluetooth wireless technology makes it possible to connect any compatible portable and stationary communications device without using cables. The technology is based on a radio link that offers fast and reliable transmission of voice and data information. It does not require a line-of-sight connection in order to establish communication. Bluetooth wireless technology uses a globally available frequency range intended to ensure communication compatibility worldwide.
How can I use my headset? You can connect your HBH-65 headset to your mobile phone or PC or any device with Bluetooth wireless technology that supports the Headset profile or the Handsfree profile. This users guide focuses on how to use the headset with your mobile phone. You need to have a phone with built-in Bluetooth capability, or a phone with a Bluetooth adapter connected to it. When the headset is connected to your mobile phone, you can use voice control to make calls (if your phone supports this function). The phone can be tucked away in your pocket or in a bag. You can handle incoming and outgoing calls, and adjust the volume, using the buttons on the headset.

Getting started Before you can use your headset, you must first: Charge the headset battery, using an appropriate Sony Ericsson charger. Pair the headset with a device, for example, a mobile phone. Compatible Sony Ericsson or Ericsson chargers: Travel Charger CTR-10 Standard Charger CST-13 Cigarette Lighter Adapter CLA-11 Charging The headset comes with a built-in rechargeable battery. We recommend that you charge the battery until the headset indicator light turns green before using the headset for the first time. During charging, the indicator light shows a steady red light if the headset is turned off, and flashes red if the headset is on. When the battery is fully charged, the indicator shows a steady green light if the headset is off, or a flashing green light if the headset is on.

To charge the battery

1. Connect the charger to the headset and to the mains. The flash symbol on the charger plug must face upwards. 2. It takes 1 to 1.5 hours to fully recharge the battery. 3. Tilt the charger plug upwards to remove it when disconnecting the charger.

Pairing

Up to 1m
To turn the headset off Press and hold the call handling button until you hear a short high tone followed by a short low tone. The headset indicator light switches off. Pairing the headset with a phone You pair the headset with the phone by adding it to a list of paired devices in the phone. The two devices then recognize each other when they connect. Once you have paired your headset with the phone, you do not need to pair it again until you want to use it with another device. To pair the headset with a Sony Ericsson or Ericsson phone With the headset turned off, press and hold the call handling button for up to 10 seconds until the indicator light on the headset flashes green and red. In the phone, scroll to Extras or Connect, YES , Bluetooth, YES, Paired devices, YES, Add device, YES, Phone initiates, YES. A list of device types that you can pair with your phone appears. Scroll to Handsfree or Headset, YES. Make sure that the headset is within 1 m (3 ft) of the phone. HBH-65 appears in the display. Press YES.

When pairing has been completed, the headset indicator light flashes green. To pair the headset with another make of phone 1. Prepare your phone according to the phones user documentation on pairing. 2. Press the call handling button for up to 10 seconds until the indicator light on the headset flashes green and red. The headset is now ready for pairing. 3. Continue according to the instructions in the phones user documentation. The headset passkey is 0000. Putting on the headset 1. Make sure the ear hook forms an angle of 90. 2. Place the ear hook behind your ear. 3. Make sure the microphone is pointing towards your mouth. 4. Make sure the speaker is positioned as shown in the picture.

Using the headset

Once you have paired the headset with your phone, you can make and receive calls using the headset as long as it is turned on and within range of the phone up to 10 m (30 ft) outdoors or up to 5 m (15 ft) indoors with no solid objects in between. For best performance, use the headset and phone in the same room.

Limited performance

If your phone supports voice dialling and it is activated, you can use this feature with the headset. The following instructions cover the use of the headset with a Sony Ericsson or Ericsson phone with built-in Bluetooth capability. Note: Always make sure the Bluetooth operation mode in the phone is on when using the Bluetooth headset. Making and answering calls Phone functionality is still available when the headset is connected. You can make and answer calls using the buttons on the headset, or using the keys on the phone, as usual. To make a call using voice dialling 1. Make sure the phone and the headset are on and within range of each other. Press the call handling button. 2. It may take a while to set up the connection between the phone and the headset. During this time, you might hear a repeated tone in the headset. After the beep, voice dial as you normally would. 3. End the call by pressing the call handling button.

To answer a call using the call handling button 1. When the headset rings, press the call handling button. Note: If the phone rings first, wait until the headset rings, then press the call handling button. 2. End the call by pressing the call handling button. To answer a second call You have to use the phone keypad to answer and handle a second call, but you can still use the headset for talking and listening. You cannot use the headset buttons during a second call. Refer to the phone's user documentation on how to handle more than one call simultaneously. To reject a call When the headset rings, press and hold the call handling button until you hear a long beep. Using voice commands Voice commands are especially useful when you are using the headset. Examples of voice commands are dialling, re-dialling, answering and rejecting calls. For more information on voice commands, refer to the phones user documentation.
Adjusting the volume You can adjust the headset speaker volume during a call, or the ring volume when you are not engaged in a call. To adjust the volume To increase the volume, press To decrease the volume, press.
Transferring sound from phone to headset If you make a call using your phone, you can transfer the sound to the headset if the headset is on, paired with the phone, and within range. To transfer the sound to the headset During a call, press the call handling button to transfer the sound to the headset. The headset beeps until the sound has been transferred. If the headset is turned on after a call has been initiated, you can transfer the sound to the headset by pressing the call handling button. Note: To transfer the sound from the headset to the phone, refer to the phones user documentation. Lost connection to headset If the connection to the headset is lost during an ongoing call, press the YES key on the phone to transfer the call to the phone, otherwise the call is disconnected after 30 seconds.
Note: The headset uses increasing volume. For safety reasons, it starts with a low volume level before the maximum set level is reached. To turn off the microphone During a call, press and release both and to turn off the microphone. A repeated beep is heard while the microphone is turned off. Press and release both and again to resume the conversation.
Headset battery status With the headset on in standby mode, press and release both and. The battery status is indicated by one of these three signals, after an initial long green flash: High three green flashes Medium two green flashes Low one green flash Resetting the headset You may want to reset the headset to its default settings. This also clears all current pairings. To reset the headset 1. With the headset turned off, press and hold the call handling button for up to 10 seconds until the indicator light on the headset flashes green and red. Then release the button. 2. Press and hold the call handling button again until you hear one low beep, followed a moment later by another two beeps. The headset is now turned off, and has been reset.

Troubleshooting

No sound contact between headset and phone The headset and the phone you are using with it have to be paired to recognize each other. They also have to be within range of each other. Make sure that there are no solid objects, such as walls or furniture, in between the headset and the phone. The indicator light flashes red This indicates that the headset has only limited talk and standby time left. Charge the headset battery for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. The indicator light flashes green twice In standby mode, the indicator light might flash green twice rapidly at intervals of approximately 3 seconds. This indicates that there is no mobile network within range. Move to get a signal that is strong enough, or try searching for a new network in the GSM networks menu of your phone.
No indication of charging is shown If you charge a headset battery that is empty, or has not been used for a long time, it may take up to 30 minutes before a light to indicate charging (a steady red light) appears. Some functions do not work according to the instruction If you notice that you cannot make use of all the features in the HBH-65 headset, please refer to the phoness user documentation, or check with an Sony Ericsson service partner. For information about support and for Users guides for Ericsson, Sony and Sony Ericsson mobile phones, see http://www.SonyEricsson.com/support The headset is automatically switched off There are two reasons why the headset might be switched off automatically: The battery is too low. The indicator light on the headset flashes red and you hear a low beep. Charge the headset battery for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
The headset has been exposed to extreme temperatures. Let the headset rest for a while in room temperature, then turn it on again. The headset has been in pairing mode for more than 10 minutes. Voice commands not working properly If you fail using the voice commands you have recorded through your phone, record them through the headset instead. Guidelines for safe and efficient use Note: Read this information before using your Bluetooth headset. Changes or modifications to this Bluetooth headset not expressly approved by Sony Ericsson may void the user's authority to operate the equipment. Please check for any exceptions, due to national requirements or limitations, in usage of Bluetooth equipment before using this product. Product care Please note only Sony Ericsson service partners should remove or replace the battery. Do not expose your product to liquid or moisture or to humidity. Do not expose your product to extreme high or low temperatures. Do not expose your product to lit candles, cigarettes, or cigars, or to open flames etc. Do not drop, throw or try to bend the product as rough treatment could damage it. Do not use any other accessories than Sony Ericsson or Ericsson originals intended for use with this product. Use of non-original accessories may result in loss of performance, damage to the product, fire, electric shock or injury. The warranty does not cover product failures which have been caused by use of non-original accessories. Do not attempt to disassemble your product. The product does not contain consumer serviceable or replaceable components. Only Sony Ericsson service partners should perform service. Do not keep the product in an area prone to dust and dirt. Only use a soft damp cloth to clean your product. If you will not be using the product for a while, store it in a place that is dry, free from damp, dust and extreme temperatures.
Radio frequency exposure Your Bluetooth headset is a radio transmitter and receiver. When in operation, it communicates with a Bluetooth equipped mobile device by receiving and transmitting radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (microwaves) in the frequency range 2400 to 2500 MHz. The output power of the radio transmitter is low, 0.001 watt. Your Bluetooth headset is designed to operate in compliance with the RF exposure guidelines and limits set by national authorities and international health agencies when used with any compatible Sony Ericsson or Ericsson mobile phone. Driving Check the laws and regulations on the use of mobile phones and hands free equipment in the areas where you drive. Always give full attention to driving and pull off the road and park before making or answering a call if driving conditions so require. RF energy may affect some electronic systems in motor vehicles such as car stereo, safety equipment etc. Check with your vehicle manufacturer's representative to be sure that your mobile phone or Bluetooth headset will not affect the electronic systems in your vehicle. Electronic equipment Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from RF energy. However, certain electronic equipment is not, therefore: Do not use your Bluetooth headset near medical equipment without requesting permission. If you are using any personal medical devices, e.g. a pacemaker or a hearing aid, please read in your mobile phone's User's Guide for further information. Aircraft Turn your Bluetooth headset OFF before boarding any aircraft. To prevent interference with communication systems, you must not use your Bluetooth headset while the plane is in the air.

Blasting areas Turn off all your electronic devices when in a blasting area or in areas posted turn off two-way radio to avoid interfering with blasting operations. Construction crews often use remote control RF devices to set off explosives. Potentially explosive atmospheres Turn off your electronic device when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere. It is rare, but your electronic device could generate sparks. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death. Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly marked. Power supply Connect the AC power adapter only to designated power sources as marked on the product. To reduce risk of damage to the electric cord, remove it from the outlet by holding onto the AC adapter rather than the cord. Make sure the cord is positioned so that it will not be stepped on, tripped over or otherwise subjected to damage or stress. To reduce risk of electric shock, unplug the unit from any power source before attempting to clean it. The AC power adapter must not be used outdoors or in damp areas. DANGER Never alter the AC cord or plug. If the plug will not fit into the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Improper connection can result in risk of electric shock. Placing Sony Ericsson recommends that the Bluetooth headset is worn in positions where it will not be subject to pressure since such pressure may result in bodily injury or damage to the product. Children Do not allow children to play with your Bluetooth headset since it contains small parts that could become detached and create a choking hazard.
Emergency calls IMPORTANT! This Bluetooth headset and the electronic device connected to the hands-free operate using radio signals, cellular and landline networks as well as user-programmed functions, which cannot guarantee connection under all conditions. Therefore you should never rely solely upon any electronic device for essential communications (e.g. medical emergencies). Remember, in order to make or receive calls, the hands-free and the electronic device connected to the hands free must be switched on and in a service area with adequate cellular signal strength. Emergency calls may not be possible on all cellular phone networks or when certain network services and/or phone features are in use. Check with your local service provider. Battery information A rechargeable battery has a long service life if treated properly. A new battery or one that has not been used for a long period of time could have reduced capacity the first few times it is used. Do not expose the battery to extreme temperatures, never above +55C (+131F). For maximum battery capacity, use the battery in room temperature. If the battery is used in low temperatures, the battery capacity will be reduced. The battery can only be charged in temperatures between +10C (+50F) and +45C (+113F). Recycling the battery in your Bluetooth headset The battery in your Bluetooth headset must be disposed of properly and should never be placed in municipal waste. The Sony Ericsson service partner removing the battery will dispose of it according to local regulations.

Limited Warranty Subject to the conditions of this Limited Warranty, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Sony Ericsson), S-Lund, Sweden warrants this product to be free from defects in design, material and workmanship at the time of its original purchase by a consumer, and for a subsequent period of one (1) year. Should your Product need warranty service, please return it to the dealer from whom it was purchased or contact your local Sony Ericsson Customer Care Center to get further information. What we will do If, during the warranty period, this Product fails to operate under normal use and service, due to defects in materials or workmanship, the Sony Ericsson authorized distributors or service partners will, at their option, either repair or replace the Product in accordance with the conditions stipulated herein. Conditions 1. The warranty is valid only if the original receipt issued to the original purchaser by the dealer, specifying the date of purchase and serial number, is presented with the Product to be repaired or replaced. Sony Ericsson reserves the right to refuse warranty service if this information has been removed or changed after the original purchase of the Product from the dealer. 2. If Sony Ericsson repairs or replaces the Product, the repaired or replaced Product shall be warranted for the remaining time of the original warranty period or for ninety (90) days from the date of repair, whichever is longer. Repair or replacement may involve the use of functionally equivalent reconditioned units. Replaced parts or components will become the property of Sony Ericsson. 3. This warranty does not cover any failure of the Product due to normal wear and tear, or due to misuse, including but not limited to use in other than the normal and customary manner, in accordance with instructions for use and maintenance of the Product. Nor does this warranty cover any failure of the product due to accident, modification or adjustment, acts of God or damage resulting from liquid.
4. This warranty does not cover Product failures due to improper repair installations, modifications or service performed by a non-Sony Ericsson authorized person. 5. How to pair my Bluetooth Headset/Handsfree HBH-30/-35/-60/-65/-200/-300/-600/-602/-608/-610/ -660/-662 with a D750
Pairing, sometimes called bonding/adding, two devices with each other means that both devices will work together when switched on and within range. Pairing is done once and normally there is no need to repeat this procedure. Please follow the description below. Note that the description for preparing your phone is found at the end. 1. 2. 3. HBH-30/HBH-35/HBH-60/HBH-65 (NOT the HBH-200) Make sure that the headset is fully charged, switched on and within 1 m (3 ft) of the phone. Press the CALL HANDLING BUTTON for approximately 5 seconds until your hear a long high frequent beep and the light flashes red and green. The headset is now in Pairing mode. Prepare the phone according to the description below. HBH-200 Make sure that the handsfree is fully charged, switched on and within 1 m (3 ft) of the phone. Enter the menu in the HBH-200 by pressing the ON/OFF BUTTON and the CALL BUTTON (the round button on the side) at the same time quickly. Use the + or the - button and scroll to ADVANCED and press the CALL BUTTON to confirm. Select NEW PHONE and press the CALL BUTTON. In the HBH-200 display, READY TO ADD PREPARE PHONE appears. Prepare the phone according to the description below. HBH-300/-600/-602/-608/-610 Make sure that the headset is fully charged, switched on and within 1 m (3 ft) of the phone. The first time you turn your headset on, it immediately goes into pairing mode. The light flashes red and green. If so, please proceed to the phone instructions below. To manually prepare the headset, press the two VOLUME BUTTONS, (+) and (-), at the same time for approximately 5 seconds until your hear a long high frequent beep and the light flashes red and green. The headset is now in Pairing mode.

HBH-660/-662 Make sure that the headset is fully charged, switched on and within 1 m (3 ft) of the phone. The first time you turn your headset on, it immediately goes into pairing mode. There are three symbols showing in the headset display: a headset, two rotating arrows and a phone. If so, please proceed to phone instructions below. To manually prepare the headset, press the two VOLUME BUTTONS, (+) and (-), at the same time for approximately 5 seconds, until your hear a long high frequent beep. D750 Enter the main menu, scroll to SETTINGS, and select the CONNECTIVITY tab. Select BLUETOOTH, MY DEVICES. Select NEW DEVICE, Add. The phone starts searching for devices. Make sure that the headset is in pairing mode. When the HBH-xxx becomes visible in the DEVICES FOUND menu, highlight it and press Select. Enter the PASSKEY (0000 by default) and press Ok. HBH-xxx is now added to the list of paired devices and is ready to use.
