Troubleshooting TerraTec Remote Control
Note: This documentation can be used as a guide for all TerraTec products from the Cingery Series and the TerraTec Series regarding problems using the TerraTec Remote Control! So if your Remote Control not working properly or not working at all, hopefully this guide will help you to solve the problem: Is the infrared receiver connected to the PCI card / USB stick? Some of our products are delivered with an external infrared receiver, others have an integrated receiver. PCI cards normaly have an external receiver which gets connected to the card / PC via USB cable or 3.5 mm mini jack. The USB sticks normaly have an integrated receiver, only exception is the Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS. Please check in the manual if the delivery should contain an infrared receiver and then please connect the device with the TV card to enable the use of the remote control
Please check first of all the if the delivery contains all parts that are shown in the manual: 1. TerraTeck Cinergy S2 PCI HD 2. Remote Control and Batteries 3. Infrared Receiver
Is the software for the Remote Control Editor installed on the system? The software is nessecary because it passes the commands coming from the remote control to the PC. The TerraTec Home Cinema and the remote control software are two independent programs and can be started and closed seperately. However in order to use the remote control in the Home Cinema the remote control has to be active. If the software is active, you will see a tray icon like the one on the picture below.
. When the software is currently active you can open the browser with a double click on the tray icon as shown on the picture above. In case that the program is not running you can find the starter by following the next steps: Start(Windows button) (All)Programs TerraTec TerraTec Home Cinema Tools Remote Control Editor To make sure that your remote control is selected, please go to the Options of the software and check, if the picture matches the remote control you have. In case that you cant find the software in the Startmenue or there is no device found, the software has been installed without a device connected / installed. To solve the problem, please install the driver for the device and make sure that it is connected to the PC, then run the TerraTec Home Cinema Setup (either from CD or Download from our website) again.
Page 1
When the driver and software are installed correctly and you open the Remote Control Editor, your TerraTec product should appear under the Options of the Editor as shown in the pricture below.
Another possible error source could be that a wrong preset for the remote control is choosen. Please open the command setings, then select the TerraTec Home Cinema entry and proceed by clicking on thebutton with the tool image on it (picture below).
Please check if the selected preset is the one for your remote control. An easy way is to compare the image of the remote control shown with the one delvivered with the product. Select your remote control the proceed with one click on Next.
The remote control now is ready for the use with the Home Cinema and if you press the House-Button while the Home Cinema is running, ithe software menue should open on your monitor. (if there is no HouseButton try the one with OSD on it) For further Informations please read the Remote Control Editor Manual on the driver CD included in the package. <CD-Drive>Manuals\English\Remote Control Editor\ Remote Control Editor en.pdf or on our Website ftp://ftp.terratec.de/Accessories/RemoteControl/Manual/RemoteControlEditor_Manual_EN.pdf How can I completely uninstall the Remote Control Editor? In case that the remote control is not working properly a new installation of the software can fix the problem. Therefor you have to close the Remote Control Editor and remove the whole folder. Welcome!
We're pleased that you have chosen a sound system by TerraTec and would like to congratulate you on this decision. With this development, the highest-quality audio technology is finally at your disposal in the form of an attractive external device. You've purchased a sophisticated product representing the state of the art of audio technology, and we're convinced that our product will prove extremely useful to you in the coming years and provide you with a great deal of entertainment. This manual covers the SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire and its uses in all its pretty details.
SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire
Range of connections. The SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire is the result of our many years of experience in the PC audio sector and reflects the continuous evolution of audio and multimedia software for the PC. The SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire offers you a wide range of interconnection options with other audio devices such as hi-fi surround systems, MiniDisc or CD players with analog or digital outputs, headphones and microphones. High-quality audio characteristics. The SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire allows extremely high-quality analog recording and playback of audio material; the module offers studio-quality, 24 bit/192 kHz playback. (On page 11 (Installing the software.), you can find out how to check which version of Windows you are running). Under these conditions, the Aureon 7.1 FireWire achieves a S/N ratio of well over -100 dB(A) on its analog inputs and outputs!

First, select the desired language and click Next >.
If you have already connected the module, disconnect it for the time being by unplugging the FireWire plug from the sound module and click Next >.
(This symbol marks the FireWire jack.) If you have not yet established the connection, just click Next >. SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire (English) 13
If you want to copy the software to the default directory, click Next >. If you want to select a different folder for installation, click Change.
Relax now and follow the instructions on the screen.
Don't be worried if a window similar to the one in the picture appears. It's not as bad as it lookssimply click Continue Anyway and everything will be fine.
Why? This error message indicates that the TerraTec drivers have not been certified by Microsoft. Unfortunately, in individual cases, this certification may mean that certain functions cannot be offered, because they deviate from the norm. Therefore, and for your benefit, we have refrained from obtaining this certification for the time being. Don't worry, there is a reason for everything.
14 SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire (English)
This window appears after the installation routine is complete, and prompts you to connect the module and switch it on.
But before you click OK: The following chapter contains a few more sentences about the connection of your FireWire module from a hardware standpoint.
The FireWire connection
Different symbols, but only one meaning. Regardless of whether your notebook or desktop , all of computer marks the connections with FireWire, iLink, 1394 or simply with a them mean the same thing: the Aureon 7.1 FireWire (or other FireWire devices) is connected correctly. The jack on your PC can have either of two various forms: 4-pin This port, which is significantly smaller than the other kind, is found mostly on notebooks. This kind of jack is found in most FireWire expansion cards and onboard controllers of motherboards. According to the FireWire specification, the two additional contacts provide a power supply of 5V/1A.
More about ports. If your PC has a 6-pin plug, you can, in principle, use your Aureon 7.1 FireWire without the included power adapter. We can only say in principle, though, because despite the clear specifications, some controllersparticularly those that use the cheapest componentshave problems providing a constant supply of the voltage necessary. Unfortunately, according to our tests, the overwhelming majority of the PCMCIA and PC card bus controllers were unable to guarantee the power supply. Better use Cameo. Thus, to be on the safe side when using a PCI insert card, we recommend that you use a controller which allows an additional internal port for connecting a PC power adapter. To make a long story short, it is best to use the wonderful TerraTec FireWire card from the Cameo DV series. Compatible cables for both the large and small jacks are included in the delivery of
For more information on selecting this input for audio recording with the control software, please see page 25 (The Playback window.).
The line input
A line input is located on the rear of the Aureon SoundSystem. You can us it to connect analog devices with line outputs, such as the audio output of a radio or video recorder. If you are not using a cassette deck, a connection to the output on your amplifier marked TAPE OUT will likely be the most convenient connection option. The advantage of this arrangement is that it makes it easy to use the amplifier to determine which of the connected devices will send a signal to this output. This selector will usually be marked on the amplifier with TAPE RECORD SELECT or something similar. For more information on recording from this input, see page 27 (Recording? And how!). The input is designed for a voltage level of 2 Vrms.
The turntable (Phono) input
The rear of the module also has a special input for recording from a turntable without having an amplifier being switched in between. The built-in phono preamp allows you to connect the player directly to it, and the necessary equalization is performed within the module. To eliminate the possibility of power-line hum, connect the ground cable of your turntable to the Aureon 7.1 FireWire sound module. To do this, use the included RCA grounding adapter. Please ensure that your turntable uses a so-called moving magnet (MM, MD) pickup system. The SoundSystem is not optimized for connection of a moving coil (MC) system, which is a rarer variety of pickup. If you would like to use an MC system nevertheless, please ensure that it generates a minimum output voltage of 2-3 mV (please refer to the documentation of the pickup system).
18 SoundSystem Aureon 7.1 FireWire (English)
Thus you can use this input to transfer music from your old vinyl collection directly to your hard drive, process it and archive it on CD. You can find the required software on the included CD-ROM, along with tips and tricks to help you along.
The digital input
With this input, located on the back of the module (DIGITAL IN), you can connect devices using an optical cable (also called a fiber-optic cable or Toslink cable). For example, you can connect the output of a digital amplifier, so that you can record the output of devices which are connected to it on your PC using suitable software (such as WaveLab etc.). Of course, you can also connect the optical output of a MiniDisc recorder to this input to preserve old favorites in MD format on your hard drive. S/PDIF? Like the digital output this input also uses the S/PDIF (Sony / Philips Digital Interface) protocol. If at first this term means nothing to you, don't worryit is THE standard protocol for digital transfer of audio signals; unless otherwise specified, almost every device with a digital interface supports it. There can be only one. If you have ever connected two digital S/PDIF audio devices to each other, you may already be familiar with the distinction between master and slave. This hierarchy in the dialog between two devices ensures lossless transfer of audio data, and that the transfer is at the correct frequency. This is because one device sets the pace (the master) and the other device(s) follows that pace (the slave). With the Aureon, you can configure this setting in a way that is fully automatic. The digital interfacein this case more specifically the outputfunctions as the master until you have connected a device to the optical input and selected it as the external source via the ControlPanel. As such, you will not be able to find mention of the terms master and slave, as they have given way to a better, more simplified method. For more information on selecting the sampling frequency and configuring the other settings via the ControlPanel, please see page 27 (Advanced settings.).
STEREO FRONT (L) STEREO FRONT (R)
for the two front speakers Left (L) and Right (R)
4.1 REAR (L) 4.1 REAR (R)
for the two rear speakers Left (L) and Right (R)
5.1 CENTER (C) 5.1 SUBWOOFER (SW)
for the center speaker (C) and subwoofer (SW)
7.1 SURROUND (L) 7.1 SURROUND (R)
for the two surround speakers Left (L) and Right (R)
Of course, stereo too. As you can see, you can use the first stereo output for connecting cables to a stereo system or active speakers. The output for the two front speakers is switched parallel to the digital stereo output and the headphone output on the module. Please remember that the headphone amplifier, and thus the headphone volume, can be controlled independently of the system volumetherefore, if you cannot hear anything, you should check both places. Software DVD player. Of course, the included CD also features an optimized software DVD player. If a DVD-ROM drive is installed on your system, the DVD player allows you to decode the theater-quality audio for your cinematic enjoyment, and to pass on each signal to the correct speaker. You can also pass on the undecoded signal (as an AC3 and DTS data stream) to an external decoder via the optical digital output. 4.1 is 4.0 is 4.1. If you want to integrate the module into a 4.1 system, connect the two rear speakers to the second stereo output according to the labels. Strictly speaking, the 4.1 designation is slightly misleadingas the digits may lead one to believe that the system has five separate channels, also referred to as discrete channels. For commercially available 4.1 speaker systems, the.1 channel, which is the audio information for the subwoofer, is taken from the other channels. All outputs are designed for a voltage level of 2 Vrms.
The digital output
The optical digital output is located on the rear of the module (DIGITAL OUT). You can connect an optical cable (also called a fiber-optic cable) to this output, for example to connect a digital amplifier. The advantage of digitally transferring the audio signal from the Aureon to a corresponding amplifier is, among other things, the fact that no interferenceas may occur in analog transfercan interfere with the signal and reduce its quality. You can also connect the optical input of a MiniDisc recorder to this output to record the music played back by the Aureon on MD.
Again, a note on S/PDIF! This output uses the S/PDIF (Sony / Philips Digital Interface) protocol. If at first this term means nothing to you, don't worryit is THE standard protocol for digital transfer of audio signals; unless otherwise specified, almost every device with a digital interface supports it. Technology. The digital interface supports bit-precise output of digital signals in all relevant resolutions up to 24-bit, at a frequency of up to 96 kHz.
Using the outputs as individual outputs (ASIO)
If you want to enter a more ambitious area of audio production, you can also address the various outputs or the input via the Steinberg ASIO interface. This special driver architecture is designed for fast and error-free transfer of audio signals. This way, you can address various software synthesizers with almost no latency, allowing you to use them in compositions and arrangements. However, the latency is directly dependent on the performance of your system as a whole, and therefore can vary greatly. To allow error-free operation on an individual basis, various latencies can be set using the ControlPanelfor more information, see page 27 (Advanced settings.). Similar to many other applications, here, too, it is true that the greater the performance of your system, the smaller the possible latencies. The applications or software synthesizers that you may be using, too, vary greatly in their use of system resources. Which output, which number? Instead of the identifying designation, some ASIO applications offer only numbers for selecting the inputs and outputs. Therefore, based on the following example of the Steinberg WaveLab audio editing software, we will show you how to use the ASIO interface of the Aureon instead of normal Windows drivers. We have chosen to use Version 4.0 in our example: First, switch off the Sensaura feature (see page 27 Advanced settings.). Start Steinberg Wavelab. Press CTRL+P to open the input dialog. Go to the SOUNDCARD tab. In the PLAYBACK/RECORDING dialog, select ASIO for Aureon FireWire instead of MME/WDM Aureon 7.1 FireWire Out.
The dialog shown above opens.
Now, uncheck the entry Limit to 2 outputs to enable all outputs.
You now have the option of selecting the corresponding stereo output here.
The assignments are as follows: 1+2 3+4 5+6 7++ 10 STEREO FRONT ( L ) + STEREO FRONT ( R ) 5.1 CENTER ( C ) + 5.1 SUBWOOFER ( SW ) 4.1 REAR ( L ) + 4.1 REAR ( R ) 7.1 SURROUND ( L ) + 7.1 SURROUND ( R ) DIGITAL OUT ( L ) + DIGITAL OUT ( R )
If after selecting output via ASIO, do not worry if you don't hear anything right away; it is possible that the stereo output you have selected is not the one you have actually connected. WaveLab is not designed to use multiple outputs simultaneously. However, such simultaneous use is supported in applications including Steinberg's Nuendo and Cubase SX, as well as Magic's Samplitude and others.
The ControlPanel
During setup of the software described at the beginning, not only are the necessary driver files for the operating system copied, but the Aureon ControlPanel will also have been copied to your hard drive. The ControlPanel is the software control center for your Aureon 7.1. In addition to the many settings you are able to configure, you can also save them and retrieve them later if desired. Start the ControlPanel by clicking the speaker icon which has been installed on your desktop, or via Start > Programs > TerraTec > Aureon 7.1 FireWire > ControlPanel. You can see whether the ControlPanel is currently active in memory by looking for the small speaker icon next to the clock. Clicking on this icon will cause the panel to appear; clicking it again minimizes it.
Settings. You can save and retrieve the current settings of the ControlPanel in this section. In addition to the pure volume control and source selection, these settings include all the other options you have selected. We advise always saving at least the most common and frequently used settings, so that you have a verified fallback setup if you ever suffer from the Why aren't I hearing anything? problem. Autostart. If you enable this switch, the ControlPanel starts automatically every time you start Windows, and you can go to it by clicking the icon in the task bar to the left of the clock. Colors. If you click this button, an options menu appears in which you can adjust the color of the ControlPanel to suit your taste. Don't be shy: Ocher-beige never goes out of style. Languages. Surprise! This pulldown menu allows you to set the desired languages. A tip for hardcore users. In the ControlPanel directory, there are LNG files which stand for the individual languages, and can be edited using a simple text editor. If you want, you can change those languages to any exotic dialect of your choosing. Have fun!
The remote control.
The Remote Control Editor.
To install the application required to use the remote control, run the software setup using AutoStart or by directly accessing the Setup.exe file from the directory <CD>:\Software\TerraTec\Remote Control\Setup.exe. Select the appropriate language, then follow the instructions on the screen.
Once the setup routine has been completed successfully, you should see a small remote control icon in your taskbar. Your remote control is now ready to control a few basic functions. You can raise and lower the playback volume of your system by pressing Vol Up and Vol Down. So that operation via remote control will be as effective as possible, the TerraTec Remote Control Editor control software has the capability to forward commands to all Windows applications. For greater convenience, set up the most frequently used applications for remote control. The menu If you have not made any changes, the window displayed to the right appears, with similar contents. This overview shows the currently loaded settings for various applications. Of course, some of the applications which appear in the screenshot may not be set up on your system. In order to select other sets of commands than these, or to switch these off, simply click the corresponding field and a dialog window opens with all command sets and the entry ---. Select the entry to disable this menu input. In the default settings, you can reach this menu via the APP button of the remote control as an OSD (On Screen Display) menu.
New command set Copy command set Copy command set (or double-click a command set) Delete command set Reset command set to original settings Show assignment as an HTML file.
To make it easier for you to navigate using the program icons, you can change the view so that the icons are displayed larger, if this is not already configured by default. From the Open dialog, it is best to select Thumbnails as the menu view. Now, select an application to be controlled. Using the optional input for command-line parameters, you can, for example, send the parameter C:\My Music\Hits.m3u to WinAmp (as the selected application), which calls up a playlist when WinAmp starts. If you enter a window caption under Window identification, this may help to identify the application more quickly, allowing you to control it more efficiently. However, please note that many applications change this title, and integrate, for example, the document name of the last file loaded into the title. Now click Next >. 2. Program the remote control
This takes you to the most important window for assigning functions to buttons. Because this software is also included with the delivery of other products, you can use the Remote control pulldown menu to select the TerraTec product you want to use right now. Below it, you see the name of the button you have just pressed, in this case Channel +. This is also indicated by a red outline around the image of the remote control. The various outline colors have the following additional meanings: Green default assignment; Orange user-defined, i.e. created or changed by you; and Blue preset. Unfortunately, things now become a little more complicated. Because of the wide range of options provided for command assignments, we won't try to provide a thorough description of every parameter here, but just an overview of them in table form. The possible commands can be subdivided into five areas using the Command type and Parameters pulldown menus:
On-screen display menu (OSD) On Screen Display functions such as the clock etc. System command Execute or assign basic functions of the operating system. Key combination Anything you can do from the keyboard can also be programmed here. Window Functions that are familiar from usual window menus, such as maximize etc. Control element For hardcore users only: In Windows, all program buttons and menus are identified using unique designations, which can be used in commands to jump to them. Thus, it is also possible to use them via the remote control. As a rule, though, the functional areas listed above are sufficient for household use.
Here is a detailed overview of the individual functions, listed according to command type parameter
On-screen display menu (OSD)
Display parameter Function
Main menu Software info Time System command Parameter type On/off
The options Now, about the options: There, you can switch the on-screen display menu (OSD) on and off completely, and modify its display options. If you have installed more than one TerraTec product with infrared receivers, here you can choose which one you want enabled. You can select the Start with Windows option to ensure that the Remote Control Editor loads automatically to manage the command sets each time the system is started.
Standalone mode.
The Aureon 7.1 FireWire can provide enjoyment even without a PC. Even without an active FireWire connection, the high-quality converters live up to their reputation.
This means that you can use the remote control to switch between sources, and thus output digital signals as analog signals and vice versa. If none of the LEDs that indicate the selected source is lit up, the digital input is selected. Selecting an input using the remote control in standalone mode: 1 Phono IN 2 LINE IN 3 Mic IN 0 Digital In
This means that a signal received via the digital input can be output via the analog output and vice versa. However, the Aureon module is, of course, not a standalone DolbyDigital Decoder. This means that the incoming digital signal should be a standard PCM signal, and not a data signal such as those used for AC3 or DTS. The converted signal is output at the first line output. As in regular operating mode, the master volume controller controls the volume. Of course, if no FireWire connection has been established, it is understood that you must supply the module with the power it requires by plugging in the power adapter.
Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0
1. Overview Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0 is a powerful tool that lets you clean up problematic material such as older recordings, directly on your PC. It lets you remove or significantly reduce unwanted noise while maintaining the authentic sound and quality of the original recording. Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0 is an ideal compliment to recording and CD programs, especially if you want to eternalize all of your tape cassettes and vinyl treasures even your shellac phonograph records on CD. Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0 offers a vast variety of functions and is specially developed for the multimedia user who does not want to spend hours learning complicated editing processes or use the multitude of parameter settings necessary for other professional software. For the two editing modules, Descratcher and Denoiser, only two parameters need to be set to achieve optimal sound, which normally takes only a few seconds to do. You can adjust these settings with no trouble during realtime playback. Likewise, you can adjust the volume and tone (bass and treble) of the cleaned output signal to remaster dusty recordings.
2. Click the button to open the Select Input File menu. Select the WAV file that you want to process. The file you selected is loaded and its waveform is displayed in the Waveform window. 3. Start playback with the button. You should now hear the audio material and be able to view the level-control indicator. In the Analyzer window, the frequency profiles of the input and output signals are dynamically displayed as is the noise print. You can pause playback with the button and rewind back to the beginning of the clip by clicking. During playback, you can restart playback at any position you like simply by clicking the position in the Waveform window. 4. If your recording contains sudden popping noises, use the Declick adjuster to try to filter them out. 5. If your recording has humming or buzzing noises or, in the case of a recording from an LP record, a constant background crackling, use the Decrackle adjuster to filter it out. 6. To reduce or remove noises such as tape static or constant LP surface noises, use the Denoiser feature by adjusting the threshold and reduction adjusters. 7. To compare the original sound with the filtered signal, click the 8. Use the button.
function to listen to the noise that has been filtered out.
9. Adjust the volume slide so that the volume level never quite reaches the red range. 10. Use the position. button to clip off the extra audio material to the left of the current marker
11. Click to save the remastered audio material to a new file. Saved files are in 16bit/44.1-kHz format. 12. Click to optimize the loudness level of the audio material.
13. If you click the button, the current audio material is sent to the associated burning software as a new track. Simply repeat this step to instantly put together an audio CD, which you can then burn. 14. The functions of the parameters for the Descratcher and Denoiser features are described in the chapters entitled, Descratcher, Denoiser and Application Notes. 3. User Interface Editing Area The editing area of Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0 consists of four main components: Descratcher (on the left), Denoiser (on the right), Analyzer (in the center) and the adjustment sliders for bass/treble/volume (on the bottom). Two sound-level meters let you control the output level while, at the same time, you can adjust the volume and the bass and treble levels using the sliders mentioned above.
Because the processor requirements of Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0 are quite low (about 30 % for a 300 MHz Pentium II for a WAV file with 16-bit, stereo and 44.1 kHz), you can optimize all of the parameters and simultaneously hear the results in realtime while editing your tracks.

lets you listen separately to the noises that are being filtered out during processing in realtime. lets you listen to the input signal by bypassing the DeScratcher and DeNoiser filters. indicates the CPU usage of the computer, i.e. the percentage of CPU time being used by Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0. Analyzer graphically displays the volume and frequency curves, which is useful for visually verifying the filter levels. effectively removes pops and crackling from the audio material. removes noise and static from the audio material.
A typical popping noise in a signal from a vinyl record (left) and the reconstructed signal (right).
The higher you set the Decrackle parameter, the more crackling noise is removed from the original. The highest setting, nearly 100, dampens the actual input signal. In general, this parameter can be set to 80 without resulting in any audible depletion of the original sound. In some cases, an extremely high setting, even up to 100, can be used to improve the quality of the audio material. To minimize the depletion of the original sound in the Descratching procedure, you should listen very carefully to the effects of the Declick and Decrackle parameters at various points of the recording before deciding on their final values. In doing so, the Difference function in the Playback area will certainly be a great aid. It allows you to set the parameters in a very intuitive manner. With it, you can switch between the original input signal and the input/output signal difference, i.e. the part that has been removed by the Descratching algorithm. Normally, you do not want the signal difference to contain any part of the original signal that you want to keep. For more notes on optimizing the settings of the Declick and Decrackle parameters, see to the Application Notes. Note also that the Difference functions can be applied to the Descratcher and Denoiser functions simultaneously. If you want to run the Descratcher only, leave the sliders (threshold and reduction) for the Denoiser set to 0.
7. Denoiser The Denoiser belongs to the noise reduction systems. It does not require any special coding method prior to recording, such as that required by the familiar tape noise reduction system by DOLBY Lab. The Denoiser efficiently removes all types of wideband noises from recorded audio tracks. The Algorithmix Denoiser is used to remove tape hiss, static noise in telephone clips and residual noise on old records after they have been edited using the Descratcher. This version of the Denoiser uses a typical wideband noise print that has been optimized for reducing surface noise on vinyl records and tape hiss. The noise reduction process of the Denoiser is controlled by only two parameters, making it easy to optimize the results for various output material. The frequency band of the input signal (red), the noise print used for processing the audio material (white) and the frequency band of the output signal after processing (green) can be viewed in the Analyzer window. The noise print (white) indicates the threshold value beyond which no more noise reduction takes place. You can move this noise print up and down using the threshold parameter. You can also use this parameter to adjust the noise print so that it is just above the backgroundnoise level. At a specific threshold, the reduction parameter then determines the range of removed noise within the selected noise print. A good starting point for the threshold is to set the noise print just above the backgroundnoise level (at about 10 dB). Increasing the reduction parameter would then reduce the background noise significantly. If distortions such as whistling sounds or robot-like noises (caused by the phenomenon called time aliasing) are clearly audible, decreasing the reduction parameter and increasing the threshold (to about 30 dB above the backgroundnoise level) usually helps.
If you save your audio files with a sampling frequency other than 44.1kHz (for example, 48 kHz), you will have to convert them to a sampling frequency of 44.1kHz. Here, too, be sure to use a high-quality software application for converting the frequency. Best results are achieved by evaluating the sound with your own ears using the Difference function during playback. This function plays only the sounds that have been filtered out by the Descratching and Denoising algorithms. In the best circumstances, you should only be able to hear noise with this function. If you can detect the presence of the original signal in the Difference signal, the amount of filtering should be decreased.
Important note: Sound Rescue TerraTec Edition 2.0 is a fast and effective tool. You will be amazed by how much you can improve the sound quality of old records and distorted audio files. However, please do not expect any miracles when trying to restore material that contains gaps or jumps. Once the signal has been lost to the point where there is insufficient redundancy in the remaining material, it becomes impossible to recover the original material. In cases as hopeless as these, experienced professional sound editors apply highly complex audio editors to try to copy similar sounding, already existing passages into the gaps. Likewise problematic is the attempt to rescue material that is so full of noise that the original signal can no longer be distinguished. If, for all practical purposes, the information consists almost entirely of noise (an extremely bad signal-to-noise ratio) and there is insufficient information available on the characteristics of the original signal, or even worse, if nonlinear distortions occur too, the quality of the Denoising results will be limited.
