STRDB1080 RECEIVER
STRDB1080 / QS Series Home Cinema Receiver The STRDB1080 combines all the outstanding qualities of Sonys legendary QS Series with an extensive and advanced range of home cinema features. The QS Series raises the bar in terms of HiFi build quality, reducing noise and enhancing audio performance. Those QS features found in the STRDB1080 include a rigid chassis, slant mounted PC board and SF heat sinks. In keeping with the QS audiophile tradition, the STRDB1080 has analogue direct modes with digital shut down for clean analogue amplification when listening to high quality sources such as SACD. For the cinephile, the STRDB1080 features 6.1 channel processing to deliver the latest Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES 6.1 (Matrix and Discrete) encoded movies. In addition it supports DPLII, DTS Neo: 6 and is the first QS STRDB1080

receiver in the Sony range to incorporate DTS 96/24 playback. A comprehensive suite of EQ control options provide maximum flexibility in tailoring a perfectly balanced sound field. These include night mode, front reverb control and virtual speaker, wall material compensation and bass, middle and treble turnover frequency control. Other notable features include A, B or A+B speaker modes to provide for versatile playback in more than one room, On Screen Display (OSD) and a backlit programmable multi-brand remote for convenient control over many ancillary AV components.

ES & QS RECEIVER TECHNOLOGY
Linear Rap Core Transformer The ES series uses a more efficient, pin-type linear rap core transformer Sonys ES and QS Series The Extremely high Standard (ES) series represents the benchmark for excellence in Sony HiFi. ES components are designed and built to exacting quality standards, using the best materials and technology available, to deliver an uncompromising audio experience. Quality Standard (QS) components borrow heavily from the ES technology base. Notable for their rigid construction, use of high quality materials and finishes (like aluminium front panels), and innovative componentry (such as slanted PC boards to remove standing waves), QS components represent outstanding value for money. The quality of the underlying technology typifies the attention to detail and quality that is the hallmark of QS and ES components. ES and QS series HiFi components use an extruded aluminium SF Heat Sink to disperse heat from the amplification circuits. Each fin on the sink has a rib positioned at a different distance from the base. In profile, it creates a wave shape. This design feature prevents the fins from resonating at the same frequency (a problem than can occur with conventional heat sinks as a result of vibration). The effect is a cleaner, more natural sound reproduction. UK Sound Tuned Select Sony HiFi components are tuned with the assistance of UK HiFi experts. This ensures they meet the exacting standards of neutrality and imaging demanded by discerning audiophiles. Large Pellet MOSFET Output Transformers The performance characteristics of a transistor can change depending on the amount of heat it generates. When larger pellets are used, the amount of heat dissipated per given surface area is decreased. Moreover, heat dissipation efficiency is much greater. Therefore, sudden temperature increases are effectively minimised for even, stable performance. The result is richer bass, while minimal heat modulation contributes to clearer mid-range and high-frequency accuracy. SF Heat Sinks to drive amplifier power. Not only does it ensure sufficient power during large musical peaks, but superior linearity to deliver finely detailed low-level musical passages and tonal nuances. The transformer core features a large cross section to handle high power capacities. And because the magnetic strain and flux are quite small, signals within the amplifier are not distorted. Pin-type transformers also make for highly stable connections, further contributing to sound quality.
Large Electrolytic Capacitors ES and QS series components feature a pair of oversized, high power electrolytic condensers (capacitors) that maximise the distance between the outer casing and element to ensure a more even current flow across the entire condenser foil. The result is more power and reproduction of lower frequencies with a good sense of speed.
High Precision DSP Decoder The CXD-9718 decoder represents the next generation in Sony 32-bit DSP decoders, with more memory and faster processing speeds for more accurate decoding. The result is superb resolution to achieve the highest performance in audio applications. (Featured in STRVA333ES).
Discrete Amplifier Stages for each Channel Both Sonys ES and QS AV receivers use equal power, fully discrete power amplifiers for all amplification channels. Each channel uses discrete output devices with aluminium heat sinks. The result is a highcurrent output stage that can drive the low-impedance loads common among home theatre systems. And this, in turn, translates to theatre-like dynamics and clarity.
Clean Power Supply The use of a Clean STD circuit in the STRVA333ES between the power amp and driver circuits ensures a stable current flow to the driver circuit and eliminates voltage fluctuations from noise and the like.
Frame and Beam (FB) Chassis Featured in the ES Series, the back panel and main parts of the FB Chassis are made from 1.6mm sheet metal, while the bottom plate is 2mm thick. The inclusion of a horizontal beam adds to the all-round strength and vibration dampening qualities of the unit. The chassis corners feature stiffening boards that provide additional strength, as well as acting to diffuse natural resonant frequencies. On some ES products, copper plating is used on the back panel and bottom plate further enhance the RF noise dampening qualities by decreasing the ground potential difference.
