| Used the camera for four months now. The HDR-HC5 has a number of nice features for a consumer camcorder. I love the camera so far. The still pictures as well as the video are truly amazing with the 1080i HD. | |

| Fairly expensive when I got it - about $100.00 more than it is currently. Quality seems to be great. You need a pretty good computer in order to import your videos in High Definition. If your computer is lacking, then the import will drop frames. | |

PRELIM NEW
Step-up New
Switch between HD & SD modes to capture video in high definition or standard definition on a MiniDV cassette. 10x optical/80x digital zoom keeps everything closes and clear with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* Lens. And the Dual Record Mode allows for the capture of still images at the same time as filming video.
2.1 Megapixel (Gross) ClearVid CMOS Sensor 1/3" ClearVid CMOS Sensor provides stunning detail and clarity with exceptional video (1080 lines of resolution - HD Mode or 530 lines of horizontal resolution - SD Mode) and still image performance (4.0 Megapixel). Unlike traditional CCD Imagers, CMOS Sensors require less power, providing better battery performance. Switchable HD/DV Format Recording The HDR-HC5 is capable of recording and playing back both High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) video recorded on a standard MiniDV cassette. Real-Time HD Codec Engine Sony developed a Real Time MPEG Encode/Decode system with reduced energy consumption and compact size to fit inside a personal camcorder. This engine provides efficient MPEG2 compression, and recording and playback of clear HD images at the same bit rate of the DV format, so that High Definition video can be recorded on the same MiniDV cassettes as are used for SD recording. x.v. Color x.v.Color can capture or display nearly twice as many (1.8x) viewable colors than currently possible. This provides a more accurate and vivid color range, for a more natural, lifelike overall experience. 10X Optical / 80XDigital Zoom The optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition, the Digital Zoom Interpolation means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zoom. Professional Quality Carl ZeissVarioSonnarT* Lens Carl Zeiss lenses have an advanced optical multi-layer coating that offers less glare and flare with increased contrast. This results in vivid image brilliance, true-to-life color saturation and perfectg renditions of subtle tones. The additional T* coating on the lens further reduces unwanted glare and flare. 2.7" Wide (16:9) Hybrid Touch Panel Clear Photo LCD Plus Display (211K Pixels)4 The 2.7" Wide (16:9) LCD screen provides excellent viewing clarity with imporoved resoltuion. The 211K pixel LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback, and the widescreen format makes shooting in 16:9 mode and composing shots even easier. Smooth Slow Record By increasing the record rate from 60 fields per second (fps) to 240 fps for 3 seconds allowing you to capture 3 seconds of fast motion and play the video back in 12 seconds. This is great for analyzing a golf swing or a viewing a bird in flight. In addition, record an audio track to narrate what is being seen in the video. Memory Stick Duo Media Slot3 Capture still images up to 2304x1728 resolution, directly onto Memory Stick Duo Media for easy trasfer to PCs for emailing, printing or shairing with other compatible Memory Stick media compatible devices. Dual Record While recording video in High Definition you have the ability to capture a 2.3 Megapixel still image directly to Memory Stick Duo media. Super SteadyShotImage Stabilization System Picture stabilization system that uses motion sensors to detect and compensate for camera "shake" without compromising picture quality like some other digital stabilization systems. Cinematic Mode Perfect for creating your own movie masterpieces, the HDR-HC5 Cinematic mode lends 24 frame film-like effect to your recordings. i.LINKInterface (IEEE1394)2 A high speed bi-directional digital video/audio communication between two compatible devices equipped with an IEEE1394 interface, including camcorders, digital VCRs, and PCs. Tele Macro Function Useful for shooting close up shots, but without having the camcorder casting a shadow on the subject. Images shot in the Tele Macro Mode will have the subject properly focused with the background unfocussed so that the subject stands out. Active Interface Shoe Provides a location directly on the camcorder on which to add optional accessories while providing power and twoway communication to those accessories. ADDITIONAL FEATURES Built-in Intelligent Flash Super NightShot Infrared System Scene Selection Modes Fader Effects Picture Effects InfoLithium Battery with AccuPower Meter System Multi-Language Menu One Touch Wide Angle Shooting Easy Handycam On Screen Zoom and Record Buttons Manual Focus

About the i.LINK Baud rate
i.LINKs maximum baud rate varies according to the device. There are 3 types. S100 (approx. 100Mbps*) S200 (approx. 200Mbps) S400 (approx. 400Mbps) The baud rate is listed under Specifications in the operating instructions of each piece of equipment. It is also indicated near the i.LINK interface on some devices. The baud rate may differ from the indicated value when the unit is connected to a device with a different maximum baud rate.
* What is Mbps?
About i.LINK
The HDV/DV Interface on this unit is an i.LINK-compliant Interface. This section describes the i.LINK standard and its features.
What is i.LINK?
i.LINK is a digital serial interface for transferring digital video, digital audio, and other data to other i.LINK-compatible devices. You can also control other devices using the i.LINK. i.LINK-compatible devices can be connected using an i.LINK cable. Possible applications are operations and data transactions with various digital AV devices. When two or more i.LINK-compatible devices are daisy-chained with the unit, operation becomes possible from any device in the chain. Note that operation method may vary, or data transactions may not be possible, depending on specifications and characteristics of the connected devices.
Normally, only one device can be connected to this unit with an i.LINK cable. When connecting this unit to an HDV/DV compatible device having two or more HDV/DV Interfaces, refer to the operating instructions of the device to be connected.
Mbps stands for megabits per second, or the amount of data that can be sent or received in one second. For example, a baud rate of 100 Mbps means that 100 megabits of data can be sent in one second.
To use i.LINK functions on this unit
For details on how to dub when this unit is connected to other video devices having an i.LINK Interface, see page 65. This unit can also be connected to other i.LINK-compatible devices made by Sony (e.g. a VAIO series personal computer) as well as to video devices. Some i.LINK compatible video devices, such as Digital Televisions, DVD, MICROMV or HDV recorders/players are not compatible with this unit. Before connecting to other devices, be sure to confirm whether the device is compatible with an HDV/DV device or not. For details on precautions and compatible application software, refer also to the operating instructions for the device to be connected.
i.LINK is a more familiar term for the IEEE1394 data transport bus proposed by Sony, and is a trademark approved by many corporations.
When connecting your camcorder to another i.LINK-compatible device, be sure to turn off the power of the device and disconnect the AC Adaptor from the wall outlet before connecting or disconnecting the i.LINK cable.
About the required i.LINK cable
Use the Sony i.LINK 4-pin-to-4-pin cable (during HDV/DV dubbing).
About x.v.Color
x.v.Color is a more familiar term for the xvYCC standard proposed by Sony, and is a trademark of Sony. xvYCC is an international standard for color space in video. This standard can express a wider color range than the currently used broadcast standard.
On using your camcorder
On use and care

In hot or humid locations When the lens is exposed to salty air such as at the seaside. Store in a well-ventilated location subject to little dirt or dust. To prevent mold, periodically clean the lens as described above. It is recommended that you operate your camcorder about once a month to keep it in optimum state for a long time. Continued ,
On charging the pre-installed rechargeable battery
Your camcorder has a pre-installed rechargeable battery to retain the date, time, and other settings even when the POWER switch is set to OFF (CHG). The preinstalled rechargeable battery is always charged while your camcorder is connected to the wall outlet via the AC Adaptor or while the battery pack is inserted. The rechargeable battery will be fully discharged in about 3 months if you do not use your camcorder at all without the AC Adaptor connected or the battery pack attached. Use your camcorder after charging the pre-installed rechargeable battery. However, even if the pre-installed rechargeable battery is not charged, the camcorder operation will not be affected as long as you are not recording the date. x Procedures Connect your camcorder to a wall outlet using the supplied AC Adaptor, and leave it with the POWER switch set to OFF (CHG) for more than 24 hours.
