The close working relationship shared by The Hermitage School and Toshibas Education Specialists has led to several initiatives that benefit the pupils and surrounding community. From supporting grant applications to sponsoring IT awards, Toshibas input is helping this Durham-based comprehensive school raise standards and learning for life.
The Hermitage makes headway
Even before the morning school bell rings, the clues that this secondary school is in tune with tomorrow are all around. Pupils type in homework information on wireless enabled PDAs (personal digital assistants) while teachers add the finishing touches to a lesson that will later be projected from notebook to electronic whiteboard. Since being awarded technology status in 1997, The Hermitage has experienced an impressive upturn in achievement. Transformed from an under-performing comprehensive to one now exceeding local and national averages for exam results, its success can in part be attributed to the strategic and perceptive use of ICT.

Viewing technology as an essential enabling force in the schools aim of providing lifelong learning, Ron Hinshaw explains the importance of choosing the right ICT partner: We are fortunate that the ICT Department has a wide range of experience and expertise within the teaching and technical support staff. This informed background enables us to approach prospective suppliers with a detailed description of our needs. But this clarity of vision can sometimes prove disconcerting as some companies prefer to tell us what we need usually their latest product and not the other way round! Assistant Head Teacher, Mr. Ron Hinshaw, has nurtured much of The Hermitages pro-technology culture by constantly communicating the multiple benefits of ICT. As a result, pupils have a deep-rooted awareness of technology and how it can help them individually. We have shown that ICT is an enhanced tool for learning across all abilities and in every subject area. Collaborating on projects
In addition to the provision of servers, notebooks and PDAs, Toshiba adds value to the relationship in many different ways. Ron Hinshaw recounts some of these: Toshiba is deeply involved in our bid for phase 3 Technology College status, which, if successful, will provide the school with an additional grant of 125,000 per annum. They also attend District Council planning meetings to aid our application for a broadband link, as well as sponsor IT awards aimed at pupils and staff both here and at our family of feeder schools.
These pocket-sized, portable units are installed with Microsoft applications so that daily tasks such as recording homework, note-taking, research and reading digital books can all be performed. Their light weight and compact size make it easy for the pupil to carry around, and the wireless card enables remote access to the schools main network and the Internet. The school is currently assessing the effectiveness of the PDAs, and has requested pupils of all abilities to participate in the pilot study. Therefore, any improvement in learning and organisational skills can be representatively assessed.
Pupils are permitted to take the PDAs home, which means parents are also gaining access to ICT. This falls in line with a scheme close to Ron Hinshaws heart The Hermitage Learning Community Project. Its aim is to offer all members of the community a way of accessing technology for leisure and learning purposes. For little or no charge, local residents can use the equipment at The Hermitage to study on-line courses as diverse as business management and foreign languages. Its proving to be an effective extension of learning, opening up opportunities for many local people.
New depths of learning
On a broader scale, Toshibas Business Development Manager, Mr. Billy Taylor, is collaborating with Ron Hinshaw on a joint initiative that will help other schools overcome some of the barriers encountered with integrating ICT into the classroom. He says, The aim is to create an open forum where participants share experiences and best practices. This helpful advice can be taken back and implemented at school. A trailblazing example of this is providing pupils with Toshiba e570 PDAs. These hand-held computing devices are more commonly associated with business executives, but as Ron Hinshaw explains, pupils can benefit too: We encourage students to regard ICT in the same way they use pen and paper; replacing the paper planner with a PDA seemed a natural progression.
