Glossary

DVB Digital Video Broadcasting is a standard which has been developed for the transmission of high quality digital TV and broadcasting. There are three different transmission routes such as via antenna (DVB-T), satellite (DVB-S) and cable (DVB-C). AC-3 / Dolby Digital Dolby Digital (also referred to as AC-3) is a multi-channel sound system developed by Dolby Laboratories that supports up to 6 channels and which uses a proprietary data compression method. HDTV High Definition Television is a collective term which names a series of TV standards which are characterised by a higher vertical, horizontal and/or temporal resolution in comparison with common TV.

H.264 reaches a coding efficiency nearly three times as high as MPEG2 and is capable of resolutions of up to 1920 x 1080 pixel (HDTV). That means a comparable quality is only reachable at a third of the MPEG 2 amount of data. EPG The electronical programme guide is an electronic TV guide. Just click on the desired programme on the screen and the recording is scheduled. Furthermore, more detailed information on the programme and the individual movies are available depending on the channel. TimeShifting TimeShifting enables you to discontinue watching any programme and continue watching it at a later date. The programme will be recorded onto the hard drive after it has been stopped.

Developed in co-operation with Brauner Microphones, Germany The worlds first USB stereo boundary layer microphone really shows its value in its inside components. The iQuader has extremely high-quality microphone input stages and a limiter that reliably prevents digital clipping in any situation, with no impairment of the sound. It is optimally complemented with perfectly tuned, high-quality digital technology which, in addition to the standard formats, can even meet HD requirements with 24-bit resolution at a sampling frequency of 96kHz. This makes it compatible for professional applications perfect for recordings with audio programs such as Logic, Cubase or Garage Band. Simple operation The operation is as simple as could be. Plug the iQuader into an available USB 2.0 input on your computer, set the recording level, and start the recording with your preferred audio software. In addition, validation possibilities for licences and rights are provided. DRM 10 is principally used by legal download services. WMA The Windows Media Audio (WMA) is an audio codec from Microsoft and is part of the Windows Media platform. WMA is used for compressing digital audio contents and is normally used with lossy compression, comparable with the MP3 process. The codec supports up to 24 bit/96 kHz at a variable bit rate of up to 768 kb/s and surround sound with up to 7.1 channels.

MPEG This is a data format for space saving compressing and the saving of high quality video, picture and audio data which is also used for DVDs and digital TV in DVB standard. DivX Digital Video Xtreme is an MPEG 4 compatible video codec, just like Xvid. The codec is known for its ability to compress big video data in good quality. An ordinary DVD has a size of 6 to 8 MB. The movie can be recorded onto one CD-ROM (650 - 700 MB) by using the DivX video compression. The quality still remains high. VCD VCD stands for Video CD and describes a standard with which movies can be recorded onto CDs just like onto DVDs. It can be played with all commercial DVD players as well as CD / DVD drives in computers. The picture quality is comparable with the quality of a VHS tape. SVCD Has a higher picture quality in comparison with VCDs which is freely selectable when compressing in MPEG 2 format. Encoder An encoder compresses audio and video data to provide a faster transferability or a higher picture and audio quality. A decoder is required in order to use the data. Decoder A decoder decompresses audio and video data which have been compressed with an encoder for a faster transferability or a higher picture and audio quality.

The ultra fast AXON Guitar-to-MIDI controller in a single unit rack mount has an early transient recognition system (ETR) which evaluates the impulses from the strings as soon as they are picked and converts them into values for pitch, dynamics and length, opening up a whole new world of music to the guitarist. Never again will you have to change guitars to play different sounds just switch the MIDI channel. The technological background of the AXON
What makes the AXON so fast is its so called Early Transient Recognition (ETR). To understand how it works, lets have a look at the wave signal coming from a magnetic pickup (in this case it is the low E string of a guitar). The beginning of the signal is full of information, contained in the pattern of the signal peaks. These peaks represent the initial picking impulse and the reflections of that impulse on both ends of the string. Imagine you put a drop of milk into your coffee. Depending on the size of your cup and the position where the milk came in, you can see different wave patterns on the surface. Each wave pattern is representative for one cup size and one milk drop. When you watch this many, many times with different cups, you might be able to know the cup and where the milk came in after a while, just by looking at the wave pattern. It will definitely be extremely boring to do this with coffee, and that is the reason why the AXON prefers guitar music. But the principle is more or less the same: Here the cup size is the length of the guitar string from the bridge to your finger and the milk is your pick. The AXONs neural net analyzes if the peak pattern of the incoming signal corresponds to a known pattern. If there is a match, pitch and pick position can be calculated from the peak distances.

The later signal has a more or less statical periodic waveform, where the length of one period corresponds to the pitch of the note you have played. In this part of the signal, the AXON looks for the points where the waveform crosses the zero line with maximum slope. From the distance between these points, it can calculate the correct pitch. This is done permanently to confirm the note recognized by the ETR and to detect frequency changes caused by bends or slides.

Other guitar synthesizers that do not have the patented ETR technology of the AXON can only detect the pitch from this periodic part of the signal. To do that properly, at least three complete periods of the waveform after the initial impulse are needed. As a result, the latency of a guitar synth without ETR is about three times higher compared to the AXON.
