Highlights
Design Compactness and extreme portability, only 1.3 kg, distinguish the LIFEBOOK B Series from the other LIFEBOOK models. The stylish finish with blue silver top, silver bottom and white keyboard make it stylish and elegant. The design of the LIFEBOOK B Series gets a finishing touch through the cylindrical formed battery. The TouchScreen is protected by a solid magnesium alloy lid and all interfaces are protected by rubber port covers. TouchScreen The new B Series comes with a low reflection TouchScreen display for optimal cursor control. The low reflection TouchScreen is intended for use with a built-in stylus and is ideal for putting sketches and diagrams into Windows applications, it is also suited for drag and drop functionality and Internet use. Multifunctional panel The LIFEBOOK B Series features a multifunctional panel. Four buttons above the keyboard can be configured to perform two functions: Security Panel To secure system access the LIFEBOOK B Series offers the Security Panel. To enter the BIOS and to start the notebook the user has to enter a four digit PIN code. Quick Touch application buttons Once your notebook is powered on, the Security Panel buttons become Quick Touch buttons. They may be used as shortcuts for launching your Web browser, E-mail and other applications. SmartCard enabled The LIFEBOOK B Series is fitted with the SmartCard enabled PCMCIA controller which can also be found in the other notebooks of the LIFEBOOK range. This means great investment protection as SmartCards are a key component of the public-key infrastructure which is integrated into the Windows platform. This feature together with the Security Panel will make your LIFEBOOK a highly secure notebook.

Intel Mobile Pentium III ultra low voltage processor
The B Series comes with a powerful mobile Pentium III 600 MHz ultra low voltage processor with SpeedStep technology. As the processor operates on less than 1 volt and consumes less than 0,5 watt in optimized battery mode, the battery life is better than other processors of the same frequency. In addition, the advanced transfer with 256 KB L2 cache on-die enhances the performance.
Intel chipset The LIFEBOOK B Series is fitted with an Intel 440MX chipset with 100 MHz front-side bus. BIOS The BIOS has been enhanced by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Extended BIOS features: Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0 Wired for Management (WfM) 2.0 Pre Execution Enhancement (PXE) Main memory The new LIFEBOOK B Series has 1 free SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) slot, which enables main memory capacity to be increased up to a maximum of 256 MB. SDRAM: The LIFEBOOK B-2545 utilizes 100 MHz SDRAM modules. Hard disks Based on an Ultra DMA 33 IDE controller the LIFEBOOK B Series permits a data transfer rate of max. 33 MB/s to the hard disk. Currently, the available IDE hard disk capacity is 10 GB or 20GB. Disk protection technology Most notebooks in the industry have their hard disks simply screwed into the chassis. This means that if the notebook is dropped, the shock force goes directly to, and usually damages, the disk. For the LIFEBOOK B Series, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has developed small shock absorbers into which the disk is fitted which give up to 60% improved resilience to disk damage. Display The LIFEBOOK B-2545 comes with a 10.4-inch TouchScreen display. It is intended for use with a stylus which clips neatly and securely into a recess at the edge of the lid. The TouchScreen itself is made up of a pressure sensitive, transparent sheet in front of the display. It allows fast and accurate positioning (0.1mm sensing accuracy). A solid magnesium alloy lid protects the screen from damage, such as cracks, resulting from the system being accidentally squeezed when it is packed away. The TFT display is bright and does not suffer from increased reflections. Graphics The LIFEBOOK B-2545 features an ATI Mobility-M graphics controller with 4 MB VRAM. Its outstanding features include: Dual-View in conjunction with Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE: simultaneous presentation of two separate applications on LCD display and monitor. This function is particularly useful for presentations, layout comparisons, serial letters and much more besides. Flicker-free monitor refresh rates up to 100 Hz
Page 4 of 10 External CRT An external monitor interface with a recommended resolution of up to 1280 x 1024 pixels is featured on the LIFEBOOK B Series, this port is duplicated on the Port Replicator. Audio TM Audio functionality is integrated in the Intel 440MX chipset and is SoundBlaster Pro-compatible. The system is equipped with internal stereo speakers and a microphone as well as connectors for attaching external audio devices. Operating system B-2545: The LIFEBOOK B-2545 is preconfigured with Windows 98SE/ME Dual Installation or Windows NT/2000 Dual Installation. Windows 98/ME Dual Installation Win ME is designed for improved user experience by including new system safeguards and help functions for a troublefree operating system. The focus is also on improved multimedia features like managing, sharing and manipulating digital photos, music and video. Windows NT/2000 Dual Installation Windows 2000 Professional guarantees greater productivity by combining Windows 98 functions with the tried-andtested features of Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. It offers improved system security, constant access to data, optional dial-in to computer networks and efficient access management. Windows 2000 also supports ACPI. B-2547: TM The B-2547 with integrated Bluetooth module is supported by Windows 2000 only.
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP contains the benefits of both Windows Me and Windows 2000. Windows XP combines the multimedia support of Windows Me together with the stability of Windows 2000. Windows XP Professional offers all of the benefits of Windows 2000 Professional, while extending these benefits by enhancing the core functionality, particularly in the areas of compatibility, mobility, reliability, and manageability. Windows XP Professional will add new features such as Remote Assistance, Remote Desktop, and improvements to help and support that will further reduce administrative costs.
Windows XP Professional has also been developed with Microsofts.NET strategy in mind, meaning that it will become a platform for delivering important.NET services, such as Instant Messaging and Passport authentication.
As soon as it becomes available, the operating system can be installed on the LIFEBOOK B Series provided that there is a minimum of 128 Mbyte main memory. Hardware requirements are designed and compatible with Windows XP Port Replicator Included as a standard part of the package is a new 125g Port Replicator which provides parallel and serial ports. Also included are one PS/2, one VGA port, power supply and a floppy connector. A network jack enables LAN pass through. The Port Replicator is easy to connect and its colour is the same as the mobile base.
Power supply The AC adapter accepts an input voltage ranging from 100V to 240V at a frequency range of 50Hz to 60Hz. When the LIFEBOOK is running on AC power, the AC adapter indicator appears above the keyboard. The power supply automatically senses the incoming line voltage and frequency and adjusts itself accordingly. The Li-Ion batteries are available with 3 or 6 cells.
Page 5 of 10 Communication The LIFEBOOK B Series offers several communication solutions that can replace the use of expensive individual devices. Mini PCI An internal port to connect the modem / LAN combo to the systemboard is called mini PCI. This port offers you the possibility to chose between two Combos: Modem / LAN Combo To cater to the increasing networking requirements of our customers, Fujitsu Siemens Computers offers a LAN module, which supports 10/100 Mbps in combination with a 56Kb / V.90 modem. Wherever you are, you only have to log-in and you will get access to your data via e-mail, fax or phone. Modem / IEEE 1394 Combo (for projects only) Another possibility is the combination of an integrated 56Kb / V.90 modem / IEEE 1394 Combo. Bluetooth TM Bluetooth is designed as a short-range (10 100m) cable replacement technology linking multiple devices wirelessly for synchronization, data transmission and file transfer. Furthermore TM it allows Bluetooth equipped devices to access the LAN or Internet quickly and easily. The B2547 model is prepared with an internal Bluetooth module with a range of 100m. More information like White Papers can be found under: http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/rl/products/solutions/wireless2.html Fast Infrared The LIFEBOOK models come with a built-in Fast Infrared interface as standard. This allows cable free data transfer, e.g. between a desktop computer and a notebook or communication with other peripheral devices such as printers, projects or mobile phones. Video conferences and image transmissions Video conferences and image transmissions are implemented using Internet communication programs such as Microsoft NetMeeting and a USB camera. The USB camera is an affordable, small, handy camera that is easy to connect to the LIFEBOOK B Series. Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) ACPI is implemented by Microsoft in Windows 98 SE and W2K operating systems. The LIFEBOOK B-2545 comes preequipped with all the necessary hardware and software and so is ACPI-ready. The suspend/resume button can be programmed for one of two power saving modes: Save-to-RAM and Save-to-Disk. In Save-to-RAM mode, the notebook goes into a sleep state. A few seconds after pressing the button for the second time, the user is returned to the point where he or she finished working. When the LIFEBOOK B Series is placed in Save-to-Disk mode, the entire system status, i.e. the status of all applications, all installed devices and main memory, is stored on the hard disk. Fujitsu Siemens Computers advanced cooling technology As processor frequencies increase, so does the heat generated. The solutions that most notebook vendors use to dissipate this heat are bigger and bigger fans, to the extent that some notebooks are becoming very noisy and, with the fan at full speed, can almost hover on the desk. Fujitsu Siemens Computers has spent years developing worlds leading Heat Pipe technology that enables the heat to be carried away from the processor. Besides this, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has also invested heavily in developing thermal analysis tools to ensure that our notebooks are the coolest on the market.
Page 6 of 10 Ergonomics Keyboard The keyboard on a sub-notebook has to be a compromise between size and usability. However the white keyboard of the B Series features an ergonomically optimized, generously sized palm rest support, guaranteeing comfortable operation even during prolonged use. The SPACEBAR and ENTER keys are of a generous enough size to allow fast typing. Two curved mouse buttons and the Touchpoint are responsive and ergonomic. Integrated QuickPoint Ideal for left-handers and right-handers alike, the integrated QuickPoint in the keyboard adds to the ergonomic features of the notebook. The QuickPoint is dirt-resistant and offers advanced functions such as scrolling. Quick Touch application buttons Quick Touch buttons are designed in order to make life a lot easier for a LIFEBOOK user. Just like on most of the electronic devices that are sold today, notebook users wanted some "hot buttons which they can use to launch an application or perform a task quickly. They can be used as shortcuts for launching your Web browser, E-mail and other applications. Using the same buttons you can protect your notebook against unauthorized access (Security Panel). Security Security is a crucial issue, especially in the notebook sector. Security must be guaranteed in several respects. Firstly, the notebook has to be protected against theft, as this is the number one risk, a method of protecting it from being stolen should have priority. The LIFEBOOK B Series can be protected against theft by using a Kensington MicroSaver, which is a 1.8 meter long, lockable, galvanized steel cable. Secondly we have to look at virus and networking protection. The world is online, every connected computer is a potential victim of a hacker or virus attack. To this effect, all notebooks of the LIFEBOOK family come with the F-secure virus scanner software. The software is delivered on the Driver and Utility CD-ROM provided with every LIFEBOOK. Thirdly access and data protection which are of utmost importance. As mobile computing becomes more and more accepted in the corporate market, valuable data stored on the notebook should be protected all the better, which can be achieved by different means. The LIFEBOOK B Series sports a unique SecurityPanel which requires the user to enter a PIN when the system is switched on, the same buttons can then be used as Quick Touch buttons for direct access to applications. With the 0Z711E1 PC Card controller of O2 Micro with integrated SmartCard controller all necessary components for SmartCard usage are integrated into the notebook. This means that when the notebook user would like to use a SmartCard in the PC Card slot, they only need a SmartCard Holder, an additional external SmartCard reader is not needed. While all preloaded operating systems are supported, Fujitsu Siemens encourages the use of Windows 2000, which is the first SmartCard-enabled OS from Microsoft. In order to provide an instant usability of this unique security offer, a Standard Security Kit is delivered as standard with your LIFEBOOK B Series. The Kit includes amongst others the SmartCard Holder which fits into the PC Card slot. A CD is enclosed, which includes not only drivers for the reader but also try&buy versions of diverse security software, valid for a period of 60 days. This includes authentication software, Password and Security Officer 2000 and SIMedit! 3.5 for administrating mobile phone cards. In addition to all of above components the German version will also include Starmoney, an award winning software for online banking. Starmoney enables use of the HBCI-standard, which greatly improves the security of the transactions and at the same time saves you the hassle of using PIN/TAN for each transaction. This package does not include any SmartCards, which are available as accessories, but with the supplied software you can start using your banking card or program your GSM Card. The internal reader is compatible with nearly all major SmartCard suppliers who comply with the PC/SC-norm ISO 7816 1-4. More Information on the Standard Security Kit and its content can be found on the Extranet under: http://extranet.fujitsu-siemens.com/pc/notebooks
The system can also be secured through the BIOS. The following standard security functions are provided: System and BIOS password Hard disk boot sector virus protection Hard disk password protection
Page 7 of 10 Manageability Many companies have a huge network which is highly complex and complicated to handle. In order to make the administrators life easier in terms of network management and administration of notebooks, the new B Series is equipped with intelligent mobile manageability tools. Results are noticeable in reduced Total Costs of Ownership of up to 30%, or even more, of the day-today operating costs. The mobile version of the manageability software DeskView contains the following modules. DeskInfo enables the user to get detailed information on the complete hardware configuration and to read notebookrelated information via DMI or WMI and view this data on screen or print it out. The information available includes general notebook information, technical information, service and dealer information, user-defined data and status of the notebook. DeskAlert detects hardware failures or changes by continuously monitoring the notebook system. DeskAlert handles events via local or remote pop-up window or entries in logfiles, displays the status of the HDD and issues a warning if certain threshold values are violated, which allows the replacement of the HDD before damage occurs. The HDD in the B Series supports S.M.A.R.T technology which is supported by DeskView. DeskOff enables you to switch the PC or the operating system on a PC into different operating modes. If supported by the PC, the following modes are possible: switch off the PC (PowerOff) shut down the operating system reboot the PC switch into the energy-saving mode (Standby) switch into the Hibernate mode log off the user PCs with Windows NT 4.0 can also be shut down and powered off with DeskOff. Under Windows for Home Use (Windows 9x, Me) the Hibernate mode action is not possible. Under Windows NT4, the energy-saving modes (standby, hibernation) are not supported. DeskOff supports a command line interface so it can be seamlessly integrated into batch jobs (a collection of commands executed one after the other). DeskWoL enables a notebook to be switched on via the network with "Wake On LAN" technology, it allows you to turn on one or more notebooks from an administrator workstation with a command to the LAN adapter ("magic packet"). If corresponding client management services are installed on the client, procedures and programs can be run automatically after switching on the client notebook. DeskView version 5.1 will be made available on the Manageability CD included with all notebooks as of end of August. Desktop Management Interface (DMI) DMI stands for Desktop Management Interface and is the standard interface for desktop management. DMI introduces transparency into the network, it is a technology developed to allow efficient management of PCs. If all PCs in the network are DMI-compatible, the network administrator can access the configuration data of every PC or Notebook from their desktop. Pre Execution Enhancement (PXE) PXE stands for Pre-Boot Execution Environment and is a specification which enables clients to interact with the network, in a pre-boot environment (with or without an operating system), so that they can automatically download the appropriate software images and configuration parameters to meet the needs of different types of users.
