"I bought my Tivo Series 2 and 3 years of tivo service about 16 months ago and after 14 months, the hardware died. "This is the third Tivo I have owned. The first one I bought 4 years ago. It is still working well enough to give to a friend.

Set up was easy, however had issues getting the IR sensors to work for channel changing. Let me start by saying, this is a nice product. The DVR works as stated by product description. However, there are a couple of things to consider.

i like my tivo ... it is way better than a vc...  pausing live tv, recording tons of shows, being able to dowload to my computer. i like my tivo ... it is way better than a vcr ... super annoyed about the lack of canadian support ... Out of all the technology items we own, this ...  No more commercials, rock solid performance and a great interface.

The Tivo has changed my life! No more letting TV Shows or sporting events control your life!  Tivo is no longer the best choice for dvr. Your cable or satellite provider is now the best choice. This is one of the best inventions made!

Series 1 TiVo Bracket Instructions
(c) 2001-2003, Adberg Consulting LLC. All rights reserved. BRACKET PARTS LIST: (1) Bracket (4) Blue Rubber Grommets (4) White Nylon Spacers (4) Philips-head Screws with Lock-Washers (2) Self-Tapping Screws (2) Flat Washers (2) Torx L-Keys (T-10 and T-15)
STEP 1: Insert a blue grommet into each of the four open bracket holes. To insert each grommet, squeeze it together and slide it in through the opening in each of the four holes, as shown in the picture.
STEP 2: Insert the white plastic spacers into the bracket from the top, as shown.
STEP 3: Turn the bracket over and insert the 4 Phillips-head screws with the built-in washers into each of the white spacers.
STEP 4: Align the bracket on the hard drive as shown. The ends of the four screws should align with the holes in your hard drive. Be sure to orient the drive and bracket as shown in the picture: The hard drives IDE and power connections should be at the end of the bracket with the L-shaped bend.
STEP 5: Find the two pegs in the TiVo and install the bracket next to the other bracket (if its still in the TiVo), being sure to get the pegs through the new bracket. One peg is circled in the picture.
STEP 6: Insert a washer into the end of each of the self-tapping screw. Using the self-tapping screws and a Phillips head screwdriver, secure the bracket to the TiVo. The self-tapping screws (and washers) should be inserted into the bracket holes near the front of the TiVo. Please note that you will be cutting threads in the metal holes, so it might require a bit of force to get the screws started.

TIVO UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS
(c) 2001-2003, Adberg Consulting LLC. All rights reserved.
Instructions for Series 1 Standalone TiVos single drive REPLACE upgrade (Philips HDR Series and Sony SVR-2000) These instructions are also available in COLOR at http://www.weaknees.com/instructions/sa_s1_replace.pdf

WORDS OF CAUTION:

Please be aware that upgrading presents a few physical hazards. As with most consumer electronics devices, components in the TiVo may still carry a lethal charge, even after disconnecting from your power supply. Be aware of this while working inside your TiVo. Allow sufficient time for discharging of components and avoid contact as much as possible with potential hazards. While we have done everything we can to provide accurate, easy-to-follow instructions, we cannot be responsible for any damage done to your TiVo or to yourself as a result of your upgrade. Please be VERY careful when upgrading. NEVER open the TiVo while the unit is plugged in and NEVER operate the TiVo if the lid is not securely fastened. Please Note: Opening the TiVo voids the warranty. THIS KIT INCLUDES: 1 T10 Torx L-key 1 T15 Torx L-key 1 Upgrade hard drive (not shown) 1 Set of upgrade instructions (not shown)

PREPARE FOR THE UPGRADE

Before you remove the cables from the back of your TiVo, you may want to label each cable so that you'll know exactly how to re-attach your TiVo when you are finished with your upgrade. Pictured at the right is the back of the TiVo, without any cables attached.

OPEN THE TIVO

After unplugging the power cord from the TiVo, wait five minutes for the TiVo to discharge. Do not plug the TiVo back in until you are completely finished. Do not perform this upgrade on carpet, and be careful of static electricity. Using the Torx T-10 (smaller) L-key included in your kit, unscrew the three screws on the back of your TiVo. The three screws are surrounded by black or gray from the top of the TiVo's case. See the picture above. Once the three screws are removed, you have to remove the lid. The "tried and true" method is to place the TiVo on the floor and kneel down with your knees about 6 inches from the front of the TiVo. Place your palms on the top side edges of the TiVo, roughly where the arrows in the picture begin. Use your body weight and pushhardtoward the back of the TiVo. The cover will slide back and then can be lifted up and off the TiVo. Remove the cover. NOTE: Your TiVo may be dusty inside. This doesn't really cause problems for the TiVo, but if you want to clean it, be sure to do so with nothing more invasive than compressed air, which is used to clean computers and computer keyboards. It is available in spray cans from most computer supply stores.

DISCONNECT THE CABLES

With the cover off, you will be able to see one hard drive (two in certain models) and a ribbon cable that runs from the motherboard to one or two hard drives. This IDE cable is gray and has a black connector that is plugged into the hard drive(s). Gently remove the gray cable from the back of the hard drive (or drives if your TiVo has two hard drives). NOTE: If the IDE cable is a bit sticky, be patient and grasp the cable from the plastic connector and gently pull it out from each edge until it comes loose. The hard drive also has a power connector running into it. The power connector has a white connector (smaller than the black connector referenced above). Remove the power connector from the hard drive. Be careful not to touch the power supply located near the power cable. The power cables are sometimes difficult to remove; patience and wiggling back and forth usually does the trick. (As above, if your model has two hard drives, remove this cable from both drives.)

REMOVE THE EXISTING DRIVE AND BRACKET
Using the same Torx T-10 screwdriver, unscrew the two screws holding the TiVo hard drive bracket in place. The screws are located near the front panel of the TiVo, on the right hand side. If you unit has two drives, remove the two screws in front of each drive. (In the picture at the right, the picture is taken at the front-right corner of the TiVoas you are facing the front of the TiVo. In a TiVo with two-drives, you will find a total of four bracket screws.) Once the screws are removed, slide the drive/bracket toward the back of the TiVo and lift it out of the TiVo. Remember how your TiVo bracket was installed in the TiVo, because you will be putting the bracket back in the TiVo in Step 5 below.

CHANGE DRIVES

Turn the drive/bracket over and, using your Torx T-15 (larger) L-key, unscrew the four drive screws connecting the hard drive to the bracket. You can leave the screws in the bracket, keeping the bracket upside-down, and lift the bracket off the drive.
Align the bracket and screws to your new hard drive and secure the new hard drive to the TiVo bracket using your T15 L-key. Be sure to install the bracket as shown in the picture at the right: The bend in the bracket should be flush with the connectors for the power and IDE cables.
Put the new drive and bracket back into your TiVo by aligning the holes in the bracket with the posts in the TiVo and sliding the bracket forward. Then screw in the two screws that you removed from the TiVo bracket back into the bracket with your Torx T-10 screwdriver. This upgrade configuration will operate with only one drive in the TiVo. You will not use the TiVo's original drive (or drives) in your upgraded TiVo.
CONNECT THE POWER AND HARD DRIVE CABLES TO THE DRIVES
Once the drive/bracket is re-installed, connect the red/yellow/black power cable to the drive. Be sure to push on the cable with some force to be sure that it is seated properly. Be careful not to touch the power supply. The power cable connects to the drive with the flat-side down (rounded-side up), as shown in the picture. Connect the gray IDE cable to the hard drive. Again, be sure the cable is pushed snugly into the drive. The notch in the cable should face up. Be very careful not to bend any of the hard drive pins. If your TiVo had two hard drives when you opened the case, you will now have only one hard drive in the TiVo, and you must plug the END of the gray IDE cable into the single replacement hard drive. At no time should you disconnect the gray cable from the TiVo's motherboard.

RE-ATTACH THE TIVO LID

Kneel down in front of your TiVo as you did when you removed the lid. Place the TiVo lid back over the TiVo, so that the back part of the lid is hanging over the back of the TiVo by about an inch. Align the clips on each side of the lid so that they clip down on the sides of your TiVo. Slide the lid toward you while simultaneously pushing down gently on the top of the lid. As the lid moves toward the front of the TiVo, push down on the top-front of the lid to be sure that the top-front clip is secure. Watch the two clips on the back of the lid to be sure they sit inside the holes located on the back of the TiVo. Once the lid is in place, reattach the three screws with your Torx T-10 L-key.

FINISHING THE UPGRADE

Re-attach your TiVo to the cables you disconnected in Step 1. When you connect the power cord, your TiVo will power on. Be sure that your TiVo and other components (VCR, stereo, etc.) are set as they were before you disconnected the TiVo. When you power on your TiVo for the first time, you will be be prompted to go through "Guided Setup." The TiVo will ask you questions about your location and your programming source (cable, satellite, etc.). Your TiVo will make two phone calls during this process. When your TiVo is done with Guided Setup, it will index the new programming information for a few hours. During this time, you will not be able to set Season Passes, but you will be able to watch Live TV. After you have completed the second phone call in Guided Setup, you can verify the increased capacity of your TiVo. In TiVo Central, choose "Messages and Setup," then "System Information." Scroll down to see the new total capacity of the TiVo.
ENJOY! We thank you very much for your purchase and hope that you enjoy your newly-upgraded TiVo. Please email us with any comments, suggestions or complaints. If you found the upgrade easy to install (or even if you found it more difficult than you expected), we'd like to know. If you found our service to be excellent (or awful), we want to know that too. We're always looking to improve our products and servicesthe more we hear from you, the better. Thanks very much!
