Before you start
Your phone has a built-in modem. You can use it to connect a computer to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to browse the Internet or manage your email messages. The instructions in this document focus on how to set up a computer running Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional using your phone as a modem to access the Internet. Before you set up your computer and start using the modem, make sure you have the following: GSM phone subscription that supports data transmission using a packet switched connection (GPRS) or a dial-up connection (CSD/HSCSD). Phone subscription that covers Internet browsing. If you are not sure whether you have this, please contact your network operator. A data account (WAP configuration) set up in your phone. A simple way of setting up a data account is to ask your network operator to send you a message that contains the required information to create an account automatically on your mobile phone. You can also use the Phone setup on www.sonyericsson.com/support to have all necessary WAP settings sent to your phone in a text message (SMS).
System requirements
The Sony Ericsson PC Suite software that you find it on the CD that comes with your phone is designed to work with Windows 2000 (SP3/SP4), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional (SP1/SP2).
The general system requirements are: At least 500 MB free hard disk space. Internet Explorer 5.0 or later has to be installed. Windows 2000 (SP3/SP4): 128 MB RAM, 500 MHz Windows XP (SP1/SP2): 256 MB RAM, 500 MHz

Installing PC Suite
With the Sony Ericsson Mobile Networking Wizard you can create networking connections on your computer. The Mobile Networking Wizard program is included in PC Suite that you find on the CD that comes with your phone. You can also download it from www.sonyericsson.com/support. Before installing any new or updated version of PC Suite, all previous programs related to phone communication has to be uninstalled. It is recommended to uninstall from the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (Windows Explorer).
To install PC Suite from the CD
1. Insert the CD that came with your phone. The CD should start automatically. If the installation program does not start, use this procedure on your computer: click Start and select Run., write D:/start.exe and click OK (D: is the CD drive letter on the system). 2. Select a language. 3. Click Install in the PC Suite section. 4. Click Next to continue the installation. 5. Read and accept the licence agreement. Click Next. 6. Select Complete as setup type. Click Next. 7. Click Install to begin the installation. 8. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
To download and install the latest version of PC Suite

Select a phone from the list or enter your phone model in the text field. Select Software downloads. Select Sony Ericsson PC Suite X.X.X under PC Suite. Select Download and save the file to your computer. Double-click the downloaded PC Suite file. Select a language. Click Install in the PC Suite section. Click Next to continue the installation. Read and accept the licence agreement. Click Next. Select Complete as setup type. Click Next. Click Install to begin the installation. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
Setting up the modem
To use the phone as a modem, you need to connect your phone and the computer. You can do this using the USB cable or the infrared port.
Connecting using the USB cable
When connecting the USB cable to use the phone as a modem, select Phone mode in your phone. Do not disconnect the USB cable when transferring files as this may harm the phone memory or the Memory Stick Micro (M2). For safe disconnection of the USB cable, right-click the Removable Disk icon in Windows Explorer and select Eject. A message appears in the phone when it is safe to disconnect the cable from the phone.
To connect using the USB cable
1. 2. 3. 4. Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Phone: Select Phone mode. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed automatically. The Phone Connection Wizard appears. 5. In the Phone Connection Wizard, click Next to continue. 6. Enter a name for your phone in the text field. 7. Click Finish to close the wizard.

Connecting using the infrared port
Before you connect your phone to a computer, the infrared device in the computer must be installed and working properly. See the manufacturers product documentation.
To connect the phone to a computer using the infrared port
1. Phone: Turn on infrared. From standby select Menu } Settings } Connectivity } Infrared port } On. 2. Computer: If necessary, activate the infrared port. 3. Place your phone with a maximum distance of 20 cm next to the computer so that the infrared ports are facing each other. 4. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed automatically. The Phone Connection Wizard appears. 5. In the Phone Connection Wizard, click Next to continue. 6. Enter a name for your phone in the text field. 7. Click Finish to close the wizard. The procedures, terms and application names may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the infrared device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturers product documentation. To create a dial-up connection % 5 Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD). To create a packet switched data connection % 6 Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (GPRS).
Creating an Internet connection
You have to create a connection to be able to connect to the Internet. First make sure you have the correct Internet settings in your phone. Contact your network operator or use the Phone setup on www.sonyericsson.com/support to get the required settings for your phone.
Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD)
To create a connection
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Connect your phone and computer. % 4 Setting up the modem. Open the Mobile Networking Wizard from PC Suite. Click New Connection. Select Dial-up and click Next. Select the correct modem from the list. Click Next. Name the new connection and select if you want to use the new connection as your default connection. Click Next. Enter the phone number for the dial-up connection. Enter User ID, Password and Domain for the connection. You only need to enter Password and User ID if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. Click Finish to create the connection. Click the connect icon (a green square) in the Mobile Networking Wizard.
Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (GPRS)
There are three options that you can use to create an Internet connection: From the phone use the Internet settings from the phone. Automatic mode use predefined settings from your network operator. Manual mode customize the settings from your network operator.
To create a connection using the Internet settings from the phone

Mark Use settings from an existing entry in the device and click Next. Select the configuration of your network operator from the list and click Next. Enter User ID and Password for the connection if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. Click Finish to create the connection. Click the connect icon (a green square) in the Mobile Networking Wizard.
To create a connection using the automatic mode

Enter User ID and Password for the connection if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. Click Finish to create the connection. Click the connect icon (a green square) in the Mobile Networking Wizard.
To create a connection using the manual mode

Before you use the USB cable
You can connect your phone to a computer using the USB cable to transfer files to and from a computer. You can also synchronize, transfer files and use your phone as a modem. Before you start using the USB cable, make sure you have: The USB cable provided with your phone. A computer that supports USB connection. Microsoft Windows 2000. Microsoft Windows XP (Pro and Home). Microsoft Windows Vista (all versions).
Only use a USB cable supported by your phone. Do not remove the USB cable from your phone or computer during file transfer as this may corrupt the phone memory or the memory card.
Connecting your phone to a computer
The Sony Ericsson USB cable that comes with the phone can be used to connect a computer to your phone. Depending on what you want to do, you need to choose between three different modes in the phone. Select Phone mode for synchronizing and Media transfer or Mass storage for transferring files. If you use the Sony Ericsson PC Suite together with your phone you can also transfer files in Phone mode. See the table for an overview of the different modes. To connect your phone to a computer using the USB cable
1. 2. 3. 4. Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Phone: Select Phone mode. Computer: Wait for the drivers to be installed (this is done automatically). The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you may need to identify and name the phone. 5. If the Phone Connection wizard appears: Click Next to continue. Enter a name for your phone. Click Finish. If you are having problems to connecting your phone to a computer via the USB cable try to restart your computer and reconnect your phone.
Phone mode
Before using Phone mode you must install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software on your computer. See Installing the Sony Ericsson PC Suite on page 5.
To use Phone mode
1. Computer: Start PC Suite from Start/Programs/Sony Ericsson/PC Suite. 2. Connect the USB cable to the phone and the computer. 3. Phone: From standby select Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > USB > USB mode > Phone mode. 4. Computer: When you are notified that the Sony Ericsson PC Suite has found your phone, you can start using the phone mode applications. For usage details, see the Sony Ericsson PC Suite Help section once the software has been installed on your computer.
Synchronizing
You can use the USB cable to synchronize phone contacts, appointments, bookmarks, tasks and notes with a computer program such as Microsoft Outlook. You can also synchronize with an Internet service using SyncML or a Microsoft Exchange Server using Exchange ActiveSync. For more information on Synchronization go to the Getting started section at www.sonyericsson.com/support. Before synchronizing you must install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software on your computer. See Installing the Sony Ericsson PC Suite on page 5.
Media transfer mode
The phone is on in this mode and appears as a media device on your computer. The PC Suite cannot access your phone in this mode.
To use Media transfer mode
1. Connect the USB cable to the phone and the computer. 2. Phone: Select Media transfer and the phone will remain activated during file transfer. 3. Computer: Wait until the phone memory and memory card appear as external disks in Microsoft Windows Explorer. 4. Drag and drop selected files between the phone and the computer. You need Microsoft Windows Media Player version 10 or higher to use this file transfer method.
Mass storage mode
You can drag and drop files between your phone or memory card and a computer in Microsoft Windows Explorer.
To use Mass storage mode
1. Connect the USB cable to the phone and the computer. 2. Phone: From standby select Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > USB > USB mode > Mass storage. The phone will shut down in this mode and restart when disconnected from the USB cable. 3. Computer: Wait until the phone memory and memory card appear as external disks in Microsoft Windows Explorer. 4. Computer: Double-click the My computer icon on the computer desktop to check that it is there. 5. Computer: In the My computer window, double-click the icon representing your phone under Devices with removable storage to view the Phone Memory and Memory Stick folders. 6. Copy and paste your file, or drag and drop it into the desired folder on your computer, in your phone memory or on your memory card.
To disconnect the USB cable safely
1. Right-click the removable disk icon in Windows Explorer. 2. Select Eject. 3. Disconnect the USB cable when the following message appears in the phone: Mass storage session ended. It is now safe to remove the USB cable. When you are using Mass storage mode do not disconnect the USB cable while files are being transferred. The files may become corrupted.
Installing the Sony Ericsson PC Suite
The Sony Ericsson PC Suite software is included in the PC Suite on the CD that comes with your phone. You can also download the PC Suite from www.sonyericsson.com/support. Before you install the PC Suite you need to uninstall any applications on your computer previously used to communicate with mobile phones, for example synchronization software.
Installing from the CD
To install the PC Suite from the CD
1. Insert the CD that came with the phone. The CD should start automatically, if not: click Start/Run. and type in D:/start.exe and click OK (D: is the CD drive letter on the system). 2. Installing Media Manager
The system requirements for using Media Manager on your computer are: At least 200 MB free hard disk space. Microsoft Windows XP (SP2 or later). 512 MB RAM. 1 GHz processor. A Microsoft Windows compatible sound card. A CD-ROM drive. A USB 2.0 cable and port. QuickTime 7.0 (available on the CD). Internet connection (for Gracenote CD identification and software activation). Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 (available on the CD). Microsoft Windows Explorer 5.0 or later (available on the CD). Before you install Media Manager you need to install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software on your computer. See Installing the Sony Ericsson PC Suite on page 5.
Installing from the PC Suite CD
To install Media Manager from the PC Suite CD
1. Insert the CD that came with the phone. The CD should start automatically, if not: click Start/Run. and type in D:/start.exe and click OK (D: is the CD drive letter on the system). 2. Select a language. 3. Click Install in the Media Manager section. 4. If needed, follow the instructions to install.NET Framework 2.0 from the CD. 5. In the installation wizard: Click Next to continue the installation. 6. Read and accept the licence agreement, then click Next.
7. Click Next to install to the default folder. 8. Click Install to begin the installation. 9. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
To download the latest version of Media Manager

Setting up the USB cable modem
You can use your phone as a modem by using the USB cable and the USB Internet mode in the phone. When connecting the USB cable, select Phone mode in the phone.
To set up the USB Internet mode
1. 2. 3. 4. Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Phone: Select Phone mode. Phone: From standby select Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > USB > USB network > USB network type > Phone as a modem. 5. Computer: The new connection appears in your Network connections folder.
The USB Internet mode has now been set up. When USB Internet mode is activated in the phone an NDIS5 Ethernet card is activated in the system. This is deactivated when the USB Internet mode is turned off.
Update service
To use Update service using a USB cable
Go to www.sonyericsson.com/support or click the Sony Ericsson Update service in the PC Suite software if installed on your computer. See Installing the Sony Ericsson PC Suite on page 5. Select a region and country. Follow the instructions on the screen.
