Success through Innovation
Steinel. The original. Products for people and the environment Intelligent energy saving. This is the vision that made STEINEL invent the world's first sensor light 20 years ago. A milestone in convenience, safety, security and saving energy. As such, everyone today can make a contribution towards cutting CO2 emissions and counteract climate change. But intelligent lighting control from STEINEL are not only good for the environment: Using less energy, you save hard cash - and light that comes 'ON' automatically brings a significant measure of added convenience to everyday routine. This way, our idea benefits people and the environment. Treat yourself to the original! Because now as ever, "made by STEINEL" is synonymous with practical functionality, quality and durability. Today, we develop and manufacture products of world renown at six locations in Europe. With German Quality. For us, making sure that applies to all stages of production means: In-house research and development with toolmaking and prototype construction. In-house production of electronics, plastics and injection mouldings. Quality management system certified to DIN EN ISO 9001 and products that carry all of the relevant test marks. Development of start-to-finish sales concepts, including presentation and merchandising. Internal warehouse logistics, from order picking to shipment world-wide. Competent field service and service hot line.
Motion Detectors for Outdoors
Switches that can see STEINEL Infrared sensors, also known as motion detectors, respond to heat radiated from moving persons and use this ability, for example, to switch a light 'ON' and, after a selectable period of time, 'OFF' again. STEINEL Infrared sensors also bring modern-day convenience to lights that are already installed. Generous reach and coverage angles of 130 to 360 for a whole range of applications. Sneak-by guard for complete surveillance. Reliable operation, even in adverse weather conditions. Twilight threshold and light 'ON' duration can be set to meet individual needs. Easy installation, even on internal and external corners. Ideal too for indoor areas, such as corridors and basement rooms.

Light comes 'ON' automatically
How does an infrared motion detector work? Any object with a temperature that lies above absolute zero (-273,15 C) emits electromagnetic radiation. Given the temperature range of the human body, this radiation lies in the infrared portion of the spectrum. Passive infrared (PIR) motion detectors use this fact. These units are equipped with highly sensitive infrared detectors that respond to the slightest fluctuation in the heat they detect by changing their voltage output. The area covered is divided up into zones by segment lenses. Heat sources moving between these segments are detected as a change in voltage and used for controlling light or other electrical loads. Sensor technology with Fresnel lens So-called Fresnel lenses provide the easiest way of segmenting and, at the same time, of widening the detection zone of an IR detector. They comprise a system of individual lenses is arranged in a circular segment. A maximum angle of coverage of 180 provides the capability of reliably watching over an area of up to 225 m2. A second optical window below the main detection zone makes it virtually impossible to sneak past underneath the sensors without being detected. Sensor technology with multi-lens STEINEL has developed multi-lens technology (MLT) for sensors that are required to meet exacting demands. This is a semi-spherical element comprising many individual lenses. This technology permits the detection of heat sources in a 360 radius and covers an area of up to 450 m2. Separate sneak-by guard is superfluous. MTL also provides the perfect basis for systems with double or triple sensors.
segment lens pyro detector angle of coverage (plane A)
Sneak-by guard (plane B)
Sensor reach STEINEL sensors generally have a max. reach of 12 m (HS 500: 20 m!) that may be shorter when crossed in a radial walking direction.
Sneak-by guard The dense, horizontal and vertical detection zone of STEINEL sensor systems makes it virtually impossible for anyone to sneak past, providing real security.
12 m max. 2m
Coverage angles of Fresnel lenses STEINEL sensors with Fresnel lenses have coverage angles of 130, 140 or 180, making them idea for targeting expansive areas.
Coverage angles of multi-lenses As a result of their wide coverage angles of 180 to 360, STEINEL sensors with multi-lenses are also suitable for keeping large areas under perfect surveillance.
180 / 2 sensors 240 / 2 sensors

Sensor Systems for Outdoors IS LED
Infrared Sensor with LED Light
The world has never seen anything like this before. The IS LED combines timeless, aesthetic design with practical benefits. Just like any other motion detector, for instance, it switches an external light 'ON' and 'OFF' again. At the same time, though, the IS LED is also a house number illuminated by LEDs. This unique, practical and stylish combination can be used for all sorts of applications. This is how they work Three LED function programmes geared to practical needs: 1. 'ON' at twilight threshold, all night 2. 'ON' at twilight threshold to the middle of the night 3. 'ON' when movement is detected When movement is detected, the light connected switches 'ON' and 'OFF' again independently of the programme. Manual override (4h) can be selected at a mains power switch connected to the light. Setting capabilities Detection zone of motion detector can be limited using the shrouds provided. Easy, convenient selection of light 'ON' time, twilight threshold and programme on removable sensor module.

HF-SensorLights for Indoors
Indoor lighting convenience With STEINEL SensorLights, light is switched 'ON' and 'OFF' as people come and go. Reliably, quickly and, above all, automatically. Cutting-edge high-frequency sensors invisibly concealed inside the light reliably and instantly respond to the slightest movement or change in light levels. Security, convenience and energy saving because light comes 'ON' automatically. Available as wall or ceiling lights in many different designs. Response light level, light 'ON' time and reach can be adjusted to suit individual requirements. Reliable operation. Straightforward installation: Light and sensor = 1 connection Glass shade availability guaranteed for 5 years.
High-frequency SensorLights for Wall and Ceiling Mounting
High-frequency sensors respond faster Wherever there are people, there is movement. This fact makes motion sensors the ideal cornerstone for intelligent light switches. STEINEL high-frequency (HF) sensors identify movement instantly without any restriction to "sensitivity" through ambient temperature and direction in which the object being detected moves. High-frequency sensors actively scan the detection zone. To do this, they emit signals and receive the echo reflected off walls and surrounding objects a moment later. Any movement is instantly detected and the light is switched 'ON'. What's more, there's no more forgetting to switch the light 'OFF'; the light does that for itself. STEINEL high-frequency sensors operate at 5.8 GHz. As glass and thin walls do not get in the way of these signals, the sensors can be fitted inside the light, making them invisible from the outside. This way, nothing spoils the attractive design of STEINEL SensorLights. At approx.1 mW, their power output is about 1000 times less than that of a mobile phone. All of these qualities make the STEINEL HF sensor the perfect solution for automatic indoor lighting. An innovation from STEINEL the original.
Convenience, safety, lower costs Employing state-of-the-art high-frequency sensors to control interior lights as and when they're needed, STEINEL has heralded in a new era of lighting automation. STEINEL HF SensorLights are designed specifically for indoor spaces, such as corridors, hallways, kitchens and bathrooms. They can be wall and ceiling-mounted.
2,50 m 18 m 18 m 1,75 m
The 360 detection zone with an aperture angle of 160 and reach of up to 8 m reliably watches over rooms as large as 50 m2.
Reach setting STEINEL HF sensor lights can detect movements across a diameter of 1 to 8 m. You can infinitely vary the reach you require using the system's electronics.
Time setting STEINEL HF sensor lights are equipped with a timer that makes sure the light stays switched 'ON' for a selectable period of time even after a temporary movement in the detection zone. The time you want the light to stay 'ON' for can be adjusted to any setting between 5 sec and 15 min.
DQS-certified to DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000
Testing lines and long-term tests You can rely on STEINEL brandname quality. Before a product goes into mass production, it is required to undergo comprehensive and rigourous testing to verify its dependability and suitability for day-today use.

Energy-saving sensor technology from STEINEL can be used wherever light is needed. Whether indoors or out, spot lighting or illuminating large spaces: Using the sensor products from the brand and technology leader, environment-friendly lighting is achievable here and now. This way, everyone can help to make a better future.
Light only when it's needed.
About 19 % of the energy used world-wide goes on lighting. This equates to an annual demand of about 2,650 terrawatt-hours. Much of this gigantic amount is wasted partly by leaving lights switched 'ON' unnecessarily. With sensor technology from STEINEL, wasting this resource is a thing of the past: Light comes 'ON' automatically when you enter a room. And switches 'OFF' again when you leave. What's more, using low-energy lamps with our sensor lights is not a problem either. This way, lighting from STEINEL helps to save huge quantities of energy, CO2 emission and costs. Besides this: Lights that switch 'ON' automatically enhance everyday convenience, safety and security. That's "intelligent energy saving".

Principle
Light 'ON'. Light 'OFF'. Sensor-controlled
Automatic lights are created by using motion sensors. This is where two different technologies are employed: HF-sensors (see page 76) are the ideal solution for indoors. Outdoors, only passive infrared (PIR) sensors are used. Heat radiated from the human body Any object with a temperature above absolute zero (-273 C) gives off electromagnetic radiation. Given the temperature range of the human body, this radiation lies in the infrared portion of the spectrum. It is used by infrared sensors to detect people moving.
Segment lenses
Multi-lenses STEINEL sensors with multi-lenses provide a coverage angle of 180, 240 or 360.
180 / 2 sensors 240 / 2 sensors 360 / 3 sensors
STEINEL multi-lens technology Multi-lens technology (MLT) provides uninterrupted coverage of a semi-spherical detection zone. This makes it the ideal lens system for motion detectors with double or triple sensors.
Heat radiation as a remote controller The heart of a PIR sensor system is what's called a pyro-sensor. This electronic component responds to any fluctuation in incident infrared heat radiation with a change in voltage. As all individuals give off infrared radiation through body heat, they automatically change the thermal image detected by the sensor on entering the system's field of vision. The sudden rise in voltage this causes is processed by the electronics for switching 'ON' light. For sensor systems to respond to movements within the detection zone, they are equipped with a segment lens. This divides the pyrodetector's field of vision into active and passive zones (zones not visible to the sensor). When a heat source crosses a zone boundary, the IR radiation received changes for the sensor which then emits a signal. Active area
Segment lens
Pyro-sensor Detection angle Fresnel lenses L 562 Fresnel lenses provide the simplest means of segmenting the detection zone of an infrared detector. A system of individual lenses is arranged here in the form of an arc. With a maximum coverage angle of 180, they can watch over an area of up to 225 m2. A second optical window below the main detection zone makes it virtually impossible to creep past underneath the sensors without being detected.
Fresnel lenses STEINEL sensors with Fresnel lenses provide a coverage angle of 130, 140 or 180.
130 / 1 sensor 140 / 1 sensor 180 / 2 sensors
Passive area
Multi-sensor technology STEINEL has developed the multisensor system for applications placing particularly exacting demands on the size of the detection zone. Within the system, two or even three pyro-sensors are positioned at a specific angle to each other that adds their detection zones together.
The segment lens focuses IR radiation from its surroundings onto the sensor and divides the areas covered in active and passive zones (zones masked out for the sensor). The boundary between these zones forms what is called a switching zone as the sensor registers any person or
object crossing this boundary as a fluctuation in radiation and emits a signal. The segment lenses used are simple Fresnel lenses or STEINEL's high-performance multi-lens.
Reach in relation to the direction of movement
radial movement tangential movement
Reach STEINEL sensors generally provide a max. reach of 12 m that may be shorter when walking in a radial direction (towards the sensor).
Multi-sensor technology increases the size of the detection zone by means of two (illustrated) or three identical pyro-sensors within the system.
approx. 5 m 12 m max.
Mini-sensor
Functions
Setting capabilities
Adjustment range STEINEL sensors with a coverage angle of less than 180 are equipped with lenses that can be tilted and turned for exact adjustment to the situation at the point of installation. Shrouds All sensors come with shrouds that can be cut to size for limiting detection zones (e.g. next to neighbouring property / roads). Twilight setting A control dial can be used for infinitely varying brightness threshold from 2 lux (night) to 2000 lux (day). This prevents light from coming 'ON' unnecessarily during the day. Time setting Adjustable to any period from 5 sec. to 15 min. to suit specific needs. After detecting movement, the light stays 'ON' for the period selected.
5 Sek.15 Min.
Mini-sensor: Elegant, efficient and intelligent
Developing the mini-sensor, STEINEL has adopted a whole new approach to creating PIR sensor systems. A spherical segmented mirror guides ambient IR radiation onto a state-ofthe-art and extremely efficient IR sensor chip. This configuration not only makes it possible to keep the system extremely small, it also permits the reliable detection of movement in a full 360 circle. The new operating concept To permit rapid, intuitive adjustability of the sensor electronics to individual user needs, the entire sensor module can be taken out of the light, set in your own time, plugged back in again and securely locked in place. While settings are being made, the light switches itself 'ON' as soon as the sensor is removed. This is practical at twilight or during the night. All of the information you need to know is printed in the sensor module itself, obviating the need for any operating instructions. Programme selector switch

Plug and save The mini-sensor module plugs in and can be removed for conveniently setting the light's functions.

22000 Lux
Watt-o-matic (brightness control) Provides the capability of adjusting basic brightness from 0 50% of SensorLight output. When movement is detected, the SensorLight switches to full power. Shows the way from a distance and frightens off uninvited guests. Soft light start and soft end
Innovative and efficient The mini-sensor's outstanding properties are achieved by the spherical segmented mirror and the state-of-the-art quadruple pyro-sensor.
Elegantly increases output from the lamp in the SensorLight to 100% power. That's kind on the eye and helps to prolong lamp life! Manual override Many of STEINEL's SensorLights can be set to stay 'ON' permanently for 4 hours by operating a switch twice. Afterwards, the light automatically returns to sensor mode.

IP Ratings and Protection Classes
IP protection rating The IP code classifies the level of protection provided by enclosures and covers used for protecting electrical equipment. The IP code is defined under IEC 529, EN 60529, DIN VDE 0470-1 and NF C 20-010. The protection ratings are defined by the letters IP (International Protection) followed by two digits. This means that the full protection rating consists of the two letters and the digits indicating the level of protection. 1st digit Protection of equipment against the ingress of solid, foreign objects and also protection of persons against contact with hazardous parts. 2nd digit Protection of equipment against the harmful ingress of water. Where there is no protection rating - with regard to one of the criteria - the digit is replaced with the letter X, e.g. IP X4 or IP 6X.
IK protection code as defined in EN The degree of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts is defined by the IK code under standard EN 50102 - VDE 0470 Part 100 and EN 62262.
IK 0X IK = Code letters (international mechanical protection) 0X = IK class of impact protection (from 00 to 10)
1st digit
Protection against ingress of foreign objects
Equipment provides no protection against ingress of solid, foreign objects. Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objects in a diameter > 50 mm. Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objects in a diameter > 12.5 mm. Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objects in a diameter > 2.5 mm. Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objects in a diameter > 1 mm.
VDE-GS label For technical work equipment and ready-to-use items of daily use within the meaning of the GPSG (optionally instead of VDE label for these products) If products are technical work equipment or ready-to-use items of daily use within the meaning of the German Act on Equipment and Product Safety, you can also use the VDE-GS label. VDE-EMC label For equipment conforming to the standards on electromagnetic compatibility. The VDE-EMC label expresses a product's conformity with the applicable standards on the electromagnetic compatibility of products. However, this mark also signalises the reliable operation of your product in an electromagnetic environment. As the requirements on issuing the label automatically and unreservedly cover satisfaction of the relevant standards. ENEC label from VDE For products meeting harmonised certification procedures. The European standards specified in the ENEC Agreement provide the basis for testing. Products (these currently being lights, light components, low-energy lamps, IT equipment, transformers, appliance switches, electrical regulators and control devices, terminals, appliance couplers, some types of capacitor and radio interference suppression components) tested on this basis are allowed to carry VDE's ENEC label. Approval from another body involved in the European certification procedure is not necessary.
VDE cable marking VDE cable marking applies to cables, leads and wiring conduits and trunkings. CE label The manufacturer documents and declares in its sole responsibility that the product marked satisfies the basic requirements of EU directives. This label is not a mark of tested safety and quality but is directed towards the authority supervising the market. F label Information showing that lights may be mounted on normally flammable surfaces.
