ATTACHING LENS TO CAMERA How to mount the lens Removing the rear cap of the lens, align the lens attachment mark on the lens barrel with its counterpart on the lens mount of the camera and insert the lens mount into the cameras mount opening. Rotate the lens clockwise until it click-locks. For Nikon models, align the lens attachment mark with the dot on the camera and rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it click-locks. How to detach the lens Pressing the lens release button of the camera down, turn the lens counter-clockwise (clockwise in case on Nikon), and lift the lens off the cameras lens mount. * For further details, please read the instruction manual of your camera. FOCUSING (Autofocus) (Ref. Figs. 1 & 2) Set the camera on the autofocus mode (AF). Press the shutter button lightly while viewing through the cameras viewfinder, the lens focuses automatically. An in-focus mark will light when lens focuses on the main subject sharply. Press the shutter button further to photograph. * Also, please read the cameras instruction booklet carefully. When set on AF mode, be very careful not to hinder the autofocusing movements of the lens. Such interference may cause a serious damage on the lens mechanism. Select between the autofocus and manual focus modes by the AF/MF mode selector switch on the lens barrel. * For further details, please read the instruction manual of your camera. FOCUSING (Manual Focus) (Ref. Fig. 2) Switch the focusing mode switch of the camera to manual focusing mode (MF) in case of Nikon, Minolta, or Pentax camera. In case of Canon, switch to MF on the AF-MF altering switch on the lens barrel. Focus manually, rotating the focusing ring while viewing through the cameras viewfinder. The main subject image in the viewfinder will be critically sharp on the viewfinder screen as lens focuses rightly. Press the shutter button lightly while operating the lens for focusing. The focus aid mark in the viewfinder will light up when the subject is in critical focus. Make sure the subject at infinity appears sharp in the finder when in focus. Because, the infinity position on the lens is made with certain allowance to assure right focus under a wide variety of photographing conditions. * For further details, please read the instruction manual of your camera. ZOOMING (Ref. Fig. 2) Rotate the zoom ring while viewing through the cameras viewfinder and compose your image with right focal length obtained.
ZOOM LOCK SWITCH (Ref. Fig 3 & 4) Models A09 are equipped with a newly developed zoom lock switch mechanisms, which prevent lens barrels from extending toward long focal length by their own weight while hung from shoulders. Activated, the switches at 28mm settings to stop the lens barrels from rotating and extending. How to activate the zoom lock switch mechanism 1. Locking: Set the lens to the 28-mm position. Move the zoom lock switch toward the camera for locking and zoom ring. In case of the model A09, the lens barrel is locked in position when the portion beneath Lock is shown in red and does not rotate or extend by its own weight. 2. Releasing: Push the switch away from your camera. The lens barrel is now free to rotate and extend for zooming. The zoom lock switch cannot be activated unless the lens is set to the 28-mm position. Do not force the lock switch or do not try to rotate the lens barrel while locked. The lens can be used at 28-mm setting for picture taking even when locked by the switch. The zoom lock mechanism is made to prevent the lens barrel from extending while carried around on the shoulder. When not locked, the zoom lens may change its focal length during a long exposure if used while in a low or high angle position. LENS APERTURE AND AE MODE (Ref. Fig. 7 & 8) Setting lens f-numbers with Canon & Minolta cameras Set the f-number with aperture setting device of the camera body in accordance with the selected photographing mode. * For further details, please read the instruction manual of your camera. Setting the f-numbers with Nikon & Pentax cameras Photographing in a programmed-AE or a shutter-speed-priority-AE mode, rotate the lens aperture ring to the minimum aperture setting position, in the case of a Nikon camera, and set on the A position in the case of a Pentax camera. The aperture ring will be locked in position automatically. When shooting in an aperture-priority-AE or manual-exposure mode, release the lens aperture ring by rotating the ring from the AE lock position and depressing the Aperture ring lock button. If your camera is a Nikon F401 or F50, you can set the aperture to any desired f-number, leaving the aperture ring at the minimum opening position. * The lens aperture varies with zooming movement. Cameras read the different lens openings and automatically adjust the exposure properly. * For further details, please read the instruction manual of your camera. LENS HOOD (Ref. Figs. 1, 9, 10 & 11) A bayonet-type lens hood is provided as a standard accessory. We recommend shooting with the hood attached whenever possible as the lens hood eliminates stray light, which is harmful to the picture. However, please be aware of the precautions written below when your camera is equipped with a built-in flash. Attaching the Lens Hood (Ref. Fig. 9 & 10)
Align the index mark on the hood with the corresponding index mark (O or the top of the index line of the distance scale) on the lens. Press the hood lightly onto the hood attaching bayonet ring (Fig. 9, No. 1) and then rotate it clockwise to secure (Fig. 9, No. 2). The lens hood will be securely held as the mark TAMRON O comes to the top (Fig. 10, No. 3). When attaching the lens hood, hold the focusing and zoom control rings so that they are not rotated unintentionally. * Pay particular attention to align the hood attaching indices when using zoom lenses including wise-angle (i.e. 35mm or wider) settings. Improper attachment of a hood for wide-angle zoom lens may cause large shadowed areas in your pictures. Stowing Lens Hood a. Detach and reverse lens hood then, align alignment mark of lens hood (TAMRON O) with alignment mark of lens. (Fig. 11,a). b. Press lens hood evenly onto bayonet ring and turn hood clockwise until stop. When stopped, alignment mark of hood will be placed at top. DEPTH OF FIELD With a camera equipped with a depth-of-field-preview button or a aperture-stopdown mechanism, the depth-of-field can be directly observed on the viewfinder screen of your camera. For the operational details, read the instruction manual of your camera. * In case you need a depth-of-field table of your lens, please ask for it at a Tamron distributor or a service station. * You can also download a depth-of-field table of your interest from our website. Tamron URL: http://www.tamron.co.jp INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Please be aware that there is no infrared index line on any models listed on this owners manual, and therefore, practically no black-and-white infrared film can be used with these lenses. PRECAUTIONS IN SHOOTING The Tamron lenses, AP AF28-75mm (Model A09) employ an internal focusing (IF) system to achieve a remarkable minimum photographing distances of 0.33 meter (1.08 feet). Because of the characteristics of this optical design, the angles of view at distances other than infinity are wider than that of the lenses applying an ordinary focusing system. When the built-in flash on the camera is used, adverse photographic phenomena such as corner illumination fall-off or vignetting at the bottom part of the image may be observed, especially in wide-angle ranges. This is due to the inherent limitation of coverage of the built-in flash, and/or the relative position of the flash to the edge of the lens barrel, which causes shadows on the image. It is strongly recommended to use a suitable separate flash unit provided by the camera manufacturer for all flash photography. * For further details, please read the built-in flash article on the instruction manual of your camera.
When using the lens in the telephoto focal range, it may be necessary to use a tripod to avoid camera shake. Using high-speed film (ISO 400 or faster) with a fast shutter speed is also helpful to reduce the influence of camera shake. Tele-converters are efficient tools to add focal length to the photographers telephoto lenses including zoom lenses but cannot be recommended for use with wide-angle lenses or zoom lenses that cover wide-angle range focal lengths. * When a tele-converter is attached, the focal length of the lens becomes longer but the depth of field becomes shallower and it may be difficult to focus in AF mode. Therefore, focusing in MF (Manual Focusing) mode is recommended when a tele-converter is used. 2X tele-converters cannot be used with this lens. Do not use 2X tele-converters. Certain camera models may indicate the maximum and minimum aperture values of the lens as inappropriate numbers. This is inherent to the design of the camera and not an indication of an error. TO ENSURE LONG-TERM SATISFACTION Avoid touching the glass element surface. Use a photographic lens cloth or blower to remove dust from the lens element surface. When not using the lens, always place a lens cap on it for protection. Use a lens cleaning tissue or a lint cloth with a drop of cleaning solution to remove fingerprints or dirt on the glass lens surface with a rotary motion from the center to the edge. Use a silicon cloth to clean your lens barrel only. Mildew is an enemy of your lens. Clean the lens after shooting near water or in any humid place. Store your lens in a clean, cool and dry place. When storing the lens in a lens case, store it with a commercially available drying agent such as silica gel, and change the agent occasionally. If you find mildew on your lens, consult a repair shop or nearby photographic store. Do not touch the lens-camera interface contacts since dust, dirt and/or stains may cause contact failure between the lens and camera. When using your equipment [camera(s) and lens(es)] in an environment where the temperature changes from one extreme to the other, make sure to put your equipment temporarily in a case or a plastic bag for a length of time in order for the equipment to go through a gradual temperature shift. This will reduce potential equipment trouble.

Tamron Lens Technology
The Inside Edge: Innovative Ideas In Pursuit Of Optical Perfection
For over half a century Tamron has been recognized as a leading innovator in cutting-edge optical design, and acclaimed for its mastery of the underlying mechanical and electronic technologies that make todays amazing lenses possible. Developing practical, compact, easy-to-use lightweight zoom lenses with incredible zoom ranges, apertures and close focusing ability, that also deliver world-class imaging performance, is not simply a matter of refining existing ideasit entails creative thinking at the highest level. Here is a definitive list that explains each of the original proprietary design concepts used in todays state-of-the-art Tamron lenses.
Digitally Integrated Lenses For Top Imaging Performance
Di ( Digitally Integrated Design ) is a Tamron designation that applies to lenses that have been optimized for digital capture using advanced multi-coating techniques and optical designs that assure excellent image quality across the entire picture field. Because of these characteristics, Di lenses provide outstanding performance on cameras with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as on 35mm film.
Introducing "VC" - Tamron's Unique Vibration Compensation Mechanism
Tamron's unique VC ( Vibration Compensation) mechanism uses a proprietary actuator and algorithms to deliver an extremely stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking. The mechanism uses a three-coil system to electromagnetically drive the lens element that compensates for vibration, which glides smoothly on three steel bearings with little friction. This simple mechanical structure is one of the secrets to Tamron's compact lenses.
*VC is loaded on B005(17-50mm), B008(18-270mm), A20(28-300mm) and A005 (70-300mm/except Sony mount).
XR glass, with its superior light-bending power, makes it possible to design a short-barrel lens with the same light-gathering ability (aperture value) as a long-barrel lenseven with a smaller lens diameter. By using this principle Tamron has been able to shorten the length of the entire optical system and produce lighter, more compact lenses of the same speed, and also to provide greater zoom ranges in lenses that are much more convenient to carry and hand-hold.

Hybrid Aspherical Elements Provide the Ultimate in Image Quality and Compactness
Tamron uses several hybrid aspherical lens elements in the 18-250mm, 17-50mm VC, 17-50mm, 28-75mm, 28-300mm ( XR Di and VC ) and other lenses bearing the Aspherical designation. These innovative optics allow us to achieve the ultimate in image quality, and at the same time produce lenses that offer remarkable zoom ranges in extraordinarily compact packages, By perfecting these cutting-edge advances for series production, Tamron has advanced the state of optical design, and virtually eliminated spherical aberration and image distortion from the high-power-zoom series. Through the effective application of Hybrid Aspherical Technology, one lens element can take the place of multiple elements without compromising performance. This is what allows us to produce remarkably compact long-range lenses that deliver a uniformly high level of image quality at all focal lengths and apertures.
Digitally Integrated Lenses Optimized For APS-C Format Digital SLR Cameras
Di II is the designation Tamron applies to lenses designed for exclusive use on digital SLR cameras with APS-C format image sensors. All Di II lenses are optimized to meet the performance characteristics of this popular class of cameras, providing maximum resolution concentrated within the image field and assuring that light rays at the edges of the frame reach the sensor at favorable angles, thereby minimizing peripheral light falloff. In addition, all lenses bearing this designation incorporate effective measures to increase light transmission and eliminate ghosting and flare, which are particularly noticeable with digital cameras. Tamrons advanced multi-coatings are applied not only to external and internal lens surfaces, but also to surfaces in between cemented lens elements. Finally, Di II lenses are offered in a wide array that includes the focal length ranges most desired by DSLR shooters.

Special Glass For Better Performance And More Compact Lens Designs
XR (Extra Refractive Index ) glass can bend light rays at steeper angles, thereby decreasing the physical length of the lens while enhancing imaging performance by minimizing optical aberrations. This has allowed Tamron to develop a line of shorter, smaller-diameter, lighter lenses without sacrificing lens speed, and actually upgrading image quality compared to older designs. XR glass is costlier than conventional glass but it yields enhanced optical power distribution, making possible many of the outstanding and innovative lens designs that bear the XR designation. More compact lenses with the same speed: Its all in the barrel

Super Performance For Discriminating Shooters
Tamron SP ( Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamrons optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parametersthey are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.

AFMF Auto-focus/Manual focus (AF/MF) Switch Mechanism on the Focus Ring
The ability to switch quickly between auto-focus ( AF ) and manual focus (MF ) is a great asset in many types of shooting, especially sports and nature photography. This is easily accomplished with Tamrons ingenious AF/MF system. By simply sliding the focus ring back and forth between the two positions you can select either the AF or the MF focusing position. In manualfocus mode Tamron lenses provide smooth, precise manual focusing by turning their wide, well-textured focusing rings.

XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens
Extra Low Dispersion ( XLD) lens elements made from specialized ultra-high-grade glass allow Tamron lens designers to achieve much greater control over chromatic aberration (color fringing) and magnification aberrations, the two major factors that inhibit image quality enhancement. In combination with LD elements, XLD elements are used to achieve sophisticated lenses that deliver the highest possible contrast, the finest detail, and superior imaging performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Tamron uses advanced multi-coating techniques to suppress reflections and light dispersion on lens element surfaces that result in reduced light transmission and may, under adverse conditions, cause flare and ghost images that reduce contrast and can diminish image quality. The BBAR (Broad-Band, Anti-Reflection) multiple-layer coating technique also helps to provide the best possible color balance for vibrant and accurate color rendition. Tamron has developed an improved proprietary version of BBAR multi-coating that successfully increases light transmission in both longer and shorter wavelengths, and has applied it to all the latest Tamron lenses.
The Detachable Filter Effect Control
The Filter Effect Control is designed to rotate the filter to the desired position with the hood attached, enabling you to simultaneously perform minute adjustments to PL filter compensation. You can confirm the Polarizing effect through the viewfinder, all while using the hood to prevent harmful light from entering the lens.
Engineering Plastics Technology
To insure the highest levels of performance and durability without adding additional weight, Tamron High-Power Zoom Lenses make extensive use of engineering plastic materials in many critical mechanical components of the lens. Tamron has developed advanced proprietary methods for manufacturing these advanced polycarbonate materials to a very high degree of precision, and repeated tests have confirmed their long-lasting properties and dimensional stability under the toughest conditions. Indeed, polycarbonate of this caliber is the material of choice whenever we produce high-precision components that require the strength to withstand rigorous use.
ISO 14001 Environmental Management Philosophy In accordance with its corporate management philosophy, Tamron's goal is to create and deliver superior quality products and services to meet customer needs. Furthermore, each Tamron employee is fully committed to the preservation of the global environment at every level and for each facet of company activities. At Tamron, we recognize the significance of our social responsibilities.
Internal Focusing (IF) System Piezo Drive
An exclusive Tamron innovation, PZD is an advanced ultrasonic, autofocus (AF) motor based on the latest piezoelectric technologythe standing wave principle. It utilizes high-frequency voltage to turn a ceramic piezoelectric element with a swiveling motion, causing the metal tip at the rotors contact point to rotate elliptically, thereby turning the rotor to focus the lens swiftly, silently, and with great precision. Standing wave ultrasonic motors like the one used in Tamrons innovative PZD have a number Internal focusing (IF) provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamrons Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field (vignetting), and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.
Anomalous Dispersion (AD) For Better Color Correction
Anomalous dispersion (AD) glass is a special type of optical glass that is used to achieve more precise control of chromatic aberrations, thereby enhancing overall imaging performance. Glass of this type provides an abnormally large partial dispersion ratio (amount of diffraction) for light of specific wavelength ranges (colors) within the visible spectrum. By combining AD glass having these special characteristics with elements made of normal glass having different dispersion characteristics, it is possible to
Multiple-Cam Mechanism For Smooth, Stable Zooming and Precise Focusing at All Focal Lengths
The manufacture of compact, high quality, highpower zoom lenses became a reality only when Tamron perfected a lens chassis that permitted stable and smooth extension of the lens barrel. The Multiple Cam Zoom Mechanism is an original Tamron design that incorporates several precision cams cut into a single cylindrical surface by high-tech automated machinery. This key component enables zoom lens barrels to be extended and retracted effortlessly, achieving commendably compact dimensions at the wide-angle settings, while holding precise extension at telephoto settings.
