Not that the LE32R41BDs pictures are perfect. Some analogue and lower quality digital tuner broadcasts can soften up, presumably as DNIe struggles to resolve the extra noise. Also, peak whites can look fractionally overexaggerated, and although dark pictures are impressively black, they can seem a little untextured. Sonically the LE32R41BD performs well. Although it wont set any volume or frequency range records, the soundstage is smooth and free from the distortions and cabinet rattles that still plague many a flat TV.

Theres no doubt about it: its a looker!

Performance

My preconceptions about the LE32R41BDs performance prove wholly unfounded. This is comfortably Samsungs best LCD TV yet, and more than a match for its rivals here. The picture is exceptionally bright, but this extreme brightness has not compromised black levels. Although the quoted contrast ratio of 600:1 doesnt look good on paper, compared to some of the more audacious claims of its rivals, the depth of darkness on show here is arguably the most profound.his group.

Connectivity

Connectivity is impressive: significantly, it has an HDMI digital video jack which is one in the eye for the more expensive Panasonic 32LXD50. Theres also a component video input and a VGA PC

As you might expect, such a dramatic combination of contrast and brightness benefits colours, which light up the screen with their vibrancy and solidity especially as they arent troubled by any off-putting tone or noise issues. With most sources the LE32R41BDs pictures are appealingly detailed, too, with more than enough subtle texturing

ts not often we can say this, but in a particularly high quality and closely contested group test, the top two places actually belong to the two cheapest screens!
In performance terms, theres little to choose between the equally adept
Samsung LE32R41BD and Toshiba 32WL56, so in the end we made our call based on features; the Samsung model has a built-in digital tuner and better connectivity over the same-price Toshiba model. If you generally use an external digital receiver box for your TV viewing, though, either screen will serve you equally well. Its perhaps a surprise to find Panasonic only creeping in at number three on the rankings list especially as its actually an excellent performer. But ultimately it was harmed by its lack of digital video connectivity. Philips in 4th spot is even more of a surprise. At the smaller end of the LCD market it is the brand to catch combining quality with low prices. But at 1,300 it needed to comfortably outperform the Toshiba and Samsung models, and didnt get close. Sony brings up the rear. It may seem unfair to pitch this slightly long in the tooth model against four cocky young pretenders. But its still widely available, and typically still costs more than all the other models here! And its black level is decidedly last year I
