About the AVCHD format
Your digital video camera recorder incorporates both the AVCHD format and the MPEG2 format for the recording function.
Recording and playback on your camcorder
Based on the AVCHD format, your camcorder records with the HD (high definition) image quality mentioned below. In addition to HD (high definition) image quality, your camcorder is capable of recording an SD (standard definition) signal in the conventional MPEG2 format. Video signal: AVCHD format 1440 1080/60i*3 Audio signal: Dolby Digital 5.1 ch Recording media: Internal hard disk drive
*1: 1080i specification A high definition specification which utilizes 1080 effective scanning lines and the interlace system. *2: 720p specification A high definition specification which utilizes 720 effective scanning lines and the progressive system. *3: Data recorded in AVCHD format other than the above mentioned cannot be played on your camcorder.
What is the AVCHD format?
The AVCHD format is a high definition digital video camera format used to record an HD (high definition) signal of either the 1080i specification*1 or the 720p specification*2 on 8 cm DVD discs, using efficient data compression coding technology. The MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format is adopted to compress video data, and the Dolby Digital or Linear PCM system is used to compress audio data. The MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format is capable of compressing images at higher efficiency than that of the conventional image compressing format. The MPEG-4 AVC/ H.264 format enables a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on 8 cm DVD discs, internal hard disk drive, flash memory, etc.
About the Memory Stick
A Memory Stick is a compact, portable IC recording medium with a large data capacity. You can use only a Memory Stick Duo, which is about the half size of a standard Memory Stick, with your camcorder. However, we do not guarantee the operation of all types of Memory Stick Duo on your camcorder. (See the list below for more details.)
Types of Memory Stick Recording/ Playback Data read/write speed may vary depending on the combination of the Memory Stick and Memory Stick compliant product you use.
On a Memory Stick Duo with a write-protect tab
You can prevent accidental erasure of images when you slide the write-protect tab on the Memory Stick Duo with a small tapered object, to the write-protect position.
Damaged or lost image data will not be compensated for, and may occur in the following cases:
If you eject the Memory Stick Duo, turn the power off on your camcorder, or remove the battery pack for replacement while your camcorder is reading or writing image files on the Memory Stick Duo (while the access lamp is lit or flashing). If you use the Memory Stick Duo near magnets or magnetic fields.
When the lithium battery becomes weak, the operating distance of the Remote Commander may shorten, or the Remote Commander may not function properly. In this case, replace the battery with a Sony CR2025 lithium battery. Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.
On charging the pre-installed rechargeable battery
Your camcorder has a pre-installed rechargeable battery to retain the date, time, and other settings even when the POWER switch is set to OFF (CHG). The preinstalled rechargeable battery is always charged while your camcorder is connected to the wall outlet via the AC Adaptor or while the battery pack is attached. The

AVCHD (30GB2 Hard Disk Drive)
PRELIM
Its the industrys first AVCHD camcorder that records high-definition to a hard disk drive. Record in high-definition and standard definition. 2.1 ClearVid CMOS Sensor requires less power than traditional CCD imagers, supplying longer battery performance.
HDR-SR1
Step-up 1/3" ClearVID CMOS Sensor with 1990K (effective) pixels provides stunning detail and clarity with exceptional video (up to 1080 lines of horizontal resolution - HD; 530 lines of horizontal resolution - SD) and still image performance. The Megapixel technology enhances your digital videos and digital still (3980K) photography performance. The optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition, the Digital Zoom interpolation means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zooms.
By increasing the record rate from 60 fields per second (fps) to 240 fps for 3 seconds allowing you to capture 3 seconds of fast motion and play the video back in 12 seconds. This is great for analyzing a golf swing or a viewing a bird in flight.
Provides a location directly on the camcorder to which one may add optional accessories while providing power and twoway communication with those accessories. With Sony's NightShot Infrared System you can capture natural looking video, even when shooting in low light. Record subjects up to 20 feet away using the built-in infrared system. While recording video in High Definition (HD) you have the ability to capture a 2.3 Megapixel (16:9) still image directly to Memory Stick Duo Media. While recording in Standard Definition you have the ability to capture a 1.7 Megapixel (4:3) still image directly to Memory Stick Duo media. Easily back up your footage (HD or SD) to your PC using the supplied software. The footage will be stored on your PCs hard drive for archiving purposes and viewing at a later time; the footage is stored by date for easy playback. In addition, only new footage is tranferred to your PC each time you Backup your footage. ADDITIONAL FEATURES One Touch DVD Burn Manual Focus Program AE (Auto Exposure) Modes Picture Effects
Capture still images up to 2304x1728 (4:3) resolution, directly onto Memory Stick Duo Media for easy transfer to PCs for emailing, printing or sharing with other compatible Memory Stick devices.
Carl Zeiss lenses have an advanced optical multi-layer coating for increased contrast. This results in vivid image brilliance, true-tolife color saturation and perfect renditions of subtle tones. The additional T coating on the lens further reduces unwanted glare and flare. The HDR-SR1 will record in Dolby Digital 5.1ch surround sound with a built-in microphone. By recording in 5.1 channel surround sound you can now experience your home movies with active sounds coming from all directions. Enjoy your personal home movies the way you experienced them while recording.
An advanced version of Sony's SteadyShot system that controls an even higher range of shake and vibration frequencies, to achieve an even higher level of smoothness without degradation of video like some other image stabilization systems. For additional control of the camcorder, the HDR-SR1 features Zoom and Record buttons on the frame of the LCD screen. This allows the user more flexibility when holding the camcorder, especially in overhead or low angle shots.
USB 2.0 interface provides an easy way to connect your Hard Disk Drive Handycam Camcorder to the computer for fast transfer of video and still images to your computer for editing. The camcorder can also be used as an external storage and/or playback device. Easily switch between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios for shooting, with just the touch of a button. A mechanical shutter system that provides progressive scan performance while utilizing an interlaced scanning system. Digital still images will be sharp and clear with excellent definition.
The 3.5" Wide (16:9) LCD screen provides excellent viewing clarity with improved resolution. The high resolution 211K pixel LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback, and the widescreen format makes shooting in 16:9 mode and composing shots even easier.
