4772.86 kHz Radio Centinela del Sur, Loja (Ecuador) 4/Dic/2003 - 1055 UTC. Reactivated! I have not noted the station for a long time. 3-4 years ago the station was coming in with good signal. Thereafter I have had the station just one week or so with very poor reception in april 2002. Centinela before this day always have been on exactly 4770.07 kHz. This morning on 4772.86 kHz with very good strength. Advertisements and local news from the Loja region. Very positive news indeed! 5392v kHz unID Amigo DXista Dave Valko! I have been checking the unID religious LA you found on 5392 kHz the last week. Im sure it is Spanish or Portugues and it could be a program called "La Voz de la Liberacin". This night I had a station with perhaps the same (???) program and same heavy distorted signal. I hope you can check the Brazilian station on 9565.06 kHz Radio Tupi, Curitiba. I think its the same (???) program in // but Im not sure. /Bjorn Malm, Quito, Ecuador. 5628.80v kHz Radio Cielo, Chiclayo (Per), 11/Dic/2003 - 2355 UT. The last year I have noted Radio Cielo just 1 or 2 times and this is the first time I have recorded an ID with QTH: "Desde la ciudad de Chiclayo transmite Radio Cielo". Good signal but distorted audio. Is still on air when Im sending this information. You can listen to the recording at SWB: http://homepage.sverige.net/~a-0901/ PERU. 5626.8v- Radio Cielo, Chiclayo, Peru. At 1110 UTC- "Based on Bjorn Malm's log in HCDX & Cumbre, tuned into this freq to hear definite Peruvian music. Clear multiple Radio Cielo IDs at 1121-1122 UTC by male announcer then back to Peruvian music. A single Radio Cielo ID at 1126 UTC. Bjorn listed freq as 5628.8 but I'm getting it more around 5626.8 but the signal is so overmodulated and muffled that it's spread about 2 kHz across 5626-5628 that an exact measurement even to 100 Hz by the NRD-515 was difficult. An occasional ute QRMs the broadcast but not severely". (John Sgrulletta Mahopac, NY Dec 12)

Bjorn Malm: "Denna peruanska pirat har nu en aktiv period med bra signal. Efter att min info om Radio Cielo kommit ut p dom olika mailinglistorna har rapporter om loggningar inkommit frn mnga DXare i USA. First time for many years I have noted LV del Llano on the listed frequency of 6115 kHz. Stable signal with good sound quality but very weak. Colombian "llanero" music and clear IDs. 1100 UTC the colombian anthem followed by some advertisments and religious talk. "LV del Llano orgullosamente colombiana". After the news ads and a program called, I think, "Amantes en la noche" with fine LA music. I should like to know from Arnaldo Slaen, Buenos Aires in "Conexin Digital" if "101 FM" has been on this frequency before?I know that other stations in Argentina has used the frequency. FM101 sale esporadicamente en esta frecuencia. Fue reportada algunos meses atras por el amigo Nicolas Eramo. Creo que yo nunca la escuche en esta QRG pero lo que es cierto es que en esta frecuencia, es habitual sintonizar distintas emisoras de onda media porteas, lo mismo que dos FM`s (105,5 y FM100) pero muy de tanto en tanto, como antes te decia, se toma la transmision de esta FM. 73's Arnaldo.

Recording catches (from NRD525/535 yahoo group)
What is the best way to connect my 525 to my computer to record catches? I tried the four audio outputs from my radio to my computer and all of the connections introduce computer hash. I am using a laptop with a "mic" input, the only one on the computer. Do I need an isolation transformer of some kind? (Bill Harms) -------------------------I have had no trouble with recording off my receivers (including two 525's) - however I have used the line-in, not mic input. If you don't have a line input on your laptop, you may want to consider an external soundboard like Creative Soundblaster MP3+, it connects to a USB port and has two phono inputs for stereo audio. Can be fastened to the laptop cover with velcro. I use this one on one of my (none line-in) laptops and it works like a gem. Creative says USD 59.99, maybe cheaper elsewhere. Btw I have found that recording off the 525's external speaker output is just as fine as using the line-out, since you can adjust output level with the AF Gain. The audio quality seems to be identical. (Regards, Bjarne Mjelde Berlevag, Arctic Norway) ------------------------For recording, try Total Recorder from www.highcriteria.com. It lets you record in most formats, including wav and mp3 in many bitrates, and it has a user-selectable time buffer so that you won't miss an ID because you were too late to hit the Record button. Can also be used for automatic recording at specified times and duration. Extremely easy to scan an audio file since you can jump forward or backwards at intervals you choose (2, 4, 8, 16 seconds etc). You can also select a part of the recording and save the selection. A registered standard version costs USD 12, the trial version is fully working but restricted to recording 40 seconds at a time. Another useful too which I haven't tested is RecAll Pro, from www.sagebrush.com. It can be VOX activated. (Regards, Bjarne Mjelde Berlevag, Arctic Norway) ---------------------------Bill, I use two programs for audio recording on my receivers (one of which is a 5255). The first program is called Yamp 2.3. pretty conventional in operation but with a really nice graphic display and it has a built in timer function. http://www.softuarium.com/index.htm The second program is called Loop Recorder. I discovered this one from a link at Radio Netherlands. It is a great audio recorder program that in normal operation runs a continuous recording loop. The default is 10 minutes. At any time you can change it to continuous and then stop, edit and save. http://www.looprecorder.de/ This is a great program for those of us who are slow at turning on the recorder. As long as you get to it within the fixed loop period you can change it to continuous and never loose the beginning of the program. I have tried a number of other programs but found myself gravitating towards these two. They are not free but they are not expensive either. I can't recall seeing a laptop without a line in before. many without a mic input except on their docks. Anyway, always want to use a high level input if you can. Hmmmmmmmmmm, I recall that there is a third audio program that I don't have loaded on this computer at the moment. It was more of an editor and organizer. Maybe I'll remember it later. (73, Jerald)

FL-33 9.01MHz IF filter for R71
I received my FL-33 9.01MHz IF filter yesterday and quickly installed it into my R71, following all the instructions in Don Moman's excellent R71 Performance Manual. The thing is, I can't hear any difference with it installed. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to check if it's actually working or not. I replaced the stock 455KHz 3rd IF 6KHz ceramic filter with an LFH4S from Kiwa a few months ago. This has a -6dB bandwidth of 6KHz, a shape factor of about 1:1.7 and an ultimate rejection of 70-75 dB. The FL-33 also has a -6dB bandwidth of 6KHz and a shape factor of about 1:2. It has an ultimate rejection of about 90dB. Because the Kiwa is slightly tighter, I didn't expect to hear much difference on any but the most powerful signals, but while switching between the on and off positions on the filter switch on the main board, I could detect no difference at all. Even removing and re-inserting the FL-33 produced no detectable difference to my ears, or to the reading on the S meter. I had imagined that the filter would make a difference in ultimate rejection. To test this, I tuned in the strongest AM signal on Medium Wave, tuned about 5 or 6KHz away until I could only hear a bit of splatter, and then flicked the filter switch between on and off. Again, no difference between the Kiwa alone, and the Kiwa preceded by the FL-33. I used short wires between the snipped ends of resistors R58 and R52, as recommended in the performance manual, and this had the result I expected, namely causing a 2KHz offset in the narrow AM mode, but I'm wondering if I should be able to hear a difference with the FL-33 in AM wide. Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks Andy via rec.radio.shortwave

K9AY loop with vactrols

Im planning to build a K9AY loop with vactrols in the terminating system (to be able to obtain improved nulls). Is there anyone out there who can help me with the wiring diagrams for the relay box and the control box for the antenna system using vactrols. I doesnt have the slightest idea how to connect the vactrols into the system. If you want to build the K9AY loop, I can recommend the following maillist: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/K9AYloop/ Or to subscribe by email: K9AYloop-subscribe@yahoogroups.com The list is joined by some very enthuiastic and competent people. So you should be able to get a lot of valueable information for your building project. On the groups webpage you should be able to download the diagram you request. You need to be a member of the group to be able to download files! /Jens Soendergaard, Randers, DENMARK. via HCDX -------------------Try this: http://members.aol.com/DXerCapeCod/pennant.pdf Chuck Hutton, via HCDX -------------------http://www.radio-portal.org/ Search for Vactrol (Regards, Willi, DJ6JZ via HCDX)

Timewave 599 DSP

Does anyone have any experience with the Timewave 599 DSP unit for MW DX? I was wondering if it would be a benefit to add one to my shack? Are they worth the money? They run $400-$500 US. Thanks. (73s, Patrick Martin via HCDX) ---------------Hi, Patrick! I own two units and absolutely love them for cleaning up the random noises and whistles that are so prevalent. I too found them a bit pricey, so I purchased both units used (with the latest firmware)--one on eBay, and the other via a friend. Wouldn't do without them!!! There's usually at least one on eBay at any given time, and go for between $250 and $300 or so. Other guys (like Guy Atkins) prefer the NIR 12 unit (I think I have the model correct), though my observation seems to indicate that the majority of users prefer the Timewave. WRTH and PWBR most popular
(Wednesday, October 08 2003)
With 997 votes in the recent Hard-Core-DX.com website poll. it is clear: Passport for World Band Radio and World Radio TV Handbook remains the most popular reference books for DXers. 1. Passport for World Band Radio - 351 votes (35.21%) 3. Klingenfuss Shortwave Guide - 123 (12.34%) 5. NRC AM Radio Log - 37 (3.71%) 2. World Radio TV Handbook - 337 (33.80%) 4. Sender und Frequenzen - 54 (5.42%) 6. Tropical Band List - 32 (3.21%) 7. European FM Handbook - 29 (2.91%)
Please understand that this is not a scientific study. Although, we believe it verifies the assumption that two leading books for DXers are still World Radio TV Handbook and Passport for World Band Radio. They both received almost equal amount of votes so declaring either one of them the most favourite wouldn't be fair. While the poll was open they both held #1 positions and when the poll closed PWBR ended up 14 votes ahead. As the end of the year is approaching again, it's also a good time to order these books for the next year. You can support Hard-CoreDX.com and help us providing the services to you by ordering these books through us. You can preorder them through these URLs: World Radio TV Handbook 2004 for $ 20.97 (savings of $ 8.98): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0823059685/hardcoredxcom Passport for World Band Radio 2004 for $ 16.07 (savings of $ 6.88): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0914941844/hardcoredxcom Thank you to everyone who voted in the poll. KE9OA's High Performance MW Receiver
Things have been going a million miles an hour! Right now, I am working on a low noise VCO design, with a tracking filter at the output. I have also been looking at a dual conversion chipset that Phillips came out with for the auto radio industry. These devices are used in the Cambridge Audio Model T500 FM/AM Tuner. Performance is pretty amazing on the MW band, although FM sounds like every other tuner, which isn't bad. They are using a DSP for the final demodulation process. Also, I am working on an active loopstick antenna. I was able to locate a source of 8 inch ferrite rod stock, for only $1.50 each. Elna is the supplier, distributing rod stock that Phillips manufacturers. I am testing some of that stock that has a mu of 900. I think that this should yield a nice high Q coil. Another thing that I want to do is have the loop tiltable, like the Palomar loop, except that this will be a shielded design. I am thinking about 125 to 150 dollars for the antenna; what are your thoughts? Also, what about a regeneration circuit.would this be a good thing? As far as the receiver itself, we have located a pretty good CPU.my boss wants to put in some fancy features, such as a spectrum display, etc. I would also like to aim this receiver at the average person, so I am thinking about bass and treble controls. We are still thinking about some of those other features that you folks asked about. I know that Sync Detection is a pretty hot feature, but I haven't figured out how to easily do it yet. It is a great feature, when it is done right, but I don't want it to suffer the R75 curse! I have been revisiting the Analog Devices AD607 chip; this would make Sync AM possible, but this chip doesn't have envelope detection. Analog Devices only has an application note for a 10.7MHz I.F. so at 455kHz, I am on my own. Still, it looks like an easier device to implement than some of the other devices on the market, meaning that it doesn't require other support chips. This difficult part is getting that phase shift network to work properly. I fiddled with this device a few years ago, and gave up on it, but who knows? Maybe I will have better luck this time around. Right now, at work, there is a super big project that they are trying to wrap up, so most of the design time has been on my own time, and with 60+ hours a week, there hasn't been a lot of spare time, with the wife and all. I am still going to put this thing into existance; if you folks are as picky as me, you might not be happy with the current MW offerings either. Just to let all of you know..I haven't forgotten about any of you! (Pete, rec.radio.shortwave) INTERNATIONAL VACUUM. EMERGING TECHNOLOGY: SOUND OF A BLACK HOLE From the science page this question. Did you know that the voice of a black hole is a deep, deep bass? In fact, its 57 octaves below middle C. It is and Jim Meachen, ZL2BHF, has more: The Chandra X-ray Observatory has picked up sound waves for the first time from a cluster of galaxies 250 million light years away. Astronomers at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge, England, discovered the sound waves while analyzing the Chandra images of the Perseus cluster. This is an immense grouping of galaxies held in formation by the powerful tug of a super massive black hole. Andy Fabian is a professor at the Institute of Astronomy. He says that a close study of the fine detail collected by Chandra shows ripples in the X-ray pattern that are caused by sound waves excited by the energy from the black hole.

Fabiam says that the sound produced by the black hole is a B flat, the same pitch as a key near middle C on the piano. But the song of the Presses Black Hole is 57 octaves below that middle C. This is a tone or frequency more than a million, billion times deeper than the limits of the human ear. Fabian says that makes it the lowest note known in the universe. For the Amateur Radio Newsline I`m Jim Meachen, ZL2BHF, in New Zealand. Scientists expect more insight on this as the experiments progress. "Ferrell's Confidential Frequency List (via rec.radio.shortwave) Saw this book offering at the Universal Radio site. "Ferrell's Confidential Frequency List By Kevin Nice. Printed in August 2003. Here is your affordable guide to the fascinating world of shortwave non-broadcast listening. Includes: aero, coast, fax, press, fixed, embassy, military, volmet, maritime and time stations. " Sounds interesting, but would sure appreciate any opinions on, as for $32 it's not exactly cheap. Useful? Worth it? etc. Thanks, Bob ---------------------------A very good reference. This is a revised and updated "Confidential Frequency List" type book, of the type and layout that was originally published by Gilfer Short-wave in the 1980's. Highly recommended! Kris A oneday only Swedish radio station will be active from Gothenburg on January 15th
A oneday only Swedish radio station will be active from Gothenburg, Sweden on January 15th. 2004 at 16.30 UTC on 981 KHz. It is the radioamateurs in Gothenburg (Gteborgs Sndareamatrer - GSA) that will be on air, in rememerence of K.G. Eliasson (1884 1951) who on that day 80 years ago (January 15th. 1924) had his first regular broadcast from the localities on Vallgatan 8 in Gothenburg. Now this old broadcast will be on the air again with the help of GSA and with the signal SMZX. The program starts at 16.30 UTC with a presentation, and then at 17.00 UTC the historical rebroadcast will start. GSA wants reports of reception of this historical event, and promises to answer them with a special QSL-card. More can be found on http://www.scandiham.com/ (Swedish). The Chariman is Lars Westerlund phone: +46 (0)or by email: sm6etr@svessa.se. Best regards Jan Edh, Hudiksvall, Sweden (DX-ing in Fredriksfors).
