Catching the masses
Although the wow factor is evident in the Tablet PC, Toshiba feels that it belongs right in the mainstream of mobile computing.
Wu: The Tablet PC is a mainstream product, not just a cool executive gadget.
WRITING ON TO THE COMPUTER SCREEN MAY BE COOL, BUT THAT SHOULD NOT BE THE FIRST THING ON PEOPLES MINDS WHEN THEY CONSIDER THE TABLET PC.
We feel it is suitable for everyone that needs a portable system, not just the pen-based tablet function, said Wu Teng Guo, General Manager, Southeast Asia & Indian Subcontinent, Computer Systems Division, Toshiba Singapore. As such while there are a couple of designs for the Tablet PC, Toshiba feels that a convertible form factor best fits its stance of making it a mainstream product. We anticipate that the tablet function is only about 20 per cent of the Tablet PCs use, Wu added. Still, the tablet feature is a highly valuable feature. Wu, a Tablet PC user himself, finds that his Portege 3500 allows him to make use of it wherever he is, either standing up or sitting down. Say you have five meetings, and when one rushes from room to room for meetings, one does not always have time to go back to the office to organise notes into the computer, he noted. While moving from room to room, you can use the tablet function to access email or even surf the Net. I find that if I need to pull out information, I dont need a table to work on. I can access whatever I need, spreadsheets, documents, and so on, on the move.
He finds the whole concept of the corridor warrior is very real. There is no need to settle down and productivity increases if I can compute standing up, he said. However, Wu notes that this inking and handwriting recognition technologies that enable users to convert notes to text is not meant for everything, just short notes. Thats why the Toshiba Portege 3500 Tablet PC can be converted into a full-fledged notebook for normal use with no performance compromises, he noted.

Personal pleasure

Beyond performance and productivity, the Tablet PC can be something very personal to the user. One of the biggest hesitations people may have when using a notebook in a public place like the airport lounge or in a restaurant is that it is very obvious, notes Wu. People might think that you are showing off, so having a Tablet PC and using a pen is more discrete as it is a very natural way of working. Also, when discussing something face-to-face, or for one-onone presentations, it is much more personal and less intrusive than using a standard notebook. In the future, Wu expects better battery life especially when Tablet PCs with Intel Centrino mobile technology hits the local market in the third quarter of the year.
