Jus been givin this for my satio, plug it in and it flashes away, the satio recognises what it is but thats it no little box to select what frequency to transmit on
Does the satio support this accessory, or is it just another one of the thousand things it doesn't?

w995 info request
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011
Hello, I'm thinking of getting a w995, could someone post some screenshots of equalizer's, play mode, and the other two options? 2) Also, I believe the eq can be manually set. Is the manual your own individual setting, or does it modify the preset? Any other info appreciated. reviews ? Thanks

http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Ericsson-W995-Review_id2195/page/3 See this review of the W995.Yes, it has 9 preset equaliser settings or, you can opt for manual settings which you can tailor to your own taste.
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 2. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 12:32 PM
when you choose manual, does it adjust the presets, or doesn't?
also, are the equalizers for the full range (low mid high) or are they just different types of bass?
thanks
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 3. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 12:54 PM
When you change the manual settings, it does not change the presets because the presets are separate and fixed. You can see which frequencies are accenuated for each preset. With manual, you can select frequencies between 16kHz at the Treble end and 400Hz at the Bass end, plus Clear Bass at an even lower but unspecified frequency.

ok so what your saying is you get the full set of equalizer plus a clear bass section?
what about clear stereo, is that standard or an option such as stereo widening?
If i were to upload a standard piece of audio, and the same piece played via my w910i megabass, would you be able to take the standard audio and play it with powerful bass and clear audio (w995) as best as possible for comparison and upload it?
thanks,
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 5. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 3:28 PM
Yes, you get a full, 5-frequency/band equaliser (400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.3kHz, 16kHz), each of which has 6 settings, and a choice of 1,2 or 3 Clear Bass settings.Clear Stereo comes as standard and you also have an optional Stereo Widening setting. Send me the track.
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 6. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 4:50 PM
i created a blend of trax and created a megabass w910i version, except that i think it depends on the system that is playing the track. so even if the phone sounds brill, the laptop might not. so scrap that.
ok thanks for the info, very detailed and i think i grasp what you're saying. I don't think it's like megabass where you just choose it, full stop. It's more of an experiment to find your own taste isn't it?

I know there are clear audio bluetooth headsets, but what about bluetooth car audio? Does the clear tech still kick in? It's a sony car system, but it isn't clear audio or megabass, it's xplode, i'm not sure if there is megabass or clear audio car audio.
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 7. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 5:26 PM
Yes, that's right, you actually need to hear it from the phone itself. But you can actually select to have Clear Bass on (1,2 or 3 levels) or off, so this function on the W995 replaces the Megabass function from other phones and is more sophisticated because it's multilevel. The quality of the headset you use will certainly play a role as well.

so anyway, what do you think of the battery life? is it smart phone battery life?
good phone?
i'm considering it because they put all their tech into this phone, then moved on to smartphones didn't they?
What's the gps like. offline maps? like ovi maps? GPS Antenna built in?

Yeah, it's a great phone, better in my opinion, than any so-called "smartphone" out there! The battery life is very good--you can get 2-4 days out of a single full charge, depending on usage, whereas most "smartphones" need charging every day.The GPS is very accurate and very fast to get a sattelite fix if you also use A-GPS.No inbuilt off-line maps I'm afraid, but it comes with 3 months free Wayfinder Navigation.Perhaps most importantly, the W995 has very stable software, hardly ever hangs or freezes, and it's also very well built, so I would highly recommend it! Have a look at the W995 review on Phone Arena for more details and pictures.
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 10. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 7:19 PM
i agree that dumb phones are better. So the phone has a gps antenna but no offline maps? what a pain, i'm gonna have to use ovi maps then.
You get iplayer? youtube?
what dlna? share movies? music? photos? or just photos?
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 11. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 7:29 PM
Yes, it's got BBCi player, Youtube, DLNA, movies from Playnow arena, etc.Just make sure you get an unbranded/generic handset though, otherwise you might find some of the features are missing; network branding always spoils the phone and I've read plenty of reports where this has resulted in poor performance, slow processing, etc.
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 12. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 7:41 PM
debranded ones are around 200 quid. is it db3150? if it is, i could debrand it myself, however, once it is debranded how would i unlock it? can't do it by cable. i know orange
Generated by Jive SBS on 2011-06-06+01:00 4
expect you to wait 3 months and they want the last 2 digits i mentioned. if i debrand it, they would change so would possibly know it's not orange?
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 13. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 7:51 PM
Well, it's worth the price for a generic handset, because you never know what problems the debranding process might cause. And you avoid all the hassle with the unlocking as well, unless you can buy the unlocking code from a website.
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 14. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 8:14 PM
websites are full of fakers. they never give you the code, just cable. even the ones that claim code. there may be a few real ones though.
i agree that i don't want the hassle bit it is a bit costly for generic. i suppose i could wait a few months, unlock it, then debrand it, then use it. are you selling yours?
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 15. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 8:52 PM
No I'm not selling mine, but have a look on Amazon.
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 16. Re: w995 info request Apr 20, 2011 8:57 PM
amazon 250 quid for new 170 refurb
ebay around 180 new, i'll keep an eye on ebay but i waited ever since the phone came out because of the price tag, i'm not really going to be spending that much on the phone. i got my w910i for 30 quid, i believe water damaged. fixed it up for nothing, perfectly working

sorry, for double post. reason being, MORE info needed
I understand the w995 is walkman and cybershot. when you highlight the camera, does it say cybershot (indicating cybershot) or does it say camera (indicating normal camera) and if the latter, then what evidence is there of cybershot?
the thread lives on!!!
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 18. Re: w995 info request May 9, 2011 7:56 PM
It's primarily a walkman phone with cybershot features. What does cybershot mean anyway?
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 19. Re: w995 info request May 10, 2011 5:30 PM
i don't really know because i have no idea about cameras (hence the w910i) but do know that megapixel is the image quality, optical zoom as real zoom and digital zoom is just strech and flash is for poor lighting. On a side note, the k800i's xenon flash messes the image up if there is a decent amount of light, but works best when it is pitch black. i don't get it.
Anyway, the k800i has xenon flash and this has photo flash maybe that's the difference. i don't really know and would rarely use the camera anyway. Also, i have seen a few images, xenon vs photo flash and some phones xenon is similar to some phones photo so i'm not too bothered.

i was kinda hoping you'd know the cybershot feature
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 20. Re: w995 info request May 10, 2011 5:52 PM
Well, my question was rhetorical. Cybershot, from the Greek word Cyber (system of control, i.e., Cybernetics) and shot, which is self-explanatory, is the word given to Sony digital cameras and certain SE camera mobiles which have certain advanced features such as Carl Zeiss lenses, Infolithium batteries and the characteristic overall design. However, the features vary between models and although the W995 doesn't strictly fullfill the definition of a Cybershot, it certainly comes very close, especially having an 8.1MP camera and a whole host of camera settings which you rarely find in a mobile.I can attest to the fact that it takes great pics as well, the only problem being that you need to reduce the Exposure Value on sunny days as the default EV is set too high.
daaceking 83 posts since Apr 12, 2011 21. Re: w995 info request May 10, 2011 10:44 PM
in my defence, when you read the question it doesn't sound rhetorical
still, i didn't know all the cyber stuff. very interseting. i'm just currently looking for the phone not too expensive. i've found a good number but i'm in no hurry to buy it just yet.
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 22. Re: w995 info request May 10, 2011 10:57 PM
Perhaps what I should have said, is that the word Cybershot might be quite elusive or even misleading in terms of the impression that it gives. It is after all, just another digital camera among a host of others on the market.

thanks, much appreciated.
now, moving on to anothert area, viruses and hacking!
I know smartphones can be virused, such as nokia via their sis setup files and apple can be when it has been jailbroken although there is no viruses, there has been an example of a virus, something about changing backgrounds. I can't say for android.
So anyway, the w995, while you're using wifi, can it be virused or similar damage?
also, i know in old devices, bluetooth was hacked, i'm not sure if the new version are protected but do you have any info?
Dr_Chris 4,965 posts since Aug 16, 2010 24. Re: w995 info request May 11, 2011 3:04 PM
http://virus.netqin.com/en/j2me/ Here's a list of viruses that may affect Java phones such as the W995, and other phones based on different OS's.However, from what I know, Javabased phones are much less likely to get infected than Android or other smartphone-OS based mobiles. There's always a chance that you might pick up a virus from a wifi hot spot connection, I suppose, but what I usually do is have my PC's antivirus software scan the phone, from time to time, when file sharing over my own router's wifi connection.I don't know about Bluetooth security.

i'm not going to click the link because i've never seen that type of address.
from what i understood, was that a pc gets infected because it is possible to install software which affects the core of the system, such as a software update. iphones are usually protected because you can't install anything except from the appstore, until jailbroken.
java phones, usually run apps in a sandbox, and ask permissions to write and read user data, this is where i thought the damage could be done. i.e. with the user's permission. similar to symbian/nokia. i think it can install software to the core, for example, my 6630 couldn't play wma files. however, i found a codec which did allow me to play using the phone's default player (although it only allowed me to play a few tracks and i had to use the actual software for full support). i have never actually come across the thing you mentioned about connecting to a hotspot. that can be a virus?
the bluetooth thing was something like, the remote hacker could make your phone dial to premium rate numbers or something.
i have an audio quality question.
i have noticed on the w595 that if you play through the mmr-70 fm transmitter, you get this wierd effect that each time a bass note plays, the general audio volume reduces until it comes to a few seconds of music where there is no bass, and turns itself up. I'm hoping the clear tech on the w995 doesn't work in the same way.
i don't know if you have a nmokia phone, but on nokia phone's there is a lot of treble which is rediculous and when adjusting the volume near the top end of the volume control, it becomes non-linear and either sounds too quiet or too loud, which can damage your hearing because of the stupid levels of treble. the w995 isn't like this right?
