Proposal: Teaching a 2-week Basic Microsoft Office / Internet, and Digital Storytelling to Haitian youth, and helping the child soldiers create a collection of stories about their life experiences

Precedent

Rodney Montreuil is a Technology Integration Specialist who is currently appointed by the Arizona Department of Education. Last school year, Rodney was commissioned by the Adult Education Department to train students and teachers on the techniques of DIGITAL STORYTELLING. During summer time, Rodney organizes computer training for the innercity, low-income youth and adults in Mesa and Chandler, Arizona for free. This time he would like to extend this opportunity to the children of his native Haiti, and more specifically the child soldiers. This is a rare attempt to put these young people on the fair side of the Digital Divide. In Haitis capital of Port-au-Prince, armed gangs recruit children as soldiers. They can begin as messengers or lookouts, lured with money and food. Then they are drawn into escalating acts of violence or risk beatings or worse. There are currently two childrens jails in Port-au-Prince: 85 boys between the ages of 9 and 17 are in a childrens jail, and 60 girls of a similar age range are integrated into the adult womens prison. These children have a story to tell the world. They want to share the atrocities they were victims of. Rodney will spend two weeks in Haiti to
capture these stories. The child soldiers will use their own voices and freshly learned skills to tell the naked truth about their ordeals. Rodney is also currently cooperating with Yele Haiti, an organization founded by the Grammy Award winning artist Wyclef Jean, in the area of translation. The collaboration is ongoing and very productive. Founded and led by Haitian-born hip hop musician Wyclef Jean, Yle Haiti is a non-political movement helping to provide both resources and inspiration to help change Haiti. The power of music is being used to make a difference in a wide range of projects in the areas of education, health, environment and community development. Yle Haitis long term goal is to establish a network of centers throughout the country as a means of supporting youth development through education, vocational training, health services, sports and music. Project Objectives

The objectives of this project are to a) train Haitian youth on MS Office / Internet, and Digital Storytelling b) help the child soldiers create a collection of their best stories, and d) market the collection to raise funds to support the educational rehabilitation of these children.

Target Participant

Young leaders, Child soldiers, some of Yele Haiti and Prodev foundation children between the ages of 10 and 18.

Official Launching

Croix des Bouquets, Haiti, where a computer lab is being built, will be the ground for the official launching of this initiative. The projected agenda will feature the following:
Rodney will get sponsorship to finance his trip and accommodations in Haiti, and for the acquisition of the equipment needed for the training. Any donation collected will be done through Yele Haiti. (See budget) Rodney will teach MS Office components & Internet during the first week, and then Digital Story Telling during the second week. The child soldiers will be set aside away from the general population to work on their digital stories. These stories will be edited, and finalized in an acceptable format for publication. The trainees will get a chance to review their peers stories and their own to generate feedback later. They will sign a consent release form that allows Yele Haiti to use the final products for future marketing activities. Some of these trainees may use their own music for the background of the story. To increase the marketability of the product, Wyclef may want to lend his voice and original soundtracks to some of the story lines. Since the stories will be told in Creole or French, English subtitles will be used. The final product will come on a DVD that will be marketed strategically based on substantial demand. It will be advertised on the internet, Telemax, and other media outlets in Haiti and other countries. Yele Haiti will approach 20/20, Ed Bradley (CBS), Anderson Cooper (CNN), MTV, NPR All Things Considered, Tavis Smiley, UNICEF, United Nations, and Oprah Winfrey to make a story around the project, and eventually interview the child soldiers. All the proceeds will go to fund the educational rehabilitation of these children.

Evaluation

The success of the initiative will be assessed in terms of the number of participants, the retention rate, attendance, understanding of the material taught, and more importantly course completion. On the other hand, it will also depend on how well the DVD sells to generate funds for the childrens education.

Future Perspective

The possibility for this Project model to be implemented in other countries will be assessed; especially in those places where the child soldier phenomenon exists. Future training may also cover A+, Computer Assemblage, & Repair.
