Introduction

The http://www.gps-maps-update.com started their Safety Camera Database back in 2005 with only a few hundred cameras that the site owners collected. Now we have details of over 100.000 cameras throughout the whole of the World. These are divided in to groups by type and speed where appropriate. The Safety Camera Database can be installed on a large number of navigation systems including the TomTom. Safety Cameras are installed and removed constantly so it is crucial that your system is kept up to date. This document describes the process of installing the Safety Camera Database initially, and also describes how and where to obtain the updates from. This will ensure that your system is as current as possible and will alert you to accident blackspots and other danger areas on the roads as you are driving.
Requirements Before you can load the Safety Camera Database onto the TomTom you will need the following: A PC with a spare USB port The latest database from the http://www.gps-maps-update.com/site. The TomTom itself The supplied USB cable You will need WinZip ( http://www.winzip.com/ ) or WinRar (http://www.rarlab.com/ ) or any other software to decompress poi database. If you do not have any you can download free to use 40 day trail. (optional)

Back up before you continue 1. As a precaution, before you make any changes to your set-up (e.g. add POIs etc) then please ensure that you have a viable backup of your system and of your storage card. You can copy the entire contents of your storage card to a folder on your PC
Downloading the GPS Safety Camera Database 1. We will send you e-mail which contain file TomTom.zip (or TomTom.rar).
For this guide we are using the DE_AT_and_CH_plus_major_roads_of_WE - Consolidated by Type option.

Installation Guide

1. Save the file TomTom.zip in a place where you can easily find it again e.g. on your Desktop or in My Documents.
In our example we save the file tomtom.zip in the folder "C:/temp".

Please unzip the overlay with a suitable program - we recommend WINZIP - to a target folder of your choice in your computer. We choosed the folder "C:/temp/tomtom".
Now the folder "C:/temp/tomtom" contains the unzipped files in *.bmp and *.ov2 format (every file stands for one speed camera category).
Switch on your TomTom device and connect it to the PC over the USB cable. Wait till the TomTom device is recognize in your Windows computer. Now it should be shown in "MyComputer". Finish software TomTom HOME if it starts automatically. Mark all unzipped *.bmp and *.ov2 files, do right mouse click and select Copy.

Go to the map folder of your TomTom device and paste the *.bmp and *.ov2 files into the map folder. The name of your map folder depends on the installed maps in your TomTom. The map folder in our exmaple is called DE_AT_and_CH_plus_major_roads_of_WE. Maybe your map folder is called Western_and_Central_Europe or Western_Europe or DE_AT_CH or DE_AT_CH_PL_CZ_Plus-Map or similar. If more than one map folder are installed in your TomTom device: Copy the unzipped files into all map folders!

Disconnect TomTom device and computer if copying is finished. Now you have to activate all installed speedcam categories in your TomTom device. Old TomTom: Go to "Main menu/Change preferences/Enable, disable POIs". There you have to enable all speedcam categories. Then go to "./Manage POIs/Warn when near POI" and instruct the TomTom device to issue an acoustic warning before all speed cameras. The alert can be set individually for each category (30mph speedcams, 50mph speedcams,.). New TomTom: The new speedcam categories are automatically available. Go to "Main menu/Change preferences/Manage POIs/Warn when near POI" and instruct the TomTom device to issue an acoustic warning before all speed cameras. 10. After choosing the category you are able to enter the distance as of which the TomTom device should give you an acoustic warning. old TomTom new TomTom

11. Then select the warning sound for each category. TomTom provides different sounds. We recommend a short, terse sound in order to not disrupt any voice messages from the navigation program for any longer than necessary. old TomTom new TomTom
12. We recommend that you don't activate the menu option "Warn only if POI is on route". old TomTom new TomTom
13. Why? Our speed camera database works with an accuracy of +/- 20m. Therefore it is possible that the TomTom NAVIGATOR won't recognise a speed camera because the program would assume that the speed camera is on the other side of the road due to a slight deviation. In addition there are also many speed cameras that are on the left side of the road but work in both directions or can be swivelled. Therefore, please don't activate this item and all speed cameras will be included in the warnings. 14. Please repeat the steps 9 till 12 for each category. If you want to update the speedcam database you only have to replace the older files in the map folder of your TomTom. It will be not necessary to activate the categories again!
Now, all speed cameras are installed and your TomTom is ready for a safe trip!
