Applications

The Application Picker tab (7) is always displayed and enables five favourite applications to be reached with a single tap. When moving from one application to another, the original application is closed and the data is saved. Select to go the full Application List. All applications have a Menu Bar (8) from which you can select functions and navigate folders in the internal memory and on Memory Stick Duo. Many applications start with a list view. Simply tap once on the required item to open it and see it in detail. Scroll arrows (9) indicate when there is more information than will fit on the screen. The Status Bar (10) shows useful information. Tap on an icon to access more detail and to change settings. Tap to show or hide the keyboard during information entry.

The standby view shows short-cuts to the most commonly used applications. These can be personalized. Rotate the Jog Dial to highlight an icon then push inwards to select it. To see all applications that are available when the flip is closed, select and use the Jog Dial to scroll up and down the list
Getting started
Use this guide to quickly get your P800 up and running with the minimum effort. For more detailed instructions, see the P800 User Guide.
The Jog Dial
The Jog Dial (C) is a unique feature that speeds up operation of the P800 in many situations. It moves in five different directions as shown on the right. The following operations will demonstrate the use of the Jog Dial: 1. Rotate the Jog Dial up and down to highlight icons on the screen (flip closed) and press inwards to select the desired icon. 2. With the calendar selected, push the Jog Dial inwards. The Calendar opens - rotate to step through the days. 3. Press it backward to close the Calendar.
Preparation
1. Remove the battery compartment cover and insert your SIM card, as shown. 2. Insert the battery and replace the cover. 3. Connect the charger to the base of the P800. The plug flash symbol must face upwards. You should keep the charger connected until the battery has had its first full charge. 4. Press the On/Off button (E); the Power menu appears. 5. With the flip closed press the OK key on the keypad to power on the P800. 6. If the Enter PIN box appears, enter the PIN provided with the SIM card. The first time you use your P800 a setup wizard runs for entry of the basic settings.

The stylus
The stylus (R) is used to operate the touch sensitive screen. To prevent the screen becoming scratched, you should use the stylus that is provided with the P800. The screen is only sensitive when the flip is open. Slide the stylus upwards to remove it from the holder.
Transferring contacts from the SIM card to the P800
To Import all SIM Contacts (with the flip open): 1. From Contacts, tap All and select SIM phone book. 2. Now tap Edit and then Copy all to Contacts. To import a single SIM entry: 1. From Contacts, tap All and select SIM phone book. 2. Tap a SIM entry and select Edit and then Copy to Contacts.
Services Some of the functions available on the P800 are dependent on availability from your network operator and Internet service provider. Contact your network operator to check your subscription.
Making a call
With the flip closed: Enter the phone number and press the OK key. Press the OK key to end the call. Note that you can open the Call list with the OK key and you can also quickly open Contacts by pressing and holding the key which has the first letter of the persons name. With the flip open: 1. From the Application Picker tab at the top of the screen, tap: The Speed Dial view opens. 2. In the lower right hand corner of the screen, tap: 3. Use the stylus to enter the number via the virtual keyboard. To dial the number tap the phone icon alongside the keyboard.
Configuring Internet and messaging
The easiest way to set up your P800 for the Internet and messaging is through your service provider. Check your service providers website for information or contact their support desk and ask about automatic remote configuration of ISP (Internet Service Provider) settings, e-mail and MMS settings. Surf the internet
The Internet button (P) is located on the right side of the P800, and is used to automatically open the browser. You can surf and download files from WAP and World Wide Web sites.
The CommuniCam Memory Stick Duo
The P800 is supplied with a Sony Memory Stick Duo. This is a removable memory card that extends the P800 internal memory. Insert the Memory Stick Duo as shown in the picture with the contacts facing up. Do not apply excessive force. To remove, press inwards with the stylus. When your P800 is connected to the PC you can move data (for example MP3s) to and from the Memory Stick Duo.
The CommuniCam button (O) is located on the right side of the P800. Press the CommuniCam button to switch to camera mode. You will then see live pictures on the screen. The CommuniCam button now becomes the shutter release - press it to take pictures. To review the pictures, tap: at the lower right side of the screen with the flip open.

Sending pictures with MMS
If you have multimedia messaging (MMS) setup on your P800, you can send pictures you have taken. Sending a multimedia message 1. With the flip open tap 2. Tap the picture to view it. 3. From the Pictures menu select Send as. A menu appears; tap the down arrow, select MMS and then tap Done. 4. The MMS Message Editor opens. Tap the picture to edit it. Use the other features of the editor to add text, audio and more images. 5. Tap on the address tab and either enter a number in the To field, or tap To and select from the contact list. 6. Tap the Send button. to review your pictures.
Video Player
Your P800 can play videos that are stored in local memory or on Memory Stick Duo. To play the example video stored on your P800: 1. From the applications list, tap Video. 2. Tap the title. The video starts - adjust the volume with the Jog Dial. You will find other video clips on the multimedia CD supplied with your P800. You can also play videos over the internet. Click the play link on the web page and the Video Player will start. Note that there will be a delay before playback starts and the video is not saved to memory. This is known as streaming.

Personalising your P800
There are a number of ways you can give your P800 a personal touch. For example, you can change the application shortcuts or choose a screen saver. Try setting a new background picture: 1. Open the flip and tap the applications icon.
Audio Player
You can listen to music and audio clips with your P800. Simply select Audio from the list of applications and choose the track to listen to. Use the Jog Dial to adjust the volume, or tap on the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen. You can continue to listen with the flip closed, but you must re-open the audio application to stop listening.
Warning! The volume may be uncomfortably loud at the higher volume levels if the phone is close to your ear, or if you are using the stereo headset. Exposure to excessive volume levels may damage hearing.
2. Scroll down and tap the Control panel and then Display. 3. Tap the Wallpaper drop-down list and select Browse. 4. Choose an image, e.g. Landscape, tap Select and then Done and close the flip.
Making notes and sketches during a call
Select the Jotter application and choose New from the Jotter menu. You can now make notes using handwriting recognition, or tap the keyboard at the bottom of the screen (a second tap will remove it). Tap the drawing tab at the bottom of the page and select the colour and width of the pen to use from the icons alongside the tab. Tap the back icon to close and save the Jotter entry.
Installing new applications
You can load new applications into your P800. As with a PC, these applications may come from a variety of sources and may be supplied on a CD, or by an Internet download, etc. Before you can install new applications, from your PC, you must install PC Suite for P800. Simply insert the CD into your PC and follow the on screen instructions. For example, to install the MIBII: Alien Pursuit game: 1. Connect your P800 to the PC and insert the P800 Multimedia CD into the CD-ROM drive on your computer. It automatically opens. 2. Navigate the CD to the Games section. Select MIBII: Alien Pursuit and click Install. 3. Select target drive C or D (phone memory or Memory Stick Duo) and click OK. 4. The application is downloaded and installed; a message will be shown when the installation is complete. 5. You can now select MIBII from the application list.
Caution: To ensure that you do not lose your phone data and settings, you should do a back-up before loading any new applications. Warning: Installation of uncertified applications or non Sony Ericsson P800 files (.SIS) may cause your P800 system to crash.
Messages
The Messages application is used to manage your messages, to send and receive: Text messages containing text only (SMS) or including sound and graphics (EMS). Multimedia messages (via MMS) containing any combination of text, graphics, animations, photographs, sound, and ring tones. E-mail messages with optional attachments. You may also send messages items from several of the P800 applications using the Send as menu option.
Ring tones and other phone settings
To access the phone setting: 1. Open the flip and tap Phone, then tap the Edit menu and Preferences. 2. Now rotate the Jog Dial and press inwards to select the setting you would like to view or edit.
Synchronising
You can synchronise e-mail, contacts, calendar, tasks and jotter notes. You can also transfer applications and files to and from your P800. First install PC Suite for P800 1. Insert the PC Suite for P800 CD into the CD-ROM drive on your PC and run the installation program. 2. Use the SyncStation, infrared or Bluetooth Wireless Technology to connect your P800 to the PC. 3. A wizard opens on the PC. Follow the instructions on screen. 4. When the wizard has finished synchronising, a dialog opens. Choose the programs to be synchronised and click OK. To synchronise your P800 1. Connect your P800 to your PC. 2. Click located in the PCs system tray and choose Synchronise from the menu.
