To install an add-on card
Shut down your computer and turn off all peripheral devices, such as your printer. Unplug your computer and any peripheral devices. Remove the side panel. Locate an available expansion slot. Remove the slot cover's screw, and then remove the slot cover.
When removing a slot cover, be careful not to damage components on the system board or add-on cards. You may need to temporarily remove add-on cards or other components that may be next to the slot cover you want to remove.
Removing the slot cover
Install the add-on card by inserting it into the expansion slot and secure it with the screw from the expansion slot cover.
Installing an add-on card
Attach any internal cables that the card requires. See the instructions supplied with the add-on card. Replace the side panel. See Replacing the Side Panel on page 26. Reconnect all peripheral devices and the power cord, and then turn on the computer.
Installing an Add-On Card
Remove the side panel (see Removing the Side Panel on page 24). Locate an available expansion slot. Remove the slot cover adjacent to the selected slot (see Removing a Slot Cover on page 42). Insert the add-on card into the PCI slot. Use a gentle rocking motion, pressing down until the card is fully seated.
Align the card's bracket so that the bottom of the bracket fits into the slot at the
bottom of the chassis. Assure that the top of the bracket fits snugly against the chassis lip after the card is fully inserted.
Installing a PCI add-on card (PCV-RX series model)
Replace the screw that secures the card. Attach any necessary cables to the card (see the instructions that came with the add-on card). Replace the side panel (see Replacing the Side Panel on page 26). Turn on the computer and follow any instructions that came with the add-on card.
Replacing the Lithium Battery
You may need to replace the lithium battery if your computer consistently loses the date or time settings after it is turned off. The lithium battery has a typical life of three years, after which the battery may be too weak to power the CMOS memory.
Do not handle damaged or leaking batteries. The lithium battery may explode if mistreated. Do not disassemble it or dispose of it in fire. When you remove the lithium battery, all values stored in the CMOS memory (BIOS setup values and Plug and Play values) may be lost. Although the computer can hold the charge for a short time while replacing the battery, it is safer to assume that the settings will be lost. When the values are lost, the BIOS values revert to their factory-default settings (see Accessing the BIOS Setup Utility on page 16).
Reboot your computer by selecting Shut Down. from the Start menu, and then selecting Restart. If the error message Error: Check date and time settings appears during the reboot sequence, press F2 during the reboot process to access the BIOS Setup Utility. Otherwise it is not necessary to replace the battery at this time, and you can skip all remaining steps. Compare all the BIOS options to their default settings (see CMOS Setup Options on page 57). Make a list of all the BIOS options that are different from their default values. Refer to this list when you restore the BIOS settings later. Select Exit Discarding Changes from the main menu using the right arrow key. Press Enter, type Y when prompted to discard changes, then press Enter to exit the BIOS Setup Utility. Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord. Remove the side panel (see Removing the Side Panel on page 24).
If necessary, remove any add-on cards to gain access to the battery. You may also need to disconnect some cables.
Touch any exposed metal part of chassis to discharge static electricity in your body before handling an add-on card or other sensitive electronic component.
Use a small flathead screwdriver or your finger to push in (not down) against the small tab at one end of the battery holder to release the battery.
Installing a lithium battery (PCV-RX series model)
Push the tab in (not down) to release the battery
Gently lift out the battery and dispose of it properly. Insert the new battery into the battery holder, with the plus (+) side up, and press down until the battery is secure.
The Sony CR2032 battery is recommended. Using a type of battery other than a
CR2032 may present a risk of fire or explosion.
Replace any add-on cards that were removed. Reconnect any cables that were disconnected. Replace the side panel (see Replacing the Side Panel on page 26). Reconnect the power cord and turn on the computer.
If the error message Error: Check date and time settings. appears during the reboot sequence, press F2 during the reboot process to access the BIOS Setup Utility. If no error message displays, the computers BIOS settings were retained during the battery replacement and you can skip the remaining steps. Refer to the list you made in step 3 and restore any non-default BIOS settings (see CMOS Setup Options on page 57). Select Exit Saving Changes from the main menu using the right arrow key. Press Enter, type Y when prompted to discard changes, then press Enter to exit the BIOS Setup Utility. The computers BIOS settings are now restored.
Removing a Memory Module
You may need to remove a memory module if you change the memory configuration or replace a bad module. By default, your computers memory sockets are filled with DDR-DIMM modules.
Remove the side panel (see Removing the Side Panel on page 24).
Remove the power supply to access the memory modules underneath.*
Remove the power supply (see Removing the Power Supply (PCV-RX series models) on page 49).*

Installing Memory Modules
Your system supports PC2700 DDR-SDRAM memory modules. The DDR-DIMM memory modules can be single- or double-sided and installed in either socket.
Choose the size of the memory module and configuration as shown in the following table. Memory modules can vary in size and speed between sockets. The minimum memory size is 128 MB. The maximum memory size is 1.0 GB. The BIOS automatically detects the type, size and speed of the memory modules.
Memory module configurations (MB)* DIMM1 0, 128, 256, 512 DIMM2 0, 128, 256, 512
* Your computer ships with at least 512 MB of memory and is expandable to 1.0 GB. Your model may ship with more than 512 MB SDRAM depending on the configuration you purchased.
Use only PC2700 memory. Your system does not support EDO, buffered DDR-SDRAM, or PC100/133 SDRAM memory.
