Sound, small size Bit flimsy - not very robust; and operation a bit fiddly sound quality sonic stage software is rubbish it lets down a brilliant pice of equipment

Simply Brilliant but treat it gently I was so impressed with this recorder that I bought two. In order not to go over the other reviews. Sony mzrh1b Hi-MD Digital Player and Recorder Nice looks , Good sound , It does the job .... downside very limited to choice !

Getting started

Overview
When you connect a Sony MD deck* that includes a CONTROL A1 jack to your computer, you can use this software to operate the MD deck from the computer. In addition to the normal MD playback operations, you can: Edit MDs while viewing the computers display. Input disc names and track names using the computers keyboard. In addition, if you connect a Sony CD player** that includes a CONTROL A1 jack to the MD deck, you can also: Operate the CD player (playback) from the computer. Carry out drag and drop recording from a CD to an MD.
* Compatible models: MDS-JA20ES, MDS-JB920 ** Compatible models: CDP-CE525, CDP-CA80ES, CDP-CX57, CDP-CX220, CDP-CX260 The CONTROL A1 jacks of the MD deck and CD player must be connected using the CONTROL A1 connection cord (monaural mini plug cord) supplied with the CD player (or sold separately).

The latest information about this software can be found in the Readme.txt file installed on the hard disc with the MD Editor software. Please be sure to read this file.

System requirements

The following hardware and software are necessary to use the MD Editor software.
IBM PC/AT or compatibles Memory: 16 MB or more (32 MB or more is recommended.) Video board and display driver: VGA (pixels), 256 colors or more displayable. Hard disk space: 5 MB or more. CD-ROM drive Serial port: 1 or more OS: Microsoft Windows 95 (Microsoft Windows 3.1 and WindowsNT are invalid.) Video monitor: VGA (pixels), 256 colors or more displayable.
When using the timer to carry out recording and playback, please quit the MD Editor. When turning off the MD decks power, please quit the MD Editor. Do not use a 2 way LCD remote commander while this software is activated. If you connect components other than an MD deck and CD player that support this software using a CONTROL A1 connection cord, do not operate these components other than to adjust the volume while this software is activated, as this may cause the software to misoperate.

Preparation

Checking the supplied items
Check to make sure that you have received the following supplied items with the MD Editor. If anything is missing, please contact the shop where you purchased this unit or your nearest Sony dealer.

Connections

Connecting an MD deck to your computer
Connect a Sony MD deck that includes a CONTROL A1 jack to your computer using the provided connector and connection cord.

Connect the computers serial (RS-232C) port to the MD decks CONTROL A1 jack.
When your computer and the MD deck are separated by distance
Please use a connection cord such as RK-G34 (optional) (3 meters).
Please use the supplied connection cord and connector. Using a different type of connection cord or connector may result in damage. Please plug the cord in straight when connecting. Plugging the cord in at an angle may result in damage. Do not insert any metal objects into the connection jacks. Shorting may occur resulting in damage. Do not connect headphones to the CONTROL A1 jack. If connected, noise will be heard from the headphones and all CONTROL A1 functions will be inoperable.
Connecting a CD player to the MD deck

When you connect a Sony CD player (CDP-CE525, CDP-CA80ES, CDPCX57, CDP-CX220, CDP-CX260) that includes a CONTROL A1 jack to the MD deck, you can control the CD player together with the MD deck.
Be sure to follow the procedure below and connect the components correctly. If the connections are not correct, the CD operation screen will not appear. You can connect and operate only one CD player. When you connect a CD player, you cannot operate the computers internal or an external CD-ROM drive, etc. When using this software to operate the CD player from a computer, be sure that the CD players play mode is set to CONTINUE.

Connection method

For details of connection, please refer to the manual provided with each component. 1 Connect the CONTROL A1 jacks of the CD player and the MD deck using the CONTROL A1 connection cord supplied with the CD player (or an optional monaural mini plug cord). 2 Connect the digital (or analog) audio output jack on the CD player to the digital (or analog) audio input jack on the MD deck.
Note When carrying out drag and drop recording referring to the procedure described in Recording from a CD to an MD on page 26, be sure to connect the digital audio jacks using an optical cable. If you carry out drag and drop recording with the analog audio jacks connected, the signal may not be recorded properly.
3 Set the CD players command mode to 1.

Installing the software

Use this procedure to install the software onto your computers hard disc. Set the computer to the operation mode before proceeding.
Insert the supplied CD-ROM into the computer. Double-click on the CD-ROMs icon. The Setup icon appears. Double-click on the Setup icon to start installation. Carry out installation operation according to the messages that appear. Eject the CD-ROM when installation is finished.

About the Database file

Installing the software creates a folder called the Database folder. Because this software uses this folder, please do not erase, move, or change the contents of this folder.
Uninstalling the software
1 Select Start, Settings, Control Panel menu to open the control panel, and double click on the Add/Remove Program. 2 Select Install/Uninstall tag, select MD Editor Ver 1.1 and press Add/Remove. button. The dialog box appears. 3 Press Yes to uninstall the software. Uninstaller starts and the software deletes automatically.

Starting the software

Use this procedure to start up this software. Double click on the MD Editor icon. This software is activated. Registration of your name is only necessary the first time.

The following screen appears immediately after start up.
Setting up the serial port
Select SerialSetup from the option menu. Select COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4.
When this software is started up, all playback or editing operations in progress on the MD deck will be stopped. After this software has been started up, MD deck operation will not be possible using the MD decks controls or the remotes controls except for the 1/u switch. If you attempt to operate the MD deck, REMOTE appears in the MD decks display. To use the MD decks controls or the remotes controls, first quit this software and then turn the MD deck off and on. When this software is started up, the MD decks PLAY MODE will be automatically set to CONTINUE, and the repeat mode will be canceled. When this software is started up, please do not turn the MD deck off.

Editing recorded MDs

MD editing can easily be carried out using the computer. For a detailed explanation of functions, please refer to the MD deck operating instructions.
When this software is not used, and editing is carried out using the MD decks controls, be sure to select and execute Reload on the option menu once you have finished editing. If not executed, the actual content of the MD may differ from its displayed content.

Labeling recordings (NAME/TITLE function)
On the MD operation screen, move the cursor to the disc name or track name display column and click on it. Input the desired disc or track name. To input the other names continuously, press the Enter key on the computers keyboard after you once finish inputting the desired disc or track name. Next title display changes edit mode automatically, and you can input the other names.
You can only input the English alphabets, numbers and some symbols. If an MD encoded with the letters other than those above is played back, the correct letters will not be displayed. If the discs write protect tab is set to protect, character input, recording, editing etc., will not be possible. Slide the record-protect tab so that recording is possible. Symbols that can be input are as follows. !"#$%&'()*+,./:;<=>?@_` Symbols other than these will not be displayed.
Labeling recordings (continued) To input using the copy and paste function
You can input names by copying character strings which you have input and then pasting them in the desired location.
To use the text data input by other application (FLOW function)
If you input disc or track names beforehand using other text editing software, you can assign all names with one copy and paste operation.
Input the disc or track names by using other text editing softwares. Divide each name by pressing Enter key on the computers keyboard.
(ex.) disc name <enter> track 1 name <enter> track 2 name <enter> : track n name <enter>
Select all texts and copy it on the clipboard. Click the disc name or 1st track name display to enter edit mode. Select Paste from the edit menu. The text is assigned in order from the point where edit mode was entered.
Moving recorded tracks (MOVE function)
On the MD operation screen, click on the track number of the track that you wish to move. The track names color you clicked changes. More than one track cannot be moved. Click on on the operation panel. The MOVE dialog box appears.
Input the track number of the location you are moving the track to. Click OK. The selected track is moved to the designated location.
To cancel the MOVE function

Click Cancel.

To move a track during playback
1 During playback of the track you wish to move, click on on the operation panel. 2 Once the MOVE dialog box appears, carry out the operations in steps 3 and 4 above. If there is one other track selected during playback, that track will be moved.
To move a track by dragging
Drag and drop the track number of the track you want to move to the desired location.
Dividing recorded tracks (DIVIDE function)
During playback, click on on the operation panel at the point that you wish to divide the track. Rehearsal playback starts from the point clicked on and the DIVIDE dialog box appears.
Click on / and shift slowly. You can shift the divide point in 1 step = approximately 0.06 second increments. Rehearsal playback begins from the shift point. can also be dragged left or right for adjustment. Click OK when the divide point plays back correctly. The track is divided.
To cancel the DIVIDE function
Combining recorded tracks (COMBINE function)
On the MD operation screen, click on the track number of the tracks that you wish to combine. When you click on a track, that track and the track immediately before it will be combined. For example, to combine tracks 2 and 3, click only on track 3. Note that since there are no tracks before the lead track, you cannot combine tracks simply by clicking on the lead track. When tracks being joined are separated by distance, after clicking on the first track, click on the track to be joined while holding down the SHIFT key. Click on on the operation panel. The COMBINE dialog box appears, and rehearsal playback of the section where the tracks are joined begins.

Click on

to reverse the order of the tracks played back.
If the displayed tracks are correct, click OK. The selected tracks are joined.
To cancel the COMBINE function
To combine the track playing back with the track immediately in front of it
1 During playback of the track you want to combine, click on on the operation panel. 2 Once the COMBINE dialog box appears, carry out the operations from step 2 of Combining recorded tracks on this page. If there are one or two other tracks selected during playback, those selected tracks will be combined.

You cannot combine tracks with this operation when the lead track is being played back. You can only combine the track playing back with the track immediately in front of it.
Erasing a part of a track (A-B ERASE function)
During playback, click on on the operation panel at the start point you wish to erase (point A). Rehearsal playback up to the selected point begins and the A-B ERASE dialog box appears.
To adjust the position of point A, click on / of A. can also be dragged left or right for adjustment. You can adjust the position in 1 step = approximately 0.06 second increments.
Click OK when the point A is playing back correctly. Continue playback, or press the or button to go to the point where you want the erase to stop (point B), and click OK. The point B is temporarily set. Rehearsal playback with points A and B connected begins.
To adjust the position of point B, click on / of B. can also be dragged left or right for adjustment. You can adjust the position in 1 step = approximately 0.06 second increments.
Click OK when the point B is playing back correctly. The specified A-B section is erased.
To cancel the A-B ERASE function

Operation Note

Erased tracks can not be recalled.
On the MD operation screen, click on the track number of the track that you wish to erase. When selecting more than one track, click on the numbers while holding down the SHIFT key.
When erasing all tracks, do one of the following:
Click on all tracks after pressing SHIFT. Select Select all on the editing menu. Click on the MD disc icon.
Click on on the operation panel. The ERASE dialog box appears.
Click OK if it is ok to erase the track(s). The selected track(s) is erased.

To erase a track that is playing back
1 During playback of the track you want to erase, click on on the operation panel. 2 Once the ERASE dialog box appears, carry out the operation in step 3 on page 23. If there are other tracks selected during playback, those selected tracks will be erased.

To erase by dragging to

Select the track you want to erase, and drag and drop it in on the operation panel. Erasing of one track at a time, more than one track, or all tracks is possible. All tracks can be erased by selecting the MD disc icon and then dragging and dropping.

Printing MD labels

Up to 20 names on the disc name and track name lists on the MD operation screen can be printed out as MD labels. The track list for a disc with 10 tracks or less will be printed out as one column, and the list for a disc with 11 to 20 tracks will be printed out as 2 columns. Before printing, make sure that a printer is connected to your computer.

Load paper for label printing in the printer. Select Label Print on the file menu. The printing dialog box appears. Follow the procedure for printing. Please use the procedure for regular printing.
Printing is not possible on labels included with discs.
Assigning names to CDs (NAME function)
CD disc and track names can be input, and CD-TEXT information can be displayed using the computers keyboard.
On the CD operation screen, move the cursor to the disc name or track name display column and click on it. Input the desired name.
Input names are stored in the Database folder on the computers hard disc. Names are not stored in or displayed on the CD player. If you assign a name to a disc with CD-TEXT information, the assigned name will be erased and the original CD-TEXT name will be restored when you execute Reload on the option menu for that disc. If the CD in the CD player is replaced, be sure to execute Reload on the option menu after replacement.
Recording from a CD to an MD
You can record on an MD simply by dragging the track from the CD operation screen and dropping it onto the MD operation screen. When recording by this method, please connect the MD deck to the CD player using an optical cable.
Correct recording is not possible from a CD-R disc. During drag and drop recording, you can only carry out operations on the MD operation screen.
Select Open CD window on the file menu to open the CD operation screen and display the track that you wish to record.

When a CD changer is connected: Click on and select the desired CD. Up to 5 CD operation screens can be opened.
Drag the track number of the track that you wish to record, and drop it onto the MD operation screen. The selected track becomes the designated track for recording, and the recording pause mode is engaged.

Dragging the CD disc icon and dropping it onto the MD operation screen will set all tracks on that CD as designated recording tracks.
When there are more tracks that you wish to record, repeat step 2. A warning appears if the tracks dont fit onto 1 MD. Click on or.
appears, Now Rec flashes, and recording begins.
To remove tracks from the designated track list
1 During recording pause, click on the track that you want to remove from the designated track list. The clicked track changes to inverted display. To remove more than one track at once, click on the tracks while holding down the SHIFT key.
2 Click on on the MD operation screen. The tracks selected in step 1 above are removed from the list.
Tracks already recorded onto the MD cannot be erased by this method. To erase already recorded tracks, use the MD editing ERASE function.

To stop recording

Click on.
Programming the CD tracks
Tracks on a CD can be programmed to playback in the order that you like. This is done by simply dragging the track number from the CD operation menu and dropping it onto the PLAY LIST screen.
Select Program window from the CD operation screens file menu. The PLAY LIST screen appears.

Drag the track numbers from the CD operation screen and drop them onto the PLAY LIST screen in the order that you want to hear them. The tracks are added to the program in the position that they are dropped.
The track order can also be changed by dragging and dropping within the PLAY LIST screen. Dragging and dropping the CD disc icon onto the PLAY LIST screen will program all tracks on the CD.
Click on Playback starts.

To stop program playback

To remove selected tracks from the program
1 In the stop mode, click on the track that you want to remove. 2 Click on on the operation panel. The tracks selected in step 1 above are removed from the program. Removing many tracks at one time is also possible. When selecting more than one track, click on the tracks while holding down the SHIFT key.
To view details of the programmed tracks
Click on at the bottom left of the PLAY LIST screen. To return to the original screen, click again.
During program playback, operation of MD operation and CD operation screens is not possible.

Changing the disc icons

You can use pictures (BMP format) made using other applications as disc icons on the MD and CD operation screens.
Copy the picture you want to paste to the clipboard. Only BMP format is available. Click the disc icon on the MD window to select it. Select Paste Jacket from the edit menu. The picture on the clipboard is displayed on the disc icon. Click a place other than the disc icon to unselect it.
To turn back the original disc icon
1 Click the MD window's disc icon to select it. 2 Select Cut Jacket from the edit menu. The icon is deleted and the original icon appears on the disc icon. 3 Click a place other than the disc icon to unselect it.

Quitting the software

Select Quit on the file menu.

Troubleshooting
If you experience any of the following difficulties while using this software, use this troubleshooting guide to remedy the problem. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer. Please also refer to your computers manual, as well as the Readme.txt file installed on the hard disc with the MD Editor software. Problem
Communication port can not be opened message appears. No screen response or screen error.

Cause/countermeasure

Another application may be using the serial port. / Quit the other application. The computer may be damaged. / Start up another application often used and check if computer functions properly. / After uninstalling (page 10), try re-installing. The discs protect tab may be set for write protect. / Slide the tab so that recording is possible. / Character input, recording, editing, etc., are not possible on commercial playback MDs (prerecorded MDs). Check that cables are connected properly (page 8). / Check that SerialSetup has been done properly (page 11). / Disconnect connection cables and then reconnect them. / Select Reload from Option menu and execute this mode.
Character input, recording, editing etc., can not be done.

Use this procedure to install this software onto your computers hard disc. Set the computer to the operation mode before proceeding.

Insert the supplied CD-ROM into the computer. The MD Editor2 & PictureGear Label Maker Set Up dialog box appears. If the dialog box does not appear, double-click Install in the CDROM folder.

Click Set up MD Editor 2. Follow the instructions that appear in the display to install the application. Click Finish. Control returns to the MD Editor2 & PictureGear Label Maker Set Up dialog box.
A folder is created as a result of the installation. This folder is used by the software. Do not erase, move, or change its contents.
Installing the Label Maker
When installing version 4.0 of PictureGear Label Maker, if an older version already exists in your computer, the older version will be overwritten by version 4.0.
Click Set up PictureGear Label Maker in the MD Editor2 & PictureGear Label Maker Set Up dialog box. Follow the instructions that appear in the display to install the application.
If you restarted your computer by selecting Yes, I want to restart my computer now in the dialog box that appeared at the end of the Label Maker installation, you should double-click Install in the CD-ROM folder to set up the on-line manual or install the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Setting up the On-line Manual
English version of on-line manual is automarically installed when you install MD Editor 2. To install another language version, do the procedure below to overwrite the English version with the language version that you select.
Select the language in the MD Editor2 & PictureGear Label Maker Set Up dialog box. Click Set up the on-line manual. Follow the instructions that appear in the display to set up the online manual.
Installing the Adobe Acrobat Reader
You must install the Adobe Acrobat Reader in your computer in order to open the on-line manual.
Click Set up Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 [English]. Follow the instructions that appear in the display to install the application.
After you have completed installation, click EXIT and remove the CD-ROM.
Uninstalling the software
If you do not need the MD Editor 2, Label Maker, or Adobe Acrobat Reader, uninstall the software as follows:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box appears. Select and click MD Editor 2, PictureGear Label Maker 4.0, or Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 from the program list below. Click Add/Remove. The Confirm File Deletion dialog box appears. Click Yes. Uninstaller starts up and the software selected in step 3 is deleted automatically.
If you uninstalled the Label Maker from the computer in which the PictureGear software is already installed, it become impossible to print labels through the PictureGear as well. If this happens, uninstall the PictureGear, and then reinstall it.

Starting up the software

If the softwares listed below are already installed in your computer, do not start them up while the MD Editor 2 is active. Softwares for controlling the MD deck

CD to MD Window

To show the CD to MD Window, click the CD to MD icon on the Tool Bar. Use this window to record from a CD in the CD player to an MD in the MD deck.

To show the PC CD to MD Window, click the PC CD to MD icon on the Tool Bar. Use this window to record from a CD in the CD-ROM drive to an MD in the MD deck.

Quitting the software

/ Click on the Main Bar (page 9).
The message How do you quit MD Editor2 ? appears in the display. Click Power OFF if you want to turn the MD decks power off as quitting, Exit if you want to leave the MD decks power on, or Cancel if you want to cancel quitting.

Show the MD Bar. Click Track number/Track name display on the MD Bar. A list of tracks in the MD appears. Click the track you want to play from the track list box. Playback starts at the track you clicked.
Listening to an MD using the MD Window
Open the MD Window. A list of tracks in the MD appears. Click the track number of the track you want to play from the Track Name display. Double-clicking the track number starts the playback of the track. Click in the MD Window (valid only when you clicked a track number in step 2). Playback starts at the track you clicked in step 2.

Assigning names to MDs

You can only input alphanumeric characters and the following symbols: !"#$%&'()*+,./:;<=>?@_` If an MD encoded with the letters other than those above is played back, the correct letters will not be displayed. If the discs write protect tab is set to protect, character input, recording, editing etc., will not be possible. Slide the record-protect tab so that recording is possible.
Assigning a disc (or track) name
Open the MD Window. Click Disc Name display (or Track Name display) on the MD (or track) to which you want to assign a name. You are ready to enter disc (or track) names. Input the desired name. You can cut and paste an existing string using the menu which appears when you right-click in the edit mode. Press the Enter key. The disc (or track) name you entered is saved and you are ready to enter another track name.

To use the text data input by other application
If you input track name beforehand using other text editing software, you can assign all names with one copy and paste operation.
Input the track name by using other text editing softwares. Delimit each name by pressing the Enter key on the computers keyboard. (ex.) track 3 name <Enter> track 4 name <Enter> track 5 name <Enter> : track 8 name <Enter> Select all text and copy it into the clipboard. The actions you must take in this step varies according to the text editing software you use. For the procedure to copy text, refer to the instruction manual for the text editing software. Click the Track Name display on the track to which you want to assign a name. You are ready to enter track names. Click the third track name if you entered track names as shown in (ex.). Select Paste from the displayed edit menu by right-clicking. The track names are pasted in the same way as they are entered with the text editing software. In the example given above, from the third track name to the eighth track name are entered in the same way as they are entered with the text editing software.
More than 255 letters cannot be input in a track.
Recording from a CD to an MD
If the discs write protect tab is set to protect, character input, recording, editing, etc., will not be possible. Slide the record-protect tab so that recording is possible. Before recording, click all the MD icons to be recorded. The TOC information necessary for recording will be read. You cannot click any icon on the Tool Bar while the MD Editor 2 is recording on an MD. To stop recording, click the Stop button.
Adjust the recording level on the MD deck. For details, see the operating instructions supplied with the MD deck. When recording from a CD in the CD-ROM drive, you must first make the proper settings for the playback devices and playback volume. For details see Settings for recording from a CD in the CD-ROM drive on page 29. Open the CD to MD or PC CD to MD Window (page 22). The tracks on the MD and CD appear in each window. During connection of a Sony CD changer with CONTROL A1 (or CONTROL A1) jacks Click the CD you want to play in the Disc Name display.

Drag the track number of a track you want to record from the Track Name display in the CD or PC CD Window and drop it into the Track Name display or Disc Name display in the MD Window. When dragging and dropping a track to the Track Name display or Disc Name display in the MD Window for the first time, a dialog box showing the selected input selector appears. Check that the correct one is selected. The dropped track is shown in red in the Track Name display or Disc Name display in the MD Window as a candidate for recording. Repeat step 3 if you have another track you want to record. You can also select two or more tracks at a time by clicking the desired track numbers while holding down the Ctrl key. To select all tracks in the CD as candidates, drag and drop the CD disc icon (pages 17, 21) into the Track name display or Disc Name display in the MD Window.

To move a track during playback
1 Open the MD Window (page 12). 2 Playback the track you want to move (page 24). 3 Click on the MD operation panel. The MOVE dialog box appears. To cancel the MOVE function, click.
Note Check the track you are going to move in the MOVE dialog box.
4 Select the track number of the location you are moving the track to. 5 Click. The track in playback moves to the designated location.
To deselect a track, click at a blank background in the MD Window. For example, click below the ERASE (trash) button on the MD operation panel.
Dividing recorded tracks (DIVIDE function)
Open the MD Window (page 12). Playback the track you want to divide (page 24). During playback, click on the MD operation panel at the position where you want to divide the track. The position is temporarily set. The DIVIDE dialog box appears, and rehearsal playback starts from the position you clicked.
To cancel the DIVIDE function, click
Adjust the position to divide. Click / in the DIVIDE dialog box. You can shift the dividing position in 1 step (= approximately 0.06 second) increments and can also drag to the left or right for adjustment. Rehearsal playback starts from the shifted position. Click when the rehearsal playback proves satisfactory. The track is divided.
Combining recorded tracks (COMBINE function)
Open the MD Window (page 12). Select two tracks you want to combine from MD Window. Click the track number of the first track, then, while holding down the Ctrl key, click the track number of the latter track.
Note You can select a track and the subsequent track by proceeding to step 3 immediately after selecting one track.
Click on the MD operation panel. The COMBINE dialog box appears. At the same time, the last 2-second part of the first track and the first 2-second part of the latter track are put together, and starts a rehearsal playback of approximately 4 seconds.
To cancel the COMBINE function, click
If the indicated track order is found incorrect, transpose the tracks by clicking or restart the steps starting at step 2 after clicking.

If the displayed tracks are correct, click. The selected tracks are joined. The name of the first track becomes the name of the new track.
Combining the track in playback and the immediately following track
1 Open the MD Window (page 12). 2 Playback the first track (page 24). 3 Click on the MD operation panel. The COMBINE dialog box appears. At the same time, the last 2-second part of the first track and the first 2-second part of the latter track are put together, and starts a rehearsal playback of approximately 4 seconds. To cancel the COMBINE function, click. If the indicated track order is found incorrect, transpose the tracks by clicking or restart the steps starting at step 2 after clicking.
4 If the displayed tracks are correct, click. The selected tracks are joined. The name of the first track becomes the name of the new track.
To deselect a track, click at a blank background in the MD Window. For example, click below the ERASE (trash) button on the MD operation panel. You cannot combine the track in playback with any track other than the one that immediately follows the current track.
Erasing a part of a track (A-B ERASE function)
Open the MD Window (page 12). Playback the track of which you want to erase a part (page 24).

the playback of the part you want to erase starts (point A). The starting point (point A) is temporarily set. The A-B ERASE dialog box appears and starts the rehearsal playback of approximately 2 seconds up to point A.
To cancel the A-B ERASE function, click
Adjust the position of point A. Click / in the A-B ERASE dialog box. You can adjust the position in 1 step (= approximately 0.06 second) increments and can also drag to the left or right for adjustment. After the adjustment, click. Playback then starts at point A. Continue playback, or click or to go to the point where you want the erase to stop (point B), and click. The ending point (point B) is temporarily set. Then the 2-second part up to point A and the 2-second part from point B are put together, and a rehearsal playback of approximately 4 seconds starts. Adjust the position of point B. Click / in the A-B ERASE dialog box. You can adjust the position in 1 step (= approximately 0.06 second) increments and can also drag to the left or right for adjustment. After the adjustment, click. The specified A-B part is erased.

Erasing recordings (ERASE function)
Erased tracks cannot be recalled.
Open the MD Window (page 12). Click the track number of the track you want to erase from the Track Name display in the MD Window. When selecting more than one track, click the numbers while holding down the Ctrl key. To erase all tracks, click the MD disc icon (page 14). To erase the current track, skip to step 3, selecting no track.
Click on the MD operation panel. The ERASE dialog box appears.
To cancel the ERASE function, click
If it is ok to erase the track(s), click. The selected track(s) is erased. The current track is erased if no track is selected.

To erase by dragging to

1 Open the MD Window (page 12). 2 Click the track number of the track you want to erase from the Track Name display in the MD Window. Names assigned to a CD are stored on the computer's hard disc. Those names appear in the display on MD Editor 2 when the CD is inserted. Do the procedure below to assign names to a CD in the CD-ROM drive or CD player.
Open the CD or PC CD Window. Click Disc Name display (or Track Name display) on the CD (or track) to which you want to assign a name. During connection of a Sony CD changer with CONTROL A1 (or CONTROL A1) jacks Click the CD you want to name in the Disc Name display. You are brought into the edit mode in which you can enter disc (or track) names.
Input the desired name. You can cut and paste an existing string using the menu which appears when you right-click in the edit mode. Press the Enter key. The disc (or track) name you entered is saved and you are ready to enter another track name.
Assigned names on a CD are stored in the folder on the computers hard disc. Names appear in the display unless you click the Reload button. Assigned names on a CD are stored in the folder on the computers hard disc. Do not erase, move, or change the contents of this folder. You can view the names you entered here are only from the MD Editor 2; they are not reflected in the CD player. The names you entered from the CD player (Disc memo) are shown only on the CD players display and not reflected in the MD Editor 2. If you assign a name to a CD to which a CD text is assigned, you cannot see the CD text information in the MD Editor 2. To show the CD text information, click the Reload button in the CD or PC CD Window. The disc and track names assigned to the CD disappear when you click the Reload button. CD text information appears in the display only when the connected CD player supports CD text. CD text is not displayed when the CD is inserted in the CD-ROM drive, even the drive supports CD text. When you replace a CD in the CD-ROM drive with a new one, the name of the previous CD will continue to be displayed. Click the Reload button to display the name of the newly inserted disc.

Creating labels

About the Label Maker
This chapter explains how to create MD labels using the supplied PictureGear Label Maker software. To create and print labels, you must first install the PictureGear Label Maker (page 5).
Do not attach labels near the disc shutter, or at any other place not specifically designated for label attachment. Be sure to position the label inside the recessed area reserved for labels. The shape of the recessed area will vary from disc to disc.
Starting up the Label Maker
There are two ways to activate the Label Maker. Click on the MD Window. Double-click PicLabel placed on the folder shown below. X drive Program files Sony PictureGear 3.2 Goodies
X drive is a name of the hard disc.
Creating labels with Label Maker
You can create labels with graphics or text for MDs and other media.
Display the MD Window. Click to activate the Label Maker. A template of an MD label appears in the main display. The disc and track names that are currently displayed in the MD Window appear on the MD label. If you want to print the label with this information go to step 9. To adjust the display size Select the zoom magnification from the drop-down list in the main window. To select another template Click Open Template in the File menu. The Open Template dialog box appears. Select the file and click Open to display the template in the main window. The templates below can be selected: 3.5-inch floppy disk, 3.5-inch MO disk, Hi8/8mm video cassette, CD-R, DV, Memory stick, MD, Mini DV, VHS video cassette, Audio cassette
Click Add Image in the File menu. The Add Image dialog box appears. Select the file containing the image that you want, and then click Open. The main window appears again with image in the image palette on the right.

Place the image. Drag the desired image from the image palette onto the label creation area.
To place images automatically Select the images and click Autocopy in the Edit menu. The image is pasted into the template area without changing the aspect ratio. To make images round or square Select the image in the label creation area and click Round or Square in the Edit menu. You can change the size of an image in the label creation area but not the size of an image in the template area.

10 Quit the Label Maker.

Click Exit in the File menu or click the close button in the top right corner of the window.

Additional Information

Troubleshooting
If you experience any of the following difficulties while using this software, use this troubleshooting guide to remedy the problem. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer. Please also refer to your computers manual, as well as the Readme.txt file installed on the hard disc with the software. Problem The message Communication port cannot be opened. appears. The message Port not registered in System was used. appears. Cause/countermeasure Another application may be using the serial port. n Quit the other application. You selected a port that is not available on your computer during serial port setup. n Select a valid port while referring to the instruction manual for your computer. The connector from the computer adapter is not connected properly to the serial port of the computer, or connected to a port that is not selected during serial port setup. n Check the connector for normal connection. The monaural (2P) mini-plug cord from the computer connector is not connected properly to the MD deck, or MD deck power cord is not connected to a power outlet. n Check the monaural (2P) mini-plug cord for normal connection. n Make sure that the power cord from the MD deck is connected to a power outlet. n Turn the power of the MD deck off and on, and then restart the MD Editor 2. n Start up another application often used and check if computer functions properly. n After uninstalling (page 6), try re-installing (page 4). The discs protect tab may be set for write protect. n Slide the tab so that recording is possible. The MD may probably be a commercial playbackonly MD (an MD with prerecorded tracks). n Character input, recording, editing, etc., are not possible on commercial playback MDs.
The message Cord Connection Error appears.
No screen response or screen error.
Character input, recording, editing etc., cannot be done.
Problem The MD deck does not respond as a whole.
Cause/countermeasure n Check the cables are connected properly. n Check that Serial Setup has been done properly (page 8). n Disconnect cables of the connector and then reconnect them. n Click the Reload button (pages 12, 16, 20). n Restart the MD Editor 2. n Check that the audio connecting cord is correctly connected. n Check that the settings for the devices in the Volume Control window are correct (page 29). n Check that the audio connecting cord is correctly connected. Displayed name of MD or CD does not match the discs data. Recording from a CD in the CDROM drive to an MD in the MD deck cannot be done.
Sound from the MD in the MD deck connected to the LINE IN jacks of a computer is not output from the computers speakers.
