Sony RDR-GX700
Jason Glenn falls in love with Sonys gorgeous new DVD recorder
ONYS NEW DVD RECORDER IS A substantial piece of kit, considerably bigger than many DVD recorders, but it is beautiful as well as big, and the thought that has gone into the styling is evident in the remote control as well. You would expect something special, of course, for 500. There are DVD recorders on sale for less than half the money so this model will really have to deliver. It starts well, with an excellent complement of sockets, both front and rear. At the front are the usual hook-ups for camcorder enthusiasts. There is a DV input, S-video and composite video sockets and stereo audio inputs. At the rear are component video outs, good for progressive scan signals, as well as a pair of Scarts offering RGB input and output.

The RGB input is crucial and is (bafflingly) left out of some DVD recorders. It means you can enjoy the highest quality input signal from a set-top box, so that your recordings of digital broadcasts can theoretically approach perfection. S-video and composite video sockets are joined by optical and electrical digital audio sockets, with stereo options rounding off a most impressive list. Most DVD decks are from one camp or another either DVD-R or DVD+R. Sony prefers to offer dual-format functionality. You can record on to DVD-R, DVD-RW (in video or VR modes), DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. The RW VR option is useful if you fancy a little tricky editing. The other formats are extremely limited in this area. The problem with VR discs is that they are not widely compatible with existing DVD players, so sharing the recordings youve worked so hard on may not always be possible. Sonys recording modes cover the usual 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6hr capacities, but you also have a 90min option (HSP mode). There is an inevitable trade-off between capacity and picture quality that usually makes anything over the 3hr setting a questionable choice, but well see how the Sony does in this respect.
Getting a recorder up and running can be a bothersome process, but Sony has hit on a wonderful idea to make it painless the onscreen displays are so gorgeously designed, and fade in and out of view so luxuriously, that you may find yourself tinkering around with the setup long after youre ready to roll. Available functions are standard. For editing, you can erase titles or parts of a title and give titles a name. Erasing titles only frees up disc space on RW and +RW discs. On VR mode RW discs you can do a bit more, such as insert new scenes in the middle of an existing title. You can also create a playlist of chapters or titles, specifying a playing order. In this way you can change the way a disc plays back without altering the original content. Chapter marks are laid down automatically during recording, but on VR discs you again have more options, being able to add and delete them wherever you want. A rather nifty function is the video record equaliser, which lets you adjust picture parameters for the source signal before you record it on disc. Adjustments are available for contrast, colour and brightness. The same equaliser (plus a hue control) is available for your playback image, and you also
get chrominance, luminance and clock noise reduction controls, while a digital video enhancer boosts sharpness. VR discs score again in their playback facilities. They offer chasing playback (also seen on HDDs and DVD-RAM discs), allowing you to watch the beginning of a recording while the programme itself is still being recorded. You can also watch an existing programme on a DVD-RW VR disc while recording another one. There is no satellite control function, but if your satellite receiver has a built-in timer you can set the RDR-GX700 to record as soon as it senses a signal from the receiver. Once you have made some recordings on a disc the disc info function becomes very useful. It tells you what you have on the disc and how much space you have remaining. In this mode you can also protect the disc against accidental erasure, or finalise it for use on other DVD players. Performance is split into two categories. Playback is simply wonderful. This is one of those DVD images that transcends the two-dimensional limitations of the TV screen by creating such a vivid picture that an artificial sense of depth is created.
Colours are sumptuous and well defined, skin tones are perfect and there are bags and bags of fine detail. DVD soundtracks are also wonderful when played back through a good amp and speaker system. DVD recordings also have the ability to impress hugely. In the 1hr mode a perfect picture is captured,

indistinguishable from the original. This makes this deck a real contender for serious archiving. The 3 and 4hr-modes do not do such a good job, seeing a lot of degradation in the image. The 6hr mode introduces a haze of artifacts that spoil the picture, with movement looking a little jerky. Also deserving criticism is the editing on this deck. Smooth transitions are created by other models, but the Sony introduces a freeze frame at the edit point that will really put off camcorder users who want to polish their footage. Still, this remains a first-class picture provider and a recorder of the highest quality at lower-capacity settings and as such it deserves an audition.

TV Guide Page
Some broadcast systems ensure a Teletext service* in which the complete programmes and their data (title, date, channel, recording start time, etc.) are stored day by day. A TV guide page corresponds to each day of the week. When recording a programme, the recorder automatically takes the programme name from the Teletext pages and stores it as the title name. The TV guide page numbers depend entirely on the broadcast itself and may be subject to change. If so, you may have to set those TV guide page numbers manually in the TV Guide Page menu.
* Not available in some areas.
Press the number buttons or </M/m/, to enter the TV guide page number, and press ENTER to confirm the setting. If you make a mistake, press CLEAR to reenter the correct number. To set or change another TV guide page number, repeat steps 3 and 4 above.
z Hint To view Teletext information on your TV screen during a broadcast, switch to your TVs tuner by pressing t (TV/video).
