TS AMAZING HOW LITTLE YOU CAN PAY FOR a competent all-in-one surround sound system. This smart little JVC setup costs around 300 less if you search hard online and while it doesnt threaten the sales of either tickets at your local multiplex or the likes of the high-end Denon system on page 74 of this issue of Essential Home Cinema, its level of performance is highly satisfying. For starters it meets many peoples primary concern when looking to buy a system like this: it looks extremely cool. The arched main unit is reminiscent of high-end Marantz systems a few years ago, and obviously blends in well with JVCs InteriArt range of CRT televisions. The speakers too are small and silver, allowing you to dot them around your lounge in close approximation of the optimum 5.1 speaker array with the minimum of domestic upheaval. Only the subwoofer will stick out, but thats the price you pay for being a movie fan who wants to experience surround sound.
Setting it up is as simple as can be
The feature count is also reasonably high, with most flavours of optical disc playable the notable exceptions being DVD+R(W) and any form of high resolution music such as SACD and DVD-A. It can decode both Dolby Digital and DTS datastreams and offers Dolby Pro-Logic II for turning stereo sources into startling surround sound with impressive ease. Setting up the A55 is as simple as can be; just plug in all the supplied cables, plonk the speakers down and youre away! The amount of time you spend tweaking the system
afterwards will depend on the individual, but the longer you spend doing it, the better the resulting performance. That said, even simply setting up and running provides you with a first rate picture performance via the Scart socket (the lack of What we dont like component video is a sure sign of this systems budget upbringing). about this The Scart is still the socket that most all-in-one Sound quality not as people will use to connect up a 300 system and a TV, and here the JVC good as the picture Dark scenes can look performs very well. Watching Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on this kit washed out provides you with a reasonable approximation of the best the disc has to offer. Okay, so some of the dark scenes look a little bit washed out at times, and theres not the level of detail that we know exists on Gandalfs white beard, but for the money this is still impressive stuff. Colour reproduction is also par for the course; whether its the lush colours of Monsters Incs climatic sequence or the more muted tones of the Superbit disc of Gattaca, you get the impression that you are seeing a good facsimile of whats on the disc. Sound quality is slightly less impressive, but given the size and cost of the speakers thats not really surprising. As we mentioned above, both DTS and Dolby Digital are catered for, but it doesnt really make that much difference, as both sound identical when played through the system. That said, the sound is perfectly passable with music. As a word of caution wed ignore the power rating of this system and most of its competitors. It is quite capable of going loud, but as you turn it up the sound quality goes off pretty quickly, and so wed recommend this system for people who like listening at moderate levels. While not groundbreaking, the JVC TH A55 should find a happy home in many peoples living rooms. With a good quality picture and effective surround sound capability it is a solid bet for anyone looking for a discrete and affordable home cinema system. Welcome to Mdina

Mdina is the oldest city on the island of Malta, and a walk through the citys narrow and silent streets is like being transported in a time capsule to another era. It has a history that goes back to pre-historic times, and is relatively untouched by modern development. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. you have the opportunity to explore this fascinating world on your own. This map will help you to find your way around and guide you to the points of interest. At the points of interest marked, guides wearing IFA jackets will provide you with further information about this amazing city. In the caf of the Casa Magazzini, Mdinas former gunpowder vaults, you will be given the possibility of trying Maltese delicacies and refreshments during your stay. The first shuttle back to the Hilton Hotel will be at 4 p.m. from the West Gate. Please note that the last shuttle will be departing at 6 p.m to take guests back to the hotel.
1: The Main Gate / St Publius Square
The baroque gate has been reconstructed in 1724 and it was here that the Universit greeted the newly-elected Grand Masters.

2: Palazzo Vilhena

After the great earthquake in 1693, the Palazzo Giuratale was reconstructed in a magnificent baroque style and became the summer seat of the Grand Master Vilhena.

3: Chapel of St Agatha

This church was originally built in 1417, and is dedicated to St Agatha who is besides St Paul and St Publius one of the three patron saints of Mdina.
4: The Nunnery of St Benedict
The Benedictine nuns in Mdina are first mentioned in 1450. Today, about 20 nuns live here in total isolation, devoting their days to prayer and the maintenance of the garden.

5: Casa Testaferrata

Mdina Tour Guide
The seat of the old noble family Testaferrata. It was from the balcony of this house that the French Commander was thrown, an incident which marked the beginning of the Maltese uprising against the French Occupation.

6: Carmelite Church

The present Carmelite Church was built between the years 1630 and 1690 on plans by Francesco Sammut.
7: Palazzo Falzon (Norman House)
The best-preserved medieval building in Mdina is Palazzo Falzon, generally known as the Norman House.

8: Bastion Square

This place on the extreme peak of the fortifications offers an overwhelming view of the landscape of Malta.
9: The Cathedral of St Peter & St Paul
In 1702, the Cathedral has been dedicated to St Paul. According to early Christian reports, the Cathedral is sited on the spot where St Paul converted the Roman Governor, Publius, to Christianity.
10: The Archbishops Palace
Mdina was always the seat of the Bishop of Malta. The present building was built in 1722 and replaced a considerably older building from the 14th century.

From this graceful loggia, the banditore, or town crier, announced the socalled bandi of the Universit. The bandi are some of the most interesting sources from which to learn about life in medieval Malta.

This is a visual journey from the origins of Mdina to the present day. The 750 slides, screened at a fast pace, reveal Mdinas fascinating history.

Casa Magazzini is a restaurant situated on the bastions of Mdina which specialises in Maltese cuisine and is also home to The Knights of Malta.
14: West Gate, Exit Point
Die Genossenschaft errichtet in Barmbek insgesamt drei Neubauten: In den Husern Am Eisenwerk werden insgesamt 53 Wohnungen, die voraussichtlich im Juni 2009 bezogen werden, errichtet. werden, die voraussichtlich in der 2. Jahreshlfte 2010 bezugsfertig werden. In der Poppenhusenstrae 15 / Wiesendamm 9 werden ein Wohn- und Geschftshaus mit zwei Wohnungen sowie gewerbliche Flchen, die u. a. fr die Geschftsstelle der Genossenschaft vorgesehen sind, und eine Tiefgarage mit 32 Pltzen errichtet. Die Fertigstellung soll Ende 2010 erfolgen.
Die Gesamtkosten dieser Bauvorhaben betragen rd. Tsd. 19.200, von denen rd. Tsd. 7.266 am 31.12.2008 investiert und im Sachanlagevermgen aktiviert waren.
