Home Menu List

You can display the Home menu by pressing and holding the BACK/HOME button of the player. The Home menu is the starting point of each function, such as playing songs, videos (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only) and photos, searching for songs, listening to FM radio (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only), and changing settings.

Intelligent Shuffle

When playing songs recorded using variable bit rate (VBR) recording, a progress bar that shows the elapsed playback time, and the time itself is displayed, however, this time data is not stable, which may result in incorrect information being displayed. If no cover art has been registered, a preinstalled image in the player appears. Some cover art is not displayed, depending on its file format.
Playing Songs in Random Order (Intelligent Shuffle)
The player offers 2 different random modes (also known as shuffle play).
Playing songs released in the same year in random order

(Time Machine Shuffle)

The player randomly selects a release year and plays all transferred songs of that year in random order.

When you start Intelligent Shuffle play, the play mode changes to Shuffle or Shuffle&Repeat ( page 33). Even if you cancel Intelligent Shuffle, the Shuffle or Shuffle&Repeat setting for the play mode is kept. When you start the Time Machine Shuffle play, the playback range is set to Selected Range ( page 35). Intelligent Shuffle play is automatically canceled by any of the following operations: Starting playback of a song by selecting it from the Music Library, etc. Changing the play mode. Changing the playback range. Tuning the FM radio (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only). Playing a video (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only).
The controls of the player cannot be operated while a year is being selected. A shuffle play of all songs begins if none of the songs on the player have a release year assigned to them. If all the songs on the player that have a release year assigned have the same release year, or some of songs have the same release year and the rest of them have no release year assigned, the animation that appears while release year is being selected is not displayed and playback starts. Songs with no release year record are not selected in Time Machine Shuffle play and are not played.
Playing all songs in random order
All the songs stored on the player are played in random order.

If you set the screensaver to Clock or Blank ( page 78) and there is no operation for a while, the screen changes to the clock display or blank screen. However, if you set New Song Pop Up to On, the screen turns on automatically whenever a song changes to another song.

Displaying the Music Option Menu
You can display the Music option menu by pressing the OPTION/PWROFF button on a list screen (including the thumbnail screen), such as a song list, or on the music Now Playing screen. From the Music option menu, various settings of music are available. The option items shown on the option menu vary, depending on the screen from which you display the option menu.

The Clear Stereo setting is not applied while a video (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only) is playing or you are using the FM tuner (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only). The Clear Stereo function is designed to obtain maximum effect with the supplied headphones. The Clear Stereo effect may not be obtained with other headphones. When using other headphones, set Clear Stereo to Off.
Correcting Sound in the High Range

(DSEE(Sound Enhancer))

Activating the DSEE(Sound Enhance)* feature, you can hear rich and natural sound almost exactly like the original source.

press the button to confirm. On: The DSEE(Sound Enhance)* function is activated, and plays back naturally extended sound that is close to the original sound. Off: Plays back normal sound. (Default setting)
* DSEE, which stands for Digital Sound Enhancement Engine, is a technology developed by Sony, to enhance the sound quality of compressed audio files by restoring high-range sound removed by the compression process.
The DSEE(Sound Enhance) setting is not applied while a video (NWZ-S615F/S616F/ S618F only) is playing or you are using the FM tuner (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only). The DSEE(Sound Enhance) function is not effective for a song with a file format that is not compressed, or song that is of a high bit rate with no treble loss. In the case of a song of very low bit rate, the DSEE(Sound Enhance) function will not be effective.
Adjusting the Volume Level (Dynamic Normalizer)
You can reduce the volume level between songs. With this setting, when listening to album songs in the shuffle play mode, the volume level between songs is moderated to minimize the difference in their recording levels.

press the button to confirm. On: Minimizes the difference of the volume level between songs. Off: Plays back songs with their original volume level as transferred. (Default setting)
The Dynamic Normalizer setting is not applied while a video (NWZ-S615F/S616F/ S618F only) is playing or you are using the FM tuner (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only).
Playing Videos (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only)

Playing a Video

You can play videos by transferring video files to the player using Windows Explorer, or another transfer capable software. The player offers 2 types of play mode; play back one video file only (one file play) and play back all video files stored on the player continuously (Continuous Playback).

Playing Photos

Displaying a Photo
You can display photos by transferring photo files to the player using Windows Explorer, or another transfer capable software. You can either display one photo fully on the screen (single display) or play back a number of photos continuously (slide show play) ( page 63).

A playback of songs or FM tuner reception (NWZ-S615F/S616F/S618F only) continues even while you are searching for photos in the photo folder lists, or photo lists or the Now Playing screen of the Photo is displayed. You can play back the photos in a selected folder continuously (slide show play) ( page 63). You can arrange photos transferred to the player by folder. Select the player (as [WALKMAN]) using Windows Explorer, drag and drop a new folder just under the PICTURES, PICTURE or DCIM folder. For details on data hierarchy, see page 97. To delete photo files from the player, use the software you used to transfer the photo files, or Windows Explorer.

Up to 1,000 photo folders can be displayed in the photo folder lists, and up to 10,000 photos can be displayed in the photo lists. If there are photos stored in several folders, up to a maximum of 10,000 photos can be displayed. If the size of the photo is too large, or the photo file is damaged, appears, and the photo cannot be played back. If photos are not compliant with DCF 2.0 (or folder/file name is long., etc), operation time (to display photos or slideshow) may take more time.
Setting the Photo Orientation
You can set the photo orientation from among Vertical, Horizontal (right), or Horizontal (left).

The photo orientation can be set on the Now Playing screen of the photo. Press the OPTION/PWROFF button, and select Photo Orientation from the option menu.
Setting the Display of the Photo Screen
You can display or hide the detailed information of a photo, such as an icon that shows playback status, etc., while playing back a photo.

You can play back photos in a selected folder continuously.

2 Presetting broadcast stations automatically (Auto Preset)
You can preset receivable broadcast stations (up to 30 stations) in your area automatically by selecting Auto Preset. When you use the FM tuner for the first time, or when you move to a new area, we recommend you preset receivable broadcast stations by selecting Auto Preset.

to confirm. The receivable broadcast stations will be preset in order from low to high frequency. Auto Preset completed. appears when presetting is completed, then the first preset station is ready to be received.

Presets the currently tuned-in broadcast station ( page 71). Delete from Preset Deletes a broadcast station from the preset stations ( page 72). Auto Preset Presets the broadcast stations automatically ( page 69). Scan Sensitivity Adjusts the sensitivity of the tuner reception ( page 73). Mono/Auto Changes to either monaural or stereo ( page 74). Go to the song playback screen Starts playback of the last played song. Clock Display Displays the current time.
