PRESS-RELEASE 16X Max ATAPI DVD-ROM drive from Toshiba - SD-M1502

Neuss, 18th July 2000.

Toshiba Europe GmbH is proud to announce its fastest ever ATAPI DVD ROM drive. The SD-M1502 with an ATAPI interface operates as a 16x max DVD achieving a data transfer rate of 21,600 KB/s and a random DVD seek time of 95 milliseconds. The SD-M1502 utilises Toshibas proven performance-improving digital servo system and variable speed playback, which allows the drive to start reading data before the disc speed reaches any specific rotational rate. The CD-ROM performance at 48x max (7,200 KB/s) CD-ROM performance brings the SD-M1502 to the same level as the fastest CD-ROM drives on the market. This added performance for the first time allows consumers to use their current CD ROM software without any performance deficit. The SD-M1502 has been designed to deliver optimal performance with its 256KB buffer and low noise operation. said Tom Frawley, European Marketing Manager, Toshiba Storage Device Division. Additionally as the popularity of CD-RW drives continues to increase, the ability of the SDM1502 to read CD-R and CD-RW discs at high speed has become increasingly important. The SD-M1502 offers optimal read performance on CD-R discs at 48x max and CD-RW discs at 20x max. In line with this trend the SD-M1502 offers improved CD-DA transfer rates of 8.6X Max. The DVD formats ability to support large capacity digital sources has made it a winner in the key areas of moving images, music and software, with the film industry in particular taking full advantage of the mediums ability to support cinema-level image quality for full length movies. Toshiba has right from the beginning been a pioneer of DVD technology, setting the pace in the DVD field with a constant stream of innovative DVDVideo players, DVD-ROM drives DVD-RAM drives, all in full conformity with DVD-format standards. The addition of the new, high-performance, SDM1502 DVD-ROM drive to Toshibas line-up signals a further expansion of the burgeoning DVD market. Key Features a) 16x (21,600 KB/s) DVD-ROM and 48x (7,200 KB/s) CD-ROM b) 256 KB buffer for optimal performance c) Random Seek of 95 ms for DVD and 80 ms for CD d) ATAPI Interface e) ULTRA DMA (33 MB/s ) supported f) Fully read compliant with all major DVD and CD standards including DVD ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-R, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW.

SERVICE MANUAL

PORTALBE DVD PLAYER

SD-P1700SE
The above model is classified as a green product (*1), as indicated by the underlined serial number. This Service Manual describes replacement parts for the green product. When repairing this green product, use the part(s) described in this manual and lead-free solder (*2). For (*1) and (*2), see the next page.

Mar.,2006 GREEN

GREEN PRODUCT PROCUREMENT
The EC is actively promoting the WEEE & RoHS Directives that define standards for recycling and reuse of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and for the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances. From July 1, 2006, the RoHS Directive will prohibit any marketing of new products containing the restricted substances. Increasing attention is given to issues related to the global environmental. Toshiba Corporation recognizes environmental protection as a key management tasks, and is doing its utmost to enhance and improve the quality and scope of its environmental activities. In line with this, Toshiba proactively promotes Green Procurement, and seeks to purchase and use products, parts and materials that have low environmental impacts. Green procurement of parts is not only confined to manufacture. The same green parts used in manufacture must also be used as replacement parts.

LEAD-FREE SOLDER

This product is manufactured using lead-free solder as a part of a movement within the consumer products industry at large to be environmentally responsible. Lead-free solder must be used in the servicing and repair of this product.

WARNING

This product is manufactured using lead free solder.
DO NOT USE LEAD BASED SOLDER TO REPAIR THIS PRODUCT !
The melting temperature of lead-free solder is higher than that of leaded solder by 86F to 104F (30C to 40C). Use of a soldering iron designed for lead-based solders to repair product made with lead-free solder may result in damage to the component and or PCB being soldered. Great care should be made to ensure high-quality soldering when servicing this product especially when soldering large components, through-hole pins, and on PCBs as the level of heat required to melt lead-free solder is high.

LASER BEAM CAUTION LABEL

When the power supply is being turned on, you may not remove this laser cautions label. If it removes, radiation of laser may be received.

PREPARATION OF SERVICING

Pickup Head consists of a laser diode that is very susceptible to external static electricity. Although it operates properly after replacement, if it was subject to electrostatic discharge during replacement, its life might be shortened. When replacing, use a conductive mat, soldering iron with ground wire, etc. to protect the laser diode from damage by static electricity. And also, the LSI and IC are same as above.
Ground conductive wrist strap for body.
Soldering iron with ground wire or ceramic type
1M Conductive mat The ground resistance between the ground line and the ground is less than 10
