Was a Christmas present and the person the gift was for saw it on the porch with pictures of what it was. Looks great when it works, it truly is a Blu Ray player, just not a very good one considering the price. Looks.

For $ this is probably the best bargain out there. I know it is not cheap - but - at under $300 it is a steal. Blu-ray picture is clean.

Dolbys first appearance at the Paris Mondial Image Photo Son Show (1418 March) was a great success. The core message, Dolby at the heart of entertainment, reinforced Dolby Laboratories as the leading audio company in film sound and the pioneer of home cinema. Visitors to the newly designed Dolby stand could learn about the latest consumer technologies, including Dolby Headphone, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Digital EX, at six separate kiosks. The information was provided in six short two-minute
segments via headphones and LCD screens, using French narrative, demonstration clips, and graphics. Explanatory brochures were

Dolby Digital EX Product Rolls Out
Spring 2002 has seen the appearance of the first products with Dolby Digital EX Dolbys latest consumer technology. The technology was made available to licensees in November 2001 and has already been enthusiastically received. We have been very encouraged by the fast take-up of Dolby Digital EX by our licensees, said Dolbys David Fraser, Marketing Manager, Consumer Electronics. To have products being launched in Europe, just over four months after the technologys introduction, has exceeded all our expectations. Dolby Digital EX adds a centre rear surround channel to the 5.1-channel format,

also provided in French. A seventh demonstration at the centre of the stand, using a large plasma screen and a Dolby Digital 5.1 system, introduced visitors to Dolby Laboratories with a variety of exciting audio-visual demonstrations. Equipment displays showed the various entertainment platforms for Dolby technologies, from professional cinema to home cinema, video games, portable systems, and in-car audio. One of the most frequently discussed subjects was Dolby Headphone, with many questions arising from enthusiastic home cinema fans. Pro Logic II also aroused great interest among visitors. A competition at the stand received a massive 2,000 entries and the first three lucky winners received prizes kindly donated by our friends at Denon, Jamo, and Yamaha.

More Headphone Products Announced for Europe
Following on the success of the Packard Bell range of notebook computers, launched last year, more European Dolby Headphone consumer products have now been announced from leading manufacturers. For the home, Denon has introduced an upgrade to their existing AVR-5800 A/V receiver, adding Dolby Headphone (as well as Pro Logic II and Dolby Digital EX). At this years ICES, Denon also launched a brand new A/V receiver the Denon AVR-5803 incorporating Dolby Headphone. The new receiver, which also features Dolby Pro Logic II, will be available in Europe under the model name AVC-A1SR from May/June of this year. The worlds first amplifier to incorporate Dolby Headphone was the Marantz PS-17, launched last year in Japan, and now available in Europe. For those wanting hi-fi sound on the move, the Sharp MD-MT200 portable MiniDisc player can now be bought in Europe, allowing listeners to enjoy their music with Dolby Headphone. The European player comes hot on the heels of the success of the Sharp MD-ST880, the worlds first Dolby Headphone enabled MiniDisc player, which was launched last summer in Japan. For a full list of Dolby Headphone products and software downloads, visit www.dolby.com/headphone.

A number of seminars hosted by various industry experts gave visitors the opportunity to hear in-depth technical advice and opinions. Dolbys consultant in France, Serge Charzat, provided an update on the latest developments. The key topic at the show, without doubt, was home cinema. Almost all consumer electronics manufacturers at the show displayed or demonstrated their latest products incorporating Dolby Digital EX, Pro Logic II, and Dolby Headphone. Clarion, one of the few car audio companies at the show, demonstrated their latest Dolby Pro Logic II and DVD products in a fully equipped Citron. With over 46,000 visitors during the ve days, the show demonstrated the ongoing enthusiasm in France for home cinema.

Dolby Headphone is a unique signalprocessing technology that works with any set of headphones. Because Dolby Headphone models the effect of listening to speakers in a room, it can be used on both stereo and multichannel sources. The result is that the soundstage appears to be moved out of your head and be repositioned in front of you. Listening to Dolby Headphone and then switching back to plain stereo shows just how effective the technology is. There are up to three room types available with Dolby Headphone. The first models a small dry room, with
similar acoustics to a studio control room. The second models a slightly larger room, much like an average lounge, and is proving to be the most popular choice with listeners. Dolbys In-Car Technologies Put Surround in Motion
In-car audio systems with Dolby technologies have been developing at top speed, with Dolby Pro Logic II proving a sure winner. Having received an enthusiastic response during its launch at the IFA 2001 in Berlin, Dolbys Surround in Motion programme has gone from strength to strength. The IFA launch was followed in January at ICES with the introduction of Dolbys US demonstration car, a BMW X5 equipped with the latest Dolby technologies, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Surround Pro Logic II, and Dolby Headphone. This coincided with the announcement that top Dolby car audio licensees such as Alpine, Clarion, Rockford-Fosgate, and Zapco were starting to offer aftermarket car surround products with Dolby Pro Logic II. In addition, Volvo announced that a premium entertainment system including Pro Logic II will be available for its new SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle), the XC90.

Clarion DXZ928R the rst car audio product to incorporate Pro Logic II
Clarion and Volvo adopt Pro Logic II
Clarion has launched its DXZ928R CD/receiver head unit, with Sirius DARS capability. The DXZ928R represents the first integrated aftermarket car product to incorporate Pro Logic II for audio-only applications. Using Dolby Pro Logic II, it converts stereo CDs or FM radio into exciting surround sound. The product is available in Europe, priced at less than 750 euros. The Volvo XC90 SUV was enthusiastically received at its ofcial debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January 2002 and boasts a surround sound system with Pro Logic II as well as rear-seat audio/video options. Volvo is committed to providing superior automotive entertainment options, so it was a natural choice to select Dolby Pro Logic II for the new XC90, said John Neu, XC90 Life Cycle Manager, Volvo Cars of North America. The European debut of the XC90 will take place this autumn.

The emergence of both aftermarket and OEM car entertainment solutions featuring Pro Logic II underscores its dramatic market gains over the past year. With the success of Pro Logic II for home surround systems, it was inevitable that in-car entertainment systems would begin to incorporate it, said Martin Lindsay, Director of Business Development, Automotive Entertainment. Automotive systems and environments can be even more conducive to surround sound than the home, because so many cars already have rear speakers. As evidenced by both the Volvo and Clarion solutions, Pro Logic II holds great promise as an audio-only surround technology in the car. Other aftermarket Dolby Digital Pro Logic II products scheduled for release later in the year, include the Alpine PXA-H700 integrated sound processor, Clarion DVH923, and an eight-channel car surround decoder unit from Zapco.

Surround in Motion
Pro Logic II is one of the key technologies, along with Dolby Digital and Dolby Headphone, that make up Dolbys comprehensive Surround in Motion solutions. Pro Logic II represents the bestconceived, most natural-sounding matrix decoding technology for transforming standard twochannel stereo into multichannel surround sound. It works with any stereo audio format, including CD, FM or satellite radio, cassette, MP3 files, and MiniDisc. It can be incorporated into car sound systems at the factory, as Volvo has done, or through a variety of aftermarket products. Pro Logic II helps bridge the entertainment gap between two-channel audio and the fullfledged surround sound of 5.1-channel discrete systems. which makes front-toback and back-to-front flyovers sound more realistic and brings greater excitement to home cinema systems.

First implementations

At the end of February 2002, Sony Consumer Products STR-VA555ES multichannel surround sound receiver became the first Sony product of its kind to be launched with Dolby Digital EX. The STR-VA555ES receiver is a newly designed member of the Sony ES range and features advanced DSP processing and carefully selected components. It also includes Dolby Pro Logic II processing. Commenting on the new product, Eric Kingdon, European Technical Marketing Manager, said: We are very pleased to be able to introduce the STR-VA555ES, which, with Dolby Digital EX and Pro Logic II, offers superb surround sound decoding and processing. With the growth of multichannel audio formats, now more than ever, an A/V amplifier must deliver true high-delity performance. We are condent that the STRVA555ES will not disappoint the listener. The STR-VA555ES will be available throughout Europe from March 2002. Kenwood is also one of the latest Dolby licensees to announce a new product with Dolby Digital EX. The KR-V6060D-S comes packed with high-end features including Dolby Digital Pro Logic II, and will be available from April 2002. Yamaha had their DSP-AZ1 on display at the Mondial show

in Paris, and NAD announced their T762, which will be available in June. Both products also feature Dolby Digital EX and Pro Logic II. Terry Murphy, Yamahas Technical Product Manager, described the DSP-AZ1 as a technological achievement that took the home cinema experience to a new level, offering extraordinary sound quality and versatility. He attributed much of its success to Dolby Digital EX: The sheer number of calls we receive regarding Dolby Digital EX is testament to the quality of the system. Flawless steerage, true movie theatre sound, as well as the image of the brand, are key elements to its success and the reason we endorse it within the product.

EX on DVD

More and more films are being released in Dolby Digital Surround EX, and for a list of compatible DVDs, visit www.dolby.com/movies/films_previous. All Dolby Digital EX software is 100 per cent backwards-compatible with all existing Dolby Digital decoder products. Products displaying the Dolby Digital EX or THX Surround EX logos are required to reproduce the extra surround channel. CeBIT Provides Showcase for the Latest Dolby Audio Technologies
The biggest consumer trade fair in Europe and second only to Comdex worldwide, CeBIT is the gathering point for hundreds of companies in the IT and telecoms industries, both large and small. This years show in Hannover (1320 March) confirmed that digital surround sound is fast becoming the must-have feature in a huge range of consumer and computer peripheral products. For PC users wanting to experience full 5.1-channel surround sound from their systems, an ever-increasing number of products are now available, from advanced software that optimises the DVD experience for the PC platform, to multichannel soundcards with full 5.1-channel capability and high-quality loudspeaker products.
Hercules soundcard GameTheatre XP
Software, motherboards, and soundcards
One of the highlights at CeBIT this year was the new version of Cyberlinks PowerDVD software. This not only features full Dolby Digital support for DVD playback, but also Dolby Headphone technology, delivering full multichannel sound through headphones (perfect for the laptop user on the move). PowerDVD also includes, for the first time, Pro Logic II, bringing five-channel surround sound to any stereo audio source on the PC, including DVD, CD, WAV, and MP3. Also on show were motherCyberlinks Power DVD boards from manufacturers such as Asus and MSI featuring six-channel audio as standard, which means that a separate soundcard is no longer required to deliver full 5.1 audio quality. NVidia displayed a range of motherboards based on their NForce platform, featuring the first implementation of Dolbys Interactive Dolby Digital encoder on the PC, simplifying connection with external speaker systems by allowing Dolby Digital audio from games or DVD playback to be delivered using a single digital connection. NVidia also demonstrated their new NVDVD software DVD player, optimised for NVidias graphics chips and providing full Dolby Digital support. And not content with providing a 5.1 soundcard solution, leading manufacturer Hercules has gone one better with the first soundcard product to support Dolby Digital EX, the GameTheatreXP.

New AAC products
AAC enables high-quality audio for a new era of consumer entertainment devices. In keeping with CeBITs tradition as a show featuring the latest technical advances, a whole new raft of miniature entertainment devices was available for consumers to experience. Panasonic demonstrated their new range of SD card-based products, including the new SD-SV80 audio player, possibly the smallest in the world, and featuring AAC as its native audio format, and the SD-AV10, a miniature stills camera, MPEG-4 video camera, and AAC audio player that ts into the palm of your hand. Also on display were a number of mobile devices and services featuring high-quality video and music delivery, giving consumers some idea of what to expect in the future from their phones. Nokias 5510 phone, already available across Europe, features a built-in digital music player that uses the AAC format to deliver up to two hours of high-quality music, as opposed to only an hour using MP3. Panasonic and NTT Docomo gave glimpses of the services Japanese consumers can now enjoy on their phones, using AAC to deliver real-time streamed content to handsets using the latest high-speed wireless networks. And in preparation for the launch of 3G services across the world, Motorola was demonstrating their new 3G handset, the A820, which includes full-motion MPEG-4 video display, web cam, and AAC audio playback for music and video content.

European Movie Broadcasts in Dolby Digital 5.1 on the Rise
In September 2001, Sky Digital in the UK announced its intention to launch Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on feature film services. A new set-top box (called the Sky+ Digibox) with PVR facility and Dolby Digital decoding, as well as S/PDIF bitstream output, was launched in the UK at around the same time, and has enjoyed extremely healthy sales. The Dolby Digital service started in December and since then Sky has made over 100 scheduled broadcasts in Dolby Digital 5.1 on Sky Premier Widescreen of films such as Gladiator and American Beauty. Meanwhile, Skys NVOD Box Office service in recent months has shown eight different titles a month including Hannibal, Chocolat, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The first station in Europe to come on air with Dolby Digital was ProSieben in Germany, a free-to-air satellite broadcaster and part of the Kirch media group. Starting in 1999, ProSieben now broadcasts a Dolby Digital stream 24

And since April 2001, PREMIERE WORLD, the pay TV arm of Kirch, and Cinedom Deluxe, their NVOD service, have also been broadcasting movies in Dolby Digital 5.1. Over 150 films have been available in the past year on Cinedom Deluxe including titles such as Pearl Harbor and Perfect Storm, while mainstream channel PREMIERE ONE has broadcast all four currently available Star Wars titles and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Trials with digital terrestrial broadcasts have also been taking place using Dolby Digital. In France, two operators, towerCast and Canal+, have conducted successful trials of Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on terrestrial transmissions with a view to adding value to digital terrestrial broadcasts when they begin in France next year.

Dolby Announces MPEG-4 AAC Licensing Programme
Nokia joins AT&T, Dolby, Fraunhofer, and Sony in enabling next-generation audio solutions
Dolby has recently announced the launch of a newly expanded MPEG-4 AAC licensing programme. Joined by the co-licensors, Dolby is building on its successful MPEG-2 AAC programme to address streaming, wireless, and multimedia applications. Acting as the licensing administrator for patents held by AT&T, Dolby, Fraunhofer IIS-A, and Sony, Dolby is pleased to announce the addition of Nokia to the group of co-licensors. Dolby will immediately begin offering MPEG-4 AAC licences worldwide under fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory terms. Furthermore, a convenient migration path for existing MPEG-2 AAC licensees will be made available. The latest licensing programme from Dolby Laboratories is specifically geared toward MPEG-4 applications, which include Internet streaming, electronic media distribution (EMD), multimedia playback, and wireless applications. Dolby has long recognised that one size does not fit all when licensing to a worldwide market with multiple business models and applications, commented Ed Schummer, Senior VP and General Manager of Dolbys Consumer Division. The MPEG-4 AAC licensing programme has been finetuned, taking into account various market demands in radically different environments ranging from freely distributed PC-based software decoders to high-quality playback consumer electronics devices.
